Thanks a lot Michael for your explanation. Let´s see the following example. Where are you now? I am in the reception talking to the manager because my reservation doesn´t appear. In this case, I am using the verb to be, however, I could say: can we meet at the reception in ten minutes? or a I left a book at the reception? Thank you very much for your help.
Yes...that's right. There are times when you want or need to be specific, like (let's meet in the station) or (let's meet at the station). But when being so specific is not necessary, we tend (and that's the key word, tend) to use "in" with the be verb and "at" with other verbs👍
Omg! This video was so helpful to me!! I’ve been living for 4 years in USA and I never knew how/when to use “at” “in” when I’m talking about locations. Thank you so much!!!
Thank you, sir... I'm in class 8... I was having doubt in "in and at"... I'm having English exam tomorrow. It hailed like a divine to me... Concept clear... thank you, sir.
Thanks Michael! You explained v well. Simply we use in when we are nothing special at anywhere while we used At when we do action at some place. For example, where is your bro? I said in kitchen. Otherwise I will say at kitchen for dinner.
Thanks for this video. Before I watched this video, I had not understood the differences between both prepositions, but now I feel happy because I can use them correctly.
I was looking for some explanations that could help me but I couldn't find anything, so, I can say you, thanks a lot for this brilliant explanation, is really useful. I hope that you can continue doing videos like this ❤️
Hello, "We are going to be in the playground" or "We are going to be on the playground" which sentence is correct ? What is the difference between in and on ? Thank you.
+CMV Both are correct. We tend to use in when we just talk about the location or area itself. On tends to focus on the ground - like on the field, on the floor, on the ground. I'll talk about this in a future video. It's a great topic 😊👍
It's not about the verb in that case...we use AT before places like this: at the traffic light at the stop sign at the window at the whiteboard. Prepositions are a huge topic...I know that...and this video just focuses on one aspect. I think I need IN vs. AT part 2
Hello, I am from the Czech Republic and I am not sure which preposition is in the following sentences. He works in/at the hospital. He's in/at the hospital (as a patient). And what about that article? Is it correct when I used "the" or it's without article?
Thanks for your great video Michael, I do have a question though. When you say "I'm at the beach", "I see my face in the mirror", "the dog is at the gate", "are you at the party?", etc. would those phrases be considered exceptions? To be honest, I feel like that's one of the most complicated and confusing things in English.
I think I am going to have to update this video. So.. "In the mirror" is an idiom. The dog is at the gate, I am at the bus stop, etc AT shows the point where someone is. We use AT for events: at a party, at a meeting, at a concert. Thanks for asking!
I am in the street (correct - makes me feel you are standing) I am on street (correct - makes me feel you are moving) I am walking down the street. (this is the correct version)
Thank you very much, Michael. Very useful. I work at a medical clinic. I am in a medical clinic now. Yesterday I had a training at a swimming pool. I am in the swimming pool and waiting for you.
Wish I was taught more about English grammar, vocabulary, and such in my English classes rather than about Shakespeare. I get confused about the language at times even though I'm a native English speaker, and I don't know if my knowledge of Shakespeare is helpful... Anyways, this video has been really helpful, so thank you!
Thank you, sir... I'm in class 8... I was having doubt in "in and at"... I'm having English exam tomorrow. It hailed like a divine to me... Concept clear... thank you, sir....😊😊😊
I still have some doubts that I m having some coffee in the cafe suits well what's the actual difference I can't get it sir is it all about making the sense in question or it is about the action is having in the sentence?
How about that (from Adobe Illustrator Manual)? «If you are extending a path that ends AT a smooth point, the new segment will be curved by the existing direction line. Note. In Illustrator, if you extend a path that ends IN a smooth point, the new segment will be straight»
Hello. I have a doubt, I read this: "We're at The White House as Press Sec. Sarah Sanders briefs reporters amid a continuing feud between Pres. Donald J. Trump and Steve Bannon." why AT ? and not IN ? Thank you :)
Thanks for asking. It's possible that the reporter was standing in front of the White House, so they said "at the White House." We are "in the White House" means inside. But, like I said in the video, native speakers often use in and at interchangeably when they don't have a specific usage in mind. I hope that's helpful.
If our sentece have a action verb we have to use preposition of at. But if we use "be, was ,am , is, are, were or have been" in our sentence so we have to use preposarion of in. . For example: I always watch your videos at my office everyday but i am watching you in my home , right now.. I hope it is ok?
What is the difference I was in the café & I was at the café? When there is an action we say AT. I was having coffee at a cafe. (I've got it) study at a library/ buy at the shop visit sb at the hospital///IN a location-I was in the department store, in a café, in the library/in the hospital
Thanks a lot Michael for your explanation. Let´s see the following example. Where are you now? I am in the reception talking to the manager because my reservation doesn´t appear. Hey! Is the sentence "I'm not that fluent at French" correct?
You have resolve some issues. Thank you. What of an expression like: This seminar will improve the use of English in/at your school?
Thank you! Since it's not the BE verb, I'd go with AT 👍
Thanks for this class! Clear explanation
Thanks, I'm glad to hear that 😀
Hi! Amazing explanation. What about “I am at the station”? Thank you so much
"At the station" seems like in front of the station...."in the station" is inside the station
If it’s past tense, you can you use “at the station”, whereas if you use “in” totally means you still are .
From what I understood is that we use ''at'' when we perform actions but if we use ''to be'', we use ''in'' is that correct?
Yes...that is what we tend to do...it is not the exact rule, but we usually do that.
very well explained. thanks

What about the sentence like I was waiting at the traffic lights. Be verb with at. Is there any explanation for this usage of at?
Thanks
It's not about the verb in that case...we use AT before places like this:
at the traffic light
at the stop sign
at the window
at the whiteboard.

Hi.. thanks for the learning videos,
Home tuition available in manipal[name of the place]
or
Home tuition available at manipal.
which one is correct ?
If Manipal is the name of a place, city, town, etc..IN is better. If it is a company or Building, AT is better.

In an area…because the area has a border or wall

How about that (from Adobe Illustrator Manual)? «If you are extending a path that ends AT a smooth point, the new segment will be curved by the existing direction line.
Note. In Illustrator, if you extend a path that ends IN a smooth point, the new segment will be straight»
AT refers to the place the path ends and IN refers to the style of the point 😃👍
Mind-blowing! So IN refers to the smooth style of that point? Like in «the wall painted in red colour»?
I'm having a coffee and watching this video in my house.
Excellent, thanks 🙏
