I also have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and my corset from What Katy Did saved my wedding day. Four days before my wedding I couldn't stand upright or walk. My back had curved so much I had no balance or strength to hold myself upright. I don't have a fixed scoliosis, it's a 'malleable curve'. Basically, sometimes my muscles are so weak they can't hold my spine upright and I get a severe S curve. The curve is always there in a small way, but nothing like when that happens.
Anyway, I didn't know what to do. I had previously been in a solid, plastic brace for four years because of the severe curve. It didn't fix anything because the curve is malleable, it just kept me upright when my spine couldn't manage it on its own.
As is the way with EDS (mine, anyway. It is ridiculously variable), after four years I suddenly could hold my back straight(ish) again! So I hadn't been in the brace for about five years and no longer had it. But I needed something. Anything.
We'd had an emergency appointment with a doctor, who came to the flat - I didn't even know they did that! They got me an appointment with a spine specialist, but it wouldn't have been in time for the wedding.
In desperation, we went online and stumbled across the What Katy Did website. They had beautiful corsets and you would usually be measured and fitted to your exact measurements. With little hope, we emailed them and they got back to us straight away. They happened to have an underbust corset sample that was nearly perfect. And it was purple satin with black trim. My wedding colours. It would be under my dress, of course, but I would know it was there. They offered to ship it to us overnight, and it arrived in time for me to be at the wedding rehearsal in the church.
We brought my wheelchair into the church for the wedding, ready and waiting in case I could no longer stand or walk by the end, but i didn't need it. In fact, I made it all the way through the reception. It was a little miracle for my wedding day.

Lovely story, underwear is underrated in wedding attire these days when what’s “trendy” is getting married in a dress consisting of nothing but a translucent modern corset and attatched petticoat.
Which looks absurd in a formal setting if you ask me.
Also on the bridal themed television shows popular these days, none of the women seem to wear anything but knickers under the fitted dresses they try on. Sure there’s some structure sewn into these bodices, nevertheless, looks illfitted and very uncomfortable to my eye more other than not.
ANY well accomplished look ALWAYS starts with the undergarments.
      Scoliosis or not.
Happy to hear you got such good service by the company!

I wear knickers above the garter belt, that's how my grandmothers and mother did it. The knickers under the belt belong more to advertisement and film, because of the look, but it's not realistic for most women. I choose my garter belts specifically in styles for which this is suitable, there are of course styles in which it's impossible to wear knickers above. My grandmother wore the long style garter belt without any knickers at all and she used it when she was wearing the contraption for periods.

Make friends with a knitter, there are lots of wool alternatives for knitting (bamboo yarn is nice and modern acrylic yarns are actually very nice) Bonus to custom knit cardigans is it can be as bedazzled as you would like!

    • @katherinemorelle7115
      @katherinemorelle7115 3 роки тому +41

Also, for those very cold days where you need some heavy duty warmth- a thick acrylic coat with a silk (real silk, not polyester) lining. Silk is one of those natural fibres that is both very lovely against the skin (especially in the smoother weaves like satin) and is actually the best, pound for pound, at keeping warmth in. Wool is warmer overall, but it’s also much heavier.
The one thing that wool really does have over silk (and over acrylic, unfortunately) is that it will keep you warm even when it’s wet. No other fibre will really do that, natural or synthetic.
It as long as you have some way of keeping your clothes dry, silk is the next best option, especially as lining- it’s what really holds that pocket of warm air against you.
That being said, silk stocking can also be great for both warming your legs, and for keeping them cool in summer. Because it’s right against your skin, it can’t hold that pocket of warm air, but still works as insulation. So silk stockings are fantastic all year round options. And if I can find silk stockings comfortable to wear in the Brisbane (Australia) summer, where it’s very bloody hot and ridiculously bloody humid, everyone should find them wearable. Also, in winter they make a great base layer if you like to layer stockings, and you don’t like the feeling of wool on your skin. But if you’re actually allergic to wool, acrylic or other synthetic stockings are probably your best bet.

    • @eh3010

@@katherinemorelle7115 natural fibers like silk and wool are expensive for reasons they're pretty awesome. As a knitter I have a sad when people tell me they're allergic to wool. (technically the allergy is usually to the lanolin in the wool which helps give it it's awesome properties but semantics) it's a pretty amazing fiber that can keep you comfortable in a lot of weather conditions. There are some good manmade alternative's and other natural alternatives. Yarn made from alpacha is very nice and shouldn't as far as I know cause the same allergic reactions as wool due to no lanolin (I'm just a youtube commentor don't listen to me)

    • @katherinemorelle7115
      @katherinemorelle7115 3 роки тому +11

@@eh3010 my mum has a really lovely alpaca wool shawl- it’s so, so soft!
I’m used to my wools being pretty soft, as we tend to use mostly Merino in Australia- which makes sense, as we are the worlds largest producer of Merino wool. I cannot handle scratchy wool, I just can’t. I’d love to wear more cashmere, but it’s so expensive. (Though I was lucky enough to find a beautiful bottle green cashmere sweater in an op shop in my size- an AU/UK20, for only $10. I also found two pure wool sweaters that day, one NZ Merino, one Aus Merino, both for only $5 each. That was a bloody good day!)
And even Merino is still prohibitively expensive for me, unless I get ridiculously lucky when thrifting that is. But I won’t wear anything less quality than AU or NZ merino when it comes to wool. I’d love to get a nice alpaca wool something though- like I said, my mum’s’ side just so incredibly soft. Cashmere soft.

    • @katherinemorelle7115
      @katherinemorelle7115 3 роки тому +11

I meant to add the original prices of my awesome op shop finds, to give context as to how expensive wools usually are here. All three of the sweaters I found are still being sold by their brands, so I was able to price each one.
The cheapest was the black NZ Merino cardigan- at $160. Then the green AU Merino sweater- $220. And finally the green cashmere sweater was $240. So I managed to get just over $600 of knitwear for only $20. And all three items were in brand new condition.
Who on earth donates pure wool and cashmere? Who does that? I know I’m never getting rid of them, I’m keeping them until I die, and then passing them on to my daughter!

Long (sarong-style) Girdles (and long garter belts that are like those girdles) are a bit of an exception, but the standard garter belt is best worn UNDER the underwear/panties for ease of taking those necessary breaks. We see a lot of pictures of models doing the reverse to SELL the garter belts, but in reality, that's how it was done. Not super helpful in the case of your girdle-like belt, but if you have other garter belts, that's the way to "go" (and I can confirm this from personal experience).

If you can’t do wool, silk is a great option for keeping your body heat in. So maybe a coat that has acrylic on the outside, and a silk lining? (Real silk, not that awful polyester stuff, though I guess that’s okay, it’s just that I hate it and it won’t work as well as silk). That will most definitely keep you warm!
Also, I find the Harlowe by What Katie Did to be one of the most comfortable bras I’ve ever worn. The most comfortable is a longline cross your heart style- also wireless, but also gives just amazing support! My issue with the Harlow is that I gained a little weight, and I was already right at the very end of their sizing, so I can’t wear it anymore. And because the band has very little give- there’s only a very small elastic panel, that makes it great for support, not so great for fudging an extra couple of kilos.
And that’s the issue with most vintage style lingerie, they don’t really do plus sizes. Which is awful when you consider how many plus sized women wear vintage, as it’s the most flattering “modern” silhouette.
That being said, my fashion has gone backwards even further, so now I just wear corsets and nothing later than Edwardian anyway. And over the bust corsets are even more comfort than vintage bras (which are themselves more comfortable than modern bras).

I'm in the process of making my own "long line bra" which is really a regency bra and chemise. I broke 3 ribs several years ago, so wearing modern bras puts way too much pressure on my ribcage and causes extreme pain. The long line bras or more antique versions of corsetries, stays, bodies, etc, redistribute the weight and make the whole experience of breast support much more enjoyable. Considering I'm a size 44 F, it's a must to have support. And since, as you can see from my band size I am a plus size gal now, I have to make my own because LONG LINE DOESN'T EXIST IN MY SIZE. 😤

I've been wearing 'Granny Panties' most of my teen-adult life, I just find them so much more comfortable than lower rise knickers. I have a fairly high smallish waist and a short torso (very 1950s hourglass) and while I don't wear vintagey clothes (I'm much more 90s grunge/80s comfort in my aethetic) I adore the look of them and will wear a cute 40s/50s/60s style dress for more dressy ocassions where I can't get away with an oversized flannel shirt. (complete with a pop of red lipstick!)
Low rise knickers always hit me in the wrong spot, digging into my hips and tummy, creating awkward lines in tighter skirts/dresses. So yeah, high waist all the way

This, absolutely. Underwear can be such a sensory nightmare! I do enjoy those cute lacy short nightgowns and matching tank top/crop top and skirt sets that simply aren't appropriate outside the bedroom, but that's it as far as lingerie I'd ever wear, underpants gotta be those good old cotton granny panties. I hate lace and revealing cuts on my underthings. Tbh, the best solution I've found to underwear induced sensory frustration is to just wear men's boxers, it's not perfect but it's the best possible solution in my price range/spoons and time I can afford to throw at it, but when I do have to wear ladies panties... boyshorts are nice, granny panties are a necessary evil, and bikini cuts and lacy lingerie are... I'd rather go commando than wear that. And I have once, it was laundry day, all I had left was brand new underwear someone else bought me, only found out they'd gotten bikini cut by mistake after running out of wearable clean underthings.

Got SUCH a kick out of this vid. My mom was b 2/2/1938. I remember discussing girdles and such with her. "No self-respecting lady ever went out without a girdle" her grandmother (Zenida, cool name, but I digress) told her. My poor mother went to high school in the Coachella Valley. Think burning man, decades before the fun concert. It was HOT.

The 62cm one was fine as it was only for one day, but during the fitting the cap-woman kept saying things like "in all my years I've never known a young woman with such a big head", "it's just such a large diameter", "I didn't believe it until I saw the tape measure with my own eyes". Oddly enough, knitting got my feeling and strength back in my fingers, hand and arm faster than the traditional Occupational Therapy did to the point that the therapist told me to keep knitting and discharged me. Sadly the physical therapy failed me and had to make up my own therapy to get me back to pre-stroke quality, but is a mess not for here in this comment......

Because I'm a gigantic nerd and love seeing this kind of stuff: I did the inflation calculations of the catalogue ads shown in the video. I calculated from 1955's dollar value. Since the 50s were a fairly economically stable decade for the US, it's a safe bet to use 1955 as the average cost of goods for the time. I then translated the prices in each ad into the US dollar cost in 2020, as the ads seem to come from American catalogues. For the prices where a cent value is cut off, I added $0.50 to reach an average, so not all costs are exact.
    Bras:
    Bullet- $9.48-$24.20
    Longline- $48.29-$72.43
    Bra padding:
    10- $9.66-18.83
    11- $5.70-$11.11
    Garters:
    Corsets with attached straps- $28.97-$83.82
    Regular style garter- $14.39
Waist Whittler and Apron back- $19.12

Finding someone in your area, or at least your country, willing to work on commission for cash or yarn, shouldn't be too difficult. Especially if they get the added benefit of potentially winning a prize from a KAL. I am always curious about other peoples undergarments especially from other eras and found this very educationally entertaining. I thank you very much!

I hear ya on the wool. I'm allergic too. I have to check every label to make sure there's none in there before I buy. This is especially difficult in second-hand shops/thrift stores as the labels are often missing. People who know I crochet like to give me yarn sometimes. I always have to send the wool back.

-also, the daily garment title cards made me think Jessica definitely needs her own calendar in the merch. One with the full dresses, not a pin-up poster (not trying to be pervy).

I relate to the skin marking - I'm under evaluation for hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos, and I have, more often than not, HUGE, nasty dark purple bruises by my inner thighs due to the combo of boxer legs rolling up + tight jeans. Quarantine is a lovely excuse to NEVER wear tight clothing.

Lovely video, as always. You mentioned not being able to wear wool; so, in the U.S., especially in California, finding wool is really hard. Most cardigans are a rayon or cotton blend (super soft, not very warm). You might try the websites for Modcloth (mid-quality vintage stuff) or maybe even Macy's (major department store) for not-wool cardigans. Then get them embroidered to your heart's delight at a local custom shop (those are a thing here).
As for the dots showing up, it is likely a chemical reaction between a synthetic dye, a synthetic fiber, and your local water ph. Can't really help, but I've had it happen and the only thing for it is to be aware of the fibers/dyes and then be VERY careful how you wash.

I'm in my 50's and I remember my mom and grandma wearing those girdles! I don't even like Spanx!! 😜. Thank you for all of the history (I did a report on bras--the first was made from ribbons and a handkerchief--back in college, but either I forgot a lot of what I discovered or you did a better job researching! 🤓). I would like info on your preferred bras. I've reached the stage where I can't find a bra that fits and is comfortable (I've about given up an just wear sports bras!) Menopause has made it's mark!

Just wanna point out that I am sewing a shift as I watch this. And I am at the 6:17 mark where she talks about how it is uncommon to make your own underwear and I am literally making the most simple form of underwear right now... BTW a shift is super easy to make but still.

I've bought my cardigans at the Dutch sister site of EMP, I've found a few cardigans on the UK site that look pretty vintage to me. So if you feel like you need more warm cardigans that don't contain wool you could try to see if you can find a nice one over there.
