  • “It’s a big love story in the context of Alzheimer’s.” Maite Alberdi, director of the Academy Award-Nominated documentary film “The Eternal Memory,” talks to Desi Lydic about the five-year-long process of making this intimate film about a husband and wife living with the husband’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis, why she chose to tell this as a non-linear love story rather than a story about deterioration, and how this journey taught her first-hand about the importance of integrating people with dementia-related illnesses and their caregivers into society. #DailyShow #DesiLydic #TheEternalMemory

As a Chilean living outside my country, I’m so proud about this documentary! Specially now that I’m facing my life as a caregiver of my husband who is going through some recovery after being in coma for approx. 3 months after cancer treatment for a year.
The film, is giving me energy and love to take care of my husband!

    This documentary souns tantastic!
Both of my parents had Alzheimers during their late 80s and I learned so much about life by intensively being with them during their final years. It was a gift to sing to each of them as they left this life.
Journeying with my parents during their time of advanced age was so very poignant and meaningful.
My dad went from being a cocky, confident, sarcastic Naval aviator and flight instructor to managing a staff of about 60 people to at his nadir telling me he didn't know how to pull up his own pant's shortly after he turned 90. I let him know that that was fine, that I 'got this' for him.
My mom was bedridden her final year, but still remembered the lyrics to Frank Sinatra and sang them a stanza ahead of his record with amazing accuracy. As they relinquished autonomy and gradually surrendered to inevitable physical declines I could still see each of them as an incredible symphony. Their strong, unique personalities continued to express themselves with reoccurring themes, like musical phrases that reoccur throughout the symphony.
Treasure the time you have with your elders. By spending time with them until the end I wasn't at all troubled by their deaths. Rather, this was a natural, gradual and sacred process.

Melissa that was beautiful. I cried. My grandma had dementia due to a series of mini strokes. She was beautiful, compassionate and gave unconditional love. She was a lot of fun to be around. It was hard watching her change. In a moment of clarity, she looked at me and said, "I can't remember anything anymore". I told her I know. I love you and you'll always be my Miss America. I used to call her that. I miss her.

I recommend watching another documentary of Maite Alberdi, it's called 'The Kids' (los Niños) me as a sister of a person with Down syndrome, will be forever grateful for how you show their life, you make me understand a bit more my brother and that's priceless.

Incredible interview, and a pleasure for those of us who know Maite Alberdi. His works are exceptional, but The Eternal Memory is an ode to love in difficult times. I believe that this love, as portrayed in the film and in daily life, dignifies and accompanies those who are in a process of illness as painful as Alzheimer's. The great task is: not to forget those who forget. Congratulations to Maite Alberdi and her entire team!

I don't know everything about this disease, but there are multiple causes and combinations of things that are causes.
The story about those people who got the growth hormone, which I understood as having been taken from a donor that either had the disease or the genes for it, and then the recipients getting Alzheimer's was so sad. I don't think it was any sort of negligence on the doctors part, it just wasn't known that the hormones could transmit something completely unrelated. Hopefully they fully investigate to understand the connection, and what it reveals about Alzheimer's.
My heart goes out to everyone who's touched by these types of diseases.

Jesus was from the future, and he was explaining to them the future in a way that they could understand it, they realized what they were doing was wrong, and Jesus got murdered for it because those in power knew he was telling the truth, he was showing them a new world, the real future, but they had to interpret it in a way that the people of their time could comprehend, that's why there is a lot of metaphors in the Bible

Nothing offensive about unflinching record of devastation managed with love. There's no denial involved - and so no offense.

Given most modern senility is avoidable it’s a terrible disease but the tragedy is our life styles and choices

Wow, are you not getting it. You must have a dead spot in your heart and soul.
I've set up memory units in SNF's as a dietary manager. I've worked with Dementia and alzheimer patients. I cared for my mother-in-law for as long as it was humanly possible when she was struck down with it. I was the last person she remembered out of her entire family.
I helped my next store neighbor when he was diagnosed with Dementia.
Unless you have a better method of dealing with this horrible, horrible disease, speak up. Unless you have worked with people who have suffered with it, please put a cork in it. Doing what that couple did was far better than being forgotten in an SNF. I've seen both sides. I did it for years. You must not have a pulse. You're probably not even alive.

I agree with you -- like losing your mind is such a blessing and opportunity to show devotion? Sure, as long as your former spouse isn't aggressive and wandering busy roads, or hitting you or nursing home staff 🙄
