Take a modified Land Rover Defender and a 60 Series Toyota, a couple of dedicated and experienced drivers and we've got a greart crew to do some High Countgry tracks. Kick off from the Wombat Valley and then we're off - if you can't enjoy country like this, you can't enjoy life.
Forgotten gold fields, hidden water holes, this video had the lot. Yes, it's more than a few years ago now but in the world of four wheel driving the only things that change are the vehicles getting softer and the tracks getting shorter. You want to know about beadlocks, locking diffs, to winch or not to winch - here''s the info you need. That and tyre pressures is what gets us through.
So how do trips like this kick off? Here's what I wrote a long time ago in the magazine story that ran alongside this trip:
“You who?” I said, trying hard not to listen to the gargling noises coming from Chooka Morris. Mate, of all the times to show everybody how you can knock back a schooner while eating a couple of prawns, this wasn’t it. Here I am trying to pretend I’m having a hard day in the office and the Chookstar’s making more throaty noises than a buck koala after a big night on the leaves.
“Oh, Tim, how you goin’ mate? Yep, just down at the post office trying to buy a stamp to send those expense claims in mate. Yep, noisy bloody post office eh? Must be pension day up at the special school again…”
I stuck my finger in my left ear and screwed the phone to my right. Just then Dorelle, our barmaid to the stars down here at the mighty Mudflats Hotel, started making a whole lot of whizzy signs in my dial.
“Hang on mate. What’s that Dotty?” Oh, I’m on the landline, not my mobile. Tim already knows I’m at the pub. In fact the randy bastard just tried another one of his academic lines on Dorelle while she was pushing through the crowd to hand me the phone. One of these days he’ll get a free plate of prawns for his trouble no doubt, he’s certainly put in some ground work. Damn these wireless phones, I thought I was on the mobile…
“No, I said I was on my way to the post office and someone put a clamp on my wheel outside the pub. What’s that? A high country trip? No worries mate, I’m in for sure!”
