- In this week's episode, I'm going to talk a bit about the real costs of Overlanding. It's something I think a lot of people underestimate, but the dollars can add up quickly if you're not careful and aware of falling into some of the common traps with buying Overlanding gear and vehicles.
I'll walk you through the importance of deciding what type of trips you're going to take, which vehicle you want to build out, and then how much comfort and convenience you want in your build. I'll give you some real world numbers based on my experience so you can get a better idea of the true cost of Overlanding.

It can be helpful to remember that even though we see this hobby getting bigger and bigger the vast majority of folks who go dispersed or wild camping for the same amount of time that most of us “overlanders” do have zero idea what overlanding is. They are driving backroads in whatever they have, cooking over the fire or on their 40 dollar Coleman, sleeping in their truck or tent and are having a blast. Spend your cash on gas and adventures first, then start worrying about the gear.
Agreed!
Great advice, enjoyed video. For me it's no vehicle mods until paid for, don't go into debt for overlanding. Don't finance lift kits and tents
I think that's a great tip.
I tried to get my family to do this with me and we got a ground tent for the boys and dogs. For the wife and I I have a softopper for my 2010 Chevy Colorado with the truck tent add on. I’m looking at making a bed rack to go over the softopper so I can get a 270 awning.
Sounds like a great set up!
@@AllThingsOverlanding yeah I think it’s great. The only time I get them to go camping was during their spring break in March and I told them it would be really cold at night and none of them listen to me when I said sleep with layers on. They were all freezing and uncomfortable. I thought it was great.
I have a 2016 4Runner that I’ve been building for 3 years. I finally decided to buy a RTT this year. Planning on attending the MOORE Expo and wanted nicer accommodations than a ground tent. Next up is a budget friendly refrigerator, tired of dealing with ice.
Sounds kind of like my progression. I think you’ll really like the RTT and fridge!
Boy, I think this is a great topic as the years are been going with OverlandExpo and so many companies getting into the industry I think it’s a little over whelming for people starting out so I believe that’s why you started the newbie over landing on Facebook so people could ask questions to get the basics for starting out and then grow your gear as the more you go out and do things and using their vehicle or whatever they have I even seen an old station wagon with a rooftop tent on it on a forest Road. It’s all about getting out there and having a great weekend and enjoying yourself and telling stories over the campfire And sharing your experience with friends and family
You're totally right!
Great advise, I find I'm spending too much on wants instead of needs. The other issue is with the growing overland market it seems that when I do buy an item someone comes out with something newer and better.
That's true too. I've definitely gotten some gear and then a year later, seen a faster, more efficient version of the thing I just spent a fair amount of money on, come out.
$50,000 Bronco Raptor? LOL 😂 Try $85-$90,000
Pretty sure I listed Broncos from the base up to the raptor and gave a range of like $50-75k depending on options and trim but give me a time stamp if I said something wrong and I’ll go laugh at myself, 😂. If a Bronco Raptor was $50k I would have bought it, lol.
@@AllThingsOverlanding I will listen 🎧 again as I work on my 1990 Ford F Ranger V8 swap 🤣
@@stevebratten6592 Sounds cooler than a raptor ranger, honestly. 😀
Fauxverlander-LMAO.
Haha!
