    Well done summary of Canada's flag history. I found it very informative. Two things I'd like to bring to your attention. Prime Minister Lester Pearson was the driving force behind the adoption of the distinctive Canadian flag as a result of the Suez Crisis of 1956. Pearson, as Canada's Foreign Affairs minister, was behind the UN's decision to send a peace keeping force to Egypt where the British and French had invaded to take control of the Suez Canal after Egypt had nationalized it. The Egyptians objected to Canadian troops participating in the peace keeping force as their flag at the time included the flag of Britain, the Union Jack, in the upper left hand corner. This spurred Pearson to push for a truly Canadian symbol on a uniquely Canadian flag as Canada was emerging as an important middle power on the world stage. The Maple leaf was the ubiquitous symbol worn by Canadian service men and women in the First and Second World Wars and Pearson, himself a World War 1 veteran, wanted the maple leaf to be central to the design of the new flag. He pushed for a flag with three maple leaves in red on a white background with two blue borders which became known as "Pearson's pennant". As Pearson was leading a minority government at the time, the opposition wouldn't go for his choice of flag but approved Stanley's design after much passionate debate.

    Interesting. Though I must say the end is a bit misleading. Years ago, the word «Canadien» designated only the French population (English were called British). So, when you quote a French mayor of Canada's biggest French city saying that the maple tree is a symbol of Canada, he means it's a symbol of the French population (and anyway, sugar maples are found almost only in Québec).

    What an amazing video. Thank you for explaining a few things about the original red ensign flags I didn't know. What was missed was one impetus of changing flags from the red ensign were the Suez Crisis of 1956 when the Canadian foreign minister Lester B. Pearson proposed a United Nations force as a face-saving way for France and Great Britain to back away from their predicament, but the Egyptians were dubious of Canada's participation because we have the Union Jack right there in our flag. The other impetus was Canada's approaching centennial, and it was thought it would be a good time to have our own unique flag. While the current flag is great (even though it was the compromise option), I'm still ponder on if the tricolour design (favoured by now prime minister Lester B. Pearson) with the three maple leafs in the middle with the blue bars on the side would have been the better choice.

    Great video! Although you do not mention the fact that King George V proclaimed Canada's official colours to be red and white, traditional colours of the British (Red) and the French (White--for Royal France), in 1921 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_colours_of_Canada). Also, the maple leaf was firstly the symbol of French Canadians (when Mayor Viger talks about Canada's people--he mainly mentions the ''Canadien'' which at the time was the French-Canadian (look at Montreal Canadiens, the hockey team, here Canadien (with an E) means = French Canadian). The maple leaf lost its symbolism for French-Canadians when they started to prefer the fleur-de-lys, mostly in the 1900s until the adoption of the Quebec flag in 1948 (French-Canadian here hehehe!)

    The first French settlement in Canada was NOT in Quebec in 1608. It was in Nova Scotia in 1604. The settlement was moved the following year to a new location Nova Scotia where they remained until 1607. The settlement was then abandoned until 1610 when more French settlers, that would later become the Acadians, came back to North America. Quebec is a common misconception though still shows the lack of thorough research.

    I have a question. As an ex-pat. Cdn, living in the US, (retired).. I have one flag pole, on the home I bought- flying the Stars & Stripes. Now if I wanted to fly a Canadian flag, and the US flag, and for good measure- the State flag... do I need 3 poles, or in what order should they appear- if on one pole? If 3 poles- can the flags all be flown at the same height?

    • @Nosirt
      @Nosirt 6 років тому

      You need at least 2 poles to fly those flags. Firstly, The US flag CANNOT share its poles with any foreign nations' flags. So you need a separate pole for the Can. Flag. Now whether you want those flags to be same height is up to you, but in general, to be respectful of other countries, the US flag code says you should fly all nations flag at equal heights. Then, for the issue of the state flag, you can make a separate pole and fly it at same heights as the US flag but most times, the state flag is flown at a lower level to symbolize the power difference; but even more so commonly, the state flag can be flown at the same pole the US flag is flown, with the US flag always at the top.
      So I suggest: Make 2 equal poles, one with US flag (right side of the flag's perspective) so the US flag should be flown to the left of your view with the state flag under it and the Can. flag to the right.
      *This all just Flag Code, you can just do whatever you want without any legal consequences*

    • @tonkatrucker
      @tonkatrucker 6 років тому

      Thank you my friend. That was most considerate of you , and your response was welcomed. I am now doing what is suggested by you. Two flag poles- with one (on the left) for the Stars & Stripes, and the 2nd pole with the Maple Leaf.

    • @mandehart4186
      @mandehart4186 4 роки тому

      You can fly both flags on the same pole just so you know. There is no crime in that as long as the USA flag is flown above the CANADIAN flag. Since you are in the USA that is why the USA flag is above the Canadian flag. Only reason I know this because I have family in the USA that fly both flags and the USA flag is above the home land they are from.

    Damnit...
    Something that really sucks, is nowadays, we can't really fly any unofficial flags, simply because it's extremely frowned apon.
    This is a problem for Australia and new Zealand, because their flags have foreign symbols on it, and flying it unofficially or informally would be a perfect way to show off your flag to the public, and everyone can see what it looks like waving. This would in turn, hopefully convince the government to make a poll or compition of some description, and, because of the increased exposure, more people are more likely to want a new flag, which was a problem in new zealand, when a majority vote forced the flag to remain unchanged

      @blondboybcDiDi Anderson, when was that? What is today the United States (most especially the southern states) was a Penal Colony until the Revolution when the British switched to Australia. I've never heard about Canada being used as a Penal Colony, and if it ever was, it would be my guess that it was between the start of the Revolution and the early 1800's when prisoners started being sent to Australia.

      Leading the way by avoiding a national referendum so that the least oppressed conquered population of all time (the French-Canadians) could force the rest of the country to abandon their heritage while actively oppressing English people in Quebec? Yeah word.

    Canada if human would be male and the twin brother of the U.S. his hobbies includes hockey, nature exploring, and being a good host at parties due to him being a nice guy. but on the ice he's not so nice and can get very brutal. also and this is my take on it, he is blind due to him being injured by chemical weapons of the first world war, but he still looks on the bright side of life :)

      as for the chemical weapons leading to blindness it has a more expanded look. while the German gas attack did in fact injure Canada he still had his sight. but overtime, the effects began to affect his vison until eventually his world plunged into shapes and shadows before all just blank void. and his sight was no more.
