- If you have a red rash around your mouth, then you could be experiencing perioral dermatitis (sometimes called periorificial dermatitis). As a dermatologist, I see patients with perioral dermatitis almost daily! So today, we’re going to talk about what it is, what causes it, and some treatment options.

I had perioral dermatitis twice. The first time I did zero line treatment (no makeup, no moisturizer, etc) with antibiotics. Lasted around 6 months. I got it again, a year or two later. This time I used makeup and adapalene. Last 6 months again. Then I discovered azaleic acid 15%. I originally started this for some acne scars but I realized anytime I started to get dermatitis bumps, I would put the Azelaic acid on the bumps and the bumps WOULD NOT SPREAD or WORSEN. I haven’t had a full blown rash in years. I have only seen a few dermatologists recommend azaleic acid for perioral dermatitis because I don’t think anyone actually knows how to treat perioral dermatitis or what causes it.
Where did you purchase the azelaic acid? I’ve been looking for a stable form and sounds like the one you’ve found must be stable as it has worked for you. I use a prescription cream but have wanted to try this for maintenance and at early stages or recurrence. Thanks in advance if you get my message
@@carak4356 I get a prescription for the 15% azelaic acid. You can get that from a dermatologist, Goodrx care (you have to pay a fee for the virtual consultation), or Apostrophe is an online dermatology company that compounds the prescription for you. The Ordinary makes a 10% azelaic acid topical you can try too. I personally used that only once and didn't like the texture but wanted to mention that option as well.
Dermatology in a nutshell, they usually know nothing or how to treat it or even diagnose it.
@brookekasperzyk4850 Could you tell me how you use azelaic acid? I applied it but it made my skin tight and resulted in exfoliation. I do feel my rash is a tad bit better but I want to know if I am going right.
did the adapalene help cuz i’m abt to try but scared
This was a really great video. So informative and helpful and made me feel better. I was feeling nervous and hopeless about my perioral dermatitis, but you made me feel a lot better and more hopeful about it clearing up. Thanks for the information and warm spirit.
Very helpful. My derm just diagnosed me with perioral dermatitis and I’m starting both topical meds this week. Fingers crossed, bc this isn’t fun!
I was 64 when i got this . I suffer from psoriasis ,so i used that cream on it . Bad move. It got worse and grew. It's itchy, and it's now all over my nose and between my eyebrows. I am so glad i found this video.😊
Thank you for this video, this was such a eyeopener. I now understand that the flares I sometime get are periorificial dermatitis and I now know exactly what it's linked to/what causes it.
My 4yo has this type of dermatitis. This tips are very helpful. Thanks
The only thing that finally healed mine was zero therapy. IT took one whole year to fully disappear, and now my skin is better than ever. PD is usually a sign your skin cannot handle the chemicals you are putting on it no matter how 'minimal' they are marketed as. Some of us cannot tolerate skincare. Trust your skin to repair itself. If mine can, anyones can. It just took a year of pain, sacrifice and patience
Did you go without fluoride toothpaste for a whole year as well?
@@sarahhyde3284 No, flouride toothpaste had nothing to do with my PD. Mine was caused by applying skincare products to my face. Its actually frustrating that flouride toothpaste is cited as a leading cause of PD as while it may be a cause particularly for children, for adults who having been using flouride toothpaste their whole life with no issue and are suddenly developing PD, this isn't going to be a cause. 90% of PD cases occur in young women, who no coincidence are starting to apply skincare and makeup. So the cause needs to be studied further by dermatologists. Dermatology is really behing in regards to recognising how sensitive skin can be damaged by even 'hypoallergenic' products and how this is leading to the current epidemic of rosacea, acne, PD, seb derm etc. Just remember PD is a barrier issue, something is damaging your barrier and you just need to find out what that is. Zero therapy for at least 6 months the best option as nothing can come into contact with the barrier and it can have the time it needs to heal, and it does need a long time, for me a year, but the body will heal it.
@@sarahhyde3284 no flouride wasn't the culprit for me, skincare products were. If you have been using toothpaste your whole life and have suddenly developed PD, then its highly unlikely you have suddenly started reacting to it after 18 years when it hardly touches your skin anyway. Instead pay attention to the chemicals you have put on your skin in more recent months/years. Not eveyone can tolerate skincare products.
Flouride in toothpaste can be a cause for babies and kids but far less likely for adults despite what dermatologists like to claim.
I’ve suffered from several types of dermatitis and Perioral is one of them. I can attest that I’ve had the best results with completely eliminating all skin care except basic cleanser and moisturizer and most recently I purchased Dr. Samantha’s Prequel line (Gleanser, Barrier Therapy, and Utility Ointment) and my skin has been the happiest it’s been in a long time! Those 3 products alone are keeping my redness and flare ups at a minimum! 🙌🏻
10/10 this video was so well done, thank you
Thank you so much, having had perioral dermatitis related to peri menopause / stress... this is v v helpful indeed. Thank you :)
This is genuinely the BEST video I’ve ever seen on PD. Thank you SO SO MUCH!!
So happy you found it helpful!
How do i fins a dermatologist like you in phoenix az. Do you offer teledoc like appts.😂@@DrSamEllis
Just got diagnosed with this today after my dermatologist appt, plus eyelid dermatitis. I never thought there was a lot of triggers. Thank you for the info. I hope the treatment works, I’ll be on Doxy for 3 months plus some creams.
That’s exactly what I needed! I have them pretty often now that I’m on my 30’s (I also have rosacea) and it is so annoying.
Have you tried metronidazole. It cleared my rash in a few days.
Currently struggling with PD and this was very helpful and echoed what my dermatologist recommended...
Has yours gone away?? I’m struggling with mine rn it came back
@@lettucepieceof6043 I had perioral dermatitis a few years ago. My lips don't hold up well in the moistureless winter time. I knew it was perioral dermatitis before I saw my GP. I spent like 10 seconds with him, he gave me a prescription and it went away within like 2 days.
A few years later here I am on the verge of getting PD again. It's gotten colder here in the Southern Hemisphere and due to a condition I have to breathe through my mouth more often then I would like to.
This sucks
I woke up with this this morning! Small rash from nose to around mouth. I don't know if it's a coincidence but I've started using a whitening toothpaste. Thanks. Lisa, Ireland.
A long term sufferer of PD and the most recent 2 triggers I believe were fluoride and mask wearing. Also being pregnant didn’t help. I do believe stripping back on skin care is key and it’s about restoring the skin barrier together with anti inflammatory products help such as azelaic acid. The other thing is trying to not let it bother you as much although its much easier said than done.
Is it just me or is Sam EXTRA glowy today??? Stunning (and informative, as always)!!
I experienced perioral dermatitis after 3 weeks of retinol use. Get a prescription for metronidazole. After just a few days my rash is almost gone. I'm thrilled with the results.
did it come back?
Was it oral or topical?
did it work and stay gone?
Thank you for making this video! I remember how hard it was when I first experienced PD so love that everyone has this video as a resource.
I struggled with Perioral Dermatitis really badly and was prescribed an antibiotic and topical. As I healed, I found anything zinc made a huge difference Avene Cicalfate+ Restorative protective cream was the best to calm down the area (with Cerave hydrating cleanser) and Jasons power Smile toothpaste was a great switch as fluoride was a big trigger for me. When I could do SPF again colour science and elta md were the best. With these products, I finally have it under control
I've had this exact same problem and Zinc, Avene and changing my toothpaste was exactly what helped me as well!
I just went to the dermatologist yesterday and was diagnosed with perioral dermatitis. Dr. prescribed a low dose of doxycycline… I’m allergic to metronidazole so I got clindamyacine lotion instead. Crossing my fingers it works! I am changing my toothpaste and trying gentle cleansers. Switching to mineral sunscreen.🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽
In case it helps anyone, I used to get perioral dermatitis all the time and it turns out the trigger was Aquaphor (though Vaseline was fine!). My dermatologist said this was a fairly common trigger for people with this skin condition!
Ever since I stopped using Aquaphor, I haven't had a single flare up.
Mam you use aquaphor product cream or Vaseline I'm 23 yrs old nd I faced for 1 nd half yr still I have bad 😢 my derm give me moisturizer nd liquid paraffin not work good to me I have this prblm in my around nose mouth nd eyes so if I can use this aquaphor on my mouth r not
How many days you use aquaphor mam ?
I think my trigger was a nasal spray. Was it caused by yeast?
I was told to use aquaphor to fix it
@@lettucepieceof6043 I personally would try Vaseline instead but that’s just because Aquaphor was the sole cause of mine.
I've mostly experienced around my eyes and have found that tea tree oil wipes and sulfur soap really helps.
great video! Thank you. Can you use any of these treatments while pregnant?
Thanks you , your makeup looks amazing and of course you took
Oh Dr. Ellis, thank you for this. I remember wanting to request a video on this about a month ago, but I can't remember if I did or not, but thank you nonetheless!! I had this in all 3 places, around the mouth, next to the nostrils, under my eyes, and even eyelids. After consulting the internet, I ceased usage if ALL products; sunscreen was a hard one to forego. I found a dermatologist, but by the time she could see me, I was cleared up. I then started adding things back in, slowly. So far, so good. I have ultra sensitive teeth, seriously, I need to microwave fruit so I can even bite into them. I found a fluoride that didn't burn, so I was using it every day. And because it didn't burn at all, I would keep it in my mouth extra long. I just started it back up again last night. I use a bit less, swish it around a shorter amount of time, and just a couple of times a week. I hope this all works out. Anyway, thank you so much for doing this!❤
Which fluoride ? Name
@@user-vd5gh7je1v I'm sorry, I'm not naming brands on a public page. Too many people are sue happy.
Just had my first experience with this problem. About 3 weeks in and it is almost gone. It looked the same for the first two weeks. Then I started using Mary Kay night emollient cream. It is a pink Vaseline like product. Also switched to Cetaphil.
Thank you for this information! I've been looking for an explanation for years as this condition flares up and down - depending on the environmental triggers. Time to switch toothpastes for a while.
What the toothpaste you switched to?
My first, and so far only bout, started after using a different makeup brand that caused a rash and I treated with hydrocortisone cream. I finally saw a dermatologist after a couple months of trying online and doctor suggestions. Based on the severity and spread of mine, we went straight to oral doxycycline and topical erythromycin. It is currently cleared but if I use any creams, serums, or pimple patches on the areas, I start to see a flare.
Super video top notch 👍
Mine lasted most of my teen years. Like 12 to 20 lol. I am 47 and went to cedar point this summer and boom its back. Grr. My daughter has this also.
I've had it for a couple of months. My doctor gave me antibiotics this week. She said they'd make my skin sun sensitive and I should use SPF but won't the SPF exacerbate the rash. Also I've read that sulphur can help. Would you recommend?
my perioral dermatitis started when masks became mandatory due to covid, at first wearing them made me just itch but then redness began with dryness, now it's been 2 years since i have it so i learned how to treat it, itching and dryness stopped but redness never goes away it's like my skin don't want to heal completely, i was ugly before but now damn i get scared when i see myself in the mirror and i'm not joking, as a teen it's tough i'm having problems leaving the house for how ugly i feel
Switched to sls free toothpaste and so far the irritation has gone away. Burt’s bees has several options that are sls free but with fluoride. Need fluoride for teeth health. Also use alcohol free but with fluoride mouthwash.
I’ve dealt with it on and off since I was a teenager. My old dermatologist had diagnosed me, but my new one “loosely” diagnosed me with rosacea. I just went to see him again and again said use either Fucibet cream or Noritate. I went with option one now it’s out of control after I thought it was initially getting better. Now I’m on tetracycline, and stopped makeup and normal skincare, switching to Avene gentle cleaner.
MY QUESTION: is Noritate considered a steroid and will it make it worse. What are your thoughts on zinc soap? I am finding my outbreak is sore, and feels “alive”. Is there anything else I can try to get relief? Oh and to make it worse, I have a propylene glycol allergy.
Mine was caused by Vitamin C. Took a year and multiple rounds of antibiotics and topical medication to finally figure out it was just from my vitamin C serum.
I also got it from a vitamin c serum. The advice is to use vitamin c to help your skin but you end up with perioral dermatitis! Mine took ages and ages to go, will never use it again.
Same here got it from vitamin c serum
Shit. My mother gave me a cleanser concisting Vitamin C which I recently started using, these rashes started appearing a little after… thank you!! You might have solved my problem
I have POD and have had to majorly overhaul my skincare and makeup. I can’t use CeraVe or Cetaphil, the both leave my skin really tender and bright red. I’m currently using just water and a face halo for “cleansing” and Aveeno for moisturising but it’s not moisturising enough.
POD is the most frustrating thing I’ve ever had to deal with
Thank you for this Dr Ellis. I thought elidel is not safe to use for long term? I’m been using it for several months and am trying to ween off but had a rebound flare when I stopped cold turkey.
I couldn’t figure out what was wrong with my skin when I first had this dermatitis on my face so finally my dermatologist told me it was perioral dermatitis and gave me Pimecrolimus and my skin literally cleared up in two days. I can’t believe I struggled with it for months and it cleared up so fast so please guys speak to a dermatologist if you’re have any skin issues.
Please tell mine i got this near my nose and mouse
Did you apply the cream to your entire face or just the affected area?
@@ItzEdward Hi! I applied it to the affected area at first and but now I just apply it to my entire face when I gave it again and it’s totally fine. Please speak to your dermatologist first. 😊
Switch to fluoride free toothpaste really helps.
Lotrimin w/Butenafine hydrochloride 1% cleared mine right away when antibiotics and expensive prescriptions did nothing
Hi I live in the Uk … struggling with skin rash very dry itchy periods of 3 to 6 months then ok for short while then back to the same problem.
Been to the doctors many times prescribed creams but still will not refer me to a skin care specialist..
But I will keep trying xx
Thank you for making a video about this! It was so informative. I’ve struggled with eczema my entire life and I’ve more recently had very bad inflammation around my mouth, nose and hairline and just thought it was eczema. I’ve been using steroid cream every other week! I’m definitely going to go to a derm to have it looked at. Thank you!
I don't recommend using steroid creams on your face, it can cause a nasty rash. Spreads from your nostrils, to your mouth, to your eyebrows. Though everyone is different
Don’t use steroids! It will come back with a vengeance
Around the end of 2021, the edges of my lips started to dry quickly and itchy and lip balms weren’t keeping it hydrated enough. Months went by and it got really bad (the area around my lips were red and looked swollen). I finally went to a walk-in clinic and they diagnosed me with PD and said it was caused by my prolonged use of masks and licking my lips. They prescribed me with a cream and said it should be gone after 10 days of use and while it did go away, it keeps coming back. My lips definitely retain hydration better but when it dries up, it really dries up. Super frustrating.
I feel your pain because I'm going through the same issue. I don't really remember when it started, but it seems like it happens once a month. I also noticed it's a week or so before my period starts
You are absolutely gorgeous and very informative
Creepy af
THANK YOU
I thought for the longest time, I just had an allergy but weirdly, it always happened during vacations. The triggers for me were mainly because I used topical steroids, and during vacations I always use sunscreen. Additionally it's usually a different environment, with more sun and wind exposure. Plus I'm an avid makeup user lol.
Recently, the flare up was the worse, with pustules. It was very itchy and somewhat tender, all over the sides of my nose down to my mouth, the inner corners of my eyes, to my eyebrows.
I stopped using anything, even cleanser or sunscreen. I just washed my face with warm water. Then what really helped was Erythromycin 0.5% supposedly 1% but the 0.5 worked just fine. I used it 3 times a day, then just stopped when it was gone after a few days.
Also, I just hid my face with huge sunglasses and a cap and tried not giving a shit when I'm on vacation, supposedly taking pics but feel ugly asf.
Thank you so much for doing a video on perioral dermatitis!! I’ve been struggling with this for almost a year and my dermatologist keeps prescribing antibiotics which I don’t love being on. Also purely vanity, I hate how it looks 🙄 and itchy
Ask for a prescription for Azelaic acid 15%. You will most likely need to moisturize before putting Azelaic acid on because it will be itchy while you adjust to the treatment. I have had perioral dermatitis twice and I can vouch this is the best method. Antibiotics did nothing for my rash.
Antibiotics are a major cause of this because they can alter the microbiome allowing yeasts to proliferate. Antihistamines play a huge role too because they affect H1 receptors that also control sebaceous glands which then don't secrete properly causing further skin drying and damage, that allows yeasts that feed off the fat of your cells and microbes to enter deeper into the dermis, then the immune system wants to react. It's a horrible viscous cycle mostly caused by psychotic MDs.
Hi dr sam ellis ,looking forward to watching this video 😊 ❤ xx
For the moisturiser and SPF, could you just not apply it to the area with the rash? I know that products seep for a distance under the skin, but I imagine this would at least be a sort of middle ground and still keep the rest of the face moisturised and protected from the sun?
Hi Dr Sam, Thank you so much for making a video on this! I’ve been suffering with this since February, It's around my mouth and even my lips are highly pigmented and dried up. I was prescribed Azelaic acid and lymelysal 300mg. When I searched about Azelaic acid it is said not to be used around mouth. But my problem is around the mouth area. So is it okay to apply around the mouth at night avoiding the lips? What should I use to keep the area hydrated? Thank you
Drs can't give you medical advice in UA-cam comments, they'd be open to legal action.
Have you been able to fix yours ?
You look like a princess!
Manuka honey really helped mine.
Perioral dermatitis gang!! One way that I make the “skincare diet” work for me (since my skin is really dry and I can’t skip moisturizer), I just skip it around my mouth. Pimecrolimus works great with that routine too, and a sulfur + sulfacetamide wash
been doing this too (skipping moisturizer in my flare areas) and it’s working.
Got this when I was pregnant with my daughter (not my son). Went away a month after she was born!
Me too ! I have this since I’m pregnant with my daughter and didn’t with my son, it’s been 6 months… am waiting to see a derm but don’t have much expectations
What is the difference between perioral dermatitis and allergic cheilitis please?
Purple LED light has helped me. I’m an asthmatic and got it from my inhaled steroids and retinol
I'm dealing with this now. Wonderful to learn its reoccurring!!
Does anyone know if it's scarring? Will the redness ever go away after a raging flare-up? 😫
Dermalogica water gel is the ONLY moisturizer my skin can take, and ive tried more than 20 different ones throughout the years, cheap expensive, luxury, you name it. This one is expensive, but worth every penny for my PD skin. My skin is combo and I cant imagine not using moisturizer, especially when having a flair up. Sometimes
, if my skin feels dry, i would put moisturizer directly onto wet skin after washing. It helps!
I narrowed mine down to baking soda toothpaste. Currently it's a new vitamin c serum. Back to my normal vitamin c serum.
Can tacrolimus cream/ointment make Perioral Dermatitis worse? I find mine helped a bit but it made it go red every time and now there’s dark discolouration 😢
If you are at the initial stage of it.. Just keep your face clean.. Use face wash if you've used any product such as sunscreen or moisturizer and then apply Surfaz SN ointment.. It is available at the medical store.. Worked for me
Ive had this for about 8 months . The only thing that helped me and got rid of it after about a week was teatree face wash ( i let it sit on the area for my entire shower and wash off at the end ) and then sudocrem at night. Also avoiding any glycolics, retinols or vitamin c around the area
That's because the Tea Tree killed the yeast which is the real cause. Which then allowed your skin to heal.
Surprising. I was using this wash and I feel it exacerbated it. Stopping it and using a sensitive wash was much helpful.
@@mariamhalfani28 this face wash was just teatree maybe some other ingredient made it worse. It feels like most things make it worse. I originally thought it was acne so i was putting alot of glycolic ect on it and it god so much worse. I hope you got yours sorted
@@ktmcpdd using a Simple face wash at the moment and an Aveeno moisturiser. Struggling with the hyperpigmentation of the area though. So I am planning on trying the Original mandelic acid and seeing how that works out.
What brand you use tea tree?
I get perioral dermatitis periodically. I have no idea how or why but the cleansing balm that constantly clears it up is Elemis Cleansing Balm.... It is super expensive, but for some reason, it just clears it right up. I am shoooocked about the mints! I am a gum chewer!!! Thank you!!!!! Just finished a flare-up myself. I definitely recommend the Cerve moisturizer if you need it. Metronidizole's side effects look exactly like perioral dermatitis and when I stopped using it my face cleared up. Thank goodness, but anyone suffering, don't give up! It can be frustrating but I promise it will go away :)
Hi Sam,
I had this really bad, tried everything ( I thought ) then I put nappy cream on it as TikTok said. It actually did clear it, do you think this was coincidence or could there be more to it?
Is there any other cleanser they changes the formula from both one cotains now niacinamide and the other shea butter
Ichthammol/Ichthyol and Zinc ointments really helped me cure my perioral dermatitis very quickly. Dermatologist recommended to try it before antibiotics. Also it helps with acne :)
What zinc ointments did you use please
@@sehamhamoudeh8719 Should be a very simple creme with Ichtammol and Zinc combo. It can be prepared in a pharmacy. Also some brands can have it ready made. In my country it is Tormentin creme for example.
I had wicked rosacea that i had under control finally. Well i had to wear a respirator for long periods of time now im battling Peri oral dermatitis.
Mine is not temporary, I deal with it since I'm teen. I've tried pretty much everything. Changing tooth paste, stopping with the skin care routine, stopping eating gluten, using Vitamin-D supplements, nothing worked....... I've been to the dermatologist many times, tried what they suggested, didn't work also :D
I have Perioral Dermatitis that spurred from masking during the pandemic, and it has been so frustrating. I’ve worked with my Derm the last 3 years to keep it at bay but watch informational videos, too. This was great! Any tips as I head into winter months in NC? Seems to be worse then!
What worked for you? I have the same issue from mask wearing and I feel helpless..
I recently bought some natural mint toothpaste and it caused perioral dermatitis around my mouth. I stopped using the toothpaste and it cleared up in 2 weeks.
My derm recommended Lotrimin. The problem is that brand has many different products with many different ingredients.
Is it normal that after using metronidazole in cream my symptoms get worse?
I have dariers disease for years. There seems to be no cure. I use. Topical cream, fluocinonide but it doesn’t work. Have you ever encountered it and if so do you have any recommendations. Thank you
I think I had this , little weepy spots. Cured it with t tree plus antibiotic cream.
@dr Ellis
Thoughts on EUCRISA?
I'm actually on low dose isotretinoin due to chronic perioral dermatitis! It's the only thing that works, this time my treatment plan also includes aklief and spironolactone, and I love it, I had already been struggling with it for years.
It’s so good to know this!🤍I’ve been dealing with this for long time. I switch my moisturizer to skin fix cream moisturizer and I’ve been using since April . it’s incredible how much my it improved my skin. The rashes around my mouth haven’t come back since I start using it. The previous moisturizer I was using was the naturium moisturizer and I loved it but didn’t help with these rashes around my mounts they just to come and go all the time.
I’d like to know what kind of sunscreen would be best for this cases. I’m using the glow sunscreen from naturium at the moment .
Thank you for this! Mine popped up after we wore masks for so long and now it’s relapsing/remitting 😞.
Hi for those who experience it does oil make your condition worst ?
Interesting I was told and I am pretty sure it was true that I should only use a moisturiser (the dermatologist recommended one), since for me my main trigger was my cleanser. (Looking back it did irritate and burn a tiny bit when I had the rash). I am NOT saying that what she is saying is not true, but that there are apparently different things depending on the person. Maybe it will help someone.
I am 52 years old and for some reason my lips feel really dry and has red on my upper and lower lip on the skin. I have been using Dr.Dans chapstick for over ten years. This has never happened. I have been putting aquaphor to change it up and see if it helps. I don’t really think it is helping. The only other product I have put on my lips is the lanaige lip mask at bedtime. Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for the video.
Im dealing with it and use laniege every night. Maybe time to skip it 🥲😅
Check ingredients in your products. If SLS is used get rid of it. It is used in so many products from toothpaste to skin care, shampoos , cosmetics etc. also try fluoride free toothpaste it may help you. Work on diet to help from inside out. Sugar is a culprit and some vitamin deficiencies too.
Interestingly, going *on* the contraceptive pill was the only thing that cleared my PD after 8 months of a v severe rash..
I get PD this year, February for the 2 or 3 time, it cames flamely and horrible. I found out that was caused by corticosteroids. Now i use Bulgarian rose water , aloe gel, hyaluronic acid, i have azelaic acid and i will use it more often. Thanks for this video and the recommendations.
What has helped cure it the fastest?
I get this from coconut oil and coconut oil derivatives. Caprylic/capric triglyceride is the worst, and it's in just about everything. I thought I had hormonal acne until I figured it out - I haven't had a breakout since I eliminated products containing caprylic/capric triglyceride.
Would you share which products/ moisturizer works for you.
@@julierichoux7259 I use Vanicream moisturizer, Paula's Choice Super-Light Wrinkle Defense tinted mineral sunscreen (when I care about how I look) and Cetaphil Face mineral sunscreen (when I'm not worried about a white cast). I like Cetaphil oil-free moisturizer too, but it was too light for me. Cetaphil oil-free moisturizer with SPF isn't bad either, but I have trouble tolerating chemical sunscreens.
Oh my gosh, are you me? I have the same issue! I had the worst (what I thought was a breakout) for months, only to learn it was a reaction/irritation to the coconut oil and its derivatives. I’ve gone back to silicones, aloe, and glycerine for moisture.
Just look for products that don’t have those ingredients at all, or I at least not in the first 10 ingredients in the list (they’re used at much lower percentages the farther down the list they are).
I got it from tret i was gutted because my skin looked amazing whilst using it then a year in it started, was really hard to figure out what was causing it because it didn't show up till a year of using it.
Also I am curious, could probiotics (essentially fermented plant extracts) be a cause for perioral dermatitis? I started using Beauty of Joseon's SPF50 on a daily basis around the time when my rash began to appear. I've never had it before this. The only reason I'm not sure if it is this, is because I changed my cleanser and toothpaste around the same time (just by coincidence - I had run out and wanted to try something new). Now it's a pain trying to figure out what has caused it!
My daughter got fungal acne from this sunscreen.. I would stop using it
@@ABerta. oh wow! that's interesting to know. I stopped using it and toned down all my skincare and the rash cleared up but it took about a month so I'm still not sure if it was definitely the cause.
Hmmm...I had been using the same sunscreen for a few months when I developed PD, and when I started using it again after my skin cleared I immediately had another flare up.
@@christinesarkis4029 that's interesting! I never tried using it again but my PD has never returned since I stopped using it.
I’ve had Pd for years, diagnosed by a dermatologist. It looks like I have acne each side of my chin. I have to be careful not to even put too much moisturizer, as that can cause a problem. I started using an oil cleanser, then followed it by gently(!!!) rubbing brown rice powder (diy) on my face. Weirdly the PD seems to be going away. I’m wondering if my own dead skin cells were exacerbating the pd. I haven’t had clear skin for so long that the inflammation was creating wrinkles and now the skin is rebounding. Wish I knew what was causing this and how the brown rice powder is helping. I’ve tried too many things and am almost in disbelief, waiting for disaster around the corner.
So what toothpaste shouls i use?
I’ve consistently had pd for over 15 years wym it goes away?! lol absolutely sucky knowledge on the condition
I have perioral dermatitis for the first time. I am currently in the third week of erytromicin topic and I did clindamicin oral(8 days) . I could not use doxycycline since its summer.I saw little improvement. And sometimes its get better and then worse and after that better. I removed the most common triggers. Is it common this cycle?? How long it takes to get better. And if you had any tip can you please help me??
Antibiotics are a major cause of this because they can alter the microbiome allowing yeasts to proliferate on the skin like malassazia and candida which is usually the cause.
Dr. Ellis, can this be caused from tretinoin? I never had it before and I had the outbreak after I started using tretinoin.

I have this right now and it's SO PAINFUL for me right now. I just brushed my teeth and just the menthol getting on my lips caused it to burn so badly. I went to a walk in clinic and the doctor was shocked when she saw how quickly it spread throughout my face. It's all around the left face and it's painful, but I'm sure it will pass.
I'm just using a very plain facial cleansing routine. No dyes, no perfumes, and no fancy ingredients for anti-aging and I'm not going to use ANY MAKEUP! Luckily my Boyfriend is super supportive and he tells me it's not too bad... IDK if he's just trying to make me feel better but it helps.
I have had mine for 6 years the last 2 constant
I’ve had perioral dermatitis, it was the worst. My doctor said it was probably the whitening ingredients in my toothpaste. I did a round of antibiotics and then used metrogel.
Hey, how long the antibiotics and metrogel take? Are you PD free
I took the antibiotic for 3 months and used the metro gel for maybe 6 months. @@tajammalsaleem8803
Antibiotics can cause yeast infections. Try to avoid
I get a round of perioral dermatitis every year or two… still not 100% sure of exact trigger(s), but the latest has been oral isotretinoin! Here’s to hoping metronidazole and eventually finishing the oral isotretinoin round stops it! 😅
As soon as I see the bumps forming, I use Azelaic acid 15% and the rash never fully forms. I had to learn the hard way to stop it before the rash gets full blown bad. I had perioral dermatitis twice very bad a year or two apart (and it lasted 6 months each time).

I turned 60 in June 23. The perioral dermatitis Jan 24 I was like what is this so I was using tooth paste with charcoal I only chew the tydent bubble gum I stopped both. was already using gentle foam Cetaphil coconut oil. I hate foundation so this is crazy. I had acne in 20's & one issue on right side the microphone was rubbing my face years ago had to go back to dermatologist gave me cream gone in a week that was 20 years ago had no issues since & now this
I’m pretty sure that tretinoin caused mine. I would get dryness and peeling around my mouth, then I harshly scrubbed it. Bad mistake! I have had a few flares in the past couple of years. Doxycycline is the only thing that works for me. I use Tretinoin again, but I keep my skincare very simple. Products I am using that haven’t caused a flare, Paula’s Choice Calm line cleanser, Beauty of Joseon sunscreen, and LRP Triple Repair Moisturizing Cream. Also, I can use the is clinical cleanser in the morning. If I stray and try to go back to my favorite products, I flare. Toothpaste isn’t a trigger for me. Oh, most foundations I try cause a flare.
I think that tret caused mines also smh, I discontinued tret smh
I am another person that believes that Tretnoin caused mine. I have never ever gone through anything like this before and it’s extremely embarrassing. I am a teacher so I work hard to cover it up. Is there a certain makeup brand I can use?? I am grateful for any and all suggestions!!
My daughter is 9 and she just keeps getting it I was thinking about using biotic silver for it
I have had this since 2011. It hasn't gone away at all. And I know it was because I blew my nose way too much cause I had severe allergy issues. And then I'd put lotion on afterwards which stung. But I've been struggling with this. Been to a dermatologist a few times and it feels like nothing works at all!
I'm sorry, dear. Have you tried Aveeno moisturizers? Research on that esp the oat one. Mine started 2 weeks ago caused by the weather and was very irritating. Getting it was so helpful, the itch has stopped. Now, I'm wondering how I can help myself to remove the hyperpigmentation.
Are you using a nasal spray? I think this caused my rash.
@@heatherclark1796 no I wasn't using any sprays. I had severe polyps in my nasal cavities so those wouldn't work anyways. All I did was just blow my nose constantly till it was raw
@@heatherclark1796 I have a nasal spray as well and Now suffering this awful PD 😢😢
do u have insta or something? can i message u somewhere? i have the same exact cause and issue like u do
I used soooo many different creams which my doctor prescribed when I was 18 and first had PDermatitis. Didnt use cosmetics. Some months before I had full blown PD I used morning-after pill (hormones) and later had few bad stressful months when I started to overeat (emotional eating..). Could be those two thing combined which made my gut and who knows what else function badly. Dermatologist didnt ask these question, I later figured out it might do something..but anyways docs did nothing. Prescribed bunch of creams which did nothing or even worsen condition. I put myself on diet, did more sports, went to sauna regularly. Don't remember how fast it went away, but it did eventually.
At around 30 I got it again. The same pattern this time also of what I did wrong (morning after pill, overeating). Now its worse :(..7 years already. Have not been able to do the old routine. Max for week and no difference ..surprise surprise.
I think it is related to gut SO MUCH.
