The bottom of his tank is done using a liner wrapped over top of plastic egg crate (Lowe's carries it as a ceiling light panel 2' x 4' sections). It looks like a giant plastic waffle basically. To wrap it you can use like black tarp paper for flower beds (allows water, but not particles through) It is a false bottom. Most people also support the center of the egg crate with PVC to allow for the weight of the substrate and driftwood. Dendroboard*com has his build thread. "The Peninsula"
seems like i'm quite late to the party, but your work is a real artform, its great to see someone making vivs look like the natural enviroment of the animal, i hate to see animals on paper towels and tiles. they need stimulation. you are an inspiration, i was looking for ideas for my leopard gecko viv, and your channel was just what i was looking. bravo
Really nice Grimmer! A few questions: 1) What species of orchids did you use? 2) The depression in the middle, does it resembles a puddle or what is its function? 3) How is the fan assembly working for you? Any condensation on the glass? 4) How do you make your time lapse videos? Like others have said, this is really inspirational.
That. was. fucking. amazing!!! That was seriously by far one of the coolest things I've seen in a while, really inspirational for people building their own viv's too! Love it! Thank you so much for sharing!! Please do more!! Also, what was put in there? It's beautiful as it was, whatever creature goes in there is spoiled!
@Hyokenseisou Thanks a lot. I appreciate the compliments! Right now I only have 2 leucomelas in the tank temporarily until I find the perfect species of dart frog for it. Something rare and bold.
Great work! The moss and other plantings look great! Info on the names of plant species ie. the moss, orchids would be a great follow up! Thanks again for posting!
Ok holy jesus, you are literally my idol, this project is insane! I'd really love to know the materials list. I'd pay you for one of those tanks if I thought I had anywhere near enough to spend on something like that! Super epic man, are you planning on putting any frogs in there? Have you ever looked at anything like aquascaping? What got you into vivariums in the first place? Keep up the great work man!
crazy amazing. it's everything i have come to expect from your (high) standards. I can't wait until it grows in more! though it appears it has done some growing already... looks just stunning. only suggestion, some ground plants poking through the leaf litter. can't wait till it has some frogs! maybe some imitators?
Thats so awesome that I would probably afix some clay with the same tropical green color to each tank seam so as to hide the tanks definition make the green clay branch out like stems and then conceal each green seam with more lower height subtle clay plants. I would start hiding every man-made aspect.
Did you build the terrarium yourself aswell? How did you make the background? Do you get enough air circulation and humidity with only have "wholes" in the top? Do you have to change the water part sometimes? Also what do you do with the water from the sprinkler? Since its a flat terrarium there is no slant like in the 75 gal tank you build. Absolute amazing what you have build there.
My absolute favourite build. If you get a chance I'd love to know what plants you've used. I can recognise some of the Broms but the flowering plants, orchids ? Any info would be appreciated.
You put great detail into the construction of your tank witch I love and are inspiring. I have a few questions for you. One, I was wondering how you pick your plants and were you prefer to purchase them from? Second, do you ever make tanks that combine more aquatic features such as areas of water with fish as well as land elements? If not, is there a reason? If so, I would love to see some videos of this if possible. Thanks for your time and for sharing these videos with all of us. :)
@xLoyal2daGamex I honestly wont be building small tanks because It takes just as long, and I cant make as much. Im not sure what you mean by "decked out". Does that include all the mechanical/electrical stuff? If so, then it isnt worth using all that equipment for such a small tank.
Holy crap man! You are truly a gifted individual with an amazing vision :) I just recently caught the addiction when one of my larger aquariums sprung a leak (at 3am of course!) and can't seem to stop thinking about building them... (haven't started my second one yet because I'm still deciding on how to make a background) Not sure what you do as a career, but I have to ask, have you ever considered being a landscape architect? I can tell you right now that you'd be AMAZING at it!!! -Briantobin9
Incredible man!! wow!! Great job!! exactly what I want to accomplish myself. I ended up not planting stuff...but I do have two tanks with pots of various carnivorous plants. I have misters etc too...currently have been running them for 2y.....just got new lighting...need to work out cooling. How is the air circulation in your tank? ANy fans? where is the air inlet and outlets? Will message u for more details. :p also...what kind of DSLR do u use? I got a D90 that I want to use to do this. :p
awesome tank by the way, what do you have in it. the plant growth is amazing. i have had a red eyed tree frog for about a year or two and im still learning.
@jgrimmier 1) Wow, eager to see the next one already. :-) 2a) What does a bacteria bloom look/smell like? (pretty much, how do I know I have a bacteria bloom?) 2b) What kind of lighting are you using? MH or VHO? 3) Great to hear... I will try to mimic that when I build my viv. 4) Will do
Hi there, Amazing system, thanks for sharing. Out of curiosity how long is this time lapse over? I'm interested in how it took to moss to start establishing itself or is that simply starter moss you've put there? Is the water in the central sump area circulated at all? What heating system is used? Thanks again!
Hi! 1st of all thanx for sharing...! very nice vid and beautiful work!! question: what kind of material is this, where the tree in the middle is sitting on and with which you made this "river"...?!? greez from Switzerland!
A little sparse, depending on what species will be in here But it still has my 5/5 approval for design and building skill. And 7/5 for video skills. Sick vid!
Specatcular light effects and project in general. The way these tanks are becoming one could skip out on an ecotourism trip. The new tanks mean hours inside staring at simulated jungles-
I am in Brazil and I am wanting to do such a project because I have some terrarium and a planted aquarium. I wanted to understand about the irrigation system and the flow of water or if it is evaporator for enlightenment. the other question is related to amphibians because they feed on that
Thank you so much, finally someone who makes a beutifull terrarium where a lizard/Snake can feel like its actully in a rainforrest. Make more of these vid pls, maybe a Desert terrarium next time. What kind of reptile lives in your terrarium? (I got uromastyx)
Id be interested in some type of setup, i have a 55 gallon aquarium, and have had an obsession with getting a dart frog tank, something mostly automatic other than cleaning and feeding. I love growing plants too especially micro stuff.
What is the dimensions of the aquarium? Did you have the glass custom made? I am sorry that you had to sell it. I look forward to seeing your next build.
@jpccusa1 I had cyanobacteria blooming in the water section. It looks like green algea, but much worse. The lighting is both high output T5s and metal halid.
Hello, Very nice work! I am French and I do not understand all the information on your site in English ... How you did to hide ventilation? What equipment did you support ventilation (it looks cardboard ^ ^)? How much time per day you ventilate? It is programmed? And finally, you have a photo of the cover of the aquarium to see the aeration, etc ... Thank you very much, I really hope you can help me ... You are an example ...
Not only is this the best designed terrarium I've ever seen, but the video is awesome too!
Double win!

DUDE it looks like you just went out into a rainforest encased a section of it in glass and brought it back home with you. Efen Sweet!
I put these videos on my phone and look at them every day.
really informative ..
really relaxing ..
spectacular.
thanks justin.
Very very impressive video Grimm. Thanks for the final build timelapse. A quick video to show us which frogs you choose would be much apreciated.
Wow, dude, this right there, is art!
Really nice Grimmer!

Beautiful planting. Loving the orchids, particularly the Restrepias

Beautiful paludarium, exquisite timelapse, and skillful editing. You did an amazing job on all of it! Thanks for uploading.
A great design and the time lapse makes it all the more amazing...thanks for posting.
Spectacular! I am glad you finally got it done. I remember the cardboard mock up!!
@Hyokenseisou Thanks a lot. I appreciate the compliments! Right now I only have 2 leucomelas in the tank temporarily until I find the perfect species of dart frog for it. Something rare and bold.
Great viv! Looking forward in using your ideas for my build. Could you show the rise and fall of the middle creek with the substrate/sand and leaves?
omg its amazing i wish i could pull something like that off! the flowers blooming are gorgeous in high quality time lapses!!
Great work! The moss and other plantings look great! Info on the names of plant species ie. the moss, orchids would be a great follow up!
Thanks again for posting!
Outstanding work. I just don't see how anyone can dislike that.....Madness, I say!
Really enjoyed the time lapse vid. Beautiful box, man. Thumbs up!
Thanks for this majestic piece of art.... great use of open space.... perfect!
Der König der Terrarien Designer !!!
Hut ab !

This tank is the reason I subscribed to you. You rock man!
WOW!!!! A pair of pumilio would go great in there, that would really make the tank
Moss is from aquarium stores, and I also got bits of moss from some of my orchid mounts and plant pots.
BEST! I've EVER seen!! Congrats to this Peace of Nature!
Best wishes for the Future!

Best tank I have seen. Thank you for the vids. Lots of ideas for a build (much smaller scale) :)
Absolutely gorgeous work. You have taken vivariums to an art-form. Can you elaborate on how you make your vines?
Thank you
hay justin, nice set ups im just geting into this hobby and your vids are my favorit to watch!
Wow.....Now I HAVE TO make one. Amazing job.
This is truly a piece of fine art. Good job on the tank and the camera work! Do you find it to messy to use plants that require soil?
So glad I found this channel man, such and epic vivarium man.
this is AMAZING!!! Congratulations on this epic build, sir.
WOW i love this and what are you putting in it i would love to see it in action and ONCE MORE YOU MAKE A MASTERPIEACE KEEP THE GOOD WORK
Awesome work. Its almost sensual in a way. I agree that the video helps a lot in the presentation.
My absolute favourite build. If you get a chance I'd love to know what plants you've used. I can recognise some of the Broms but the flowering plants, orchids ? Any info would be appreciated.
Maybe the best terrarium setup i´ve seen around. Needs a pet!
you sir.... did just made my day perfect :D this is some awesome footage!
JUST PREFECT!!! everything about this video is amazing

Hey! Where are the building videos gone? It was super interesting!
Please put up your old build videos!

Hi there, go to "the peninsula" thread on dendroboard. There are pictures of all the plant types and where they are located in the tank.

Thanks a lot, glad you enjoy.
That is awesome! How did you do the timelapse of them budding? Camera tripoded over many days taking a few shots per day?
I was wondering if you could show (make a video) of how you perform maintenance on the tank. thanks
This looks awesome! Can I ask how you made that background? because i really like all the vines and strings coming out of it.
I am a big fan of your work! your tanks look so beautiful.
Thank you very much for sharing this w/ us. When my ship comes in, please build me a HUGH one in my living room wall.
A little sparse, depending on what species will be in here But it still has my 5/5 approval for design and building skill.
And 7/5 for video skills. Sick vid!
Great job, wish I could put together something like that!
nice work!!!!! rain system awesome
I love your channel mate! tell me how do you heat your tank? thanks again for sharing!
That tank is so cool! But in mine i have a hard time finding moss that grows like yours, so what kind do you use and where do you get it?
Specatcular light effects and project in general. The way these tanks are becoming one could skip out on an ecotourism trip. The new tanks mean hours inside staring at simulated jungles-
thank you for posting very nice tank

Been looking forward to this so much :D
Thank you Grimm
What did you coat the vines and background in?
Very natural, very great job dude!
What is this soundtrack ???
Where did you get the big piece of driftwood, it looks amazing!
this guy disurves way more credit than any other vivarium channel ever made :)
Have you got any type of filtration on this tank? Amazing tank man!
What is the dimensions of the aquarium? Did you have the glass custom made? I am sorry that you had to sell it. I look forward to seeing your next build.
thanks all lot man, you've been a great help!
@jpccusa1 I had cyanobacteria blooming in the water section. It looks like green algea, but much worse. The lighting is both high output T5s and metal halid.
Beautiful viv! What is the orchid at 2:56? Love it!
@jgrimmier So do you use heat lamps or just the fluorescents make enough heat. What temp is your tank at during the day?
How did you add the details to the background and wood? were you adding paint or mud?
Hey Grim,
Did you use a sump with this tank? Have you ever experimented with using one?
@Sivis1976 The boxes are made from fluorescent light diffusers ("egg crate"), and then wrapped in a weed blocker material.
I love your enclosure!!! Awesome job !!! O M G
Brilliant work!
What kind of misting system did u use?
been waitin for this for a long time, looks sick:)
This is amazing! And if you don't mind I'd like to ask, is that real moss? And if it is, where do you buy the moss?
wonderful! but did u not put some faunas?
What material uses for the first layer floor? sand?
Thank you, you make the best vivariums i ever see.
Hello,

Water is in the base in a small aquarium, and the substrate is Fluval Stratum.
is the top all opened screen? how do you get the glass to be so clear post misting? thanks.
that was awesome! great work mate
absolutely amazing man......just unreal
how do you get the moss to grow like that. i have a red eyed tree frog and have never been able to get it to grow like that.
nice work could you tell me what's the name of those spraying thing in th top of it
Hi man
Amaizing, but how long you wait till all this is grow?
You put seeds???
