  • I forgot to show you the planting Pip did in the last video so toady I give you a good update and explain why we do it.
The days getting closer to when I have top take the Scimitar trailer back but first I need to get a few jobs done.
I'm also trying something new this year and instead of culling the empty heifers..I'm sending them back to grazing to try and get them in calf for next season. It just makes more sense

I enjoyed your video and especially the fact that you’re a family man and you, all of that is and the fact that you work with your father makes it special. Please keep these video coming.

Instead of spot spraying where you plan to plant the trees, you might try mulching the spots with sheets of cardboard. If you do, be sure to weigh them down with rocks or dirt clods. Personally, I like to remove the tape and cut or tear a line from the edge to the center then place the cardboard around the tree once I plant it and weigh down the cardboard again. By the time the tree is large enough to no longer need the protection from the grass competition, the cardboard will have decayed to soil. I planted nearly 500 trees this way in the past two years. Good luck. The place is looking great.

Need to watch for Lice when keeping the cows on a yard. In the years ahead with the way things are going might have to consider a covered shelter shed on the spot, where the 'dream alternative farm dairy site was suggested'. The feathered birds like the New Holland, strobe lights in the sheds can sometimes help against that.(the indoor anti-bird lasers are fairly expensive)

Doing a great job around the farm Andrew. Its hard to juggle all the things having a young family and dairy farming. Been there and it was tough! I remember being inside with the babies wishing i was in the tractor but i dont think my partner was wishing he was indside with the babies. Unless it was raining he would lay on the couch and have a nap. 😭😭😭😆

Good stuff, have kept my heifers over some years. And have become good cows. Not all but most have. This time i didn't. 4 empties I sold them, got bugger all. They were little light freisians

Heifers don't all mature at the same time and patience can pay off so well. Rearing a heifer calf costs money and it's great to have a good cow at the end

You could put collars on them to see if they are cycling before you keep them for another year maybe

2 of them aborted so they definitely will and I’m pretty confident they’ll all get in calf 👍

You got some cuzzies on the inside bro 😂
I lived in wiatoa near Te Aroha really nice place my mum still lives near morrinsville
Good to see you giving the heifers another chance hopefully the vet checked them over to make sure they are sound inside but if they have already been incalf already no reason they shouldn't get in calf again

I'm not sure holding those Heifers over is a great idea
You just end up breeding poor fertility through your herd

@@TheOnceADayFarmeryes but if they are empty at the end of next mating you have payed grazing for a year, you know me I don’t carry over any. Just my opinion. Great to see you got the opportunity to plant some your self, plantings are looking great. Great video

The fertility thing is over done, there's many factors that can influence a heifer getting incalf

We have carried over our empty heifers for the last 3 or 5 years. This year is the first time we've had one not get in calf the second mating. She got good money as a fat prime animal at the works. It's not for everyone but I like doing it
