A CLEAN Tank is a DEADLY Tank! ,

- The secret to a healthy, balanced aquarium is to duplicate, as much as possible, a natural environment. Father Fish explains the danger of creating an environment for fish that is sterile. Sterile environments are susceptible to severe infestation by dangerous pathogens. We see worse problems with pathogens in fish tanks than exist in nature. This is caused by failing to create genuinely balanced systems in which pathogens are kept in check.
Do not be afraid of natural aquariums but welcome them as the safest and healthiest possible method for keeping your precious fish.

Thanks for saving new hobbyist from the real enemy father fish! You're my inspiration in fish keeping.
This
I second this.
Same❤
I never felt like I want speed up Father Fish videos
I find his tone of voice very calming
Yes! Please don't edit and speed up his speech! We are here for the calming, genuine nature of FF.
Me who would never cleaned his room- "I have trained all my life for this!" (never cleans FF tank)
😆
Yeah, it's pretty handy for someone who's chronically ill too & can't afford to babysit a tank.
I stumbled upon your channel about a year ago and realized that everything you say truly does make sense. The more we can make the tanks close to nature the better.
The greatest achievement I thought I could get would be to have the fish breed in the tank, which never happened before. Now I have 4 generations Mollys in my tank, even 2 generations of Amano Shrimp in the same tank. And the best part is I don't even have to do anything anymore. No more cleaning, no more feeding, no more water changes, no more worries, no more stress. It all takes care of itself.
You truly are the Father of Fish Keeping. Thank you so much for all the help and great advice that you give us.
The anime and fish fan can relate
I have tanks for almost 18 years. I recently started to watch Father Fish videos and learn from it more than all those years pur together. I love natural looking tanks. Thanks FF.
Your Tanks aren't ugly there just natural how nature intended keep up the good work and spreading the good word on how to keep fish
I am celebrating finding you. I was frantically searching for info as someone considering getting started with first fish tank and was overshelmed by everything I heard at pet store. I am so happy to find this. You are what my nature interested kid needed ❤
His system really does work.
Did anyone else catch the ad Cory and Aquarium Co Op ran about “What do you do during a power outage?” and it was trying to sell some device that automatically switches a generator on during a power outage? You know what I do to my tanks during a power outage? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. And everyone is fine.
I also see beauty in other forms. well said.
love ya Father Fish
Thank God for your message about creation.
🙏
Nature isnt ugly, its nature, the beauty is in the nature itself, its free and wild, raw beauty
My tank is yellowish, no filter besides the plants filtering it, i try to replicate natural environments from where these fish came from, sadly some fishes aren’t used to natural environments nowadays
I was new to fish keeping in January this year. I was making the mistakes of cleaning my tank to a point it became obsessive. I was even testing the water parameters three times a day!! I found your channel, and changed my substrate to dirt and sand, bought some plants, and I finally stopped being obsessive with water changes and checking the water. I simply watch their behavior and my plants. It’s only when I started doing this that my fish grew bigger, my plants started to thrive so much that I have to keep trimming them back! I have Java ferns spawning babies so fast when UA-camrs say it takes 6 months. I don’t understand why it takes them 6 months when every week, I see new babies on my Java fern leaves. I stopped using chemicals, and I let my otocinclus take care of algae (he does a good job and I think I’ll give him a raise for his hard work😂)
I have a hard time to keep the java fern. Not sure why. May I know your environment (or water) temperature and lightning parameter?
FF my 75 dirted tank plants are growing beautifully. I’ve already had to trim them back. Im glad I found your channel.
Wishing you a Happy Healthy and Blessed weekend Father Fish 👍
Excellent !. I do not and can not understand why the sterile tank promoters can not grasp this method. I was once in the sterile tank brigade, always had sick fish and dying plants. 12 months back I stopped the water changing, the substrate cleaning, and all the other that went along with it. I have now got a tank which cleans its self , no more sick fish and the tank don't smell when you lift the lid. I just let nature run my tank now and go along with what it wants to do, I found out this from your video's FF. I Thank You so much
You have changed the way I keep fish and since then I’ve rarely lost any, thank you Father Fish. ⭐️
I just love you father fish❤thank you for inspiring to create several natural fish tanks that are thriving just like you said they would..I truly appreciate all your wisdom
Thank you for sharing your scientific speciality with such passion and clarity.
Celebrate nature! Love this ff. I’m so glad to have found your channel a year ago this month. Wish I would’ve known all I’ve learned in that time all those years ago when my love for my aquariums would ebb and flow. Now I have my natural dirted deep substrate lushly planted tanks and my love for keeping aquariums has been rekindled. I have you to thank for that. ☺☮❤🐠🦐🪴
Thank you so much!!
This is a revolution, i like so much!!!
the best knowledge in fish keeping.. I'm on 30tanks now.. proud and happy.. it is so easy.. tq pops.
I absolutely love you Father Fish!! I’m learning so much after being a reasonably new small aquarium owner. Thank you for all your advice. I’m falling in love with our fish, almost as much as you love fish! 😁🥂🙌🏻⭐️ Greetings from Australia and keeping being awesome! 🙌🏻⭐️
Insightful indeed. Well explained, shout out to Father Fish!! I've incorporated your recipe for a stable and thriving aquarium, much respect!
I found this sewage water canal and wow that mud had a ton of diversity, flatworms, daphnia, scuds, snails, worms, perfect for my 4 spined sickle back, I always get leaves and stuff to put in my aquarium from creeks.
Amen Father Fish, trust your natural system 😊!
Love to see the notifications from a new father fish video
Another great and inspiring video FF! I’m sooo happy I found you a couple years ago on here it truly has changed the way I look at and obviously maintain my aquariums. 😁👍
My tanks have always neem a little funky.. So many of my buddies poke fun at them but I've had the same fish for years and years. There's no plastic plants, fake gravel and I only have a bio-wheel and powerhead to move water in each one. I always thought it was odd to bring nature into the house, in the form of an aquarium, and then proceed to keep it as sterile as possible. Love your channel and your set ups.
This was either about fish, or an end of the world prophecy
😅
Fantastic video and what a great speaker! Love your passion ! I would love to come up this Wednesday and share my two dirted tanks with you!
Please do. Watched and subbed this morning. Sorry I did not catch up with you earlier. Excellent channel.
@FatherFish thank you I appreciate you
Thank you father fish ever since I found your channel I don't randomly lose fish anymore following what you do. Use to do 50% weekly water changes for all 16 tanks and I tell you what the time and the money in dying fishes and buying meds was crazy. Thanks 🍻
Well said
You are a patient teacher aren’t you. You are repetitive which my ADD brain needs 😉. And, YOU ARE SO DEEPLY INSPIRING!! I’m learning. I’ve been one of the scared ones, but I keep coming back for more, and know I’m going to get there!
Thank you SO much for your teachings! I have 8 tropical tanks running. I only have 2 dirt/sand. The others have river pebbles. I haven’t done a water change since mid-February (1.5 months).
I wanted (still want) to convert my pebbled tanks to dirt/soil but I have SO much life in the tanks, I think it’s impossible now. I added a ton of plants, thanks to you, and my water is clear and the creatures/plants are thriving 🤷🏼♀️
That is awesome!

Hi father fish absolutely love the videos im so glad to see someone making videos on natural tanks
Danke für Ihre wertvollen Videos. Ich habe viel gelernt von Ihnen. Dank Ihnen weiss ich jetzt, was ich falsch gemacht hatte.
Liebe Grüsse aus der Schweiz 😘
My tank is doing great! All I do is feed the fish and change filter elements. The rest takes care of itself! Thanks Father Fish 👍🏼
FF.... You where preaching again! And I say a biggg Amen!!!!
great video FF! Awesome points! 👍
I am so Greatful and proud my self as you are my main mentor of my aqua life as a teacher, i accept your advice and it happen to me a sucessfully keeping my all fish in my tank with great natural and make me more easy and easy to keep fish tank more natural like your ,love you my mentor such an Honer to you long live ( FF)
Very true, I have been telling this for a long time ,
Some aquarium filters clean the water almost upto drinkable condition 😂,
It’s all become a business,
For example in AROWANA farms, they breed them in muddy ponds & say Arowanas should be kept in crystal clear water, 😂
Your plant deal just arrived & everything looks great!
Can't wait to get this new tank planted & cycled!
(I wanted a natural system for my bettas, so I got a couple of long tanks to mimic the muddy streams that they love so much.)
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you 🙏 I was planning on getting a fish tank soon your videos help me understand
Makes absolute sense, i used to clean my tank once every month and a half, with about a 40% water change, abd without fail id loose some or theyd be stressed as hell, especially my oldest survivors, if i do water changes now, its no more than ten percent and MINIMAL cleaning of the gravel and next to no cleaning of the filter, and they are absolutely thriving.
I love you thank you Father fish
I love how you read and heart out comments
Another beautiful video I absolutely can't wait fir your live stream with Tony Phillips 2day father fish
In Belgium we now have to ask permission to the municipal office to buy any fish since 2023. If you don't have the paper you can't buy fish. Also it's illegal to take anything in the rivers, even stones or branches in the forest. Gold fish and Guppies are considered as domestical animals, so when you don't treat them correctly it's legaly as bad as bad treatment on a dog or a cat. The only problem is they don't control anything, you just ask the paper and bring it to the store, but at least the city knows you have fish in your home and can get data about the amount of fish fans there. Also it's illegal to put fish as gift at fairs when it was traditional here. We can't have wild animals in circus anymore (since 2014, so no more lion, tiger, elephant, just horses). Also we can't have hedgehogs. They also increased the skills of the stores, now they display the origin of the fish and the temperature of the water, last time I bought a cold water fish and a warm water one and the seller asked me if I knew what I was doing (I have 2 tanks), the main problem is the price, it's super expensive, 2.8€ per Guppy (cheapest fish of the stores), and about 15€ for each tiny plant.
Tyranny of government controlling access to Nature is demonic. It is in fundamental conflict with God.
@@FatherFish The problem is we are too many in a small territory, without control there will be no more nature, butterflies vanished in the last 10 years here, bees are getting very rare, even snails and slugs are getting rare in gardens, our local fish are strong because we have massive wastewater treatment plants, but there are no more bugs crashing on our cars at night, they are gone, nature can adapt but this is going too fast, I see the collapse, common species are getting extremly rare and young people don't understand what we lost, most people don't even think fish feel pain and most of them even think they aren't meat, they think fish are decoration, that's why they needed this law or people started to think gold fish lived a few weeks... We need a fatherfish here 😟
Hi father Fish, I adopted your way of setting up my fish tank, and I've had it about 3 months maybe 4. Its going great, fish explore the environment, they hide, they feed from the leaves and roots. I love it. I only lost one fish , I had it probably 6 months from a previous tank with all the fake accessories. Maybe I overfed, but all the rest are alive and well. I have not ever tested the water, Its a smaller tank, so I usually change 20-50% of the water weekly. Depends on how dirty. I have a sponge filter which I have used them before I prefer them. Its raining today, hoping to collect some outside predator's to add to the tank, a Resurrections jar. I have all Neon types except 1 female Koi Betta, I would like to get a Alien female Betta, but so far have only seen males. I have 1 ground feeder , I don't remember what he is called, but he will stay on the 1 inch size. He's doing a good job. I was able to get a drift wood at PetSmart with a plant tied on it for 7.00 and already in fish water. Perfect, I love it. So thank you, Ill keep watching your channel. God Bless, bye for now , Barb
You are doing great Barb, probably do not need to change the water so much, watch your fish and they will tell you when you should change the water.
Great video FF.
my enemy of fish tank keeping is my back pain tho
Sir, really u r an excellent senior fish keeper
I have seen so many people who keep doing water changes every week, then complain there fish are dying, I haven't changed my water its been 3 months and fish are thriving im following your advice and its worked, one question i would like to know is how often to clean the filter, mine is still going strong so not done it yet.thank you for your videos I follow them alot.❤
clean thefilter when it becomes too clogged to work
Thank you its fine at the moment ❤
This is exactly what I do... so exhausting and lots of dissapointment... the knowledge of having a planted natural tank is not existed in the aquarium pet store.
To mi się zaczyna podobać ,szukałem takiego akwarium bo to dość czyste u mnie dawało mi zmartwień a nie radość
Biotope tanks are all the rage now. Seems you've been doing them for decades! 😊
Thank you father fish
Thank you Holy Father and keep doing what you`re doing .😍
FF was a bit heated in this one. Get some, FF!!
Less is best! Keep ur hands out of the tanks!
I got a clean aquarium and it thrive. On my big aquarium I have a refigium I don't clean, and on my nano tank i have my filter that I never clean
Does FatherFish eat fish?
YES!
This guy speaks fish
While I dont have big fish tank, just a small 5 gallon with a betta and a nerite snail, your videos made me feel alot better about it. There is so much information out there, alot of it very conflicting advice. As a new fish mom, are there good resources out there for betta keeping?
I am no expert on keeping Bettas. I went by what father fish recommended. I picked up a betta mid December 2023. I put it in a 5 gallon tank with a half inch of soil and one and a half inches of sand. Next I added lots of plants. Finally a heater set at 80 Fahrenheit. I feed Northfins Betta food,Fluval Betta pellets and finally small pieces of Australian Black Worms. I only top up the water, never do I perform a full water exchange. My fish is in excellent condition. Constantly building his bubble nest and touring his little kingdom.
Father Fish, is there such thing as overstocking a tank? and if there is, is there a way to make it so more fish can be added? I have lots of space in my 15 gallon tank, and my fish are fully grown, it is heavily planted, but the one inch per gallon rule had me questioning.
The one inch per gallon is completely meaningless. If you have a healthy tank with plants and a rich subtrate the ration should be close to 10 1" fish per gallon.
Broadly agree, the mulm and substrate must not be sterile. However Ich can be successfully treated with commercially available products - one of the few diseases the off the shelf bottles will actually work effectively on, and prevented with UV water treatment. Most fish do not die of Ich itself, other diseases that take advantage of the weakened fish, think of a human who is immuno-compromised dying of pneumonia after being successfully treated for heart disease.
Ick infestation is deadly. 87f stops it.
@@FatherFish Indeed Father Fish, though I have only used higher temperatures to accelerate the parasite's cycle, to hit it with UV when off the fish, but 87, is a very high temperature for many fish, many barbs would be distressed, and would require a lot of oxygenation to prevent fish loss. Kindest regards.
My question is, would that help with keeping up with Discus fish. I’ve always heard all over the internet that Discus live in prestine water.
I have Discus in my natural aquarium.
Also, another thing I want to add is the tank you’re describing that is more ideal is also more ideal for bottom feeders like otocinclus. I spent money on buying those stupid algae wafers and it did nothing! He only wants to eat what’s on the leaves and tank walls. When you let nature happen, your fish will be so happy! I think the other reason I am able to break the rules about putting bettas (both male and female) in one tank is because I created a natural ecosystem in my 40 gallon tank. They all coexist peacefully, and I love watching them foraging for food. It’s much more interesting to watch rather than what it’s like when the tank is sterile!
That’s awesome, my tadpoles also like to naw on the bottom and leaves, you could also just leave the algae waiters on the bottom or crumble them up and leave them on the bottom
Please bring back the old intro!
@FatherFish Father
If it is constantly illuminated with lamps, the walls of the aquarium will be mossy.
And the moss on the walls of such an aquarium should be cleaned or left?
How to clean it?
Just scrape the algae/moss off the walls of the aquarium and clean it out if you do not want it there.
There is nothing ugly about natural things in a natural enviroment. Its what creates the very best enviroment for the fish, and whatever other life comes along with it. That, is whats most important, and is why people end up getting frustrated and give up. Theyre missing the point and are allowing their need for a spotless tank to prevail. It never works in the long run. Theres only so far life can go doing it this way.
Love your videos 😊
Thank you!!
Father fish I bought a 20 gallon long tank
Hello father fish!! I got a question. I want to have a natural aquarium and put a mud/soil and top it with sand. But, i have a Bag of unused aquasoil. Can i use aquasoil for my natural planted aquarium? Or ignore it and go grab some river soil/mud?
Follow the formula in the SHOAL. Both are part of the mix.
Reassuring me an inch of mulm and green walls is good
hallo father, how about reef tank?
coming up. We are planning a 130.
How to keep a set up for gold fish?
Just the same
@@FatherFish Thank you sir... But gold fish is biting plants.... Please suggest some plants for that
The people that complain about the FF method have killed more fish in the past month than FF has killed in his entire career.
Ihave a fish tank and me too was picking outside thing's. but I was aboilling every thing because people said to me you will kill your fish if you don't do that! And i was conviced. But i listen to you and I said ok, ok i will lisen the old man.. Im sure he know what he is doing ,but I was afraid 😆.Today I picked water..Dirty water 😅 about a cup because im a chicken 🤣 and i put it in my thank crossed my finger and hope that nothing dies lol.if I tell you that my fish now starting to behave normaly like doing normaly in the wild and that only made an hour would you beleve me?!!😮I was having not bad but somme agression on regular bases and often...Man! let's put dirt!!!!🤣👌👍
lol You GO!
Better for the natural tank to be clear than "cleaned"
I really like these videos and I think this man has a wealth of knowledge to share and it’s fantastic, but I have to watch them at 2x speed as he just talks to slow for my ears.
i no you like your Natural tanks but some of us do not i have got some Plants in my Main tank to of my Tanks have not got Plants in them and im not going to be Putting plants in them i Find if you Put a lot of Plants in your Tank you can not see your Fish and im new to this Hobby but you are happy doing What you are doing so im happy for you and i am a Christian also
fish like plants to hide from your eyes.
@@FatherFish you have to see them they they are God Creatures so they have to be seeing 😅
@@Aqu181what. Fish like to hide in the wild, in the wild the fish have to hide from predators without place to hide they can get stressed, you can just get floating plants too that don’t block out the view or small ones
You just inspired me to make a Gothic fish tank i’m gonna fill up with Blackmore and death decay of course plants they’ll be alive, but I find plants with creepy names, Crips Use black, blasting sand
Would look neat with "skeletal"-looking fish.
There are truly more than one way to skin a cat. Clean tank with proper filtration, plenums, deep bed. Even no filter tanks have survived the test of time. Just depends on what you want to achieve and ease of maintenance. By far the easiest one I have done is plenums followed closely by deep bed heavily planted tanks and third being bcb baskets in a sump with a fairly clean environment besides algae growing on rocks from high light for Africans. Basically, if it works, don’t change it.
If just starting out, deep sand beds are the easiest to get going by far. But, plenums are the longest lasting tanks in my personal experience if you are willing to be patient and get the flow right for denitrifying bacteria to thrive.
It is not the plenum itself that is the key to success. It is simply a deep dirted substrate.
@@FatherFish correct since it is pretty much implied to have a deep sand or kitty litter bed with a plenum. Kind of have to have it be fairly deep to get those healthy anoxic conditions. Kind of work hand and hand to facilitate the minimum flow. Took me quite a while to get the flow just right to promote denitrifying bacteria but I also think it may just take longer to colonize then typical nitrifying bacterias. Kind of like bcb baskets. Don’t see much happening and have to control levels with water changes and then 6 months it all levels out. Pretty cool stuff
How do I change my fish tank that have fish in them now to this system?
add sand to the substrate
Father Fish Please help me!!!!!!❤️ I have drain flies in my aquarium, I don't think they are harmful, but I don't know how to solve this problem or if Its even necessary. Please make a video about it or let me know what I should do?
betta will eat them
Are worms ok father fish, I've set up a small tank for my guppies soil sand ect and exchanged some moss balls from my main community tank to the guppy tank and I've noticed white worms, apparently the worms are caused by food or dead plants what should I do ?
Do nothing. Detritus worms are beneficial.
I was just told that my ff tank is dirty and not to give bad advise on how to keep your aquarium cristal clear. And all this fish waste on the bottom is autragious 😂. Because I didn't change water in 4months, my tank must be filthy
My tank would say is 80% planted.
Tried to explain but in vain. Some people just won't believe in natural tanks that are best to keep fish, this is their natural environment .
But no no,been told you give bad advice, how come,my water is clear,no deaths in all time since its been started.Like FF said fish are being slaughtered everyday and this is so true, just because some ppl are ignorant
Father fish, is it normal for my aquarium to smell stinky a little? The fish seems fine and happy should I change my water a little and clean the tank? Another question is that I have a bully rice fish, he keeps targeting his rice fish friend. I have 6 white cloud mountain minnows and 4 rice fish.
There should be no odor. Stop feeding for a week. Seee if that makes a difference.
@@FatherFish What about the bullying?
@@FatherFish what about the aggressive fish behavior?
@@roboticm0use521I wouldn’t put aggressive fish together, I do have 3 bluegill one is dominant and sometimes bullies the other but it’s no real problem, I mean is the rice fish super aggressive?
@@Breydwildlifeit’s just this one fish that keeps bullying this fish the other 2 doesn’t
👍👍👍!!!!
Has this video been sped up?
An FF fan here :)
a bit. yes. A few ardent fans caught it
@@FatherFish The truth is, I enjoy me some Classic Father Fish. Let others manually speed things up via UA-cam video settings. Hehe Cheers to FF!
Sir green hair algea in bucket this good or bad all plants cover it
Green hair algae is cool and beneficial, as long is it’s not Cyanobacteria or the toxic one
u can get one flying fox fish and the algae will soon gone
I’m still working on getting my ammonia levels straightened out
Ignore it. Add more plants. They eat ammonia
@@FatherFishexactly, I like how you made so many videos addressing this issue, yet people don’t listen, this video was literally about how the natural tanks filter themselves.
put dirt soil + sand + plants, and don't do water change and in 1-2 months of time, the ammonia issue will gone forever. During the 1st two months, the tank might look messy. Don't worry, trust the nature and everything will be ok. The water will become crystal clear.
Ugly is beautiful 😊👍🐳🐬🐠
Lou this is Jimmy you probably aren't going to see this but I'm going to reach out to you and call you this week
looking for you Jimmy
I put garlic in my tank
Ive never had better, more stable parameters by doing basically nothing. Snails do the cleaning. Aquarium seems to be its own entity.
🌿🐟🌿
Why my guppy is gasping in top of water even having many natural plants
need moore information. Come to the SHOAL
Please don't edit FFs speech. I understand that UA-cam demands constant attention, but it's honestly harder to focus on the content when it's sped up. The slow speed helps people understand all the information that is being said. It's also distracting when you're used to hearing him speak normally, and you can tell it's unnatural and sped up.
What’s going on?
@@Breydwildlife I think the editors are removing gaps (silences) in the audio to speed up the delivery of information. It makes his speech sound sped up, and unnatural. We're here because we love all that is NATURAL.
