This is a more laid back one for me, been carrying a cold for the past week and it just won't leave me lol. I wasn't feeling on top of the world while recording! I hope you still enjoy!! ❤
What do you think Phil should have done instead? Hire a prostitute? If Andy was stuck in the same day, she could avoid being lonely with zero "set ups", it would take her 5 minutes to find a nice guy to bring home. What choice does Phil have unless he wants to be alone everyday?
I have been to Punxsutawney for Groundhog Day on 5 occasions. It is a lot of fun and if you ever get the chance I highly suggest you attend Groundhog Day in person.
there are a lot of theories on how long he repeated groundhog day and even on what finally broke the loop. my favorite theory is 10,000 years on the 2nd and as far as what broke it i think he is stuck on the 3rd now for 10k years
The original script started with Phil already in the time loop. He woke up on Feb 2nd and already knew everything about everyone in the town, and the audience would have to figure out how he knew all of this and what was going on. The filmmakers changed the script because they thought the audience would be confused.
"He's the groundhog, he's Phil, he needs to stop seeing his own shadow" OMG, I've seen this film so many times and I think you just gave a great theory on why his day is repeating. Phil had to get rid of his shadow self before he could move on.
Bill Murray and director Harold Ramis were long time friends. They acted together in Stripes and Ghostbusters, and Harold directed Bill in Caddyshack. Unfortunately, they had a falling out during the making of this movie which they never resolved. Harold Ramis died in 2014. Bill hadn't spoken with Harold since Groundhog Day, something he regretted deeply after his once long time friend passed away.
22:00 "That's not true; I don't even like myself." [. . .] "I kinda believe that." YES! Even though that's passed off as humor, it's probably Phil's first truly honest moment in the whole film.
He also discovered that even living the same day over and over that he had limits. No matter how hard he tried, he could not save the old man's life. Some things can't be changed, even for him. But he could give him some kindness on his last day. Thanks for a nice insightful reaction.
All other external factors were removed and Phil was still miserable. Which means it wasn't others that made him so depressed, it was himself. Who are you going to blame for hating everything when we freezeframe your life and the only thing in it is you? He had to learn to love himself ("I don't even like myself!") before he could move on. And all the stuff he tried at first - money, sex, food, lawlessness - didn't make him happy. Turns out that helping others made him happy, something he was not doing in his former life.
In "Scrooged", he is on the same kind of track. I think, he is in such things deep in his mind. As the German philosopher Goethe put it: "Noble be man, helpful and good..."
They had a calculator trying to figure out how long he relived the same day. And how he perfected speaking other language perfecting an instrument remembering every single thing that’s gonna happen from every person. They calculated it to be 33 years and 350 days.
@@chrisking6667 Originating in a philosophical text, the original idea for Groundhog Day came to screenwriter Danny Rubin and director Harold Ramis from the book The Gay Science, an iconic work from German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche where the writer describes a man living the same day over and over. That’s the description between the 2. They took things from the book. And I was referencing the movie not the book.
The _minimum_ was 33 years and 350 days. I don't think they factored in the time it would take for Phil to lose his sanity and then regain it again with very little, if any, outside help. I'd say tack on at least another couple of decades for dealing with the mental health aspects
Yes Punxsutawney is a real place, where they have the Groundhog Day festival every year. I've never been to it but it's in my state so they show it on the local news.
One thing we have yet to see on screen is a Griundhog type event which affects EVERYONE. So when the day restarts everyone remembers what happened the day before, shut everything is back how it was. I think it would be interesting to see how long before society crumbled - probably in under a week.
A fun little easter egg: The second song Phil plays at the Groundhog dinner is a riff on the theme to "Somewhere In Time (1980)", a film where a young man goes back in time to woo the woman of his dreams.
Ground Hog day is a really old tradition. If he sees his shadow, it's a longer winter. That's based on old farmer wisdom that if it's sunny on Groundhog Day, then additional days of snow are more likely.
The timeframe varies from 30-40 YEARS to 70-80 YEARS for Phil to learn everything he does in this movie. Easily one of the best Bill Murray movies ever (Caddyshack, Ghostbusters, Scrooged, Rushmore!!!). Great reaction!
To draw a better picture... 10.000 days are 27 years, 4 month and a handfull days. So I guess, we are more in beetween 10.000- 15.000 days and not up to 70, or 80 years...
I love that you realized what a creepy person Phil is at first. I’ve seen a few people watch this movie and just kind of pass over that detail, but it’s so important, especially when he’s save scumming his dates with Nancy and Rita (and probably everyone else in town based on him knowing everyone at the diner). It takes him seeing the depths of himself before he can start building a better person in the world, which is he message I took from it. Be a good person and good to those around you, not for personal gain or to curry favor with someone, but because it’s the best way to be. Groundhog Day happens to be my birthday and one of my favorite movies ever made. It’s such an uplifting story despite the suicides in the middle of it. Glad you enjoyed it.
Yes, that's the real name of the town. Yes, they do this ceremony every Feb. 2 (no, it isn't very accurate). And the mayor/boss from Christmas Vacation is Bill Murray's brother Brian.
EvieReacts, I’ve seen this many times. You are the first one to tell me that he might be the ground hog. You are so beautifully amazing. You’re one of my few to notify me. Love you!
I normally hate when a movie or series does the whole "repeating the same day until the lesson is learned" storyline but this film does it so well that I have watched it several times. Great writing and acting.
To be fair, apart from a few unknown movies, this is one of the first. Certainly the first mainstream movie to do it. And so all others, from Edge of Tomorrow to Source Code to Palm Springs, were basically paying homage to Groundhog Day. It's kind of like when people watch Halloween and say, "Not this old trope again!" without realizing that Halloween created the trope.
While this is a great movie, I disagree on great writing. Things would not be the same outside when he is walking out slowly from his apartment and when he is running from the apartment. He would arrive at places at different times, so everything would be completely different. Not to mention that his own change in behavior would change stream of thoughts of everyone around him, so they would not act and talk in the same way every time. But of course, you are supposed to just relax and have fun with this one, without giving it too much thought
He was granted a new life. It took however long required, to cast off the old life and create a much better, kinder more caring individual. I heard it could have been a thousand years of repeated days for this to happen. I love this movie. It's awesome seeing the progression of his character. I've seen it many times, but I always tune in to people reacting to it for the first time. To a person every one I've ever watched absolutely hates his character and winds up enjoying what he becomes. Produced, directed and co-wrote by the late great Harold Ramis. RIP. If you haven't seen it, he even stars along with Bill Murray in Ghostbusters. Great reaction. Do get well soon. Waiting on more of your reviews. As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.
Actually, the groundhog currently has a losing record in the predicting the weather (30-39% accuracy depending on how far you go back. 39% since the1880s). Mayor is Bill Murray's brother Brian Doyle-Murray. 4 of the brothers appeared in the Christmas movie Scrooged!.
Belated thanks for this excellent reaction to a fun movie. I love this, and every time I see it I pick up something new. For a first timer, you get it better than I did in my first half dozen times seeing it. I really empathise with Phil, even at the start. I'm just as grumpy, (although I don't say those things out loud) and I can see myself going through his early reactions. I love the way he got so frantic that he kept getting slapped, and then just gave up. After trying everything to break the spell, I'd do what Phil did and pick up a whole bunch of skills, read everything in the town library, and every house I could break into. Hell, with enough time, even I might learn to play an instrument. I hope that I would see my way to becoming as selfless as he did. Being unable to save the old man would be devastating, though. That's a powerful message that there are some things you just cannot change no matter what. Not so sure about the romantic attraction, though. McDowell is as cute as a button, but that syrupy sweetness would get cloying in five minutes flat, so I guess I'd be trapped in the loop forever.
Fun movie. Enjoyed your reaction and analysis. To bad you weren't feeling well during recording. Phil shouldn't be tricking Rita and at first he probably only wanted to sleep with her. However it's not weird that Phil says I love you to Rita because he's been repeating the same day for years at that point. So he actually fell in love with her. My favorite part is Phil's transformation from a selfish jerk to a guy going out of his way to help people. He goes through dark self destructive times, but it leads to his real transformation. That begins after he stops trying to trick Rita or harm himself, but starts doing and learning things to improve himself and helps others. Eventually Rita was impressed by his attitude and behavior changes. Especially how he's being genuinely kind to others. At that point there was no need for him to trick Rita. She willingly chooses Phil on her own and buys a night with him at the charity bachelor auction. It took many years, but in the end Phil literally became a better person.
I remember being profoundly creeped out by him, given the way he's tricking her. Occurs to me too that, at the end, he's effectively 'lost his 'superpower' and so I hope she's ready for him to become a basic (worse than basic!) guy again.
I heard someone say that the moral to this uplifting fable is...."If you don't grow, you are doomed to relive the same day". We saw Phil grow from a taker to a giver, so that makes a lot of sense. Now that you saw this movie you are ready for a less laid-back Groundhog Day on steroids > "The Edge of Tomorrow", the heroine in that movie is also named Rita (I think that was an ohmage to this film). Thanks, enjoyed watching. 😉
Jungian philosophy teaches that we need to see our shadow-self, the things we fear and hide about ourselves. Only then can we assimilate those things we despise and try to hide from others and be who we really are. Phil needs to see his shadow, come to terms with himself and forgive. Then he can get out of his ever-repeating day. It's a wholesome family treatise on self-analysis.
The guy from Christmas Vacation is Brian Doyle-Murray, Bill Murray's brother. Puxatawny is a real place & they have a groundhog named Phil (obviously not the SAME groundhog) that has seen his shadow 107 times out of the 136 year tradition. This resembles Supernatural's "Mystery Spot". Classic movie. Good choice.
On the surface, it seems like he broke the cycle by being nice or falling in love. But I think what really did it was saying "Whatever happens tomorrow, I'm happy now." He had power, knowledge, even true love the penultimate night, but none of those things broke the cycle because in his words, "I don't even like myself." He was seeking happiness in external pursuits, which made his monotonous lifestyle feel like the same day repeating itself. But once he became happy with who he was inside, he could truly enjoy the next day as well. Until then, the curse was really a blessing preventing him from wasting his life away in misery.
The guy who you recognized from Lampoon Christmas vacation is Bill Murray's brother. He'll show up in a lot of movies and has a huge range. From this guy who's the Mayor to farmer Fred from the Waterboy.
I hope that your cold finally went away and that you’re feeling better. Thank you for another great reaction and, yes, Punxsutawney is a real town in Pennsylvania.
This is such a good movie, and I was very late to watch it for the first time. I was always the only one to have never watched it for the longest time. And this actress playing Rita, such a beautiful and wholesome woman.
there is a saying, I dont know who said it or the exact quote its something like "be careful what you pretend to be for you may become that"...and that seems to be what happened to Phil
Great Movie. Fyi I think the director said the Phil spend 10 years in he loop. Fun fact the mayor of the town is Bill Murray real brother. Also there was suppose to be a scene that there was a witch who cursed Phil but they decided not to put it in and leave it open. Another movie with same time loop story but more serious and sci fi is The Edge of Tomorrow 2014 with Tom Cruise. Other great Bill Murray comedy movies are The Ghostbusters movies and MeatBalls . Other great time travel movies are Frequency 2000 and The Butterfly Effect 2004 .
Actually, in 2009 Ramis (the film's co-writer and director) revised his estimate to "between 30 and 40 years" saying that just based on Phil's piano-playing ability, many accomplished pianists had told him that there was no way Phil could learn to play that well in just 10 years. THEIR best guesstimate for the playing ability he demonstrated was about 15-20 years for a talented child growing up learning the piano from scratch. To adjust that to Phil's situation (Well into his 30s and say, average to slightly above average talent), their best guess was between 30-40 years.... so THAT is the figure Ramis now gives everyone.
Andy MacDowell is the kindest, sweetest, prettiest person. Once while on a late night show, discussing politics, she advocated a mob marching on the US Capitol and killing all of the Republicans. So sweet.
In the scene with Bill Murray and the ground hog in the truck the ground hog actually bit him so severely on the hand he required stitches at an emergency room
@@Metzwerg74 Yeah there's different estimates but he doesn't grow old the town doesn't age. So you have to base it off of how long it took to learn each of those skills from ice sculpting to playing the piano, learning & memorizing every little thing about every person & action in the town etc (some people learn faster than others so 20 to 40 years)
People below recommending other Bill Murray movies, but I want to recommend a really good Andie McDowell (Rita) movie called Four Weddings and a Funeral, also from the early '90s, a wonderful and witty mix of romance and real life. I can't find any reactions to it, you could be the first!
Glad that you picked up early on that Phil is not a protagonist that we should be rooting for in the first part of the film. If Phil was already a good person at the start of the movie then there would be no point for God/fate/whatever to put him into this loop so he could change and become a better person. There's another movie with a similar time loop - Happy Death Day - where the protagonist is not a nice person and is rude to pretty much everyone, but as the film goes on and she tries to solve the mystery of her murder (it's a horror/comedy) she realizes how bad of a person she is and tries to become better.
Phil’s punishment is very much due to karma done by the universe I think. It changed not after that initial good day with Rita because it only had to do with her. Once that was done, he decided to become selfless instead of selfish and only then did the universe release him. There were a lot of rewrites and debates about how this movie was gonna go - originally they were gonna have the story start in the middle of Phil’s predicament and the audience would have to figure out why he knew everything. Also, this would be the last movie this director and Murray worked together on because of many various tensions arising while filming. Only when Ramis was on his death bed, did Murray come to him and reconcile
Laid back one? I wish more reactors were laid back. It's funny when you make a face or look over into the camera. I get it. Some reactors just talk too much; they talk over the dialogue in the movie, so I don't know if you feel you're not talking too much, but I enjoyed the faces and looks. It worked. Ever talk to a friend and something happens where you're standing? You can look at each other and convey a feeling with no words. So again, I enjoyed the reaction a lot.
"La fille que j'aimerai, sera comme un vin, qui se bonifiera chaque matin" --> The girl that I'll love, will be like a wine that gets better every morning :)
The producers have said that he was there for 10,000 years. So that would be 3650000 days. I've often wondered if each of these days branched off into its own alternate universe that continued down that day's trajectory. So there's a universe where the psycho weatherman jumped off the building and killed himself.
That was from an earlier draft, and what Stephen Tobolowski said Harold Ramos has said, but in interviews, Harold Ramis has said that the character was trapped for around 30-40 years. Now, a lot of people have accepted that it was actually around 34 years.
You said you only knew about Groundhog Day from the expression, but did you know that the expression comes from _this_ _movie_ ? Before this film, Groundhog Day was just an obscure minor holiday celebrated in the U.S. and Canada!
Well he was saying something in french I just had a hard time understanding it all on my first watch hahah! after listening to it multiple times he said the girl that I will love, will be like a wine, that will get better every morning.
Why did the old man always recognize him? Wht did he die in different ways? Why did phil call him dad and pop? Why does the bartender seem to know something? Some math foljs on the net seem to calculate, for him to get good at everything he did, plus know people's histories, he was in this loop 33 years. I say, 2 things had to happen. 1. A completely unselfish and happy day. 2. Rita had to give all she had, because she wanted to be with him. Christmas vacation guy has been in slmost all Bill movies, since Caddyshack. He's Bill's brother!!
I love this movie and usually don’t like Bill Murray. I think it’s a zen movie. Nothing matters as long as you find yourself, your thoughts and emotions important. You need to ignore yourself and all that you want. Once Phil realizes this, he’s free.

I love those looks to the camera. 🤣
The actor who played Ned Ryerson has the coolest story about Stevie Ray Vaughn!
I watch this every Feb 2nd. I love the lesson that he can not leave until he becomes a better man 😊
Wouldn't that be cool in real life, you have to repeat everyday until you do it right. Like reincarnation but way more annoying lmao
@@hamzah5643 One day seems difficult, can we make it a week?
Get better soon. Love your reactions.
My favorite Bill Murray film is Quick Change.
Thank you! I do feel a little better :)
Nice cozy Groundhog Day reaction! 🎉 Nice cozy Groundhog Day reaction! 🎉 Nice cozy Groundhog Day reaction! 🎉 Nice cozy Groundhog Day reaction! 🎉 Nice cozy Groundhog Day reaction! 🎉
Do you ever have déjà vu?
I don't think so, but I can check with the kitchen.
The guy who you recognized from Lampoon Christmas vacation is Bill Murray's brother. He'll show up in a lot of movies and has a huge range. From this guy who's the Mayor to farmer Fred from the Waterboy.
He wasn’t Farmer Fred. That was Blake Clark. I could see the comparison. Plus, they are both in so many movies.
@@ryangilligan40 oh wow, now I wonder how many times I have mistakenly thought Bill Murray's brother was this other guy. Thanks for letting me know! 👍
@@jbmopar1971 No problem. I could see the confusion. I’m just lucky enough to be such a pathetic Movie/TV fan to know these things.
Her line in the diner early on tells you how he gets out
"Phil you will never care for anyone but yourself"
Now you can find new appreciation for Supernatural 311 Mystery Spot😊
Funny thing to think about is that from Rita's perspective she's known Phil for like 2 days.
I hope that your cold finally went away and that you’re feeling better. Thank you for another great reaction and, yes, Punxsutawney is a real town in Pennsylvania.
Glad to see your reaction to this great film. Even if it was more laid backed.
More classics please. 😊
This is such a good movie, and I was very late to watch it for the first time. I was always the only one to have never watched it for the longest time. And this actress playing Rita, such a beautiful and wholesome woman.
Andie MacDowell...
I love watching this movie with my mother!
Great reaction! I recommend my favourite Bill Murray film, Quick Change, which is a very underrated comedy from the early 90s.
I just luv to see an Evie reaction video pop up!! Thanks foe doing these for us!
there is a saying, I dont know who said it or the exact quote its something like "be careful what you pretend to be for you may become that"...and that seems to be what happened to Phil
Kurt Vonnegut 👍
Brilliant.
For a different take, check out "Edge of Tomorrow"
This is a good one.
The Grounhog Day festival is a real annual event.
Great movie! DO TROPIC THUNDER PLEASE!!! :)
FUN FACT: Phil was actually stock in a loop for 10 thousand years
Nancy Taylor😍
You're always lovely and delightful to watch. This movie is lovely and delightful and your reaction was lovely and delightful!!! Thank you
Delightful reaction vid 🤗 a very light touch and lots of “ not saying anything 👍….Thank You !….subbing right now.
Fun fact: 'Choking Buster' played by Bill Murray's actual brother, Brian Doyle-Murray.
What I love is that even though Phil became a more selfless and accomplished person, he never lost his sense of humor.
A better Phil, but not a different Phil.
Thank you for the video

You haven't really watched this movie till you've watched it twice back to back in one sitting :P
This movie is really a gem 😂
It would be funny if a reactor would react to Groundhog day every day for a month LOL.
i had an iptv service that one of the like 10k channels was just groundhog day on repeat 24/7/365
*I don't think you realize he live the same day for years it takes years to learn all the things he learned & memorize or learn the skills*
yep about almost 35 years as some dudes calculated... and that is about only the time to learn, so actually it´s quite reasonable it was longer..
@@Metzwerg74 Yeah there's different estimates but he doesn't grow old the town doesn't age. So you have to base it off of how long it took to learn each of those skills from ice sculpting to playing the piano, learning & memorizing every little thing about every person & action in the town etc (some people learn faster than others so 20 to 40 years)
The people that made the movie say he was there 33 years 350 days
A RomCom even men say "wow"
20:10 OK! Finally, can you tell me what he is trying to recite?? I’ve been dying to know since this came out!😂
"La fille que j'aimerai, sera comme un vin, qui se bonifiera chaque matin" --> The girl that I'll love, will be like a wine that gets better every morning :)
@@eviereacts thanks so much! You’re the best
The producers have said that he was there for 10,000 years. So that would be 3650000 days. I've often wondered if each of these days branched off into its own alternate universe that continued down that day's trajectory. So there's a universe where the psycho weatherman jumped off the building and killed himself.
🤣
That was from an earlier draft, and what Stephen Tobolowski said Harold Ramos has said, but in interviews, Harold Ramis has said that the character was trapped for around 30-40 years. Now, a lot of people have accepted that it was actually around 34 years.
You said you only knew about Groundhog Day from the expression, but did you know that the expression comes from _this_ _movie_ ? Before this film, Groundhog Day was just an obscure minor holiday celebrated in the U.S. and Canada!
No way!! hahahah full circle moment I guess! :)
If I were reacting to this movie, I would repost it every day for like a week straight, lol.
I thought this was a good reaction 🥰
"Am I supposed to be rooting for this guy?" Hehe, no.
Classic 😎
Yes, he is the boss in Christmas Vacation and in real life he is Bill Murray's brother!
WHAT?!? didn't know that hahah
Since making his first prediction in 1887, Punxsutawney Phil has been right 39% of the time.
So... what did Phil say if it wasn't really a French phrase? Please explain, Evie!!!! Always enjoy your movie reactions!!! 🎥💗
Well he was saying something in french I just had a hard time understanding it all on my first watch hahah! after listening to it multiple times he said the girl that I will love, will be like a wine, that will get better every morning.
@@eviereacts pretty fitting line actually
the guy you recognized is Bill Murry's brother
Why did the old man always recognize him? Wht did he die in different ways? Why did phil call him dad and pop? Why does the bartender seem to know something? Some math foljs on the net seem to calculate, for him to get good at everything he did, plus know people's histories, he was in this loop 33 years. I say, 2 things had to happen. 1. A completely unselfish and happy day. 2. Rita had to give all she had, because she wanted to be with him. Christmas vacation guy has been in slmost all Bill movies, since Caddyshack. He's Bill's brother!!
The barman shook his head because Phil was acting pusillaniously.
"am i supposed to be rooting for this guy..." no, not yet...
Reacting without overreacting. It's a like from me. More movies, please :D
FYI when I click on your channel and then click video it says "this channel has no videos". I can see your playlists.
I love this movie and usually don’t like Bill Murray. I think it’s a zen movie. Nothing matters as long as you find yourself, your thoughts and emotions important. You need to ignore yourself and all that you want. Once Phil realizes this, he’s free.
