Yummy 🤤! Please continue this “battle of the best” series! Would love to see a MEATJUN battle! My fav! I labeled myself a “sheltered local” growing up 😅 and had not explored all the different eats around the island. Thanks for sharing your eats so I can add these places to my list to try! 🤙🏼
Hi Amanda and Felix! Thank you for your great content! I was just visiting Oahu a few weeks ago and used your videos to map out our food tour :D I wanted to comment and appreciate on Amanda's picks at the end of the video. Something we tend not to think about when enjoying food is the flavor of nostalgia (which Amanda touches on) - foods that we grew up eating and enjoying that carry into our adults lives. When I visited Honolulu YEARS ago, my friend took me to Mitsu-Ken and ever since then, I've been chasing that high. In the end though, the food tastes best when with your favorite people.
OMG, I am so craving garlic chicken right now! Thanks for giving us the scoops on a few iconic places. I've tried Mitsu-Ken and Sugoi, but never heard about Aja and am thrilled it's so close to me. 😀 Continuing to love these "best of" series, and of course seeing all of you, including Da Von! Thanks again for more funny outtakes too. 🥰
Hi Amanda and Felix of course DaVon too! Garlic Heavenly goodness.. with a wonderful crunch very satisfying. So much work went into making this video thanks sooo much!
Yum, my favorite - garlic chicken! Actually, I like any kind of fried chicken - karaage, Korean fried chicken, and regular fried chicken like at Zippyʻs (even the old KFC). But I do love my garlic chicken. I think my #1 is Fort St. Cafe - maybe because of the sauce as Felix says, and I usually eat it there ,so itʻs freshly--made and nice and hot. I guess Sugoi is my second choice if I want the strong sauce. I havenʻt eaten at Mitsuken for a long time. My uncle used to live in the building on School St., so we often ate there, but I havenʻt been to the new one - people say itʻs not the same. I like the chicken at all of the other places because I like the Asian/Koran spice, but it really makes a difference if you take out and let it sit for a while and get soft and no longer hot. By coincidence, I just brought home some Zippyʻs Korean fried chicken tonight and it was a little burnt (dark) and soggy because it had cooled down, and the mac salad had warmed up. Not the most appetizing meal. But then I watched this video and I wanted to go out and eat garlic chicken again! And just a note from your friendly local English teacher: "criterion" is singular and "criteria" is the plural form. -- One criterion, two criteria. (Itʻs like phenomenon and phenomena.) I agree with all three of your criteria for choosing the best garlic chicken!
I'm with Felix in that Mitsuken garlic chicken was better at the school street location. I'm also with Amanda in that I need the accompanying musubi to make it complete. Sugoi is for sure a punch in the face with that garlic flavor. Great video as always!
Thanks for the great review! My Mom's favorite garlic chicken is Aja. She likes it more than Sugois and Mitsuken. She makes me get her some whenever I go to Ala Moana (not that often). Since the Alley is closer to where we live, sounds like we should give that a try too. Just to let you know, when you were eating at Aiea Shopping center you were right in front of a pretty good take out sushi place (Makoto Sushi). You might want to try it if you're in the area again sometime.
Good episode....just got back from 15 days visiting my Mom. Ate every ethnic food that I could including from the places you mentioned. I am home now just eating salads.
Love your vids. Ya all are helping me prep for a huge trip to Oahu later this year. I fell in love with garlic chicken on a visit to Bend Oregon’s Noi Thai. I was so excited to see that there is a real Noi Thai right by the Royal Hawaiian If you have not yet eaten there I strongly recommend their Crispy Garlic Chicken with Coconut rice, add their Pork appetizer for one of the best meals you will ever have!!!!
Need a part 2 for sure! Gotta go check out En Fuego and Broke da Mouth Grindz. Both in Kapoeli. Garlic Chicken is UNREAL!! they both have regular and Spicy versions. You're Welcome. 🤙🏽
We'll be visiting Oahu in a month. I have a long list of eateries/restaurants/food trucks that I want to try thanks to you two. Can you also do best ube desserts in Oahu? I absolutely love ube and I'm so glad to know that it's popular in Hawaii.
Aloha, Amanda & Felix...I just loved this episode on Garlic Chicken. I really enjoy the Best of the Best series. All of the criteria & critique were spot on. So many places make garlic chicken now, I agree that you have chosen the best. I would have had like to have seen Kjay's in Kaneohe added to this mix. I eat at all of these and probably Ajas the most because of convenience. Lastly, since Felix's favorite place is SUGOI'S, I may mention that Ross Okuhara used to be part owner with Sugoi's around 15 years ago. They split up and Ross created his own Drive-in called En Fuego Grill in Kapolei. The garlic chicken at En Fuego is a clone of Sugoi's. Ross started an En Fuego Okazuya now the mornings, so I am not sure of the Drive ins status. They do a lot of catering and making meals for public schools. Locally owned and operated. Ross's parents own OKUHARA FISHCAKE in Kalihi. Now you know...Peace out.
Hi Amanda, Felix and Yvonne. Apologies if I misspelled your sister’s name. That was a lot of chicken😋 Back when Mitsu Ken was on School Street my co-workers and I would eat there at least twice a week. It was yummy. Thank you for the video. Take care. Love and blessings ❤️🌺🙏❤️
Aloha Kakahiaka Felix, Amanda, DaVon nd Foodie 'Ohana!! Me nd my mom just pau watch this video. It was a good video. Y'all need to make a part 2. Keep them videos coming. Aloha 🤙🏽
I've actually had all the garlic chickens from the places that you guys visited in this video. Out of all those places, my favorite was Sugoi. With that said, Broke Da Mouth in Kapolei has been my favorite garlic chicken place ever since they opened.
I’m convinced the Broke Da Mouth chef is some trained culinary chef at a Michelin starred restaurant that decided to cook Hawaiian food. Every thing there is a can’t miss.
Garlic chicken sounds delicious Amanda and Felix! I make garlic chicken from scratch at home, which is the healthier version, staying away from crispy, deep fried garlic chicken.
Can I make a suggestion for the rankings? I like how you each give your first and second choices, however rank them 1 to 5 on a paper and then see who the overall winner turns out to be. Personally I want the garlic, when I want the garlic. So you know it’s Sugoi. I’m down to any and all of them, I think it depends on what the craving is at the moment. Amanda showing the hashi skills when eating the big pieces.
My mouth is watering! Aiea bowl and you gotta try K’s Bento in Waipahu one day. Those are my faves 🤤. If you go K’s bento, you should get it fresh late at night (at least past 10pm), a thing my friends and I did while in highschool.
Awesome video of Garlic Chicken. Sugoi’s man you can’t go wrong. Next time you go Chun Wah Kam they have a very good garlic chicken to chose from for one of their Ala carte choices
I saw Felix at sugoi a couple years ago, we were to shy to say hi. We love sugoi and was wondering when u guys were going to showcase them. Sugoi is so good 🤤
Foodie Ohana! I’m late to the garlic chicken party. I’m sorry. You always make me so hungry even though I have already eaten. You guys did a great job, and I would love to do a challenge with you in the future. Love you guys! 🤙🏽❤️🧄🍗🌴
Yaaay. Thank you. Your channel makes me so happy. My UA-cam account is broken or it would stick that after this January 1st I can't add to subscribe to any more channels. But I can still thumbs up! I loved this episode.
Guys, greeting from Okinawa Japan!! Garlic chicken is a favorite here in Okinawa. Very popular!! I have been known to eat it even though I don't like garlic. We eat it with inari sushi. Take care and keep making awesome content!
Loved this video! If you are in the Kalihi area, you should try the spicy chicken at Gulick delicatessen.. it’s not spicy, but very similar tasting to a garlic chicken. Try to go before the lunch rush, they run out of a lot of stuff early!
Best comparison ever. HK loco Moco drive inn is an honorable mention and easily accessible. Similar to the old Mitsuken (feel like it was better back in the day when it was in school Street) or waikamilo drive inn.
Finally getting to watch at 10 til 8. Caught the livestream on Friday and was wondering what the topic would be today. Now I'm hungry again. 😂 Roast Duck Kitchen in the background for the wrap-up! You should check them out if you haven't!
Fat Boy's is my Favorite for Garlic Chicken! I first had them at thier original restaurant on Nimitz Hwy, backside of the liquor store near Sand Is. McDonald's. Couldn't beat the $5 Garlic Chicken lunch special! They gave choke! So much, they had to tape the Styrofoam clam shell shut. Also was still so hot it would melt holes into the cover. LOL!!! This was back in 1999-2000. I remember the owner reminded me Timmy Chang, but older taller and bigger. Was happy when they opened their second restaurant in my Hometown of Kailua. But I been living on the Mainland since 2006 and seem to only get back home for weddings and funerals. But I do make an effort to visit a Fat Boy's and of course Papa Ole's in Hau'ula, which in my humble opinion is hands down the best plate lunch restaurant on Oahu.
Mitsu-Ken! I used to eat their breakfast special when I went to Kamehameha. $2.50 for fried rice, egg scramble, 2 piece bacon and garlic chicken! Da best!
I would definitely recommend K’s Bento Ya a small mom and pop spot in Waipahu. Their version of garlic chicken is called Cheyenne Chicken. So good. Pro tip gotta go super early like 5/6am since they prep and cook it early morning
cheeeeee, gotta get da sesame chicken next!!!! marukitei(?) in windward mall, if they're still there, was always da bomb!!! if you guys are up in the bay area, check out takahashi market or diamond head market! best local food outside of hawaii....well, in the bay lol.
I had to chuckle watching the announcing of the winner. I've had 4 of the 5, except for the downtown places for their Chicken. MItsuken & Sugoi's are really great chicken that I would never go out of the way just for Garlic Chicken. If I'm hungry for a meal and nearby either, I'd stop and get their food. The same for Aja's and the Alley, which my top two would be Mitsuken & Sugoi's, Aja's and Alley have great chicken, but man does not live on chicken alone. I'd almost think that after the review, that somebody would have stopped to see if Aiea Roast Duck still had Roast Duck, Chicken or Roast Pork available. Now I might not go to any one of the spots for their Garlic Chicken, but I only go to Aiea Roast Duck for the Roast Duck. If not, I'd pick up Roast Pork, Gau Gee, Char Siu, Roast Chicken. Aiea Roast Duck is one of the best around. The Chinatown places, I read one closed, but while others exist, I only know one place that my co-workers favored, so Aiea is the only one I know that is that tasty. I haven't had Mitsuken or Sugoi's for a long time, but both are classics.
Garlic chicken it is!! Based on this video only. I am with team DaVonne!!🤣 If not for the dryness as Felix mentioned I would pick Sugoi then Mitzu Ken. But I don’t like dry fried chicken- No one does anyway. Another GREAT VIDEO Foodie Ohana!
Sugoi's is my go-to because of convenience, but... The Side Street Inn is very, very comparable. A different variation is One Plus One's offering. You should give them a shot. No batter, all garlic and chicken.
Mitsuken breakfast was my daily when i worked at the shipyard, sugois used to be my go-to but the chicken has been inconsistent lately and the last time i went there i asked if a menu item was available and a guy in the back yelled at me and said "no more!!", never going back there again. Aiea bowl, the quality and quantity went down, know the owner personally but i'm not going to tell him. overall garlic chicken at all 3 places are good, so good that i am willing to eat it even though i have a slight garlic allergy and endure the consequences after.
Not a huge fan of Garlic Chicken, but appreciate the review. I would have to go with Aja for me too! Sugoi's is way too much garlic for me, and Mitsu-ken looked dried out. Next review: Teri or BBQ burgers? Love W&M but they are so expensive and not as good as it used to be.
2 more criteria should be dark meat and chicken marinated. I recognize the table where Aiea Bowl is, we parked there last year when we visited. ct from sf/ca.
Evon!!! Always a delight to see her in the videos. This episode should be called NSFP (Not Safe For Plane)! 🤣 We brought Sugoi’s garlic chicken bento on the plane back to LA…😅
Did Mitsu-Ken start the popularity/mainstreaming of garlic chicken? I don't recall seeing it on plate lunch menus and okazu-ya's in the 1980's and prior. If so, it came after the spam musubi...
@@AmandaFelixEats Mitsu-ken was likely one of the first in popularity. What I miss about working downtown is making the occasional trek to Fort Street Cafe for their garlic chicken.
Kalihi Native, My favorite used to Mitsuken's, however sometime in the turn when they changed location, the chicken changed, used to be crunchy, now chewier. Sugoi's is my favorite now, Amanda, I get the sauce on the side, so it's not overpowering. Felix, you look like you've been lifting.
Yummy 🤤! Please continue this “battle of the best” series! Would love to see a MEATJUN battle! My fav! I labeled myself a “sheltered local” growing up 😅 and had not explored all the different eats around the island. Thanks for sharing your eats so I can add these places to my list to try! 🤙🏼
Yes meat jun please
Meat jun sounds like a fun one! 🤙
For meat jun/Korean BBQ plate, Hands down....Seoul Food kitchen/Wahiawa, next to Foodland...Slam Dunk!
@@AmandaFelixEatsYoung’s Kal Bi in Aiea is the absolute best for Mear Jun 🙌🏽

I agree with your non-garlic choice. Sugoi’s sesame is my go to when I want sweet salty chicken without the heavy garlic flavor
Before clicking I already knew Sugoi would be on there!!
I saw Felix at sugoi a couple years ago, we were to shy to say hi. We love sugoi and was wondering when u guys were going to showcase them. Sugoi is so good 🤤

Mahalo for the tip! 🤙
None of these were within walking distance in Waikiki. Do you have a recommendation for garlic chicken in the Waikiki area?
A few people mentioned side street inn and Sam’s kitchen which are both walking distance from Waikiki 👌🏼

We gotta stop by! 🤙
Yall need to try side street inn in Ala Moana! Most tender chicken I've had
For sure gotta hit up side street next time🤤🤤🤤
Hi! Curious if you can pick top restaurants 10 miles or less to Aulani? A lot of people are traveling to that side too.
My pick is always the Mitsuken garlic chicken breakfast plate!
Breakfast of champions!
You should checkout Mitsuba…they get good garlic chicken too!

Mahalo for the rec Carol 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻 you’re team Amanda on this one 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
2 more criteria should be dark meat and chicken marinated. I recognize the table where Aiea Bowl is, we parked there last year when we visited. ct from sf/ca.

My favorite place is sugio
Sugois. Fried chicken skin with garlic sauce on the side. Like chicharrones. U won't regret and go early, they sell out
Sugois is the goat. Forty Niner Aiea also has mayjah garlic chicken 🤙🏽
I know one of your criteria is batter, but please give the garlic chicken at L&G a try. They’re at Pearl Highlands…you’re welcome
Lol you can see The Vonz in the reflection @ 7:46
Does Mitsu-ken still operate their food truck? Remembering, it being at Ward/Waimanu st. But that was >20+ years(YIKES!)
Only the establishment now 👍
Did Mitsu-Ken start the popularity/mainstreaming of garlic chicken? I don't recall seeing it on plate lunch menus and okazu-ya's in the 1980's and prior. If so, it came after the spam musubi...
Not sure who started it first but mitsuken is a must try! 🤙
Great tip!! And mahalo for the kind words Russell 🤙🏻
Sugoi., Come Get Some!!
🙌
Fort Street Cafe is the best

Oh, Not garlic chicken but my friends in Hawaii and California said the best fried chicken they ever ate was from Macy's Liliha bakery.
