- One of the first stops in the fall that we wanted to make was to pay a visit to Sean and Sasha from Edible Acres. Together, they have created a vibrant, bursting-at-the-garden seams plant community on their 1/2 acre plot-equipped with chicken compost run, (which will be subject for a follow-up video).

To get rid of an underground wasp nest when I was a kid, my father hung a piece of fish over a 5 gallon bucket of water filled about half way. The wasps ate so much fish they couldn't fly and fell in the bucket and drowned. No pesticides and it was cleared out in a day.
That sounds like something a cartoon character would do to catch their enemy 😂😂😂❤
I can see them thirty years from now toodling around in the garden. And him reminding her she has bread in the oven . They are cute and their garden is beautiful.
The bread thing was an excuse for her to leave for whatever reason. Otherwise she would have came back lol

Sean's UA-cam channel was my introduction to permaculture about 5 years ago when I was living in an apartment. I now have 30 chickens and am trying to start a small nursery on my own 1/2 acre. It's great to see him and Sasha getting some more exposure.
I have so much respect for edible acres and the way that Sean supports Sasha, the plants, and animals. Even in the beginning when asked who does most of the gardening Sean turned it into an opportunity to support Sasha, as even though she is on camera less her impact on the garden is still very valuable and Sean does not hesitate to share about her great skills in the garden. He speaks with a genuine, calm, deep compassion for all beings he speaks about. And that is rare and truly admirable especially in the times we live in today. I hope their channel continues to grow.

Yeah I love seeing this, especially because I know Sasha personally and I feel like the idea of being on camera is definitely not her cup of tea, but she deserves credit for how much care she puts into her homestead and her life in general.
Exactly, I hope more "Modern Independent Women" Would see this and how they need a man in a relationship and that they need to be submissive and let the man lead.

Yeah, we humans should learn to share food with other animals instead of just viewing them as pests or threats, to co-exist with the animal kingdom, even insects, bec they too have their natural uses in this biodiversity. Actually, it is man who take too much land, space and territory away from animals. Kudos to this man for respecting and acknowledging the uses and roles of other creatures around him.
where i live, we have a date palm growing in our backyard and we let the birds eat them because we can always buy high-quality dates from the store and they also are able to keep their population alive.
Loving this tour through this garden, what happen to the bread making owner?
That's easy to say when you're not trying to feed your children with that food. Deer have made it with out my garden for 100's of years so I don't feel bad putting a fence up.
@@coagulatedsalts4711 do the dates you buy from the store come without packing and within a couple of miles of where you live?
I co-exist with the wild boar in my forest. They eat some of my grass, bulbs etc on my land. I’m happy for them to do it even though locally the farmers hate them. I then allow the hunters in my forest, they kill them and I get 40kg of meat every year. It works well for everyone.
It is a joy to see people respectfully using the land for their livelihood. Always learning how to live with nature. I’m so impressed!
I am so delighted to be at school like these that is practical.
Sean and Sasha are my favorite UA-cam channel - hands down. They are the reason I started keeping chickens last year, the reason I became interested in fermented foods, and the encouragement to fearlessly just try something. Their open, gentle, humorous videos were my lifeline in the middle of 2020 madness.
THIS year I am following suit and transitioning all lawn to food forest.

You are so right. When I am having trouble sleeping, I start an edible acres playlist, and his lovely calm voice lulls me to sleep. The bonus is that I then get a subconscious permaculture education while I sleep!!

Edilbe Acres is one of my favourite UA-camrs. They always find ways to make permaculture more accessible and explain everything so well.

I found them because I was looking for more New York-based UA-cam channels doing nature-based work that I wanted to learn about. I stayed for the content, the knowledge, and for being one of the most chill channels I've ever encountered. I swear every video seems to be both a journey as much as an education. Seeing their land featured on another channel in a way I never get to experience their land is wildly entertaining-- and equally as soothing!
Sean's mellow and positive attitude is always so inspiring to me.
He seems like a bit of a prick tbh.
Lovely to see Edible Acres getting this sort of exposure. They really deserve it. Incredibly intuitive and proactive couple, couldn't be happier.
Anyone who interviews Sean and has enough plant knowledge to name off many of the diversity in his gardens earns my Sub in a second! This was a really nice tour. I enjoyed seeing Sean from this perspective (interviewing him, camera walking around his property)... it gave a neat new view of his place. I can't wait to check out more of what you are doing on your channel also Summer :) If you are ever up in Ontario, we'd love to have you here at our place.

Love that he talks about letting the wood chips age for a year! I added fresh wood chips on my garden 2 years ago and definitely regretted it. My plants acted exactly as he said - tomatoes sitting there for months and just barely growing. I was going crazy trying to blame anything other than the wood chips that I had heard so many good things about lol. Don’t get me wrong, great to use - just have to use them properly!
His UA-cam channel is great btw. This was a great video. I've been following edible acres for quite some time now, but I've never seen an overview of the whole property in full bloom like this. Makes me really excited for summer!
I love gardens like this. I do mosaics and I feel like this way of gardening is like making a mosaic little pieces into a big picture.

Your video had such a calming, such a serene effect! I live in a semi-desert area, in Karachi, Pakistan. Trying to grow some vegetable on a concrete rooftop, a little tough, but will try and make the place as dense as this, if possible.
I have lived in Boston, Mass and had visited the finger lakes area once as well, so I know the climate a little bit and I could relate.

30:34 Another nice trick with nettles is that if you look really closely the needles tend to point upwards slightly. So when handling the plant if you start low and kind of grab in an upwards motion, you will actually flatten the needles/hairs up against the stem and they won't sting you. I'm not sure if I'd ever eat them raw like Sean did though! LOL he's more adventurous than I am. I'd rather cook them to kill the needles first.

I'm fascinated by permaculture. I love that this is only 1/2 an acre and so filled with abundance.
I love imagining the diversity of biota in this soil 😍 seeing so many familiar plant "faces" here that I seeded into my meadow!
I live in Houston and have a variety of malibar spinach that essentially took over my flowerbeds, grew over my holly bush, reached my front doorstep, and even survived the 6-20 degrees(snow/ice) we had for a week.

Thank you for this great walk about and informational tour of their nursery. I've been a subscriber of Sean and Sasha for two years plus and have a few of their plants. This is perfect timing I found this older video- so inspiring for my woodland garden planning this year- you have helped me develop an overall plan for how to beautify our acres.

23:55 The birds up here (Between Toronto/Ottawa) also don't really eat the seabuckthorn. It's a truly wonderful plant, just make sure to get a named variety with small thorns. The wild versions can have 3 inch long thorns, which themselves have thorns. It's like the worst parts of thorny honey-locust. However there are so many wonderful varieties like Chuksaya, Hergo, etc which have very small thorns. This way if they run by rhizome you can dig them up and not impale yourself on accident.
The berries will often last right into February, completely untouched by wildlife. The ideal picking time is sometime between Aug-Nov, afterwhich point they start getting quite bitter. They are still good (medicinally) but will be very much an "aquired taste". They taste like medicine because they are. However if taken in peak ripeness, and also if mixed with other fruit, they are a FANTASTIC flavour. These in a nice tea, just sitting in it are amazing. The leaves can also be made into tea. But the berries can almost be like Chinese Dried-Goji tea. Think of it almost like a bubble tea where you drink the berry-infused tea and then eat the tea-infused berries at the end. Such a fantastic fruit.
It's very engaging to chat with someone that has the same passion. Their love of plants and all things related really show in this video. Will definitely check out their channel. 😊

I think she agreed to be off camera. He sounds like he is botanist but if you guys watch his older video he has been doing this stuff for years. Who knows he maybe did went to school and study scientific plants.

It's amazing to see the huge variety on only 1/2 acre.
I have rented here in Georgia 17 years. All of a sudden my landlord wants to sell. Eke! But maybe if if I plant enough, nobody will want to.buy. Mischievous but it might work to keep me living here. At age 78 I am terrified at the idea of being put in an old folks home.
So I guess I will get busy this winter.
Your perennial plantings are a good idea. I will adopt that idea.

Great tour, thank you! Love how wild their garden is. So fun to see the borage. I grew some this year having never seen it before and just loved the flowers. Used some of the leaves to make a syrup which went into a great gin cocktail :)

you can use the nettles to make nettle tincture to keep on you and the next time you get stung you can take a couple droppers of nettle tincture. great as an anti-histamine for allergies, bites and stings. really easy to make

I really love the tour of a smaller property like this. We're hoping to move to a homestead-type property in 5-10 years, and it's great to know how much you can do on just a 1/2 acre of land.
I can attest that it’s amazing what you can do on a fraction of an acre. 1/3 of an acre and a house and driveway taking up a big chunk of it, and yet countless species now.
