  • The secret to a healthy, balanced aquarium is to duplicate, as much as possible, a natural environment. Father Fish explains the danger of creating an environment for fish that is sterile. Sterile environments are susceptible to severe infestation by dangerous pathogens. We see worse problems with pathogens in fish tanks than exist in nature. This is caused by failing to create genuinely balanced systems in which pathogens are kept in check.
    Do not be afraid of natural aquariums but welcome them as the safest and healthiest possible method for keeping your precious fish.

    I stumbled upon your channel about a year ago and realized that everything you say truly does make sense. The more we can make the tanks close to nature the better.
    The greatest achievement I thought I could get would be to have the fish breed in the tank, which never happened before. Now I have 4 generations Mollys in my tank, even 2 generations of Amano Shrimp in the same tank. And the best part is I don't even have to do anything anymore. No more cleaning, no more feeding, no more water changes, no more worries, no more stress. It all takes care of itself.
    You truly are the Father of Fish Keeping. Thank you so much for all the help and great advice that you give us.

You know what I do to my tanks during a power outage? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. And everyone is fine.

    My tank is yellowish, no filter besides the plants filtering it, i try to replicate natural environments from where these fish came from, sadly some fishes aren’t used to natural environments nowadays

    I was new to fish keeping in January this year. I was making the mistakes of cleaning my tank to a point it became obsessive. I was even testing the water parameters three times a day!! I found your channel, and changed my substrate to dirt and sand, bought some plants, and I finally stopped being obsessive with water changes and checking the water. I simply watch their behavior and my plants. It’s only when I started doing this that my fish grew bigger, my plants started to thrive so much that I have to keep trimming them back! I have Java ferns spawning babies so fast when UA-camrs say it takes 6 months. I don’t understand why it takes them 6 months when every week, I see new babies on my Java fern leaves. I stopped using chemicals, and I let my otocinclus take care of algae (he does a good job and I think I’ll give him a raise for his hard work😂)

    Excellent !. I do not and can not understand why the sterile tank promoters can not grasp this method. I was once in the sterile tank brigade, always had sick fish and dying plants. 12 months back I stopped the water changing, the substrate cleaning, and all the other that went along with it. I have now got a tank which cleans its self , no more sick fish and the tank don't smell when you lift the lid. I just let nature run my tank now and go along with what it wants to do, I found out this from your video's FF. I Thank You so much

    My tanks have always neem a little funky.. So many of my buddies poke fun at them but I've had the same fish for years and years. There's no plastic plants, fake gravel and I only have a bio-wheel and powerhead to move water in each one. I always thought it was odd to bring nature into the house, in the form of an aquarium, and then proceed to keep it as sterile as possible. Love your channel and your set ups.

    In Belgium we now have to ask permission to the municipal office to buy any fish since 2023. If you don't have the paper you can't buy fish. Also it's illegal to take anything in the rivers, even stones or branches in the forest. Gold fish and Guppies are considered as domestical animals, so when you don't treat them correctly it's legaly as bad as bad treatment on a dog or a cat. The only problem is they don't control anything, you just ask the paper and bring it to the store, but at least the city knows you have fish in your home and can get data about the amount of fish fans there. Also it's illegal to put fish as gift at fairs when it was traditional here. We can't have wild animals in circus anymore (since 2014, so no more lion, tiger, elephant, just horses). Also we can't have hedgehogs. They also increased the skills of the stores, now they display the origin of the fish and the temperature of the water, last time I bought a cold water fish and a warm water one and the seller asked me if I knew what I was doing (I have 2 tanks), the main problem is the price, it's super expensive, 2.8€ per Guppy (cheapest fish of the stores), and about 15€ for each tiny plant.

      @@FatherFish The problem is we are too many in a small territory, without control there will be no more nature, butterflies vanished in the last 10 years here, bees are getting very rare, even snails and slugs are getting rare in gardens, our local fish are strong because we have massive wastewater treatment plants, but there are no more bugs crashing on our cars at night, they are gone, nature can adapt but this is going too fast, I see the collapse, common species are getting extremly rare and young people don't understand what we lost, most people don't even think fish feel pain and most of them even think they aren't meat, they think fish are decoration, that's why they needed this law or people started to think gold fish lived a few weeks... We need a fatherfish here 😟

    Hi father Fish, I adopted your way of setting up my fish tank, and I've had it about 3 months maybe 4. Its going great, fish explore the environment, they hide, they feed from the leaves and roots. I love it. I only lost one fish , I had it probably 6 months from a previous tank with all the fake accessories. Maybe I overfed, but all the rest are alive and well. I have not ever tested the water, Its a smaller tank, so I usually change 20-50% of the water weekly. Depends on how dirty. I have a sponge filter which I have used them before I prefer them. Its raining today, hoping to collect some outside predator's to add to the tank, a Resurrections jar. I have all Neon types except 1 female Koi Betta, I would like to get a Alien female Betta, but so far have only seen males. I have 1 ground feeder , I don't remember what he is called, but he will stay on the 1 inch size. He's doing a good job. I was able to get a drift wood at PetSmart with a plant tied on it for 7.00 and already in fish water. Perfect, I love it. So thank you, Ill keep watching your channel. God Bless, bye for now , Barb

      I am no expert on keeping Bettas. I went by what father fish recommended. I picked up a betta mid December 2023. I put it in a 5 gallon tank with a half inch of soil and one and a half inches of sand. Next I added lots of plants. Finally a heater set at 80 Fahrenheit. I feed Northfins Betta food,Fluval Betta pellets and finally small pieces of Australian Black Worms. I only top up the water,never do I perform a full water exchange. My fish is in excellent condition. Constantly building his bubble nest and touring his little kingdom.

    Father Fish, is there such thing as overstocking a tank? and if there is, is there a way to make it so more fish can be added? I have lots of space in my 15 gallon tank, and my fish are fully grown, it is heavily planted, but the one inch per gallon rule had me questioning.

    • @FatherFish
      @FatherFish  4 місяці тому

      The one inch per gallon is completely meaningless. If you have a healthy tank with plants and a rich subtrate the ration should be close to 10 1" fish per gallon.

    Broadly agree, the mulm and substrate must not be sterile. However Ich can be successfully treated with commercially available products - one of the few diseases the off the shelf bottles will actually work effectively on, and prevented with UV water treatment. Most fish do not die of Ich itself, other diseases that take advantage of the weakened fish, think of a human who is immuno-compromised dying of pneumonia after being successfully treated for heart disease.

      @@FatherFish Indeed Father Fish, though I have only used higher temperatures to accelerate the parasite's cycle, to hit it with UV when off the fish, but 87, is a very high temperature for many fish, many barbs would be distressed, and would require a lot of oxygenation to prevent fish loss. Kindest regards.

    Also, another thing I want to add is the tank you’re describing that is more ideal is also more ideal for bottom feeders like otocinclus. I spent money on buying those stupid algae wafers and it did nothing! He only wants to eat what’s on the leaves and tank walls. When you let nature happen, your fish will be so happy! I think the other reason I am able to break the rules about putting bettas (both male and female) in one tank is because I created a natural ecosystem in my 40 gallon tank. They all coexist peacefully, and I love watching them foraging for food. It’s much more interesting to watch rather than what it’s like when the tank is sterile!

    There is nothing ugly about natural things in a natural enviroment. Its what creates the very best enviroment for the fish, and whatever other life comes along with it. That, is whats most important, and is why people end up getting frustrated and give up. Theyre missing the point and are allowing their need for a spotless tank to prevail. It never works in the long run. Theres only so far life can go doing it this way.

    There are truly more than one way to skin a cat. Clean tank with proper filtration, plenums, deep bed. Even no filter tanks have survived the test of time. Just depends on what you want to achieve and ease of maintenance. By far the easiest one I have done is plenums followed closely by deep bed heavily planted tanks and third being bcb baskets in a sump with a fairly clean environment besides algae growing on rocks from high light for Africans. Basically, if it works, don’t change it.
    If just starting out, deep sand beds are the easiest to get going by far. But, plenums are the longest lasting tanks in my personal experience if you are willing to be patient and get the flow right for denitrifying bacteria to thrive.

    • @FatherFish
      @FatherFish  5 місяців тому +1

      It is not the plenum itself that is the key to success. It is simply a deep dirted substrate.

    • @al44tec
      @al44tec 5 місяців тому

      @@FatherFish correct since it is pretty much implied to have a deep sand or kitty litter bed with a plenum. Kind of have to have it be fairly deep to get those healthy anoxic conditions. Kind of work hand and hand to facilitate the minimum flow. Took me quite a while to get the flow just right to promote denitrifying bacteria but I also think it may just take longer to colonize then typical nitrifying bacterias. Kind of like bcb baskets. Don’t see much happening and have to control levels with water changes and then 6 months it all levels out. Pretty cool stuff
