Thanks for these reviews, they really helped with my decision making. I picked up the DV1 base coat and the DV1 Clear coat guns today. I have always had cheap guns and wanted a couple of good quality guns to last me a lot of years. Your reviews made the decision a lot easier.
Hello there Mr, Gunman I just wanted to add to this review. That you never fail to impress me in your videos. It is you that inspires me to do the job just right, so I can come up with results as good as yours. Thank you so much for all what you do. TommyBoy.
You are 100% correct on SATA painters. They are prima donnas just like welders. I brought my truck up to my friends work shop (he works at a dealership) and I sprayed it with my old Devilbiss spray guns, this gun is pre GTI. I believe it is a 1.4 with a 200 air cap. The following Monday my friends had taken it out of the booth and a head painter from the "prestigious" dealership (another dealership lot in another city) was walking around and commented on how flat the clear was. He checked the spray guns and all he saw was the SATAs and Iwata spray guns hanging on the shelves. He didn't see my old guns sitting in the box with the paint I used to spray the truck with. He started bragging about how good SATAs were and how crappy Devilbiss is. My friends told him I had sprayed the truck and if he wanted to hang around I would be there to put the truck back together around noon. I get there and he just kept talking about the SATAs and how good they were. He asked me which one I used and what setting I used for SATAs to get the clear so flat. Then I drug out the box from the mixing room with my old Devilbiss and I was using PPG Deltron paint. I told him I used the 1 gun for both base and clear and my Primer gun for the sealer. He didn't believe me that I sprayed with this old gun and got such a fantastic paint job. Then he started to suggest it was the paint, because he has never got a flat paint job even with his SATA. So I sprayed the bumper, fender and hood on the car ready in the booth, with their paint and my spray guns. It came out a little orange peeled but I had never sprayed that clear before. He left mad. All the money he has spent on the different SATAs and to be beat out by an old well used Devilbiss.
I really love benzes. The first one i painted was a superchrarged amg coupe. I replace the quarter panel and did a color match. Cutting into the metal and seeing the inside made me understand a little more about Mercedes and why they are what they are. This is just the chassis and looks. The engine is another story LOL
I have TE10 for base and T110 for clear , but I do only custom jobs. I have the TE20 and use it once for base but I switched to TE10. yes, T110 has a small fan but uses less air and you have more controll , as Gunman stated in other videos.
I used to have a perfect 280SE, beautiful graceful old thing. Had it for about 3 hrs before someone keyed it all down the drivers side whilst parked in the UWA carpark. The single stage was so thick it polished out by hand :) Just make sure you have very deep pockets if you ever have to rebuild the motor
A part about you I enjoy is that you are in a warm place. I’m in Minnesota where it has been around 10 F for much of the last week. Watching you kind of like watching beach scenes :).
Nice to see you're upscaling video's . You are the reason to give me the confidence for me to spraypaint my campervan 4 years ago. So I feel obliged to keep looking, which is not too hard :-)
Lol Gunny, you said at the end you couldn't see yourself driving/owning one of these cars, I was the same but when I first drove mine that was it, I bought it there and then and exchanged my Mondeo ST for it, I've done a lot of changes on mine including a smart top module so I can control the hardtop and the windows via the key fob, get an SLK mate you will love it, John UK
I agree on the 1.2 tips. Seems to choke the gun but it is a sales pitch to the owners of the shop. Hey you will be saving so much money! Crap. In Canada its all water base now and at present I am using the PPG line which has been quite accurate for me. For the Base coats I use the devillbiss CVI with a 1.3 and for the Clearcoats I still use a Sata 3000 after all these years. Yes it also has a 1.3. I tried the 4000 because it was the flavour of the year but still like my 3000. I for one am Not a Sata guy, I own a couple of Iwata's as well but my Sata has made me money over the years as a dealership refinisher and have never had it rebuilt, repacked or lent it out! lol. Little food for thought as my teacher/old boss told me years ago...Your only as good as your last paint job. Great video keep em coming. By the way you painted the hood on the video, no blend over the fenders?
I heard that SATA was building their guns using a casting method rather than machining them and have lost some quality. Also, I have a minijet 4400 b hvlp; I like it, but it feels like a toy I'm gonna crush it when pulling the trigger. Anyway, I just picked up a DV1 and hoping to get your results.
Thanking your videos always a good tip you gave me in this video as I am from UK cold months I always thought a 1.2 tip was only for smaller panels but I didn't know that I could use a 1 .2 on bigger panels in very cold inviroment so thank you
Hello mate, I really appreciate your videos. I've tried to clear coat a small roof on a Renault Clio with a Ani r160 and I keep getting orange peel. The clear is mobihel with medium hardener, tip is HPS 1.2, temperature is abt 30deg C. I've tried with 10%reducer but it ran in 2 places when I slowed the gun. I really admire your detailed videos but you should emphasize more on hand speed, it makes a huge difference... I mean if you're aiming on the DIY audience... Of course the pros are gonna mock this
I noticed you don’t alter the fan even when coating smaller thin sections like the the front section, why? Don’t you get overspray going on the section you’ve already coated from the edges of the fan?
You never see a bad colour on a Mercedes, however I have no idea where some Japanese colours come from. Then again they do like to bling their cars up especially lexus. That bonnet does look good though gunny
Awesome finish as usual Gunny, I like the look of the DV1 but don't like the price, I've found that my sri pro lite guns are now to small for my changing work so upgraded to the GTI Pro Lite for clear and FLG5 for primer and base, Had to laugh when you said you wouldn't drive an SLK, to camp for you mate! Hey Who is in UK!!!! Where I can colour match the base coat ( good brands)??? If I post tank flap and someone can match it. If anyone know where and who can do it let us know. Thanks
I like your videos, but I wish you would talk a bit about how you lay down such perfect coats, i.e., is it the distance the gun is from the work, is it the flow on the gun, is it how you move the gun in a specific pattern, is it air pressure at the nozzle, is it air pressure at the pump, etc. Many of us are trying to perfect our techniques, and to get some insight from a pro like yourself, would be extremely helpful. Thank you.
I came here to learn how to spray glass on challenging surfaces. But your example was on a hood, laid flat, where gravity does the work for you. Show us how to lay “glass” on doors, possibly ones with challenging dynamics, ya know, where painters tend to struggle the most with controlling their peel This is a flat horizontal surface, now people are like “damn, I need a dv1 and pps cups” then next thing you know they’re broke and still spraying shitty lol
As an auto body painter for 20+ years don't believe the hype around this gun. Yes, it can lay clear flat and achieve great results, but with a few caveats. This gun sprays PAINFULLY SLOW! I've had to change my clearing technique to slow down and paint at the gun's pace as I can't dial it in to spray at my pace. Ain't nobody got time for that!!! If you spray alot of completes or larger projects, AVOID THIS GUN, it won't keep up! The paint transfer @ the recommended 22 psi is also HORRIBLE!!! Went from mixing 12-14 oz. to clear a bumper up to 16-18oz. Might not seem like a big difference, but when you're painting several bumpers and a car and half of another car in a day it adds up real quick!!! Dial the pressure back to 18 or 19 and move in to keep yourself from blowing half your $400 can of clear out the paint booth!!! I've talked to a few painters about this gun. We've all agreed that it's an $800 sealer gun. Ouch.
You’re too good for a Merc. Mercs are an ok fantasy if you’re not paying the repair bills or having to deal with Merc customer service. Terribly bad reliability and support.
