One idea for adding a piece of card stock to help strengthen the die cuts is to use your “ugly” paper you wouldn’t use anyway. 😉

  • @monikakowalewska2433
    @monikakowalewska2433 4 роки тому +11

I don't recall whose idea it was at first (some wonderfully organized youtube crafter I came across once), but at the end of the crafting day I cut my bigger scraps into sizes A4, A5, A6 or 5x5", depending what the scrap allows me to. Then I have them standing together on the shelf in the order of size and colour, ready to be used as card backgrounds or journalling cards.
And the rest (tiny bits that left) I throw into the basket, and when it's full I make myself kind of "scraps extravaganza" ;) punching shapes and cutting flowers, while chatting over the phone with friends :) or making patchwork patterns.
Recently my favourite style of using these smaller scraps is creating backrounds from hexagons cut out from different patterned papers, kind of paper quilting :)

So mine are like an army of soldiers ready for the battle, with some laggards hiding in the basket ;)

I keep my scraps in plastic sleeves with the same color cardstock. I use from the scrap sleeve before I use a full sheet. That helps keep the scraps down.

@@justinehovey I have a small tote that fits on a shelf below my table. I toss the scraps into that little tote, then later sort into the matching sleeve.

I’m a bit worried that if I stick my scraps in with my full size papers that the heft of the scraps will warp my full sized ones. I’ve found a long, though not very tall, color-coded “wallet” to make do for now, but I’m eyeing a larger (letter sized?) version with about 3 or 4 multiples of “rainbow” tabs. Sadly, the thing comes from China, and I’ve not had the best of luck ordering from them. Does anyone else have ideas for scrap storage?

@Titanic for sure 😔...I can’t bring myself to throw them away, then I’m too lazy to get them out to use. But I’m getting ready to start my own UA-cam channel, so I have been organizing, and like @VickyReuter, I am getting mine separated into their proper color families. It’s a process, cuz I’ve been making cards for over 25 years and probably have scraps that are 10-15 years old 😳. But I digress. Thanks Justine for the inspiration!! I’m making a 6 month New Years resolution, to use my scraps!! Will check out Ingrid next. Thanks, again, you’re amazing 💗💗💗

A couple months ago during quarantine I separated all my color cardstock scraps. I placed each color family in big plastic bags. Since then, oh my, how convenient that has made my card making. No more long searches. Now pattern paper I have all in one bag.

I have a 6 drawer unit that I keep my scraps in....once a year, I go thru and get rid of the ones that I like the least.
Once in a while, I have cut the the scraps into all one size; put them into a ziplock; and dropped them in the Goodwill bin.

My scrap hoard is more like the Titanic. I cut my backgrounds to 1/4 inch smaller than my card base, add my scraps then run them through my die cut machine without a die. Firmly affixes the strips to the dry adhesive. A laminator with a “no heat” option works well too.

In each batch of scraps I handle each scrap piece in a couple of ways. First if the scrap is big enough, I cut out as much as I can to use for a card base/backer. Then I move to manual punches to cut typically used shapes such as squares, hearts, and circles, tags. etc. I use the cardstock/papers that have had pieces cut or punched out and maneuver around to get as much of the paper used as possible. Yes, I use the small punches too so that there are only teeny, tiny, unusable pieces left when I am done. The whale tail and flat Stampin up type punches are the easiest type to use. When I am done I place them in containers by shape. You could sort by color if you prefer. (Cheap alert: Gerber baby food 2nd foods come in a small plastic container with a snug lid. I had a lady that cleaned and saved the containers and lids for me so I got a TON of free containers for storing small pieces! You can the store those in a decorative box to keep the containers corralled ).
This is a way to manage the scrap pile and keep your hands busy if you like to do mindless kinds of things while watching tv.

Since I don't have space for my Gemini to be out all the time, when I am using it, I make my cuts and then I use it to cut up, usually using the dies I just had out, to cut more pieces for the future out of my scraps, such as flowers, snowflakes when I have white or white/silver glitter paper scraps. Some of those papers are expensive so they need to be used up. I also quilt and I do this same thing with my fabric. I make my own precuts of fabrics in specific sizes that I use frequently when quilting. This means when I want to start a new quilt project, I am ready to go. With paper though I don't have a big stock, but for right now I know if I need to make a quick card I already have flowers cut out and ready to glue. I do like the fabric strips as it is like quilting. Thank you.

Soooo … NEXT Question!! How do you store your spare die cuts?!? I’ve begun to keep templates of cards I make, plus spare “bits” (paper, brads, INSTRUCTIONS, die cuts, etc.) together in cd or dvd boxes. But I’m wondering if I’ll need a whole bookcase in a year to store them!!

I keep anything one square inch and up, that's mostly because I have many small dies that I can use small bits instead of a large cardstock sheet. I recently used a bunch of strips (varying widths) much like you did in this video, but set them aside (temporarily) for inspiration. That makes this video very timely for me. Thanks!

As with Justine’s “snips” these could now be turned into a “quilt pattern” by making something akin to a pinwheel style pattern, either in blocks on a card front (to use up the smallest of pieces) or as one single block on the card face. Know any quilters? They could quite possibly give us even more pattern ideas!

I'm drowning in strips so I've started using them to make contrast borders/surrounds for my matts and layers. You just need to mitre the corners and they look as good as using a whole piece of card. Generally, I put my strips and leftovers back in with the cardstock packs,so I can go straight to the colour I want and then they are easy to find for small die cuts or sentiments sentiment layer borders and tags.

I just did my yearly punch and purge of scraps...when my kids were little that was a job for them...and they could create with whatever they punched. Great ideas for more ways to help me use up all the scraps.

I just started keeping my long thin scrap pieces so I don't have that much but I am hoping to start using them soon.

My scraps are in file folders two for each color. One for prints and one for solids. I do use them for strip cards and hexagons!!

I primarily make cards do I save all sizes and organize by color in clear pockets. Stored in a sturdy file basket so they are easy to flip through. I need to add tabs though.

Another tip for getting rid of the Hershey Kisses peak on Nuvo drops: when you have applied all the drops, lift the card, taking care to keep it horizontal (parallel to your work surface) and tap it sharply underneath a couple of times. I usually flick my index finger against my thumb. This makes the peak flatten but still keeps the drop rounded.
Still keeping the card horizontal, put it back on your work surface to dry.

love those rainbow cards. My scraps are not that pretty organized. I would say they are about as large as a shoe box. I purge often.

I am participating in a hop this month about using up scraps. TFS. My hop is on how to create embellishments with scraps. When I first started making cards I shoved them into poly envelopes. I only wish I would have sorted them by color! I still use the clear poly envelopes for my scraps!

Since I haven't created enough layouts or cards in order to have a lot of scraps, I'll keep your video available for when I need it. I saw an online video that demonstrated cutting strips of paper by using a paper shredder that didn't cut crossways. Also, I've ordered the Tim Holtz Deckle Torn Edge Trimmer so I'll be able to weave different colors of cardstock that doesn't have a smooth look. WOW, there's so much to utilize in our hobby!!!

My scraps are usually patterned paper rather than colored card, but for those I tend to use them up by diecutting with them. For patterned paper scraps they are more difficult to use up, I always dig in my folders to see if I can though rather than use new things and add to the pile.

I keep my scraps in hanging files in a file bin organized by colour. I prefer the hanging files over plastic sleeves because it is easier to throw them in or pull them out. I probably wouldn't put them away if I had to open a plastic sleeve organizer thingummy. But also because of my consulting work I tend to have a bunch of portable file bins as I use them for projects in order to be able to pack up related files and go off to meetings. Easy to re-purpose to holding craft scraps and I have another one that holds images I have cut out for collaging.
