Last show i went to Mikael actually asked everyone to keep their phones away during the show. But he gave the crowd a couple mins to take photos and he made all sorts of funny poses. Freaking legend.
Guys, the crowd is in a fucking trance, they're 100% immersed in the songs they love while they're being played. That's how a crowd really paying attention looks.
It surprises me it doesn't get mentioned more often. Absolute masterpiece. My all time favorite song. I listen to it everyday and somehow like it more with every listen
I have been in many an Opeth crowd. As fans, we typically are entranced while watching the prowess they bring to each instrument. One cannot mosh and stand transfixed. We choose the latter. Needless to say, it is a different kind of appreciation. It’s more of an eyes like hubcaps, jaw agape type of appreciation. Ya follow? What you saw was a crowd LOVING that shit. Hahahaha
It’s hard to mosh and get crazy when you’re seated. They’re from Sweden 🇸🇪. Michael and Jonas from Katatonia went to high school together. Early Opeth started as Swedish black metal and have grown into a more progressive metal band over time.
Yep, this band is not about slamming or moshing, this band is about the music. I'v seen them live in 2018 and all of us just stood, watched and listened to them
Great video as always boys! Opeth was formed as a death metal band in 1989 in Stockholm, Sweden, by lead vocalist David Isberg. The band name was derived from the word "Opet", taken from the Wilbur Smith novel The Sunbird. In this novel, Opet is the name of a fictional Phoenician city in South Africa translated as "City of the Moon".
Seeing them live is like the craziest”metal” show cus true fans of them that are there don’t mosh around like a drunk idiot. They paint an atmosphere where you become entranced.
Longtime Opeth fan here. I've seen them live many times and they always kill it. Some suggestions for reactions include The Moor, Deliverance, The Drapery Falls, Heir Apparent, The Lotus Eater, Face of Melinda, Windowpane, In My Time of Need and Burden. Some of those have growl vocals and some do not. Enjoy!
since the 90's I have been jamming Opeth using "tape trading" something we did in the early days before the internet was a thing. The cool thing is back in the MYSPACE days, I got to tell Mikael Ackerfeld (the lead singer) that I wanted their song HARVEST played at my funeral. Mikael responded to me personally to say that he hopes my funeral will not come any time soon and thanked me. I know it's a small thing, but I'm happy my favorite band knows my intentions.
I "discovered" this band about two years ago. I was listening to a Tool song on UA-cam while cooking. The song ended but I couldn't change songs due to a lot of bbq sauce on my hands so I let it play. Opeth came on with the song "Sorceress". I became an instant fan. I now own maybe a third of their albums and can't wait to complete the collection.
Opeth are Swedes :) Their name derives from the novel "The Sunbird" by Wilbur Smith where there is a fictional city called "Opet", the city on the moon. To make the word a bit more "english-sounding", they just added the h. BTW their style is considered Progressive Death Metal (not even close to Power Metal 😊) at least the older stuff... The most recent stuff, well... I'm not sure if it's still metal anyhow.
they are from sweden.. Note: in the studio version, the part where he sings clean, it's actually being sung by 'Porcupine Tree' vocalist, Steven Wilson.
I know most metal concerts I used to go to would normally be a booze fest and I’d mosh trample as many people as humanly possible. An Opeth concert though, I’d spend most of the show just standing there in awe. An experience to say the least
O peth The band name was derived from the word "Opet", taken from the Wilbur Smith novel The Sunbird. In this novel, Opet is the name of a fictional Phoenician city in South Africa translated as "City of the Moon". They _ (Mikael Akerfeldt) simply added the H at the end.
Their live performances are amazing, but you should try some studio songs. The growls hit different. Blackwater Park or To Bid You Farewell is a good contrast between their progressive death metal and melodic style. Their later style is more 70s prog inspired, I'd suggest Moon Above, Sun Below.
You go to an opeth concert to experience the majesty they create. You stop and listen to every word, every sound they produce....you dont waste time punching and smashing into others. you stand and listen, and become a better person
Guys. Consider doing the studio version of these songs as you get further down the line with Opeth. It really captures the nuances of the music much more fully. Also, Bleak is one of my favorite songs of all time and trust me the studio version is better than what you just heard. For the next Opeth reaction, I recommend Serenity Painted Death off their Still Life album. Another masterpiece. Anyways, Cheers and keep up the good work!
I really prefer people's reactions to Opeth's songs in studio. They're so meticulous about the arrangement and recordings and everything, its their best foot forward on the albums. It really should be what people listen to first.
Opeth are ABSOLUTELY in the progressive metal genre. Go through their entire discography and then they aren't they started out with two Black metal albums and have slowly morphed into a heavy version of Yes! in the last 20 years. And if you dont know who Yes! are, they are one of the most prominent prog rock bands on the planet. You guys should check out their album Watershed for a full display of the prog-ness!!!
It's a different kind of metal audience that goes to see Opeth. It's music fans that are there to appreciate the music itself. Same as the kind of music fans that go to Dweezil Zappa and his band. People that want to be blown away by extremely talented players. Another great Opeth tune to check out would be "Reverie/Harlequin Forest".
Insomnium - A Heart Like A Grave I’ve got a feeling y’all would love them, they’re best described as ‘Melo-death’ or melodic death metal.. it’s truly an Amazon band!
Ghost of perdition is the next logical reaction by Opeth. Its usually the go-to Opeth song that reaction channels react to first. Personnally id love to see you guys react to it but the live version from 2006 at the roundhouse tapes where his growls were god-tier. In your reaction, Mikaels growls were not on point and its actually recorded 1 year before they changed their sound, never to growl again in a studio album.
You guys need to do Lotus Eater by these guys, it's probably the most progressive one of their songs. It just makes you fall straight outta your chair.
I've seen Opeth live a couple of times. You become entranced. Glad you guys are tapping into this stuff. Harvest is a good place to go for a different sound from them.
Opeth is the name of a fictional city in a Wilbur Smith novel (I've read some of his stuff decades ago, including that book, The Sunbird, but it's not for me) edit: according to Wikipedia that is where their name derives from.
Blackwater Park the album this is from is one of the greatest metal albums of all time. The title track is absolute fire! And dont worry about the crowd - they dig it
Great choice, I love this song. Y’all need to check out more Opeth, they do real heavy and also real chill tunes. Try reacting to: The Grand Conjuration, In My Time Of Need, Blackwater Park, To Rid The Disease.
I love this song, one of their best, the studio track is notably different as some of the clean vocals are sung by the producer/guest vocalist Steven Wilson which produces an interesting back and forth with Mikael Akerfeld. Your right about them being Swedish, and the flag was for Norway, for the first 15 years the band was very much in the Progressive Metal genre but for the last 10 they've been playing a 70's prog/hard rock sound and dropped the extreme metal side of things, though still perform the old songs live. I've seen them live about 5 times now, you don't really get the moshpits at an Opeth gig but everyone is definitely paying close attention to them nd are fully into it. I'd suggest When for another look at their earlier material and Moon Above, Sun Below for what they're currently like.
Opeth is my favorite band of all times, you guys should definitely do Face of Melinda, Cusp of Eternity, The Moor, Harvest, The Devils Orchid and Heritage. Any of these songs are fair game, all good both live and studio, love you guys, shout outs from Brazil. 🖤🤘
Seen Opeth a few times live, the singer/songwriter is incredibly skilled AND talented. Most of these incredible metal bands are the creation of a single person that uses session musicians like opeth
Opeth is from Sweden :) I recommend doing the album versions though. The growling were perfect on this album. And so was the mix. Also Steven Wilson does guest vocals on this song on the album.
Gotta start doing studio versions, as good as they are live, there's much more to hear in the studio version. That being said - Ghost of Perdition studio version!!!
I would highly recommend you react to a studio song of Opeth. Listen to 'Ghost of Perdition' if you want growls. Listen to 'Windowpane' for a more chill sound. Thanks.
About the poker, you really can't say any percentage because for single played hand the luck part is very high, but more hands you play the luck component decreases and skill component increases.
side note.... review anyting from Polkadot Cadaver. I suggest "Chloroform Girl"... maybe "Powdered Pink Baby Coffin". and a must view is "Purgatory Dance Party"
One of my favorite bands of all time, agree on trying a studio track. They’re great live but it’s hard to capture that sound from the performance. I’d suggest the song Hessian Peel for another reaction. BTW you were right, they’re from Sweden!
Might I suggest you listen to Ihsahn or the band Katatonia. I honestly can say anything they've done is quite good. Personal favorites of mine are "Until I too Dissolve," and "Called by the Fire," by Ihsahn or "The Racing Heart," & "The Parting," by Katatonia. Studio versions would be better to get the full effect and small subtleties of their sounds. Keep it goin y'all
Knew you’d like them. Check out soldier of fortune and coil together. They’re both short so it won’t be a long video to do them at the same time. Shows the diversity of the band’s style of music. Like you did with TOOL you’re now discovering Opeth. They won’t disappoint you
With the poker you guys were talking about I would reverse the 80-20, I have a friend who is extremely good at poker they studied mathematics and statistics at university. They’re able to figure out how likely a winning hand will come for them from their initial cards, they tried to explain stuff to me but I studied Ancient Greek philosophy man I understand Plato’s arguments in the republic but start talking about stats and my brain starts thinking about what would happen if sharks grew legs. It is a very mathematical skill plus the bluffing ability which is kinda acting I suppose.
Opeth are often considered to be "progressive Death Metal" in their early days and have more recently moved into more of a Progressive Rock direction (no more gutteral vocals on the last few albums). Personally I quote the kid from Shrek and say "DO THE ROAR!!!!!"
I know you guys get a brisket shit load of requests, but for the tears of seitan! Check out Cynic (anything off their album(s) Traced In Air and Kindly Bent to Free Us) Notably the songs “The Space for This” and “Kindly Bent to Free Us”. Guys, the crowd is in a fucking trance, they're 100% immersed in the songs they love while they're being played. That's how a crowd really paying attention looks.
Couldn't agree more. The best concerts I've been to I mostly stood still in a trance like state. And pure joy, laughter and screams in between songs.
Opeth to me never has been music to mosh by but to go with the flow and kinda lay back
Kinda how I’ve seen the crowd at a Portal show, in a trance lol
I don't bother recommending Opeth to friends of mine who are into stuff like Slipknot or FFDP. They would never get it.
The epitome of that being the Indian princess and the dead head dude in the ‘Since I’ve Been Loving you’ Song Remains the Same Live performance
The studio version also features Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree on vocals, he also produced the album as well as several others.
I love the live version but I think first listen should always be the studio album.
I highly recommend Ghost of Perdition and The Drapery Falls by Opeth
Bleak is from the Blackwater Park album. Had the luck to see Opeth in Chicago before the Wuflu lockdown. Absolutely amazing live band. Very intense.
Blackwater park is an absolutely insane song by them. I don’t get wowed frequently but it almost gives me a spiritual experience.

Opeth - in my time of need
Tool - Reflection
Deftones - 976evil
Dream theater - stream of consciousness
Loved this! Lifelong Opeth fan
You need to do more Opeth!
Harlequin Forest
Sorceress
Blackwater Park
Ghost of Perdition
they did Harlequin Forest already
amen to harlequin forest best song ever
For the love of God, please listen to Blackwater Park by Opeth. That song (and entire album) is a masterpiece.
Yep, this band is not about slamming or moshing, this band is about the music. I'v seen them live in 2018 and all of us just stood, watched and listened to them

Fantastic choice! A masterpiece!
Saw Opeth... played for a hour and half... played 5 songs ha! And I agree the crowd is just in a trance and enjoying the journey!
5 songs!! Lol
8:43 my reaction was the same, after all the growing he started that melody and I fell in love with his voice
Face of Matilda, Drapery Falls, Window Pane, In my time of Need...Wwaayyy up there!!!❤❤
If you guys want to do some more Opeth, I highly suggest doing Ghost of Perdition. I think it's the best song they've made.
I second this
Harlequin Forest
not their best, but certainly a classic.
Absolutely the best one

Nice, welcome to the deep end. I went from Tool to Opeth too :-).
Opeth - The Grand Conjuration
Opeth are Swedes :)
Their name derives from the novel "The Sunbird" by Wilbur Smith where there is a fictional city called "Opet", the city on the moon.
To make the word a bit more "english-sounding", they just added the h.

The most recent stuff, well...
I'm not sure if it's still metal anyhow.
Yup, definitely morphed from progressive death metal in their heyday to progressive rock.
@@doranbacigalupi1059 I'm not hating it per se... Guess Mikael's growling back in the day took it's toll in the end
@@richtigersoan i mean he did it for 2 bands. Bloodbath and Opeth.
they are from sweden..
This song is my namesake and like most Opeth songs, is an absolute banger.
One of the best bands on earth! 👐🏼 My favorite song.
Opeth- The drapery falls
O peth

When I was a kid I showed this song to my dad and he didn’t believe that a human could make that noise without effects
NOFX t-shirt is much appreciated dude !.. excellent !

True story. Best experiance o my lfe was seeing them at 1st ave in Minneapolis.

I have an identical one ☝️

Time to hop aboard the Rush train. The spirit of radio or natural science.
Awesome! Windowpane and The Drapery Falls are awesome as well.
Wasn't ready for that TikTok this early in the morning

OPETH they are like the pink floy of metal
Seen Opeth a few times live, the singer/songwriter is incredibly skilled AND talented. Most of these incredible metal bands are the creation of a single person that uses session musicians like opeth
They actually have good voices when they sing
Welcome to the Opeth rabbit hole.
React to Dirge for November by Opeth please. It is a very pretty and dark song song. Also the flag is Norweigan.
Opeth is from Sweden :) I recommend doing the album versions though. The growling were perfect on this album. And so was the mix. Also Steven Wilson does guest vocals on this song on the album.
Albert hall is a nice live album though (the concert in the video).
Holyshit suspended really cool I'm going to have to go back and see what the catalog is all about
Gotta start doing studio versions, as good as they are live, there's much more to hear in the studio version. That being said - Ghost of Perdition studio version!!!

This is my favorite Opeth song!! You guys need to check out Battlecross - Push Pull Destroy or Sylosis - a dying vine
Opeth! My all time favorite. Some great suggestions here in the comments.
One of the best live band out there together with Meshuggah, Ghost and Avatar 👊🏼
One of my favorite bands of all time, agree on trying a studio track. They’re great live but it’s hard to capture that sound from the performance. I’d suggest the song Hessian Peel for another reaction. BTW you were right, they’re from Sweden!
Prog thrash- vektor recharging the void. Opeth is differently prog.
RUSH THURSDAYS!!!
Opeth A Fair Judgement 😜
Y’all still gotta checkout the best live performance ever ‘Since I’ve Been Loving You’ by Zeppelin
Might’ve been said already but the Roundhouse Tapes are where it’s at if you wanna enjoy this band live. His screams are much better on those.
Keep it goin y'all
You should do Therion son of the staves of time
They are one of the most unique bands you'll ever hear
Opeth are from Gothenburg, Sweden
BTW people from Sweden are Swedish; people from Denmark are Danish
Knew you’d like them. Check out soldier of fortune and coil together. They’re both short so it won’t be a long video to do them at the same time. Shows the diversity of the band’s style of music. Like you did with TOOL you’re now discovering Opeth. They won’t disappoint you
Opeth are huge Voivod fans ;) btw...
Instant like
Demon of the fall
ATTA BOYS!!
You guys deserve it to yourself to check deliverance
Opeth concert ....you dont headbang, you are in an another world... no hipsters there.
Katatonia - Leaders
With the poker you guys were talking about I would reverse the 80-20, I have a friend who is extremely good at poker they studied mathematics and statistics at university. It is a very mathematical skill plus the bluffing ability which is kinda acting I suppose.
Spiritbox - Constance. You still haven't made a reaction this video, omg! If you decide to catch up, check out the background first.
Opeth are often considered to be "progressive Death Metal" in their early days and have more recently moved into more of a Progressive Rock direction (no more gutteral vocals on the last few albums). Personally I quote the kid from Shrek and say "DO THE ROAR!!!!!"
Mikael Akerfeldt is the master of stage banter too.
OPETH THURSDAYS!!!!!!!!!!
(Did ya catch the double th?)
OPETHTHURSDAYS!
Please???
I know you guys get a brisket shit load of requests, but for the tears of seitan! Check out Cynic (anything off their album(s) Traced In Air and Kindly Bent to Free Us) Notably the songs “The Space for This” and “Kindly Bent to Free Us”. Their bassist just passed away last week and he was a 🐐 so you kind of have to.
Do some more from this album, but do the studio versions.
Gotta do prog trash metal band vektor- recharging the void! Its gonna blow your socks into outerspace.
