Then my oldest daughter bought a Mexican Mustang for her husband because her Thoroughbred was too hot for hubby to ride. His name was Rafael, but we soon started calling him St. Raffie. What a wonderful video. We here in UK don't have the wide open spaces that you guys enjoy. I live in the countryside (Guildford , Surrey) and I've only known the horses of some ex-girlfriends. That horse-whisperer fella was cool. There was one horse, by the name of Harley, who stood at 18 hands and was the most gentle boy. Harley used to rest his chin on my hand as I stood inside the bottom of the stable door. I stroked his withers and the look in his eye was both calm and friendly. Those Wranglers are good guys. His herd kept running up the side between the mountain and a huge single rock formation and he came running up and down the gullies till he got within eyesight of me and I am glad he stopped to look me over. He was about 150 yards and I did not whistle at him again. He reared up and trotted back to his mares with his head and tail arched cause I was not a threat. Until he saw me he thought I was a challenge. Anyone in the history of big heards at that time knows of the white stallion I speak of. In the 70s my husband worked for the Nevada Test Site, building a power-line,all areas were restricted,no cameras etc.He would tell me the things he witnessed or saw while being there daily for 9 months.Seeing the Mustang on the mesa was one.
“Today, mustangs are no longer threatened and there is great respect for these horses.” Yeah, then fast forward to 2018 when Wyoming approved the culling of tens of thousands in order to lease more land to cattle ranchers. Believe me, there is enough open BLM land for all of them. The killing of these horses and burros is completely unnecessary, irresponsible and cruel. Humans are literally killing the planet in every possible way.
Alan Horning I agree with you about BLM at this point. But, there’s a little bit of racism in your comments. All white people are not evil. People are evil. Hopefully we have learned from that and it will not happen with the horses.

Genuinely was so happy to see the Horse Program for the inmates, that's a really wonderful thing that's happening - for the successes at least. It was really good to see those people with hope when their lives weren't what they'd possibly had wanted before (maybe they had their ideal life, I dunno) but some just seemed so happy with the horses :)
All prisons should be geared toward rehabilitation instead of punishment .I think it’s Sweden that has prisons that are all about rehab and their re offend rate is very low.
Good film ~ thank you Jan. Horses are my soul. I used to be a "horse tamer/wrangler" , started colts and worked with horses of all ages for 30+ years, not counting all the riding & stable work I did as a kid. My approach and philosophy is very much the same as Steve Mantle's etc. So glad he talked about how EGO has no place with horses, in the beginning and throughout their life with us.
Back in my younger years I used to live in Big Piney Wyoming with my grandfather. We had 2 paved roads, one going North/South ( North to Jackson Hole and South to Rock Springs) and one heading out towards the mountains to the west, my Grandfather and I would " ride out to the end of the pavement in his car and we could watch the wild horses be themselves, beautiful creatures in stunningly beautiful country. I miss those days. How bout we let THE PEOPLE of the states vote on where they end up after round up and not some thieving political hack! Novel thought. Thanks for the video.
I recently created my own documentary of my long ride across Ireland on my own two horses. We knocked on strangers doors asking for a field for the night and a place to camp! I think that video is the best way to capture the good the bad and the ugly and without storytellers like you to share these with others then the world would be a much smaller place!
This is one of the coolest documentaries I've ever seen. It was amazing to see how fast he was able to win the horse's trust without harming it. A true professional!
This is an amazing documentary which should be played at every school. It's so soul soothing to see how these unique animals are treated, respected, honoured and given the care and the chance to help rehabilitation for so many!!! Just perfect combination. I'd love to know more about the wild horse program and wish serves as an example for many prisoner systems around the world. Horses are powerful healears and able to transform lives of human beings in ways beyond our limited comprehension capacity. 👏👌🙌🙏💖
Dunno which kind of education are you trying to achieve with such documentary... Would be better to explain how to respect nature and wild animals by doing a step back and reach a compromise about the amount of land that we should leave wild. If i'd be the kid watching this docunentary I'd ask immedialtely: "Why are we renting / loaning milions of acres to ranches and put these amazing creatures in a situation where they risk to die from starving?" I guess an honest teacher would answer "Good point boy! The answer is: 'cause humans are greed and think to be gods".
That one inmate that braided the grey roans forelock. You can tell these guys really care about earning the horses trust and respect. Amazing for these horses but mostly for these inmates. I'm incredibly impressed and grateful that these beautiful, majestic animals are being TRAINED NOT BROKE by an amazing program. I'd love to adopt one.
If you are ever fortunate enough to have a horse adore you, that relationship will be one of the most precious in your life. I worked with a mare that would come and put her mouth around a bit because she like our riding time that much. BTW I'm a dog guy not a horse guy. Still, I like most critters.
But they are illegally removed from their family and legal life in Federal Land in Perpetuity. Does not give right to give you the horse to train. It belongs with its herd.
@@pechojayes it does. They are wild and should be left alone and their land should be left alone. Cancel ALL of the leases and give the land back to these wild.
I didn't know if I was going to like this video because it started off with the helo. But after watching it I came around and so a pretty good film. My hat is off to the men that treated these animals with love not just another way to make a buck.
Fascinating, on a number of aspects. The mid-section’s exposition on the results from differences between the Mustang vs Human-Bred’s legs & feet was thought-provoking. Subbed.
A beautiful documentary showing an exceptional love and concern by the participants (from wranglers to prison inmates) for these magnificent creatures, the wild mustangs. I hope this caring spirit still exists--from capture to adoption.
This is by far one of my favorite videos on UA-cam!!! What a great win-win program for the inmates to train and simultaneously heal with horses. Then the horses seem to genuinely love the bond with humans. If horses disliked being tamed, trained, and ridden by humans; they wouldn't allow it to happen. Remember: even hardened and strong criminals are afraid of these animals! I also LOVE that the older horses who are extremely difficult to tame are released into open fields to live out their natural lives. Not one of those horses being wrangled or captured seemed to be in major distress or pain. So many comments make it seem like these horses are abused, and the branch of government (BLM) is corrupt...??? Would people rather witness an overpopulation of horses dying everywhere in the open ranges? People have their facts and priorities mixed up for real!
@@JanDelaporte❤️Thank You for a fantastic video. Appreciate the work you did to make this. I’m very glad I came across it. Hope you are enjoying living in Europe. Happy Holidays to you and your Family! 🙏🇺🇸🤗
Today, or this morning, it was my turn to watch your great presentation about wild horses. I hope the programs to manage the American Iconic Mustang are still working out, funded and successful. Some of the archaeological history of a horse, as it relates to Spain, was kind of odd for me, as I had learned the Asian horse breeds (Appaloosa (oldest) and Arabian) predated a Spanish horse breed. Nonetheless, it was good to see humans learning a better ecological approach system for the Mustang. Many thanks for all the work and the show.
All of this, the land and the protection, thanks to the work and dedication of Wild Horse Annie and her love for the mustangs and her fight to keep them free and away from the slaughter houses, plus the abuse and torture in their capture which they endured for so many ages. One needs to be around horses and really know them in order to understand them.....I truly love horses and love the wild mustangs, they are unique animals.......I have been around horses since I rode my first horse at the age of three......Wild Mustangs are NOT your regular domestic type horse one sees in barns, they can be unpredictable but also they can be a true friend as well...it all depends upon the person who is around it, and they don't always accept someone. One such, I believe, is a true story which I grew up with, was that of Black Kettle, a wild horse, a black, free-spirit mustang named after the Chief of one the North American Native tribes.....It was untameable and valued its freedom so much that NO one was able to catch it, but when they tried to corner it, it jumped into the air and off of a cliff, landing dead at the bottom of a canyon. One thing I do know of is how much wildlife and habitat we are losing every day, all thanks to humanity's GREED and LACK of RESPECT for all life upon our world, let alone towards humanity itself. If humanity keeps going the way it is, not only will be losing more of our wildlife and habitats for them, but also more of all of our natural resources which humanity has taken for granted over the eons.....and of which all of us will be the ones for its demise. Humanity needs to change it attitudes, not only towards its own species, but also towards what life is left and which humanity has taken for granted upon our world.....with wiser use of our natural resources, and instead of throwing everything into the oceans and landfills, less wasting of our natural resources and more recycling, including in helping to conserve what we still have for future generations.....otherwise I see a bleak future for all upon our planet, our home, EARTH.
So beautiful and uplifting to watch. Horses belong free to run wild-not to capture and sell at auctions. They are our American heritage! Certainly not to sell as meat to be consumed!
toni hollencamp Horses don't deserve to be sold as meat, but they need to be captured because they're dying. Laws protect them from being killed and they're so overpopulated that they're starving to death.
Ashley Navei have nothing against eating cats or dogs either.IF and only IF they are raised in humane conditions.which in china they are not.but if i buy a dog and raise it as a pet and then eat it that's not wrong.he had a good free life.
Ashley Nave so what?there is this thing called different cultures.in Ecuador they eat guinea pigs.much longer than before they were even though of being pets.respect different cultures and not yuck at them.you eat cow but in India they would beat you up for eating it
So happy to see that horses are finally being recognized as having been from North America. They didn’t return only 500 years ago though. There are many artifacts found showing that our indigenous people had a relationship with horses long before the Spanish horses arrived.
They are not caring for them they are working at getting rid of the Wild Mustangs and Wild Burros. Their track record is painfully clear and on record by the many that follow these roundups. BLM does not take the care with the babies and older horses that this video would have you believe.my sugestion to everyone thing this to check out other reports. Check out any videos reporting the roundups then decide. The people that follow the roundups is. Good source to the truth.
@@robyndismon394 good question! It depends, usually on the type of criminal. But I have seen surprising successes. I've also seen complete disasters, often when a convict has finished his time at animal work-therapy and goes back to incarceration. The emotional backlash can drive inmates to kill, even if they were non-violent prisoners before. That's a side seldom shown.
Very few mustangs go into the prison training programs. I know. Im a tdcj corrections officer in Texas. Most are now illegally sold for slaughter to Mexico.😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠
@@cherylfowler5983 Unfortunately, I do believe you... Maybe it's wrong to say this to you, cause of your job, but I'd rather be rid of a generous number of convicts and use the money states spend for their keep and feeding on securing land for wild horses. Please don't be insulted! I don't mean to criticize you or yr job, I imagine it must be very hard and harsh. I just care more for animals than for humans.
Nth Americas attitude towards wild horse management is far better then Australia. At this point I am ashamed to say I am Australian and ashamed at Australian Governments management plan based on past history. Perhaps you will consider viewing some shocking footage of what us Australian people witnessed back in 2002 . How Australian gov decided to approach our wild horse situation as their management plan> Then maybe consider you in Nth America are more dignified and kinder then you may think. Based on studies the Nth American land can only withstand 40,000 wild horses at one time and this is respect to not kill them rather to catch and control the herd. Forgive me if I offend. This is not my intention at all sending you this reply. My hope is that passionate intelligent people such as yourself spread the word about wild horses in general so more people are aware . regards from Kylie in Australia.

Jan, nicely done. I enjoyed the documentary. A good first-look in to what the BLM faces in managing these animals. A lot has changed since 2002, adoptions have decreased and feral horse populations have skyrocketed. This has created a dire situation that hopefully the BLM can deal with soon. There's no denying that there are just too many feral horses now, both in the wild and in long-term holding facilities.
The "story" that wild horse populations have sky-rocketed is a complete fabrication. Their growth rate per annum is ONLY between 2 and 5% These BLM lies have been perpetuated to keep the "pipeline" of helicopter and 'gather' businesses in business - paid for by the Citizens of America tax money. Many horses go missing ... unaccounted for. They are denied water as ranchers fence their springs off for their cattle ..... on Public Land!! More and more people are finding out the truth ... the BLM is not a Government organization, they only have exploitation on their minds. Law suits are in the pipeline. This video is whitewash for naive people.
Over here is southern California we have them by our river , they hide out way in the desert and only come at night to drink from the river it breaks my heart how scared they are of us , they come in a huge huge group along with bulls and cows and mules but lately they are getting farther away . I admire them so much sometimes if you are super quiet they will come and drink next to you and it's amazing to see all them and the baby's
Words so True, Jan Delaporte! These lands were never slated for cattle only. Greed saw these beautiful Mustangs as a financial jackpot, money on each of their heads. There exists a silence, met at the borders of Kanada. The Slaughter Pipeline with such a gratious host pushing horses to their final days. Soon nothing left in those fields, deep in the mountains, a part of the landscape.
Skydog ranch has a sanctuary in oregon where they released the mustang Goliath and his mare Redlady. The reason for that is in this video because of BLM rounding up 2000 or so horses there. They have their own video about what was happening here. Check them out.
would love to drive through the area (coming from Southern Oregon) some day and maybe see some of the herds off in the distance running. Do you ever see them?
yeah well hate to break it to ya but there are almost no wild horses anymore because the government has rounded up almost every herd. if they weren't round up to be sold, they still are controlled by the BLM.
Thank you for this ... I’ve loved every minute of it. We have ‘wild’ horses in Australia. We call them Brumbys.. However, we’re still culling them. We have a lot to learn from your wild mustangs programme
Not only are you helping while mustangs get adopted but you also helping the inmates with the rehabilitation and ready to start a new life excellent program
Do some research into history. There were thousands of horses found west of the Mississippi in the late 1600's and early 1700's by early European explorers. The claim that the horse died out in north America is based on fossils from several million years ago. All other history was written by the European expansion. Not really based on science or math. For the horse to expand to the thousands found on the western plains and mountains during the western expansion the Spanish would have to turn loose thousands. Which if you know your history and the size of the ships that they available, and conquistadors would have brought possibly 1 or 2 stallions per ship, due to the size of their ships, and for the weight of their armor. So if if the Spanish brought primarily stallions,??where did the mares come from?? to produce all the horses found by the European explorers roughly 150+ years later.

I like you no matter what color you are. But as long as YOU like you, then other people’s thoughts on you shouldn’t matter.
This program is wonderful and helping people and horses. Loved watching the training process. Thanks
Thank you!
What an outstanding way to help a young man gain confidence and self worth! Glad there are such programs!,👍 🐴 🐎 🥰
Thx Sarah!
Yes I have seen you and your beautiful horses. I loved your video.
@@patsyhodge9071 thank you I am glad to hear that :)
Thank you for sharing this beautiful documentary! One day I hope to come and experience these amazing horses.

Ice Age of the mammals.
This documentary was well done. Thank you.
Many thanks!
Incredible story of how these wild horses are managed. Thank you. 🧡🌿☕
Thank you so much! :)
Dunno which kind of education are you trying to achieve with such documentary... Would be better to explain how to respect nature and wild animals by doing a step back and reach a compromise about the amount of land that we should leave wild.
If i'd be the kid watching this docunentary I'd ask immedialtely: "Why are we renting / loaning milions of acres to ranches and put these amazing creatures in a situation where they risk to die from starving?"
I guess an honest teacher would answer "Good point boy! The answer is: 'cause humans are greed and think to be gods".
That Horse Whisperer guy was amazing! I started to cry to see how beautiful, smart, and trusting that horse was!💕🐎

This is such a great Documentary!

That was beautiful. Wish we had more horses in Canada like the wild mustangs

How about to introduce the wild horses in Canada like wolf were reintroduced in the U.S.
Respect for the Nature, divine creation ❤️
Fascinating, on a number of aspects. The mid-section’s exposition on the results from differences between the Mustang vs Human-Bred’s legs & feet was thought-provoking. Subbed.
Thank you!
40:17 that is one amazing looking horse, big bulky one, beautiful animal!
You can really see the wild in its body shape, thick neck and solid legs!
A beautiful documentary showing an exceptional love and concern by the participants (from wranglers to prison inmates) for these magnificent creatures, the wild mustangs. I hope this caring spirit still exists--from capture to adoption.
Thank you!
I love the buckskin and skewbald colours. How beautiful they are. 🧡🌿
What a gift and loveable this trainer is!, Love him
This is by far one of my favorite videos on UA-cam!!!
Thank you so much! :)
Nothing but pure Freedom and Beauty at it’s finest!❤️

Today, or this morning, it was my turn to watch your great presentation about wild horses. I hope the programs to manage the American Iconic Mustang are still working out, funded and successful.
Some of the archaeological history of a horse, as it relates to Spain, was kind of odd for me, as I had learned the Asian horse breeds (Appaloosa (oldest) and Arabian) predated a Spanish horse breed. Nonetheless, it was good to see humans learning a better ecological approach system for the Mustang.
Many thanks for all the work and the show.
Thank you. much appreciated!
ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT ❤️
Thank you Jan for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Yes?
Tip, I hate long opinions, couldn't even read it all.
I 1000% agree with everything you said. Big question though- do you eat meat? Because if you do you're contributing in the biggest way to this problem
Laws protect them from being killed and they're so overpopulated that they're starving to death.
horse meat is very delicious what are you talking about?much better than cow or pig.
Csaba Seres yuck. I don't like the ideal of it. China eats dog or cat meat.
Ashley Navei have nothing against eating cats or dogs either.IF and only IF they are raised in humane conditions.which in china they are not.but if i buy a dog and raise it as a pet and then eat it that's not wrong.he had a good free life.
Ashley Nave so what?there is this thing called different cultures.in Ecuador they eat guinea pigs.much longer than before they were even though of being pets.respect different cultures and not yuck at them.you eat cow but in India they would beat you up for eating it
They are beautiful! I thought I saw Piccaso in that bunch. He is a beautiful stud!
What's sad is 'chasing/following them with a helicopter
That's a fine display of training by the fella with the buckskin. He needs his own channel.
All shld be left free to live free on the land meant for them
They love the wild life amazing beauty my friend
So happy to see that horses are finally being recognized as having been from North America. They didn’t return only 500 years ago though. There are many artifacts found showing that our indigenous people had a relationship with horses long before the Spanish horses arrived.
Can you guide me to resources for this? I have some people I'd like to show it to
Gorgeous animals. I’m happy to see them run free.
Beautiful Graceful Creatures I Love Them We Appreciate The The People Who Care For Them
They are not caring for them they are working at getting rid of the Wild Mustangs and Wild Burros.
This is a beautiful story
Thank you!
I’m not a huge believer in therapy but I believe those prison horse training programs must have a positive effect on some of those prisoners.
Does it have a positive effect on the horses as well?
How Australian gov decided to approach our wild horse situation as their management plan>
Then maybe consider you in Nth America are more dignified and kinder then you may think.

Delusional! The govt. are just out to eradicate them!
Thank you!
What a wonderful thing to do. I learned to ride when I was 4 years old.
Love horses.

The mustangs represent the North American wild horses of the Ice Age.
Lol. I noticed that too.
I’m sure the guy is skilled, but a very odd delivery.
Thank you for adding awareness

We have Wild Horses not 20 miles from my house in Prineville, Oregon. They are in the Ochoco Mountains.
He said Oregon.. they have wild horses there too.. not just Nevada
Skydog ranch has a sanctuary in oregon where they released the mustang Goliath and his mare Redlady. The reason for that is in this video because of BLM rounding up 2000 or so horses there. They have their own video about what was happening here. Check them out.
They have wild horses in the superstitious mountain range in Arizona too
would love to drive through the area (coming from Southern Oregon) some day and maybe see some of the herds off in the distance running. Do you ever see them?

Wow. It's amazing that all those horses came from europe introduced by the spanish.
