  • FSV49 & FSV50 are growing so fast. The siblings are now 43 days old or right at 6 weeks. Pa delivers prey, possibly prairie dog. Ma comes down from the rails to investigate and to claim, of course, lol! Pa will leave. He was tracking something. Then we have some PS's and warbles (stretching wings over back). Later, F49 nibbles at mom's chest feathers, then vocalizes. I imagine S/he's saying, feed me, feed me, feed me! Eventually, Ma does start prepping Pa's Door Dash prey to give to whomever will claim it. That would be F50, who gets a private feeding. F49 must be stuffed to the gills to not even want a bite. Thanks for watching!

**In case you missed it on Facebook, Mom's ankle band numbers were sent off to USGS. Mom was banded in Colorado in May 15, 2002 at age 45 days. She is 22 years old! Her natal nest is 45 miles east of FSV along South Platte corridor. She has hatched 51 eaglets of which 19 died on the nest, 30 survived to fledge . Thank you Lisa Levesque for posting this information!* The full post can be seen on Fort St. Vrain's Eagle Cam Facebook page.

What does the Fort St. Vrain bald eagle site look like? The eagles' nest (FSV-N0) is 9 x 8 feet wide, eight feet high, and 57 feet off the ground. It has a perimeter of about 26 feet, a total area of about 56 feet, and probably weighs between 2200 and 2700 pounds! The nest is located in a cottonwood on the banks of the St. Vrain River near Platteville, CO, on property owned by Xcel Energy. We’re not sure how old it is, but Bob Anderson and Rob MacIntyre put the first cam system up in 2003, when the nest was already well established. FSV-N0 is built primarily of cottonwood branches (the dominant tree in many river systems out west) and lined with prairie grass. After the primary limb supporting the nest fell in August of 2020, RRP Director John Howe worked with Xcel Energy to put up a new bionic limb and restore the nest. The eagles gave it their seal of approval just a few days later.

    Thanks chickedee64.
How interesting to know the mother is 22 years old from the info. on the legband. That's a long time it's been on her ankle.
Wonder why out of the 50 eggs she's hatched, 19 died in the nest.
Is there cover of any type over the nest?
I don't have FB so thanks for posting here.👍

Ma has laid 3 eggs every year for 12 years in a row.
I started watching this nest in 2021. Pa was incubating the 3 eggs, he and the nest were covered in snow. He stood up, shook out his wings and flew off the nest. The movement caused a chunk of ice to fall from a higher branch and it cracked one egg. A few hours after the first eaglet hatched, Pa was incubating and the hatchling died. I don’t know if Pa accidentally squished it or it was a not healthy. The third egg hatched and survived.
2022 : One egg never hatched. Two eaglets hatched and were doing well. Around 4-5 weeks old, a raccoon got into the nest. The older eaglet tried to defend , but the raccoon grabbed and pulled it off the nest. Ma got there too late.I saw it live. I was yelling and crying. There are videos of the ordeal. Two days later, it came back and tried to get the second eaglet. Ma was there and attacked. It went into a space in the side of the nest (the nest is about 8 ft thick)and Ma spent about 12 minutes beating her wings and lunging at it. I don’t know if she could see it, but it was moving around and trying to escape. There are videos of the ordeal. It finally escaped and we never saw it again.
2023: one egg did not hatch. Two hatched and were doing great. May 10th a bad hailstorm killed one eaglet. Ma tried to cover both eaglets, but they were too big.
