Holy shit. What am I watching? A person being interviewed who isn't trying to weasel out of answering questions! Two people actually having a somewhat level discussion. With no blatant evasion tactics. This is amazing! Also, I love how Mr Chipman raises actual practical concerns, like "Where do we store the guns we confiscate". And yes, my reaction also was "That should absolutely not be the thing stopping police from taking guns" but yeah, of course it would be. I mean a guy with 74 guns, plus ammo, you can't just chuck those in a cardboard box somewhere in a basement.
The sad thing, though, is that's just a logistical problem that could be solved with some organization. If we had system in place where the cops were required to take gold bricks from people, they'd quickly find a place to put them and a system to organize it. They just don't _want_ to. It's a clear excuse to not get started on the problem. It's like when you ask your kids to set the dinner table and they whine, "But I don't even know where the cutlery is!" That's an excuse. An easily solvable excuse, that once solved, it's easy to go to the next step.

It doesn't fill me with confidence when someone talks with an ATF agent about all of the illegal and terrible shit that local police either ignore, or don't understand due to lack of training. And his response is just... Yep, you're right.
Well the ATF is undermanned and underfunded. They’re handicapped by laws in place. They’re not even supposed to have an electronic searchable database that would allow them to look up a person and see all the guns they own or a serial number to find a weapon, where it was purchased, and who it was sold to.

A small town near me, there are only 2 officers on duty during the day. One of them sits on the edge of town with a radar gun 5 days a week before and after work hours trying to catch people who don't slow down fast enough at the 55mph to 25mph sign.

So the argument's a no-brainer and it presents a clear path forward. The suicide issue is equally important but it can get derailed by mental health arguments, religious beliefs, questionable stats (suicide vs. accidental discharge), etc.. As for alcohol and domestic violence, yes it has a major influence. As it has on gun violence, car accidents, all sorts of crime, child abuse, bar fights, divorce, etc., etc., etc.. Not a cause, an amplifier.
All he had to do was get in trouble for an all white mostly male writers room for not being diverse. Now he has a writers room that is all female and mostly all white. Still no real diversity, but we are seeing different stories.

So what I get from this is we do not have a large enough ATF to be effective. I do appreciate the honesty in this conversation. For me its an easier pill to swallow if its the truth and not what you want to hear.
This is such a genuine, candid, and civil series. Fantastic questions and earnest answers. For such a difficult topic, this is a joy to learn more from.
John's always been a top notch interviewer. He really knows how to champion an issue and treat it as though he's the one being affected. He really just wants the best for everyone.
That is why Jon, in my opinon, is one of the greatest. Even some of the "woke media" intiverwers do not display this level of interaction because they are too reliant on being too antagonist instead of just having a conversation. And you can tell Jon is coming from a place of true curiosity to learn but still stand firm in his beliefs on whats right and wrong. I just glad someone besides John Oliver really just shines the light on real shit and not whatever the hell is trending on twitter. Twitter isnt real life, so why do people constantly rely on that to shape their worldview. It's something that really baffles me.
The answers definitely aren't always earnest, but Jon knows how to tell the difference and tries to press until he gets to something real, while keeping his cool and remaining respectful. Credit to the interviewees for agreeing to talk to him though, I expect that they know who he is and what they might be in for when they sit down with him.
If your takeaway from these is "who I can embarrass" then I think you're missing the point entirely. This guy he interviewed isn't even a gun lobbyist so I'm not sure how he's embarrassing him. In fact he gave him some of the points and areas that we are failing at.
When one domestic arrest can result in hundreds of guns being seized and you’re a small department with an actual storage shed for every piece of siezed property you ever take in and meanwhile people are screaming defund the police, this can be a bit tricky…
Maybe that's because they've actually seen crime statistics, unlike you. The guns that are being used to commit violent crimes are almost all illegal. And they almost all happen in places controlled exclusively by Democrats top to bottom, with very strict gun laws. America doesn't have a gun problem, it has a culture problem.

I'm so glad he mentioned the "warrior" mentality of police. We need to fundamentally change the our police hiring standards. WE DO NOT NEED WARRIORS! Especially wanna be warriors. Enlist and man a post if you're a warrior. We need Guardians. AAAANNNDDDD, police training needs to be 90% conflict management and 10% firearms. It's currently flip-flopped.
You need people with a warrior mentality for such jobs. I can't imagine a situation worse than a police officer caught in a criminal situation with a weak mentality. However we need our citizens to treat them with more respect so that such warriors are treated as officers, not a yardstick. The situation with domestic violence highlights the true problem. People's daily lives are becoming more stressful and the family structure is deteriorating. There's a lot that both sides can do, but primarily influencing the front line only weakens your defense if it's done without a solid plan. Firstly we need to get people level headed enough to contain their personal issues within the family, not blow up to a point where your neighbours get unwillingly involved. Not sure how one can stop that entirely.

When he said "police are strapped in their budgets" I literally laughed out loud. Police budgets have absolutely exploded over that last 40 years, outpacing ALL other municipal spending by many orders of magnitude. In fact, studies have shown that one of the primary reasons that crime isn't going down is that the social programs that help people in poverty, who sometimes turn to crime, have been cut in order to expand police depts. Get real!
So where is the problem? They say they need more money. You say they don’t. The reason officers aren’t better trained is because they lack the funding to train. You’re claiming a statement is wrong. How is it wrong? Otherwise you sound like a person screaming about the dangers of getting vaccinated for deadly diseases.

Great interview- two informed individuals having a respectful debate. These are the people that should receive attention, not the loudest idiots in the room getting attention just for being loud.
It seems like the latest youngest group of politicians never took a debating class in their education. These two guys talked about a very divisive issue without it becoming a cluster duck. The way debates are now, is if somebody says something that you don’t agree with you immediately have to start talking so that they don’t say anything else that can be understood by the debate audience. You see it in the House of Representatives all the time, when the chairman is telling people that the stenographer cannot take down your words because no one can understand anything that either of you are saying. When you have the floor, you should not be interrupted until you’re finished , or your time is up depending on the format. And the polite debater is going to get stomped all over by the one who doesn’t Follow the rules of debate that they should’ve learned in school. If you can’t debate effectively, how can you be a politician? Because it’s no longer a debate. Everyone gets up there with their talking points to please the people that voted for them so that they will vote for you again. One more thing. I wish it was constitutionally legal to test people about their knowledge of issues before they’re allowed to vote on them. Because the general public is living, just like the politicians are they don’t care about anyone else’s views but their own. Unfortunately, our citizens come out of school, completely uninformed about how the world works…even how their own country works. civics and ethics have been abandoned for “do anything for the bottom line.” I’m done now.

The 2A at minimum needs a major rewrite or be done away with to make it harder harder to own guns. Learn from nations like Canada, Australia and New Zealand on how to deal with mass shootings. Others like Japan, South Korea and Singapore have shown you can be incredibly safe without them. Just this week in Aurora, CO. We had 6 teens shot. Also, they was a gun incident at a HS just a few miles where I live. A school employee noticed the gun brought into the school and dealt with it before anything could happen.
The problem towards make improvements is that people would much rather dive into the most controversial of proposals rather than working to implement things both sides agree on. Politicians benefit from the gun debate so it's to their advantage to keep the issue lingering until its useful for their political goals.

I was involved in a domestic situation where my then husband was messed up on drugs and wouldn’t let me back in our home to get any of mine or my childs belongings and threatened to hurt me if I came into the house. The police came and literally let him call his mother to come help him leave the house with his guns and our child. They stated it was a domestic issue and they couldn’t stop him. That’s the moment I realized the police would never help me if I needed them. Not long after that he put a gun to my head and threatened me again. I didn’t bother telling the police but I did file for divorce. The system is flawed
But didn't you pick your partner? Character is the last thing people think about when linking themselves to others. And this is from the son of an abused mother. There will always be evil and disturbed people, we have to choose based on better information than sex appeal.

A person who doesn't take drugs now still might end up taking them later for any variety of reasons. If that leads to them becoming addicted and/or abusive, your information about them probably wouldn't have included that *until* it happened.

It’s because the ATF is the most lobbied against agency by the NRA, so they’re crippled to the point where they can’t do anything. For example: they’re not allowed to keep computer files at all. Only paper. For an agency with less staff than a mid sized city’s police department to cover 400,000,000 guns across the country. Let that sink in.

The last time I was in a gun store buying a gun. The guy in front of me was an ex-convict in his mid 40's with his elderly mother. His elderly mother was buying him a new hand gun. He kept telling her you have to do this you know how bad the people I am around are. The guy selling the gun knew exactly what was going on and all he did was tell them the convict had to quit playing with the gun and that he didn't have to sell it to them. He also said that the elderly women would have to hand him the money and she would have to carry the gun out of the store. This was at Williams Gunsight in Davison, MI. When you have this kind of disregard for the law from those selling guns. I am afraid that adding new laws will have little impact.
This kind of stuff happens all the time. Plus, there’s also states where private sales don’t require any sort of background checks; it’s akin to selling a TV… give me money, here’s your gun. If I buy a firearm, I figure it’s mine for life. If I were to sell it, it’d be to a licensed dealer.
I think we need clear laws stating that the legal owner of the gun is fully culpable for whatever occurs with that firearm. And the owner should have to sign a form stating that for each gun they buy. Basically unless she reported it stolen, that grandma shoulda been on the hook for whatever her grandson did with that gun. It should be like how get-away drivers in a robbery involving murder are charged the same as the ones that did the killing. Mutual destruction can be a very good deterrent. If the ex-con and grandma knew that whatever he did would equally effect her maybe he’d think twice. I feel like that puts less onus on the gun store owner (who may worry about the ex-con coming back to rob and/or hurt him if he denies the sale. There could also be an alert or red flag feature added to that fire arms registry. It wouldn’t be perfect but it would be a start. I think we also need mandatory registration of every fire arm. It’s time to be adults about this. No one should have secret fire arms stashes that the police aren’t aware of. That’s Wild West mentality nonsense that creates a dangerous environment for everyone. They should be treated like cars. No registration? Confiscate it.

wouldn't you expect policing to be the biggest line item in the budget, i mean think of the complexity involved and the risks. Not to mention policing impacts so many other state issues, for example if there's a major fire in a state forest, sure you call the state forestry department but you also call the police to assist, what you're not doing is calling the local teachers.

True, you're not calling teachers to manage emergencies, but the two occupations are so different and valuable that either/or thinking isn't reasonable. Hell of a lot of emergencies don't happen when people are well educated. The police turn to public information and courses to pre-empt issues like drink driving, litter, home security and domestic violence and they do help.
Maybe if you have a DV record, and someone reports you, and you get fired from the PD, maybe you didn't deserve to have that job. One cop with a DV record is too many. 60% of them? Ugh.
I enjoy the open minded approach here. They take both sides of the issue and attempt to make them happy, which may reduce polarisation. I.e. have guns and safe.

it's also worth noting that nearly all mass shooters also have stalking, sexual assault and/or intimate partner violence in their histories so moving the discussion back to preventing them from getting guns for those violations is the best method of preventing those events as well. and if it's only 10 thousand people lying on their ATF forms, they're doing it an awful lot because there were over 112 thousand instances of that in 2017--only 12 made it to court.
The overwhelming and vast majority of cases of "lying on their ATF forms" are people marking that they don't use marijuana when in reality they do. It's rarely lying about felonies (which would show up and flag the background check! whereas drug use isn't kept in federal databases, it's impossible to keep track of) or other more "reasonable" prohibitions on firearms ownership, although I don't believe convicted felons who have done their time and are no longer on probation should have any rights stripped.

This is honestly the best interview and discussion I've seen about gun laws and protocols. Like I actually learned about things, was completely engaged, and the questions and answers all felt genuine and honest. This is how interviews should be done.
My daughter's a teacher; I agree you're underfunded. It's a problem shared by almost all agencies that serve the public good. We taxpayers need to take a hard look who's benefitting from perpetuating these social problems--because that's where the danger is. We need to wake up to it.
@@bryanjacobs9680 It isn't even remotely utopian and it wouldn't fix everything, but it would make a lot of things better. Police don't reduce crime, poverty reduction does. Properly funded education has been proven to reduce poverty and rates of crime and recidivism. This shit has actually been studied wouldn't you know, a lot. It isn't utopian to do something new and proven to be more effective by science, it's certainly better than just doing the exact same thing we've been doing for half a century and expecting a different result, that's insanity. Police are expected to do too many jobs, and they are bad at all of them. Other countries are already trying different methods of law enforcement, prison and education reform and seeing much better results in crime and poverty reduction than the United States has seen in decades. It's really annoying to just dismiss something as utopian when it sounds too good to be true, you must be a real downer to be around. Space travel and brain surgery was utopian once upon a time but we figured that out, I believe human beings are collectively intelligent enough to figure this out as well.

I've sadly heard from some officer's, that some officer's actually start a stop watch when they get a domestic call, wait 20 mins. then go to the scene. They would rather roll up on a crime scene after things already escalated then show up and get into the middle of a fight that could end up with themselves wounded.
Usually they are called after it’s escalated. They are needed immediately when called. Neighbors have called multiple times on my ex- it NEVER took 20 plus minutes to get there

For those that are dismayed by the conversation, I understand. But THIS interview is immensely important. It's an honest explanation of the uncomfortable details involved with gun violence. What officers deal with. The real world consequences to being restrictive and giving a hugely important avenue for people who want to limit gun violence in their area. Make the current laws more effective, put gun violence in an honest light and restructure the view of guns. It's not pretty, definetly, but it's been the only interview that wasn't deflected with nonsense.

This is one of the best conversations I’ve ever heard about the problems with gun violence in this country and paths to take to get to solutions. I am a gun advocate, but I don’t own a gun, I simply believe in our freedoms. But I also believe when you choose to commit a violent crime you give up the right to own a gun anymore.

Im watching this almost year later and I gotta give Jon Stewart so much credit that he truly is capable of a master class interview and genuine discussion. It easy to ask questions to make someone feel uncomfortable, but to be able to ask questions that reveal frustrations with existing systems and discussing why and why not current regulations do not work on a professional level while keeping that level of being totally fed up with the broken systems is truly inspiring.
These interviews have been revealing that the people in charge aren't incompetent like we'd like to believe, but simply beaten into apathy or not that eager to change the system because it's the system that allowed them to get to be where they are in the first place
As someone married to a fed, its true. Also they can only do as much as Congress will allow them to do. They legally cannot exceed their agency mandate. The blame ultimately rests with Congress.
It does happen to men. I was abused by my ex wife for 3 years and when I finally decided to leave she called the cops and lied and I was the one in cuffs.
Jon is almost a super hero . I have seen him square off with very powerful people and come out on top . What's more important are the serious topics he gets into .

In New Zealand it took 6 days to bring in strict gun laws after the 2019 mass shootings of 51 dead in mosques. It took politicians on both sides to vote 119 yes to 1 no to strict gun laws. Over thousands were handed in with payment as compensation. It's to protect the public and the police as well as they are usually the first responders.

I was a prosecutor in a rural community, until I couldn’t take it anymore. After people having restraining orders or calls to a house with a person with domestic violence convictions, I told the law enforcement officers I worked with “take the guns out of the house”… they would be shocked and say “well, we can’t do that! That’s a federal law, not local law! These guys have a right to their guns”. Then women got shot and they asked me how they could’ve prevented it. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

I think that this is a fairly strong argument for requiring law enforcement to study law, to enforce the law; I think police should at the very least have a bachelors degree in law. It is strange to me that it takes twice as long to train someone how to cut hair and license them to use their scissors, than it does to train someone how to enforce the law with license to kill. Edit: The general studies will offer much more comprehensive training on speech, debate, and interaction as well.
They already can't get enough qualified people to join law enforcement. Adding a college degree, which most people can't afford these days, would decimate the force.

Frankly, the current system is a failure. It has been for a long time.. As a computer engineering major, I can augment a handful of police with reconnaissance drones and robotic assistance, but what has no solution from an engineering standpoint is barely trained, emotional betas, who think that their position means they are above the public, when as a civil servant they are meant to be beneath the public. Police do not and never will have the right to be judge jury and executioner (as we see in some of these cases) because making that call requires knowledge of law and passing the BAR and should never be conducted by any parties involved in the apprehension of a suspect, so when I see police performing "verbal kung fu" attempting to get people to incriminate themselves when there is a constitutional precedent to protect people from the same? My opinion is that they are operating in bad faith against citizens at best and domestic terrorists at worst; getting anyone to confess to a crime when under threat is dismissible by court in literally every case but this, right? So who decided to make the rule it was ok by law? Oh, ok, the people who profit off of it, who also decided that murder is illegal for everyone but them and circumvented rules of escalation and gave themselves license to kill through qualified immunity, circumventing the entire legal system. This system will never recover. It's only a matter of time before it collapses and it is already the case that when crimes happen they do absolutely nothing in most cases because criminals now operate in a 2 minute window, anyway. It needs to be rebuilt from the ground up? Centered around surveillance and information, because no feasible amount of police can be everywhere at once, but drones can be a part of every stoplight, and you don't have to pay them a salary. I got my cat converter stolen, my window smashed in, physically assaulted, I've had people break and enter.. Ive lived next to drug dens and reported them and they remained active for over a year after that until I moved away. Where were the police? Oh, giving me a jaywalking ticket on an empty road at 3 am. Worthless.

I think that’s a pretty heinous way of looking at it. At the end of the day, officers are humans, they have families and loved ones, and it’s a job. Risking your life is part of the job, but that does not forfeit the person in that uniform the right to basic instincts, like self preservation. Also, I love how Mr Chipman raises actual practical concerns, like "Where do we store the guns we confiscate". And yes, my reaction also was "That should absolutely not be the thing stopping police from taking guns" but yeah, of course it would be. I mean a guy with 74 guns, plus ammo, you can't just chuck those in a cardboard box somewhere in a basement.
The sad thing, though, is that's just a logistical problem that could be solved with some organization. If we had system in place where the cops were required to take gold bricks from people, they'd quickly find a place to put them and a system to organize it. They just don't _want_ to. It's a clear excuse to not get started on the problem. It's like when you ask your kids to set the dinner table and they whine, "But I don't even know where the cutlery is!" That's an excuse. An easily solvable excuse, that once solved, it's easy to go to the next step.

Well the ATF is undermanned and underfunded. They’re handicapped by laws in place. They’re not even supposed to have an electronic searchable database that would allow them to look up a person and see all the guns they own or a serial number to find a weapon, where it was purchased, and who it was sold to.

it doesn't HAVE to be overtime. I'm more than happy to have fewer cops spending time handing out parking and speeding tickets and doing more gun violence prevention during the normal 40 hour work week.
A small town near me, there are only 2 officers on duty during the day. One of them sits on the edge of town with a radar gun 5 days a week before and after work hours trying to catch people who don't slow down fast enough at the 55mph to 25mph sign.

@@adriannasmiths8262 Maybe because there's already The Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban, which is often ignored, and a recipient of domestic violence is five times more likely to be killed when the abuser has access to a gun. So the argument's a no-brainer and it presents a clear path forward. The suicide issue is equally important but it can get derailed by mental health arguments, religious beliefs, questionable stats (suicide vs. accidental discharge), etc..
As for alcohol and domestic violence, yes it has a major influence. As it has on gun violence, car accidents, all sorts of crime, child abuse, bar fights, divorce, etc., etc., etc.. Not a cause, an amplifier.
All he had to do was get in trouble for an all white mostly male writers room for not being diverse. Now he has a writers room that is all female and mostly all white. Still no real diversity, but we are seeing different stories.

So what I get from this is we do not have a large enough ATF to be effective. I do appreciate the honesty in this conversation. For me its an easier pill to swallow if its the truth and not what you want to hear.

This is such a genuine, candid, and civil series. Fantastic questions and earnest answers. For such a difficult topic, this is a joy to learn more from.
John's always been a top notch interviewer. He really knows how to champion an issue and treat it as though he's the one being affected. He really just wants the best for everyone.
That is why Jon, in my opinon, is one of the greatest. Even some of the "woke media" intiverwers do not display this level of interaction because they are too reliant on being too antagonist instead of just having a conversation. And you can tell Jon is coming from a place of true curiosity to learn but still stand firm in his beliefs on whats right and wrong. I just glad someone besides John Oliver really just shines the light on real shit and not whatever the hell is trending on twitter. Twitter isnt real life, so why do people constantly rely on that to shape their worldview. It's something that really baffles me.
The answers definitely aren't always earnest, but Jon knows how to tell the difference and tries to press until he gets to something real, while keeping his cool and remaining respectful. Credit to the interviewees for agreeing to talk to him though, I expect that they know who he is and what they might be in for when they sit down with him.

When the cops regard the inconvenience of storing guns as being more of a problem than stopping gun violence you know we are in trouble.

I made three falsifiable claims, pick one then try to formulate an actual argument this time:
1) Almost all guns used in crimes are obtained illegally. According to the DoJ report _"Source and Use of Firearms Involved in Crimes: Survey of Prison Inmates, 2016
"_ of 270K inmates surveyed, _"Seven percent had purchased it under their own name from a licensed firearm dealer."_
2) Gun violence almost always occurs in Democrat controlled cities. This is a no-brainer, just search for the places where all the murders happen and note who runs those cities.
3) The places with the highest gun violence also have very strict gun laws. Another no-brainer, pick any high gun crime area and look at the gun laws. If the laws actually worked, then most of the gun violence there wouldn't be perpetrated using illegally obtained firearms.
If the ostensible purpose of the anti-gun movement is to curb gun violence, yet we already know that restrictions do not prevent gun violence, then what is the real purpose of the movement?

However we need our citizens to treat them with more respect so that such warriors are treated as officers, not a yardstick. The situation with domestic violence highlights the true problem. People's daily lives are becoming more stressful and the family structure is deteriorating.
There's a lot that both sides can do, but primarily influencing the front line only weakens your defense if it's done without a solid plan. Firstly we need to get people level headed enough to contain their personal issues within the family, not blow up to a point where your neighbours get unwillingly involved. Not sure how one can stop that entirely.

When he said "police are strapped in their budgets" I literally laughed out loud. Police budgets have absolutely exploded over that last 40 years, outpacing ALL other municipal spending by many orders of magnitude. In fact, studies have shown that one of the primary reasons that crime isn't going down is that the social programs that help people in poverty, who sometimes turn to crime, have been cut in order to expand police depts. Get real!

Given all the murder hotspots around America, controlled top-to-bottom by Democrats, who voted to defund police in 2020 in favor of social programs. Why are their violent crime numbers through the roof in 2021?
Great interview- two informed individuals having a respectful debate. These are the people that should receive attention, not the loudest idiots in the room getting attention just for being loud.
It seems like the latest youngest group of politicians never took a debating class in their education. These two guys talked about a very divisive issue without it becoming a cluster duck. The way debates are now, is if somebody says something that you don’t agree with you immediately have to start talking so that they don’t say anything else that can be understood by the debate audience. You see it in the House of Representatives all the time, when the chairman is telling people that the stenographer cannot take down your words because no one can understand anything that either of you are saying. When you have the floor, you should not be interrupted until you’re finished , or your time is up depending on the format. And the polite debater is going to get stomped all over by the one who doesn’t Follow the rules of debate that they should’ve learned in school. If you can’t debate effectively, how can you be a politician? Because it’s no longer a debate. Everyone gets up there with their talking points to please the people that voted for them so that they will vote for you again. One more thing. I wish it was constitutionally legal to test people about their knowledge of issues before they’re allowed to vote on them. Because the general public is living, just like the politicians are they don’t care about anyone else’s views but their own. Unfortunately, our citizens come out of school, completely uninformed about how the world works…even how their own country works. civics and ethics have been abandoned for “do anything for the bottom line.”

Just this week in Aurora, CO. We had 6 teens shot. Also, they was a gun incident at a HS just a few miles where I live. A school employee noticed the gun brought into the school and dealt with it before anything could happen.

The problem towards make improvements is that people would much rather dive into the most controversial of proposals rather than working to implement things both sides agree on. I was involved in a domestic situation where my then husband was messed up on drugs and wouldn’t let me back in our home to get any of mine or my childs belongings and threatened to hurt me if I came into the house. The police came and literally let him call his mother to come help him leave the house with his guns and our child. They stated it was a domestic issue and they couldn’t stop him. That’s the moment I realized the police would never help me if I needed them. Not long after that he put a gun to my head and threatened me again. I didn’t bother telling the police but I did file for divorce. The system is flawed
But didn't you pick your partner? Character is the last thing people think about when linking themselves to others. And this is from the son of an abused mother. There will always be evil and disturbed people, we have to choose based on better information than sex appeal.

A person who doesn't take drugs now still might end up taking them later for any variety of reasons. If that leads to them becoming addicted and/or abusive, your information about them probably wouldn't have included that *until* it happened.

The last time I was in a gun store buying a gun. The guy in front of me was an ex-convict in his mid 40's with his elderly mother. His elderly mother was buying him a new hand gun. He kept telling her you have to do this you know how bad the people I am around are. The guy selling the gun knew exactly what was going on and all he did was tell them the convict had to quit playing with the gun and that he didn't have to sell it to them. He also said that the elderly women would have to hand him the money and she would have to carry the gun out of the store. This was at Williams Gunsight in Davison, MI. When you have this kind of disregard for the law from those selling guns. I am afraid that adding new laws will have little impact.
This kind of stuff happens all the time. Plus, there’s also states where private sales don’t require any sort of background checks; it’s akin to selling a TV… give me money, here’s your gun.
If I buy a firearm, I figure it’s mine for life. If I were to sell it, it’d be to a licensed dealer.

I think we need clear laws stating that the legal owner of the gun is fully culpable for whatever occurs with that firearm. And the owner should have to sign a form stating that for each gun they buy. Basically unless she reported it stolen, that grandma shoulda been on the hook for whatever her grandson did with that gun. It should be like how get-away drivers in a robbery involving murder are charged the same as the ones that did the killing. Mutual destruction can be a very good deterrent. If the ex-con and grandma knew that whatever he did would equally effect her maybe he’d think twice.
I feel like that puts less onus on the gun store owner (who may worry about the ex-con coming back to rob and/or hurt him if he denies the sale. There could also be an alert or red flag feature added to that fire arms registry. It wouldn’t be perfect but it would be a start.
I think we also need mandatory registration of every fire arm. It’s time to be adults about this. No one should have secret fire arms stashes that the police aren’t aware of. That’s Wild West mentality nonsense that creates a dangerous environment for everyone. They should be treated like cars. No registration? Confiscate it.
This is what capitalism gets us. Gun violence adds to our GDP. It add a lot to our GDP. And law enforcement benefits greatly from it.

wouldn't you expect policing to be the biggest line item in the budget, i mean think of the complexity involved and the risks. Not to mention policing impacts so many other state issues, for example if there's a major fire in a state forest, sure you call the state forestry department but you also call the police to assist, what you're not doing is calling the local teachers.

Hell of a lot of emergencies don't happen when people are well educated. The police turn to public information and courses to pre-empt issues like drink driving, litter, home security and domestic violence and they do help.

it's also worth noting that nearly all mass shooters also have stalking, sexual assault and/or intimate partner violence in their histories so moving the discussion back to preventing them from getting guns for those violations is the best method of preventing those events as well. and if it's only 10 thousand people lying on their ATF forms, they're doing it an awful lot because there were over 112 thousand instances of that in 2017--only 12 made it to court.

The overwhelming and vast majority of cases of "lying on their ATF forms" are people marking that they don't use marijuana when in reality they do. It's rarely lying about felonies (which would show up and flag the background check! whereas drug use isn't kept in federal databases, it's impossible to keep track of) or other more "reasonable" prohibitions on firearms ownership, although I don't believe convicted felons who have done their time and are no longer on probation should have any rights stripped.

This is honestly the best interview and discussion I've seen about gun laws and protocols. Like I actually learned about things, was completely engaged, and the questions and answers all felt genuine and honest. This is how interviews should be done.

I've sadly heard from some officer's, that some officer's actually start a stop watch when they get a domestic call, wait 20 mins. then go to the scene. They would rather roll up on a crime scene after things already escalated then show up and get into the middle of a fight that could end up with themselves wounded.

For those that are dismayed by the conversation, I understand. But THIS interview is immensely important. It's an honest explanation of the uncomfortable details involved with gun violence. What officers deal with. The real world consequences to being restrictive and giving a hugely important avenue for people who want to limit gun violence in their area. Make the current laws more effective, put gun violence in an honest light and restructure the view of guns.

Im watching this almost year later and I gotta give Jon Stewart so much credit that he truly is capable of a master class interview and genuine discussion. It easy to ask questions to make someone feel uncomfortable, but to be able to ask questions that reveal frustrations with existing systems and discussing why and why not current regulations do not work on a professional level while keeping that level of being totally fed up with the broken systems is truly inspiring.
These interviews have been revealing that the people in charge aren't incompetent like we'd like to believe, but simply beaten into apathy or not that eager to change the system because it's the system that allowed them to get to be where they are in the first place

In New Zealand it took 6 days to bring in strict gun laws after the 2019 mass shootings of 51 dead in mosques.
It took politicians on both sides to vote 119 yes to 1 no to strict gun laws.
Over thousands were handed in with payment as compensation.
It's to protect the public and the police as well as they are usually the first responders.

I was a prosecutor in a rural community, until I couldn’t take it anymore. After people having restraining orders or calls to a house with a person with domestic violence convictions, I told the law enforcement officers I worked with “take the guns out of the house”… they would be shocked and say “well, we can’t do that! That’s a federal law, not local law! These guys have a right to their guns”. Then women got shot and they asked me how they could’ve prevented it. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

I think that this is a fairly strong argument for requiring law enforcement to study law, to enforce the law; I think police should at the very least have a bachelors degree in law. It is strange to me that it takes twice as long to train someone how to cut hair and license them to use their scissors, than it does to train someone how to enforce the law with license to kill.
Edit: The general studies will offer much more comprehensive training on speech, debate, and interaction as well.
They do in most countries, if you didn't already know. In some countries it takes 3 years to become a cop. I think in America it takes 3 weeks.
They already can't get enough qualified people to join law enforcement. Adding a college degree, which most people can't afford these days, would decimate the force.
@@leavingitblank9363 it would weed out a lot of the weak; people who get overwhelmed by emotions easily and crack under mental pressure, or people that have stipulations about equality forced to take the (admittedly cringe) world history and humanities studies would be discovered and eliminated, and then the required argumentative writing and debate and psychology coursework in any regionally accredited university would put logic to reason for the purposes of de-escalating a situation.
Frankly, the current system is a failure. It has been for a long time.. As a computer engineering major, I can augment a handful of police with reconnaissance drones and robotic assistance, but what has no solution from an engineering standpoint is barely trained, emotional betas, who think that their position means they are above the public, when as a civil servant they are meant to be beneath the public.
Police do not and never will have the right to be judge jury and executioner (as we see in some of these cases) because making that call requires knowledge of law and passing the BAR and should never be conducted by any parties involved in the apprehension of a suspect, so when I see police performing "verbal kung fu" attempting to get people to incriminate themselves when there is a constitutional precedent to protect people from the same? My opinion is that they are operating in bad faith against citizens at best and domestic terrorists at worst; getting anyone to confess to a crime when under threat is dismissible by court in literally every case but this, right? So who decided to make the rule it was ok by law? Oh, ok, the people who profit off of it, who also decided that murder is illegal for everyone but them and circumvented rules of escalation and gave themselves license to kill through qualified immunity, circumventing the entire legal system.
This system will never recover. It's only a matter of time before it collapses and it is already the case that when crimes happen they do absolutely nothing in most cases because criminals now operate in a 2 minute window, anyway. It needs to be rebuilt from the ground up? Centered around surveillance and information, because no feasible amount of police can be everywhere at once, but drones can be a part of every stoplight, and you don't have to pay them a salary.
I got my cat converter stolen, my window smashed in, physically assaulted, I've had people break and enter.. Ive lived next to drug dens and reported them and they remained active for over a year after that until I moved away. Where were the police? Oh, giving me a jaywalking ticket on an empty road at 3 am. Worthless.

Seeing as it's criminals with guns that are the BIG problem, why not START by increasing the jail time for illegally having/using a firearm from 1yr.(here in NY) to 10 years! Use a gun in a crime and get 50 years...I believe their needs to be more punishment for illegal use of firearms! Plain and simple.

When you sign up to be a cop with the idea your right to go home safely is more important than the rights of the citizens you represent. You are not a cop, you are a vigilante.
I think that’s a pretty heinous way of looking at it. At the end of the day, officers are humans, they have families and loved ones, and it’s a job. Risking your life is part of the job, but that does not forfeit the person in that uniform the right to basic instincts, like self preservation. I’m sure if you had someone in your primary family that was a police officer, you’d think otherwise.

@doof goobins people who study criminal justice academically usually don't become cops because they learn that the system is designed to oppress people and not help them. If you knew more about how it ACTUALLY worked you'd be an abolitionist too probably.
