  • Today's episode I'm joined by Michael E. Knight. While you may know Michael best as “Tad Martin” on All My Children or “Martin Gray” on General Hospital, he and I have been great friends for decades.
Today you’ll see us laugh… a lot! as we reminisce about our younger years on All My Children and trips that we’ve taken together, but we also get really deep. Michael tells me about his journeys with OCD and dysthymia. We talk about therapy and the ability to seek out help and medication when it’s needed.

I would agree. His face looks almost the same. I was a bit shocked at how grey he had become. But he has a full head of hair, which is nice.

i LOVE Michael E. Knight... i go all the way back to "Tad the Cad". He ALWAYS put a smile to my face....loved his storylines... soaps are not the same as then. was SO EXCITED when he came to GH with the very clever name of Martin Grey. He deserves MORE storyline... Michael, you are just as handsome now as you were then....

In the early 2000s I met Michael in a bookstore on Martha’s Vineyard and was so dumbfounded to see “Tad” face-to-face, that I said “Taaaaad!” And he replied “Hiiiiii” with a very silly grin on his face. It was a very cool moment because I always loved Tad even though he was a cad!

I met Michael Knight in a movie theater in NYC. I was about 16/17 yrs old and he came out to get a soda. He stood there and spoke soap opera with me, gave me an autograph and went on his way. He was the best! (I still have the autograph 20+ yrs later). I was ecstatic to see him come to GH. Forever a Tad fan... Great episode Maurice!

This episode was a “WOW”. Always loved Michael…remember Tad and Dixie (and Nico) well. There has always been something about him that I connected with. He is a deep soul and Maurice, you were correct in stating that he helped many with the sharing of his experience. I especially admire and respect the way he related his experience to what is going on in the outer world. We sensitive ones can feel how unsteady things still are and if we are predisposed to suffering in the ways you guys discussed, we sure as hell felt it during the pandemic. Bravo. Thank you both for being open in a time when humanity needs to here “YOU ARE NOT ALONE”. Maurice, a special thank you to you for mentioning the children. There is not enough help to go around.

I grew up watching AMC, OLTL, and GH in the 80's. Even as a young child, I loved Tad! His humor made the character so fun to watch. I love that he's just as funny and likeable in real life. He was very right about how you guys bring a certain comfort to your fans. We are very grateful for all our soap actors - you truly are like an extended family to us. I am 60yo, and have basically had depression and anxiety disorder my whole life. My mother was truly bipolar and an alcoholic which is why I have anxiety and PTSD. She inherited hers and it is genetic. She was Choctaw and bipolar disorder is common within most natives. In fact, researchers isolated the chemical abnormality that first manifested itself among Natives on the Trail of Tears. Of course, back then and even when I was growing up and a young adult, psychological care was looked down on. And the drugs were scary. All they had was lithium and then Paxil when I was a teen. Both of which were given to me and caused terrible problems. What most pf us did in those generations was self medicate. I did start on good antidepressants and anti anxiety drugs during my 30s and 40s, on into my 50s. I am doing fairly well now without any mediation.

Maurice I am so glad Michael showed your book in this segment Nothing General About It. I am reading it now. Everyone should get a copy of this book and read. It is so helpful when people talk about their bad experiences. You are helping so many people with State of Mind and your book. Something I recall reading on page 25 of your book. You stated you did not know why you are still here. I believe you are still here because your job on this earth is long from being done. You are helping and will continue to help many people. I cannot begin to tell you how much respect I have for you and Paula for sharing your story. I was very fortunate I grew up in a very loving caring environment. It breaks my heart to know that people are going through, have gone through or will go through what you and Paula have been through. By the way I hope you do not leave GH.

It was so good to hear that medicines of today do help, that gives me comfort to hear this. My Dad had PTS, but during his time they had no clue about PTS. My Dad was in WW2 under Patton as a medic. He was in Normandy, D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, and so on. He received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Bronze Star with the oak leaf cluster, and a Purple Heart. He had saved many lives and saw horrible things at a young age. Eventually when home it caught up with him, and when it did, he was a mess. I remember he would scream in his sleep. They gave him high powerful meds that has now been ban, it made him worse. Then they gave him shock treatments. All they were doing was experimenting on him, they had no clue what to do. He did end up getting Parkinson's and at the young age of 74 died of a stroke. Hearing that meds work now, maybe my Dad helped with that, and that would have made him happy.

Maurice I sat in my apartment and could not make myself walk out the door. I felt I was completely alone in this war till you started State Of Mind. That was when I was saved from my own mind. It was you Maurice. Now I’m happily married. Live in the country and spend most of my time outside enjoying my animals. My world. Not thinking about suicide when I couldn’t hang on anymore. I’m sleeping again and loving life. I think I sent you a message not too long ago that didn’t sound nice. Don’t know what I was thinking. Very sorry. ❤️

Loved this conversation- been a Michael fan for a long time. My son turns 34 tomorrow- but when he was 1 or so he’d be playing in his room when AMC was on & would run out saying tell me when Tad & Dixie are on - such a sweet memory -
It’s good to see the 2 of you lean on each other - thank you both for your caring for each other. Many men shy away from emotion. Hugs to Michael - ty for sharing - I have melancholy at times - it’s like a familiar weighted blanket that pulls you under & becomes like a second skin. Each time I come round the bend from it - I hope it never returns.
Love you both - Nico- Tad Sonny - Martin Michael - Maurice

I discovered All My Children at college when I was 17 (1982) and watched it until it went off the air. It was my escape when life was challenging, and the way Michael E Knight could bring humour through Tad was one of my favourite parts of the show. Sharing his story and seeing how he has rebounded is a such a gift. I, too, have struggled with anxiety/panic attacks (in fact my first panic attack was while watching All My Children, strangely enough) and having the help a friend who had been through a similar experience and came out the other side was such a major part in my recovery, just like Maurice was for Michael. It's hard for people who haven't lived through it themselves to understand - I'm glad his wife was supportive and encouraged him to get help. Thanks for the great show!

I was even more in his corner when i found out that he was the brother of my favorite Brady Peter, which is what I named my son. But when he shared his challenges they really hit home. During Covid I was diagnosed with BC and the experience was awful enough but I had to attend my doctors visits alone. Since I've always been the one everyone leans on my feelings of fear and doubt never were taken into consideration and I soon realized that I was becoming angry not at God but everyone else for not trying to meet my needs. It was a dark place. I did seek counseling and it did definitely helped. Now as a cancer Survivor I'm better but I'll never be that happy happy person again. I had to mourn her loss, but I'm here. I've bought many things from the gift shop in Hell. Professional help does wonders. Thank you both for being so candid. Loved the stories.

I loved this episode so much! I totally relate to so many things Michael touched on…the panic attacks when the sun goes down bc I know I’m not going to fall asleep, being too tired & down to stand up in the shower, the feeling of being a failure, etc etc etc!! You’re absolutely right Mo, he definitely helped a lot of people today, including myself, just by talking about all of these things! It’s nice to know we are not alone!! Thanks so much both of you for continuing these important conversations! Much needed & much appreciated! 🙏🏻💗 Also, I just love the friendship between you two, as well as the humor! 😃 Fantastic! Such a great State of Mind today! 🙌🏻

I SO get you guys; God Bless you 🙏 ❤ both! I am Bi Polar and am 66 years old. My daughter began symptoms when she was 11, and has been through living hell-we both have. We manage with our meds, thank heaven. But you still "cycle", just not quite as bad. I am on 5 phys meds, for manic depression, extreme anxiety disorder, PTSD. I am NOT ashamed like I was 40 years ago, not getting help is more to be ashamed 😔 of.

I love this guy. I was so excited I was chosen to audition for “Date with an Angel” & really wanted it just because Michael was the lead. They went with someone older & from France. 😔 Just getting the opportunity was cool enough. Aw, the 80’s. Love you, Maurice & Michael (Nico & Tad). Can’t wait to watch this! 🙋🏼‍♀️😍

My mother and I were shopping with my then baby son, ~approx 1990, at the South Shore Mall in Bay Shore, LI. Michael E. Knight was doing a fan event, signing autographs at Sears. He was none too happy to be there but I got on line anyway because… Tad. Sears is gone but the memory lives on! Great series, MB.

I'm so glad I watched this episode. Its the first time I ever heard someone say that the thought of suicide feels like releasing the people we love from having to live with us and deal with our depression. Life was so dark and unbearable at that time and I had no idea that anyone else believed that it would be a blessing to my children to leave them. This was in the 1970's, and it took many years and much medication, therapy and inpatient stints to finally drag myself to the surface. I'm good now but it's still in the back of my mind that it could happen again. But your comment really resonated with me and Michael's comment about the knowledge that he came through it and knew he could again were both powerful and spoke to my heart. Thank you.

I had no idea Michael E. Knight can do comedy---wow! And hey...I'm so loving General Hospital's storyline, Maurice. Carly knows Sonny is so not with control--feeling powerless and her "walking the dog"--even attorney Diane went there. Sonny's absolutely not having that!

Thankfully I do not suffer from mental illness but I have and still have family members that do. Mo, know this, no matter what you put them through your family wants you here and don't you dare leave them. As for Mike, he rocks for coming on this show and telling us it's okay to not have it all together all the time and that this too shall pass. Love and commend you both for your courage in talking about this stuff and thank you for doing so. And yeah, I've been a Tad fan since forever and remember the Nico character before he morphed into Sonny--you guys are incredible actors and it's nice to see the friendship between you.
