- From the HorseTV Archives, a fascinating story from our friends down under. In Australia, a "Brumby" is a free-roaming feral horse. "Brumbies" have roamed the Tinderry Ranges in the New South Wales high country of Australia for 200 years. When Greg Powell saw that only one stallion and two mares remained, he decided to bring them in from the wild- not an easy task. Greg eventually gains the respect and trust of the horses. The story follows Greg as he locates the last wild horses of the Tinderry Ranges and brings them to safety, while realizing a lifelong dream of building partnerships with truly wild horses.
As an prof. german horseman I rode (or drove) hundrets, perhaps thousands horses in my entire life. But all of them where tamed breeds of Europe, never a wild one. It's a complete other work and other basics. Hat off, my friend for your perfect skills and horsemanship too❤ Best regards from Germany

My Dad was Greg's very close friend and the property that Snowy and the other wild horses roamed when they were wild is actually my parents property and while Snowy wouldn't let anyone near her the other horses were actually very friendly and would even let you pat them. Mum has a story about me when I was about 5, wandering off from everyone and when they noticed I was standing under the chest of one of the horses patting it. I also remember the day that they blew up the boulder. If you listen, when Owen is explaining what they're doing, there's kids playing in the background and I'm one of those kids. In case anyone was wondering, this was probably over 10 years ago now and they were indeed the last mob of wild horses in the area.
Please tell me about the foal! Do you know anything about it?
@@joannsmith9 I was probably less than 5 years old at the time so what I can remember is kind of vague but I think the foal was particularly friendly. We had names for them all at the time but I can't remember any. I'll have to ask my Mum and Dad

The white mare runs so fully extended that her legs are almost completely horizontal to the ground. Wow. I'm grateful for you sharing on UA-cam. My long-ish life around horses is something I miss in illness. Don't watch horse exploitation in shows or races. Rescues are safe best lives. Good camera work. From Texas. Been riding English, Western, bareback all over the Americas including South. I look forward to seeing more to hopefully support financially.

What a lovely story! Those aussie saddles are amazing and I rode atop one for 10 plus years aboard a paso fino. My heart horse. I wish all wild horses were so lucky. Sadly in America it's one of the great down falls.

I love to see the Arabian endurance horses there. I didn’t know if they were used much in Australia. Seems a perfect place for a horse that can really travel the ground. I have Arabs in western Colorado USA, so great for mountain riding!
We also have wild horses in this area and the same concerns, population growth and over grazing problems. It’s difficult, love to see them free..

I was not aware there were horses in the Tinderrys, which run east side of Monaro Highway between Canberra and Cooma. I raised horses at Numeralla in the 80's. Beautiful film, great horsemanship, stunning mare, me favouring horses on the chunky side with lots of bone. Well done.
They're not there anymore. They've been rounded up, trained, and sold as stock horses, apparently.
@@CricketsBay When I saw all the greys, brought to mind the grey Arab stallion that lived for decades by a house on the road at Michelago, which had left his stamp on a lot of horses in that area, but no, not the same type at all. Lot of brumbies around Kiandra more lately that never used that district before, middens all along the road.
I would have called her Grace! But I just want to say you are amazing and so good to watch, well done on everything and all the best for the future with your beautiful horses!

Good video (except the crappy music) there aren't many people who think for the wildlife anymore let alone save some of them so what you have done for Snowy & the other Horses is fantastic, I've been around Horses since the age of 6 & I can't get enough of them, you show a Horse kindness & trust-you get the same back & more.
So great to see a group riding without the jangling sound of bits.

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip that you took with snowy. I am so elated because of the fact that you took a wild horse and made it not hard for her to adjust to be in twin . I look forward to see much more of your videos I am a horse lover I’ve never been on one but once but I enjoy looking at these beautiful animals as a Gallup tastic take care of their foal when they are Foaling.
Good Lord! This is Australia where men are tough and the horses tougher. These horses bred up over 150-200 years without the intervention of man, survival of the fittest.

It would be interesting to see what kind of foal Snowy would throw with an Arabian Stallion.. With her great confirmation and easy willingness and the beautiful head and heart of fire I think the foal would be an awesome horse to see and have.. That way you would have a good breed from both sides of Both breeds on opposite ends!

I have been a Waler fan and owner for some years. A while ago, there was a massive cull of these magnificent animals, and it disgusted me. I think that's what happened to the rest of your mob.
Appaloosa's introduced into Australia in the 60's and 70's so not true Brumbies. But still great horsemanship. Showing great affinity with the horse as opposed to traditional Australian Stockman methods of 'breaking' horses. Great scenery

Love watching your videos love what you do😊 I believe you’re very good horse trainer, and a very caring man and you are so right. We have to find another solution for these horses but not for them to be killed. That’s just like people so my question would be if there’s too many people and people keep having children after children after children, what do we do then we don’t dispose of them no you just don’t do that. I really enjoy your videos.😊

I couldn't find exact date but this is at least 2002. As He Greg shows Snowy off at the Equitana then. I figured it had some age to it. Going on the picture quality. Very cool. Sadly the shooting of these horses is still a massive issue.

I enjoyed your story of your part of the Australian bush @ of cause the wild horses (my favourite animal ) I originated from the high country in Victoria ,high plains, and the brumby horse. In which there none of them left.some wild horses are there, I’m told around 800 The rest. have been shot, as Vernon. Every thing has a place on this planet , it’s the management of humans that have ruined it all…😂❤

Wild horses need to be protected as they are part of our history. Why not establish a wild horse reserve for these amazing horses where they can be properly managed in a humane and sustainable way. 😊

Mustang rescue is a thing over there. Willie Nelson has a 700 acre rescue ranch with about 70 mustangs and a fairly recent song "Ride Me Back Home" that brings tears to the eyes.

The fact is that we, as humans, don't even remotely understand the horse or any other animal. We don't understand ourselves or each other. This, in a veil of appearing to be heroic and in aiding the brumbies, is an advertisement for the egocentric human condition that believes we must 'make use of things', contain animals for our purpose, be the great conqueror, dominate - even if we pretend to do so with the best intention - so that we can utilise the item of our choice. Firstly, randomly breeding more horses so that we can acquire attention, the 'best' horse for OUR choice, is utterly and completely irresponsible. In this country alone, countless thousands upon thousands or horses go to the knackery every day, many of those highly bred thoroughbred race horses, because ALL horses in this nation are overbred, whether for profit or indiscriminate stupidity and lack of conscious awareness of where that horse will potentially end up. This was not a good watch for me. I have worked with the unwanted animals of this world. It's ugly. I have endured the egos of this world and all their 'horse training' and it's ugly. We must begin to address our own responsibility and not the dollar that we worship and start by thinking why we are breeding so many horses - for profit or pride is virtually always the answer. The great tragedy is that all of the magnificent animals of this earth are wastage to the human control agenda. None of them are free, not even wildlife. This video does absolutely nothing to address a real perspective on the Australian brumby. It's about people, bla, bla, bla... win a prize, look good on close ups, be a hero, show the horse who's boss. Not much has changed. This wasn't information that was remotely good enough for the HORSE.
