We didn't think of looking up what 46 & 2 were until after we finished recording so much out of curiosity. In short, it seems that this song revolves around reaching an enlighten state of self consciousness. What do you all think?
Welcome to the Tool family. Listening to Tool is a experience and not just listening to a song. They are one awesome band.
Carl Jung = look him up explains it all !!
Tool Army 4 loif !! 🤘
Now, because of TOOL you feel smarter.
.... just like I did when I learned what it meant LOL
We have 46 chromosomes total, the +2 would be the next step in our evolution bringing us to 48. Hence the reference to shedding skin and bringing about a new change, be it physically or mentally or spiritually.
The term coined for such people are Futants
Yes, it what humans have in chromosomes, there is 42, 44 ,and 46. And two more then you reached totality!!!
Remember the band writes the music. Then when the music is done they send it to Maynard and he puts the lyrics to the music. And in my opinion we get the best band ever.
Goated.
Yup
They deserve their place in musical history.
Goated
When this song was recorded, that may not be the case. I think that is something that evolved later.
@@watchitbendstudios3781 they've discussed it. That's pretty much what they do. Maynard got tired of getting half finished songs, starting to write, only to have the others switch it up. 🤣
ITS about growing changing and moving to the next level of the human evolution and consciousness
It’s about a PERSONAL evolution. People get stuck too much on the 46+2 chromosomes and evolution and stuff. He’s simply using the concept as a metaphor to say “my personal evolution to the next level is just ahead of me”... it’s really about the Jungian concept about Individuation, not about some encompassing human evolution.
^That being said, of course any tool song is about the listeners personal interpretation. So if someone wants to see the “narrator” in the song being some metaphor for all of humanity having to collectively go through our ingrained negative side to progress to a new level, that’s all cool... but I don’t. I really think it’s about a personal journey of shadow integration and individuation to be a better person and to not write so many songs like Jerk Off and Cold and Ugly
Exactly! Much more concise than what I wrote!
Asia is correct on how Maynard writes songs. He writes what he feels when he listens to what the band has come up with, then he figures out how to make the vocals add to the music .
Which is unfair. Maybe they'd like to make music off what he's singing.
Unique and very TOOL.
@@MrGreendayzed
That is his choice so it is completely fair.
@@kylekarcher No. it isn't. he's 1/4th of the band.
@@MrGreendayzed
I actually read your response wrong. I though you where saying it's unfair to him. I get your point
"I'm thinking too hard"
You can never think too hard with Tool lyrics ;)
🎶 separates the body from the mind....
for me, this song has always been an anthem about personal growth, facing my demons and insecurities, and not being restrained by what came behind, but rather being empowered by it. Great reviews guys! Keep it up
Think chromosomes & evolution.
“The premise is humans would deviate from the current state of human DNA which contains 44 autosomes and two sex chromosomes. The next step of evolution would likely result in human DNA being reorganized into 46 autosomes and two sex chromosomes, according to Melchizedek.” (not my words)
Ive been listening to Tool for a long time and I never thought about the meaning of 46 and 2. You have opened my eyes. Top tier comment.
Exactly
@@buzzdlityear644 You really need to rehear every Tool song, with that mindset. Every single word Maynard put down is calculated to the point he strutures his lyris around the different beats, even using fibonacci code to limit his words and putting little hiku poems in between sections. Dudes is a poet in EVERY sense of the word.
In the KJV Bible Melchizedek was never born and never died.. check out Hebrews 7:3.
Dammit! I was close!
Kids from the O'Keefe music foundation absolutely crushed this song years ago. A must watch. Great reaction, yall!🤘
I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU THE KIDS ABSOLUTELY KILL IT AND DO A GREAT JOB ON MANY COVERS
They absolutely kill it and the singer Kala Rose is only 11and the last song that she sang for OMF was CRAZY HORSE and its awesome.
I am stopped at the 5:40 mark right now... I love watching people discover TOOL. The conversation you guys are already having speaks to what this band is trying to do for YOU... Think, reflect, imagine. I have seen so many people react to TOOL and sometimes it takes a while for them to get it and sometimes they don't. You guys obviously do and I am happy for the fact that you guys get to experience it for the first time. I like the rest of the TOOL army are already hooked on your TOOL reactions you guys are shall we say KILLING IT! They don't have any bad songs I promise you guys they are masterpieces. Lateralus/(Disposition/Reflection/Triad)/Invincible/Descending. Keep killing it guys!
Welcome to a truly fantastic band . I have been a Tool fan since 96 . They are just brilliant. Please do Lateralus
46 And 2 is basically the next level of human consciousness. Older civilizations that believe we all share one consciousness are termed 42 and 2. Our current culture is at 44 and 2, a transitional stage of consciousness on our way to 46 and 2.
That's the best condensed way to explain it. Good one.
chromosomes
@@mansonmydogit’s irritating tho. Aboriginal and older cultures like that are made up of Homo sapiens, and all have 23 pairs of chromosomes the same as we do now.
A creature with 24 pairs that evolved from Homo sapiens would not be the “next step”, it would be a new creature.
I really dislike this kind of pseudo-science, especially when it covers up actually important ideas.
one does not "listen" to Tool, you "experience" Tool
In 1996, when this album came out, I bought the CD and cassette tape. Listened to ONLY this album for almost 7 months straight. And it STILL hits me in my third eye and deep in my soul!!!
Two new soldiers in TOOLS ARMY. ✌
That's dumb.
Great reaction guys! More Tool please. “Sober “ live from 1993 will give you goosebumps also “pneuma “ Danny Carey drum cam live is a must
You guys are great. To appreciate Tool on the first listen, that in depth, is a talent. You have wonderful ears for such complex music.
Closing your eyes and opening your mind and just listening to this is exactly how you're supposed to listen to Tool, let it carry you, you'll grow from it 100 percent! Shut your eyes and go there, and they'll meet you on the other side. ;)
Please check out A Perfect Circle - Judith. It’s Maynards other band. The song is about his mom. Phenomenal
pucifer is another great band of maynard's
@@MrFetusPretzel Rev 22:20 or whatever is definitely a fun song lol
When I'm at my lowest feeling the depression and everything, I put on Tool sit in a dark room and just let the music carry me away. I sit there just like Asia with my eyes closed and just experience everything.
Right in two by tool. Hard hitting song
It always makes me smile to see when people hear a song like this one and it drives them crazy because they try to understand the genius mind of Maynard James Keenan. If you like this one check out Maynard’s other two bands Perfect Circle and Puscifier.
There's a video that explains the whole meaning of these lyrics that you should really check out. It's profound.
I second that
Those seem to be taken down on you tube.
Ryan ..this one ..ua-cam.com/video/5vodKWIc638/v-deo.html
My favorite album of theirs. Every song on it is golden.
Just like all their albums. Imo
their reactions display two different brains..one brain going "i love this", another going" i like this, but why?"
Saw Tool live in 2017 and 46&2 is the song I remember getting glimpses of the crowd when the lights would pop during the song and the entire stadium was jamming.
Tool actually needs its own 12 step program. Once you're addicted you can't get over it and the newest album when you sit and listen in the dark on a good set of headphones just takes you to a whole other place
You have now given the TOOL Allegiance what they need while taking the time to appreciate what TOOL has to offer in instruments and Lyrics. Welcome friends! Our grandkids can be 46&2 ahead🤘🤙
I've been subscribed to you two for awhile now, but I have to admit that you're probably becoming one of my favourite reaction channel - type people. Honestly think that you're pretty level headed people. All the best, from Ontario, Canada !!
Tool has a song and groove for any and every emotion or state of mind you happen to be in at any given time
Happy, sad, pissed off, heart broken
But everything is so cerebral
I’ve loved these guys from the 1st time I heard them
ah man yall in for a treat. Wish i could hear it again for the first time. Goosebumps just talking about this. A Perfect Circle. one of his side bands. Absolutely fire. And so real, so heartfelt, so relateable...enjoy.
All time favorite TOOL song!!! Takes me back to my high-school days.
Thank you for the thoughtful intent. I appreciate your appreciation of this music.
It's great to see you guys dive into tool. I was lucky enough to get to listen to them from the very start. To me, appreciating their songs is a layered process. First just the music and tone of the singing. Then reading and researching the lyrics. Finally, putting it all together. Enjoy!
Love your passion for music. And you two are such beautiful people!! Stunning!
Exactly these dudes are on a whole different level
Grand analysis. Yous get it. Looking forward to you experiencing more of their work.
Love listening to music with you two! Yeah, I been loving music for decades but Tool really hit this whole other level. The technical talent of this band is shocking. It's hard to explain if you haven't studied music much but it's all polyrhythms, poly accentuations and complex time signature tricks. Plus fantastic mixing quality that many in the industry have paid respect too. Then you add constantly deep lyrics from Maynard with the minor key moodiness. Oh and don't forget the art. Love your channel. Hope you do more Tool eventually.
One day you will be asked to do (Wings for Marie) and (10,000 Days).
These two songs are very treasured and delicate to TOOL fans.
Maynard rarely to never performs these songs anymore. Too deeply painful and personal.
So true. I would add to make sure you read up on the history of his mother’s illness and listen to the other songs he wrote about it including sounds by his other bands A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. Wings for Marie and 10,000 Days cap off an amazing group of songs chronicling not only her journey but also Maynard’s as they both dealt with her illness, death and moving forward. RIP Judith. You got your wings.
There are three totally different kinds of humans on the Earth, meaning that they perceive the One reality in three different ways, interpreted differently. The first kind of human has a chromosome composition of 42+2. They comprise a unity consciousness that does not see anything outside themselves as being separate from themselves. To them, there is only one energy - one life, one beingness that moves everywhere. Anything happening anywhere is within them, as well. They are like cells in the body. They are all connected to a single consciousness that moves through all of them. These are the aboriginals in Australia. There might be a few African tribes left like this. Then, there is our level, comprising 44+2 chromosomes. We are a disharmonic level of consciousness that is used as a steppingstone from the 42+2 level to the next level, 46+2...These two additional chromosomes change everything.
The Shadow:
In Carl Jung's personality theory, the ego represents the individual's sense of personal self. The sense of personal identity is purchased, however, at the expense of certain tendencies that are rejected as 'not-self'. According to Jung, these rejected traits come together as a kind of unconscious 'counter-ego' which he termed the shadow.
We may become unduly anxious or irritated when in an environment or around a person that in some way reminds us of repressed aspects of our self. If a person has rejected his or her own sex drive, for example, that person may feel irrational fear or anger around an overtly sexual individual. The shadow may appear as a person in one's dreams, usually as an individual of the same sex.
Of all the archetypes, the shadow is the most powerful and potentially the most dangerous. It represents everything about ourselves that we fear and despise.
The meaning of 46 + 2:
According to Melchezedek, our planet is covered with geometrically constructed 'morpho genetic grids'. These grids extend from about 60 feet under the Earth's surface to about 60 miles above the Earth, arranged in geometric patterns “Sacred Geometry”. Each species has its own grid, which supports life, and connects the consciousness of its particular species. Before any species can come into existance or make an evolutionary step, a new grid must be completed. When a species becomes extinct, that particular species' grid dissoves.
A new grid was completed in 1989 - the 'christ-consciousness' grid. This grid will allow humans to evolve into our next version. We'll develop two additional chromosomes (which are really 'geometrical images' designed to resonate with our specific grid) for a total of 46 + 2.
The main change will be a shift to the "unity consciousness". Every cell in your body has its own consciousness and memory. You, the higher being that occupies your body, make the millions of different consciousnesses in your body work together as one being. How does this relate to this grid? Think of yourself as a cell and the grid as the higher being. We will still have individual consciousness, but will be united in the form of a higher being in order to work as one entity.
Wow outstanding explanation you are a true tool fan I'm glad you wrote this so I didn't have to
Will you be turning this in on Monday?
You're a cut-and-past wonder!!
I haven't seen a better explanation for a song let alone a Tool song. Very well said man. I've seen Tool live before amazing concert and the concert I saw was The AEnima tour and Maynard stayed in front facing us the crowd not in the back with his back turned to the crowd. It was incredible. Thx again for your incredible knowledge
*hits joint*
Yep.
Love you guys. Thanks for letting us enjoy your Tool journey with you. Hope you go through their entire discography over time. It can be quite the enlightening experience if you dive in deep. Cheers ✌🏼
I think y’all have been drafted into the Tool Army.
Just discovered y'all today. I appreciate ya. If you keep reacting to Tool, the Tool Army will show up and watch. Tool fans love to see people discover and react to this band's musicality...and try to soak in and understand Maynard's lyrical genius. Peace!
Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990, the group's line-up includes vocalist Maynard James Keenan, guitarist Adam Jones and drummer Danny Carey. Justin Chancellor has been the band's bassist since 1995, replacing its original bassist Paul D'Amour. Tool has won four Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries.
The major underlying principles here relate to chromosomes and Jungian theory. Some of the ideas behind this song are based on the teachings of the spiritual explorer Drunvalo Melchizedek."There are three totally different kinds of humans on the Earth, meaning that they perceive the One reality in three different ways, interpreted differently. We are a disharmonic level of consciousness that is used as a steppingstone from the 42+2 level to the next level, 46+2...These two additional chromosomes change everything."
Carl Gustav Jung German born 26 July 1875 - 6 June 1961 was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who founded analytical psychology. Jung's work has been influential in the fields of psychiatry, anthropology, archaeology, literature, philosophy, psychology, and religious studies. Maynard enjoys Jung's teachings, and he established himself as an influential mind of his time, developing a friendship with Sigmund Freud, founder of psychoanalysis, conducting a lengthy correspondence, still paramount to their joint vision of human psychology. He is highly regarded as one of the most influential psychologists of all time. The shadow, as described by Carl Jung, is the unconscious part of our character or personality that does not align with the ideal version of what we're aiming for, this being the version of us Jung called the ego ideal.
fan of tool since '94 glad a new gen is hearing such wonderful music as you are hearing now!!!!! "MY SHADOW!!!!"
p.s. my favorite song
They both have become fans and dont even realize it.
Welcome to Tool!Everything makes you think. From the art to their Music!Mindblowing!
One of my favorites by them 🖤 Glad you looked up the meaning. Tool is therapy.
(Your hair looks great today Asia 🖤)
Exactly!!! This woman understands
seeing yall appreciate tool warms my heart man. much love.
30+ years of this TOOL journey, love hearing your take while tooling with you!
"I feel this music puts me in a zen..." PERFECT!🤘🤘
Tool song all have very very deep meanings you have to research there many levels and layers above the unbelievable music
The name of the band is Tool - from their first to their latest album the anger has given way to introspection - Maynard once said don’t think noun when you hear Tool think adjective
I love how BJ feels rock music, he just grooves to it... And Asia is very in tune with the vocals and lyrics; they say if you decide to learn a musical instrument you play what you hear the most.. I became a bass player " I'm terrible with lyrics" I never can understand what people say when they sing..
Found out in college that this album very loud in the headphones had almost the same stimulant effect as the adhd meds they tried to prescribe me. Wrote a 180 page paper in one night the day before it was due and passed the class thanks to this album 😅
The "Shadow" refers to a concept of Carl Yung and how Man may evolve through Ego death.
Y’all got it exactly. It’s so
Awesome to see y’all get
It on the first listen.
Subscribed for Tool.

Tool Playing Live in Denver Colorado USA, January 2022. Tickets cost from 150$- 400$. Gonna be a Great Show. I'm there🤘😎
Ya'll did a fine job on this one! Tool's music has a lot of layers to it and everyone can enjoy the different layers. Most people wouldn't know what the reference to 46&2 (chromosomal) meaning is, but you totally nailed the essence of the song. The essence is about growing past your fears and selfishness, allowing yourself to evolve, and you two sensed that perfectly.
Watching people fall in love with music is beautiful
Asia nails it. Glad you all checked this song out. Fun watching you all.
Masterpiece... Thanks for sharing
tool is beyond amazing. You don't listen to Tool, you experience Tool. They are so far above everyone else
It's awesome that you guys looked into this and seriously listened. Most of us didn't have the damn internet back then and if you did, they didn't give you any idea of what they were specifically talking about or give you lyrics.... But that's the point... “Think for yourself... Question authority”. It's a TOOL to look into your inner-self to become the best you can be. The metaphysical perspective they're talking about in this song is simply from a book where humans evolve to the next level of consciousness. 2 more chromosomes to reach another level of consciousness. We have 46... Next level +2, but the idea is much more. Obviously, individually we can't do that but collectively understanding that the goal for humanity is to see beyond the superficial life we live should be the goal. That's what they speak about... Whether you see it as angry or not (anger tends to bring people in rhough), the final message is something beautiful. They planned this work of art from step one in my opinion... See the EP OPIATE (it's addictive... Kinda gets you hooked;) The first song says “seems like you've been here before... Seems soo familiar... seems like your slipping into a dream within a dream”. For whatever reason, it does sound familiar and it did feel like I had been there before... Why, I don't know, but think about the albums’ names at face value... There was a plan. Oh yeah... and they're pretty unique artist too.
I heard listened to this song so many times. Not to take away from the song. My friends dad owned a dodge shadow in 98. We used two 12volt batteries to use an inverter to play his home theater system in the car. The paint was peeling off. Shedding skin lol.
One of the best bands in the world. Glad y'all are getting into them. 🔥
You guys are kicking some butt with your reactions. I'll be here to support and push that like button. Keep grinding. ❤
Your analysis of Tool and your appreciation for what they created is shared by many
I love that you guys intuitively get Tool. Keep going!
Welcome to the spiral. Tool is another level. Love you guys reviewing Tool. Pls do more.
Incredible tune Toolarmy ☀️
Tool is one of those bands where each of their songs should provide a reading list, This one for instance is heavily influenced about the ideas of Carl Jung the shadow self, Tantricism, Kafka's "The Metamorphosis", and Human genetics (44 & 2 IS US NOW, 46 AND TWO IS THE NEXT STEP IN EVOLUTION) . What amazed me about Tool, was realizing there was a band that had read the same crazy shit I did. Tool, is thinking man's metal.
They're low key tool fans and I love it
"Introducing you to yourself." Yes, I agree.
great reaction, hope you continue to dive deep into the tool experience, you will not regret it! spiral out.................................
Nice review! Really like you guys. Keeping rocking.
One dynamic to focus on when listening to TOOL is how the Bass Guitar and Drums work together. Then listen again at how the guitar fits in...THEN listen to the lyrics. One dynamic that TOOL has mastered is if you listen to any of their songs, each instrument is playing an entirely different thing at times, even the vocals, Maynard (vocalist) times his lyrics as well, but when you zoom out and listen to the song as a whole...it all fits together. These guys are amazing artists. I hope you both explore more of their songs. Its a requirement to listen to their songs a few times...so much going on in them
You would be amazed how many people in music are advocates for mental health. Disturbed, Pearl jam, Godsmack with the scars foundation.. you guys should check out Godsmack, the song "under your scars" it is a deeply amazing song and don't be ashamed if you get teary-eyed
My new favorite channel. Please do more tool . The tool Army will help you out . Continue the journey, stay curious.
We currently have 46 chromosomes and the song is talking about us getting two more thus 46 and 2. Its the jungian theory actually.
Kind of correct and kind of wrong. We currently have 44 autosomes and 2 sex chromosomes. So yes we have 46 chromosomes, it’s currently read as 44&2. It’s believed that the next stage of evolution would give us 46 autosomes and 2 sex chromosomes, thus the 46&2
Tool is in my top 5 of all-time. So unique and good. You can't say another band sounds like Tool. My favorite groups of all time are ones that set themselves apart like this. Been loving these guys for over 25 years. That's fucking crazy to me, I still look at them as new and cutting edge.
Lots of bands sound like Tool. There is only one Tool though.
There's a video of this song that explains where the song comes from, what it means and it's relationship to the writings and philosophy of Carl Jung.
Tool are masters at putting you in that meditative, zen state. "Reflection" is, IMO, the best example of that (many will insist that you listen to the whole Disposition-Reflection-Triad trilogy, which is great if you're ready for 22+ minutes of listening!) Also the Parabol/Parabola combo is another example with a similar vibe. There are some good lyric videos out there that you might want to try for these tracks to make it a more fully immersive experience.
More Tool!
Hell ya!
Love the reactions you two. 👌
Y'all gotta do Dax - The Next Rap God 🔥
Alot of this album is based around the theme of Carl Jungs 'The Self'. But in Tool fashion as to not take things to seriously it also sprinkles in alot from a book titled "Nothing in This Book Is True, But It Is Exactly How Things Are." This song particluarly discusses the idea of Jung's Shadow and what Drunvalo Melchizedek refers to as the dimensions of reality. If you don't know who the latter is than you won't get the lighter side of this serious subject :)
Tool is the deepest of the deep lyrically. But musically they are so above and beyond, you don’t need the lyrics.
Maynard is crazy deep and extremely intelligent. Musically outside the box thinker. Combined with the excellence of the rest band gives tool not only a sound but experience that will send you to places on your mind that you did not know existed.
I didn’t notice your shirt until the song was almost over. I love it. Respect to the Almighty demonstrated. Great job on the analysis and feedback to both of you. Thanks. Keep doing your thing.
thanks guys :)
keep em coming :) :)
What Tool make is one step above music.
Close your eyes hold on music lay back in your chair lock the doors ! I am so relaxed after this music feelings ! Yeah I feel good !
The band name Tool is what really describes their music as a Tool to your third eye and self enlightenment, the band is not religious but they’re spiritual.
I use tools for work. I can use my hammer to drive a nail, pull a nail or change somethings position. I can build, tear down, or modify with my hammer. Always loved the band and their name. They named their band Tool to suggest that the band was just an instrument to convey a message. They can build an idea, tear down a belief, or change a perception.
They thought of toolshed first but liked the sound of tool alone 👌🏿
Welcome to the family! Next you have to see them live!
Another great review. Loving these! But just so you know, not all of Tool's songs are so ambiguous and open to interpretation.
A handful of their songs are about lead singer Maynard James Keenan, particularly how his mother suffered a brain aneurysm when he was only 11 years old ("Jimmy") and his subsequent struggle not only watching the person he loved most in the world basically disappear before his eyes (while still physically being there) but also trying desperately to reconcile how she could still be so devoted to her Christian faith when God "let this happen to her" ("Judith," performed in his other band A Perfect Circle).
But you don't have to go in order. You guys will love "The Patient, which I hope you do next, as it is Maynard's best guess at the inner monologue inside his mom's head, as a literal patient forced to remain patient. Powerful, beautiful, yet haunting song, and so underrated. "Jambi" is another banger about his mom sandwiched in there that you guys will love.
Finally, and this one always chokes me up (as it does for most), the conclusion of his deep, cathartic exploration into his mother's slow and steady decline culminating in her death many years later is captured in a two-part sendoff, of sorts, with Pt 1: "Wings for Marie" and Pt 2: "10,000 Days." Heavy, heavy material, but the band's vast array of talent is on full display, and it's quite possibly the most heartbreaking love letter to a mother in song form I've heard in 40+ years of life.
Enjoy and keep up the great work!
Beautiful shirt BJ!…can tell both of you are beautiful inside and out.
Tool is brilliant . Nobody is like them . Welcome to the Tool Army
I can see when the music touches your souls
Literally the beat interpretation I've seen on a tool song on you tube. I've known tool fans that dont get it as well as you two.well done
First, the music is typically written in advance, and the Maynard writes the lyrics later. Next, look up the 46 & 2 lyric video that has the explanation of the song along with it. It has both the lyrics of the song and then the meaning/explanation behind the lyrics. It sums up the song very well.
