I've been a Tolkien nerd for my entire life and that's not an exaggeration. I literally remember my dad reading me and my older brother's the books to go to sleep when I was 6-10 years old because I remember the room we were read them in in our old house. My dad and even my Grandad are also Tolkien nerds as is basically all of my family.
I have read all of his works multiple times and it would be an understatement to say he's my favourite author of all time. Not that I don't love other authors and artists (I love a great deal of others) but it's the one that is perhaps closest to my heart especially as an Englishman since Tolkien is very fundamentally English in a way that I don't think non-English people can even appreciate (no offence).
There are very subtle aspects of English culture that are hard to express to non-English people like our love of "rambling" and how it differs from merely walking in the countryside. Descriptions of it will only tell you that it is walking in country but it's more than that. It's the same with how we appreciate a warm fire in a cozy pub in winter, firm-friends and a good beer, hearty food, a bonfire night with fireworks etc. etc. and i.e. everything "hobbitish".
What I can say as a nigh-fanatic for Tolkien is that this show is a bastardisation far beyond what anyone realises. The layers of culture, principle, morality, character and depth that are subverted and attacked by this show are far beyond what most realise.
As some have pointed out this is just an extension of the outright attack on Western culture but it defiles English culture in a way even it can't properly comprehend. Tolkien may be the greatest avatar of "Englishness" in history because he was trying to explicitly to be such.
If he and his works are the most fundamental expressions of our culture, this cancer is the most fundamental attack upon it.

I am still constantly underestimating how much the lore breaks in this show hurt my soul.
I'm not as much of a Tolkien nerd, but I love the lore and I am an artist and writer myself. If I wrote a series of books, died, and then some TV show was made shredding everything I wrote, I would come back from the dead and bite their necks.

It's why I always say that people who talk about being on the "right side of history" are a giant red flag for immorality. No one who lives by principles, doing right because it is right, worries about their place and what side of history they're on. Only those with skeletons in their closets worry about being on the right side of history.

Perhaps the most fundamental failure of human thinking in every domain is the failure of realising (or accepting when confronted with) the fact that most things are in flux.
The irony of the modern age is that people refuse to accept the things that aren't in flux, and refuse to accept the realities that everything else is.
      What do I mean?
Someone who's spent any amount of time reading history begins to understand that there's a cyclical nature to it and that the "zeitgeist" is ever changing, often generationally, but tends to have key markers of youth, middle age and then old age interacting with the next generation.
There were Westerns, then Sci-fi movies, then Animation took over etc. etc.
But, there is also that which is not in flux and possibly the best example here is biological sex.
It's almost impossible to argue that biological sex has any flux. It has negligible amounts almost always l attributable to genetic mutations which result in infertility.
In the modern age there is no appreciation for the fact that there has been a past, and that it closely mirrors our present in all ways other than the superficial and that "nothing is truly new" in human nature.
However, there is a run away obsession with inventing "newness" through simply asserting anti-reality statements as being fact.
I think this same impulse is what leads to historical revisionism and other such things.
The modern generation doesn't care about the past, they're so arrogant they feel they have nothing to learn from it and yet all they do is live in the corpse of the past whilst attempting to lay claim to it as their own original creation by applying the most superficial skin to it they can.
What they present as new or novel is the repackaged decaying remnants of something from prior generations and they're too ignorant and careless to even realise this.
All the while they make the same mistakes of the past because they refuse to look to it for guidance.
A great quote that will never become irrelevant is that "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” usually credited to George Santayana.
I personally believe the modern generation and western world is the most relevant representatives of this idea our culture has seen in a long time and at the same time they're also the perfect representatives of inferior, ignorant, self deluded creatives passing off their cack handed plagiarism as originality.
Our culture has devolved to the point that the dumb, self-aggrandizing, ignorant fraud is the hero and the earnest, creative, truly learned inventor is the enemy.
Those who look to the past are the enemy of """""""""""""""progress""""""""""""""" in the tiny echoless halls of the brains of our current culture's "luminaries", people who merely "influence" as opposed to creating

@@Ale-xv1un You can write some of it to be not bad, but a big part of it is just rubbish. Jamey ending, Sansa/The North ending, Brann the Broken ending or the Night King ending all things you can just not write to be good and coherent with the world so they need very serious changes.

    • @nymphey
      @nymphey День тому

Some plot points could be executed better, e.g. Sansa's revenge on Littlefinger in s7, however, they should give it more time (Sansa's character was not developed enough to become the next big manipulative player who learned from the likes Cersei, Jeoffrey, Margaery and Littlefinger).
Same goes for Bran becoming the all-knowing ruler. It was hinted at more in the books, but totally underdeveloped.
The Long Night should have lasted a decade, and after finally overcoming it and Dany going mad in the process, they could go back to petty political wars. Maybe Jaime's regression could even be explained, even though that's a tough sell.

    • @IncredibleGoliath
      @IncredibleGoliath День тому +3

@@Ale-xv1un the issue is that the ending doesn't match the first half of the story. ASoIaF depicted the Others as the primary threat from the very first chapter, so trying to pivot to Dany and Cersei at the end was never going to work. The fact that he also set Dany up as a mostly well-meaning heroine with a bad childhood just makes it more unworkable.

The show gave fans an ending, while by not publishing the book ending, the dire hard fans will always believe it would have been better -- even genius. It's also entirely possible that the show wrote the exact ending the George wanted, but it was so hated he can't write that anymore. Now he's stuck without any idea how to end the series.

1:28:25 - The Orcs "growing out of the earth" was an invention by Peter Jackson. It is absolutely non-canon, in fact it breaks the lore of Orcs being created by Melkor from corrupted Elves.
In his own words from the "LOTR Behind the Scenes", Jackson loved the idea of corrupted earth spawning Orcs "just like maggots spawning out of rotting flesh".
In the books Tolkien explains that you had 2 main types of Orcs - smaller ones, used more as hunters and scouts and bigger ones, that were pure warriors. The bigger ones hate the smaller ones and treat them with disdain, calling them "slaves." But, to be fair, they all hate each other.
Both types hate and cannot endure the sun. They cannot stand direct sunlight for long, it drains their energy, makes them miserable, in the words of Uruk Hai who have seen the normal Orcs suffer under direct sunlight - "you weaklings look cooked!"
Btw, even the biggest fighting Orcs are still shorter than men and thus much shorter than elves.
The Uruk Hai are a HYBRID of Orcs and Humans - Tolkien never says it explicitly, but Gandalf talking about Saruman's betrayal hints at it heavily.
They CAN withstand sunlight, it doesn't bother them at all an they are as tall as men.
Since it is explicitly said in the books that Orcs reproduce in the same way as other children of Iluvatar (sexually) one may ask - why was creation or Uruk Hai such a big deal? Since Orcs were literally "raping and pillaging" whenever they could, shouldn't those human women give birth to Uruk Hai?
Well, no - and this is where Saruman's twisted genius comes in. It doesn't take a Human female and an Orc male to make an Uruk Hai, it takes an Orc female and a Human male.
Everything indicates that Saruman had human males (most likely slaves), breed with female Orcs to make an army of thousands of Uruk Hai and was working at it for long years. Gandalf assumed that Saruman may have started this as a way to fight fire with fire, producing his own breed of Orcs in opposition to Sauron, not to be in league with him. But Gandalf suspected that even in this Saruman's mind was already being twisted by Sauron's power and the Uruk Hai breeding program may have been in fact a clever manipulation by Sauron.
BTW in the appendix Tolkien mentioned that Sauron knew how to make Uruk Hai and possibly even found a way to make them even bigger - possibly Troll size as there were "Trolls living in Mordor that were resilient to sunlight", but it seems that either Tolkien couldn't make his mind about it, or simply wanted to leave it a mystery. I still don’t know what to think of Joker 2 yet. On one hand I don’t like the idea of musical elements but it seems that Gaga’s depiction of Harley is going to be a departure from the girl boss cringe of other recent depictions. We know this because her version of the character is basically just a joker fan girl which is more in line with the spirit of the original. Unfortunately it seems like the majority of her scenes were cut thus leaving her as a relatively minor character despite the false promo that would have you think otherwise. As for critics, I don’t trust their reviews at all because they said the acolyte was good. So I guess it’s just a wait and see situation with Joker 2

The reviewers that have taken over the sun times and publish reviews under his name are shills, and deserve no such respect.
For a while I liked MovieBob. He usually had an intelligent take on movies, and he understood what a movie in it's franchise/genre needed to be in order to be good. However, he couldn't keep his politics out of his reviews, and eventually he became more an angry man ranting on youtube , than a respected, quality reviewer.

The “too many plots in a movie” thing isn’t a Beetlejuice thing. Most newer movies, genre ones in particular, suffer from being overstuffed with multiple plots. On the flip side, a lot of “prestige television” suffers from having too little plot. It’s obvious most of those shows started out as a two hour movie but stretched to 10 episodes. It’s as if movie producers and tv showrunners should switch places.

Juaquin Phoenix is a pretty good actor, but his Joker movies have nothing to do with the Joker I know from the Batman comic books. Even Christopher Nolan's abominations are better than these movies. Turning anything into a musical is not a good idea to start with. I can't stand Harley Quinn, not even in the comic books. Having her played by Lady Gagme won't help. Am I the only one who is sick of movies and TV shows about villains that try to make them sympathetic and that try to paint the heroes as the actually bad people? So sick of it.
Beetlejuice is like Highlander in that it was a good movie that did not need a sequel in any way, but it got one anyway.
Rings of Power continues to be a show that I continue to avoid. Videos about it here on UA-cam are all I can stand of it. Even the ones that are positive about it can't convince me that it's worth seeing. Such as travesty.
The 2000's have nothing new. In the future, historians and hipsters will look at the 2000's and say it was just a mishmash of things that came before. It doesn't have a unique signature look, style, sound etc. We are not even halfway through the 2000's and I am confident that it won't develop a recognizable style like the decades of the 1900's had.
I wish that I could prevent Hollywood from ever screwing up Greatest American Hero. I'm surprised/glad that they haven't rebooted/reimagined it yet for modern audiences. I'm sure that they will get around to it eventually because it's such a wonderful idea and it could look so amazing with today's special effects. I am also sure that the writing will be so woke that it'll be unwatchable.
Michael Keaton is a brilliant actor so it's not surprising that he was able to pull off playing Beetlejuice again after all this time. He did a pretty good job of playing Batman again in the Flash movie for that matter. Everyone I know who watched that Flash movie says that the best part of a not very good movie was seeing Keaton playing Batman again.
Rings of Power is just horrible. Almost as bad as The Acolyte. Just when we think Hollywood has reached rock bottom, they dig down some more. The memberberries are probably the only thing people actually like about this show and the writers know it. Won't be long before they have Smaug in there too.
Chris hits the nail on the head at 1:45 for sure. Today's shows have so many things wrong with them, but at the core of it is that they way showrunners write and portray characters today makes them devoid of anything that makes the audience care about them.
Even new video games are not very good anymore. Lifelong Star Wars fan, but Disney has taken care of that in the TV shows, movies and even the new games are bad.
Music and sound effects are incredibly important to me, partly because I had vision problems as a kid and couldn't focus on things very well and saw everything double, but my ears worked very well. If a movie, TV show, game etc has awesome, memorable music it really makes the thing so much better to me than if I try to watch it with the sound turned off. If a show or game has forgettable, generic music it really hurts it.
The regions of Middle Earth don't seem distinct from each other and the cultures don't either? Terrible! They didn't learn the lesson that Jackson did in the movies? They didn't notice that Weta Workshop spent vast time and effort creating unique looks for each culture's stuff? Amazon has no excuse for this.
You guys are right: these showrunners today hate the creators of these iconic I.P.s and are determined to change everything and just use the familiar names and stuff to draw people into watching it - only to screw fans of the I.P. over then try to shame the fans for hating it. Some of the fan-made videos are better than the big budget Hollywood movies because the fan-made videos are made by people who are passionate about the I.P. and don't hate what it stood for originally.
My orc spinoff idea: Orcy Towers.

Regarding the Palantir's. A single palantír enabled its user to see places far off, or events in the past. A person could look into a palantír to communicate with anyone looking into another palantír. They could then see "visions of the things in the mind" of the person looking into the other stone.
The stones were made of a dark crystal, indestructible by any normal means, except perhaps the fire of Orodruin. They ranged in size from a diameter of about a foot (30 cm) to much larger stones that could not be lifted by one person. The Stone of Osgiliath had power over other stones including the ability to eavesdrop. The minor stones required one to move around them, thereby changing the viewpoint of its vision, whereas the major stones could be turned on their axis.
