As a tour veteran who was blessed enough to have seen the Grateful Dead over 300 times going all the way back to 1969, I remember vividly how the band entered a special zone starting in Spring 1989 that went through till 1991. What a time to be a Deadhead. This version of LOSER is totally sublime!
Agreed! Thank god I was seeing them during this period. I always feel a bit melancholy when trying to convey what the experience was like. Words often, if not always, fail. It was so beautiful, rocking, frightening, delicate, earth shattering, and so much more! I only saw them about 50 times, but the lions share was between 87-91 so I caught my share of epic shows. God bless the Grateful Dead!

Excellent recommendations my good friend. Thank you. This is a monumental day for me. I was only awoken to the real brilliance of the late 80s Era a few hours ago. I don't think I can ever go back. Holy Shit.
Jeff Felderman - well said, the shows after Jerry’s coma up through 91 were special. So much energy, and you can clearly see how much fun these guys were having when you get close-up videos like this. I was lucky enough to be “front row” in Greensboro this Spring, and for Foxboro to start the Summer Tour, and man the interactions between band mates and with the fans was super fun. Those three shows were the only time I ever got that close to the band and I can still see it in my mind like it was yesterday. Infectious fun energy I tell ya’. EDIT: And don’t sleep on 88... fewer long jams, but the rock & roll aspect was full force, and strangely Jerry played Morning Dew all the time in 87-88... one of my favorite versions came from an overlooked gem of a show: 3-30-88, New Jersey. Check it out!
This by far is the Greatest loser of all time, and I have heard them all from 78 till. 95, who else agrees!!! And that little smirk garcia gives , when he knows a little something we will ever know!!! Lesley was right in a way they were bigger than the Beatles!!!
Hot show for a hot day... I was lucky enough to catch 4 of the first 5 shows this summer - Foxboro, JFK, and the 2 Giants Stadium shows. 89 was such a great year, Jerry was healthy and the boys were energetic and on point just about every night. Dark Star and all the other bust-outs in the Fall, just amazing! I never get tired of this era...
Yes I Jah Herb Jah love Jah Jerry Jah rastafari praises blessings respectfully Tucson Arizona Sonoran desert 🏜️ Jah sisters Jah Trey Jah Duane Africa Ethiopia Addis Ababa Selassie I Jah Creation herbalist spiritual awakening chant down Babylon Jah San Rafael Marin county San Francisco California Roots
the close harmony singing in this song, on top of the playing, the intonation and dynamics...all the way through! Image engineering this, you would be like, "I can't believe this is happening", every piece of playback. this recording is like, this was an era, yes, definitely, this was an era
Wow... this kicks ass!!!! Jerry just blows it up during his solo. I love this song to begin with, but this is one of the best versions I have ever heard/seen. I have listened to a lot of versions and I can't think of one I like better.
You can look the wide world over but you will never find another honest man. We are all a bunch of human beings making wonderful sounds and words and pictures and we don't know much but that it will come out right. :) Love, Love, Love each other little children.
Man something about this song after 1 st hearing it many years ago and still through the years . Feels like my life's role more and more.. even though its called loser its given inspiration to me
Look at the size of the crowd...The guitar solo by Jerry is unmatched to say the least. No computer help just pure talent. The millinials have no clue to what good pure music talent is.
I just found my next Jerry classic solos transcription project. Just geting wrapped up with his Thrill is gone solo from Garcia Grisman shows. Every Garcia solo is such a master class when you break it down.
Missing that magic !!!! Does anyone remember that after this show, JFK Stadium was condemed ? There was no better band to do it in... GOD BLESS THE GRATEFUL DEAD!!!!
I was there that day. It was the last performance at JFK stadium, as the concrete was literally crumbling on the underside of the stadium during this show. Thanks Phil... you broke the place... :)
This was my first show. I consider that fact to be one of the great blessings life has bestowed on me. I don't take that for granted at all. I was about 200 feet back Brentside. I vividly remember how it felt during that second set when the sun went down and the screens came on.
IWT. We lived in S. Jersey at the time. (As a forever & again Cleveland guy, it was great to see shows in NY at the time, also) Seems we literally "brought the place down" Crimson, White and Indigo. Peace out
I think it should be noted, especially during this version, that Jerry knows the lyrics and the solo's above and beyond. It's simply amazing how well this man knew his craft. I would rank this 7/7/89 show along with 7/8/78 as the top 2 of all time. One of those Phil "Keep on growin'" would be third. Oh yes, also, Mickey Hart in the background. Always hilarious
What an unreal version of Loser this was. I drank the green kool aid that was being passed around in the center about the 18th-20th rows. Anyone else drink that brew? It was dosed man, unbelievable day/night!!!!!!!
Yes, it was dosed. ANY thing that is being "passed" at the concerts is more than likely, "dosed". AbsoLUTEly, there is a chance of it not being dosed! AbsoLUTELY, there's a chance! As much of a chance as my mom coming down from heaven and buying me the coat I wanted in high school, on SALE for $389> and when talking to the girl who lived across the street, she said her mother wouldn't buy her the coat she wanted, either, and it cost $700. I hope you had a really good time!! and enjoyed yourself, completely! ;^')
***** WHO claims there's no power in prayer? Mr. Weed, you sound like a righteous dude. I must say, your kindness set me back a few steps, and unfortunately, I must say, " no" , Mr, Weed, but I sure do Thank you!! Please make sure the check is certified. ;^'). Wow!
Damn Bobby is one good looking dude in those short. #Rrrrrowww! I always felt like the shorts were such a source of comic relief taken in context with the whole spectacle.
Saw this show...last show ever at JFK...they found cracks in its foundation before the show, but let the show go on. After the concert they roped it off, demolished it soon after. I thought the boys were gonna demolish it that night!
My buddy told me, I'll meet you by the "Rocky" statue, I'll be the guy with long hair and a tye-dye shirt. No lie, I went to the statue, and turned around and there he was. I stopped questioning what was guiding my life.
this show....this tour....totally off the hook..dont get much better than this year....89 was so fine....there was no chance of losin this time...peace and jerry on!!!

Glad you were able to catch their last great years.

I saw them a lot during this time. This is a superior version of the song. Tears.
This by far is the Greatest loser of all time, and I have heard them all from 78 till. 95, who else agrees!!! And that little smirk garcia gives , when he knows a little something we will ever know!!! Lesley was right in a way they were bigger than the Beatles!!!

This is the song of my life. My 2 year old loves it and she can sing most of it.
I want this played at my funeral.
So true brother
I can pay you back with 1 good hand.
Well said brother!
Listening to this makes me miss Jerry even more. Love this.
+Danielle Socha you musta read my mind.
Better than him never existing but I feel your loss.
Never got to see Jerry. This is one of my favorite dead tunes. Rockin version. I love the Brent era.
I was at this show. The SOUL of those words with the SOUL of that beautiful man ,Jerry Garcia. I am forever indebted to all of them and their music
Transcendent solo from Garcia. Beautiful singing from Jerry, Bobby and Brent. A live masterpiece.
I absolutely love the sketch of a character we get in the lyrics. It's really haunting. And yeah, 1989 was an amazing year for the boys.
Robert Hunter totally amazing poet RIP
Listen to this once a week.. They sound so good!
He also gives you the sinister grin after letting us know "he knows something that we will never know"
Love the look Brent throws at Jerry at 4:04. Like "holy crap" my man's about to crush this solo.
Mike Kelly and then Jerry delivers in a big way. Wow
Mike Kelly my favorite part, Brent knows he's about to kill it.
i thought the same thing.
Good observation!
He’s also bombed on coke lol
Brent is just rockin'. You can tell he digs this tune.
Jerry kills it ! I know a little something you'll never know ! I love those grins ....
I love the look Jerry & Brent give each other before Garcia goes in for the kill with his solo!
Chills... I was at this, so perhaps I'm biased, but this is my all-time favorite Loser. Tiger's tone is nothing short of sublime.
Yep I was there too. Wish I could travel back to that night. Jerry was on!!!
This has too be one of all time fav Jerry Solos..
Argueably the best version on video - superb!
I can tell the Queen of Diamonds by the way she shines
Im.still lookin..Rick

When Jerry plays tiger it is just magic..........
Some of the best times in my life were the shows from '88 to '92. I had never been so moved.
I was there also, on Phil's side on the floor. Amazing!! They quite literally brought the house down that night.
My most favorite Dead tune.
jerry has unleashed some big solos over the years in this song and this is good as any. awesome! love '89!
Wow... this kicks ass!!!! Jerry just blows it up during his solo. I love this song to begin with, but this is one of the best versions I have ever heard/seen. I have listened to a lot of versions and I can't think of one I like better.
That Brent and Jerry connection around the 4 min mark.. It's like you ready to do this??
Only saw a handful of Loser, however, I was at this show and this Loser blew my mind. . Peace
This is great. Thanks. Great show. I was on the floor on Jer's side...about 25 "rows" back.
Brent set up the mood for Jerry's sweet sounding solo
You can look the wide world over but you will never find another honest man. We are all a bunch of human beings making wonderful sounds and words and pictures and we don't know much but that it will come out right. :) Love, Love, Love each other little children.
Love this song !!
Man something about this song after 1 st hearing it many years ago and still through the years . Feels like my life's role more and more.. even though its called loser its given inspiration to me
I love the smile on JG's face. He was having a very great day!! RIP Jerry😇
That freaking explosion at 5:28! Epic late 80's loser!
so great...love this jam.
Look at the size of the crowd...The guitar solo by Jerry is unmatched to say the least. No computer help just pure talent. The millinials have no clue to what good pure music talent is.

Damn, what a epic fucking year. The synergy between Jerbear and Brent is thru the roof. Shit, the entire band is ON POINT!
see the look from Jerry to Brent and back again ....at the solo height ... omfg.. chills
Un friggin real!! God damnit! Man I miss going to a show!!
Never gets old
I love that trippy guitar sound to open the song
this is the best version of Loser I think I've ever heard, hands down. Jerry opens it way up around 4:06. thanks
Missing that magic !!!! Does anyone remember that after this show, JFK Stadium was condemed ? There was no better band to do it in... GOD BLESS THE GRATEFUL DEAD!!!!
this is one of the best dead shows - love it!
Yes 7 7 89 was epic. Last show at JFK etc etc. I would would 89 up against any year.
Awesome, Jerry has a sound that will never be duplicated.
I was there that day. It was the last performance at JFK stadium, as the concrete was literally crumbling on the underside of the stadium during this show.
Thanks Phil... you broke the place... :)

I believe ol' Phil also had a hand in destroying a big concert hall in Hartford too hahaha
Thanx 4 the memories... not to mention the post...
Where's the FK YES button?
Seriously tho
I think you found it 👍
IWT. We lived in S. Jersey at the time. (As a forever & again Cleveland guy, it was great to see shows in NY at the time, also) Seems we literally "brought the place down" Crimson, White and Indigo. Peace out
Sweet baby Jesus the end of that solo!!!
Seriously !!
Man! Youre right! He hits on the lower register!
I think it should be noted, especially during this version, that Jerry knows the lyrics and the solo's above and beyond. It's simply amazing how well this man knew his craft. one of my favorite shows period. Well done Jerry and Brent.
Dead always rocked my native Philly from what I’ve seen/heard. Wish I had been there!

Hot show! Folks couldn't beat the heat!

I saw them at the Capital Centre during this tour....
Better than their Cornell '77 performance, not as technically perfect, but the energy here is through the roof. Brent raises the stakes.
My favorite gd song
This is the best Loser of that tour.
I wish I could "like" this more than once!
My buddy told me, I'll meet you by the "Rocky" statue, I'll be the guy with long hair and a tye-dye shirt. No lie, I went to the statue, and turned around and there he was. I stopped questioning what was guiding my life.
