Personally, I think the album version has a crisper, more fluid sound, and I prefer it... but the solo in this song is one of the best Strokes solos, period. If some audiophile wizard could somehow shimmy this solo into the album cut and make it all come out sounding natural like... If.
I think it sounded too similar to the outro of sixteen blue - the replacements. Which i believe they took the melody in the chorus from in the first place.
I bought the Modern Age EP when I was 17 from Piccadilly Records in Manchester 17 years ago (!!!!), and still get the same tingle of excitement now, as then, when hearing this song, which is a million times better than the Is This It version. Thank you for uploading it
The chorus is my favorite part of my song and it just doesnt work in this version because the order of the lyrics. If it wasnt for that THEN it would be way better than the album version.
Broedy Bessette No he's right, just because this is the "first" version doesn't mean it's better than the album version. Lyrically, it flows much better than this one, but this one has an energy that the album one is lacking. If they had just added the solo on the album version, it'd be perfect.
this solo is seriously amazing, but the structure on the album version is so much better. also “i took 5 dollars won’t get me far / my last resort is to steal your car” is perfect, don’t know why they would take that out!
The solo break in this song--removed for the album version--is one of the best musical segments the Strokes have ever done, IMHO. What does it say about them, their producer, the record industry, the public that they took it out?
...after exhausting their catalog--the record that kicked it off!...well, it was orange-yellow-black and on Rough Trade but the songs are the same three tracks. Did I mention Julian Casablancas is a legend?
Lyrics: I didn't take no shortcuts I spent the money that I saved up Oh, Momma running out of luck Like my sister, don't give a fuck Oh his strange manners, I love 'em so I wish you'd wear your new trench coat I don't show up on weekdays That's something that you learned yesterday I just want to misbehave I just want to be your slave You ain't got nothing I want, but I want it all I just can't figure out Nothin' I wanna steal your innocence To me my life, it don't make sense I took five dollars, won't get me far My last resort is to steal your car Drive you to work; you'll be on time These little problems they're not yours and mine Come on and listen to what I say I've got some secrets that'll make you stay I just want to turn you down I just want to turn you around Oh, you ain't got nothing I want, but I want it all I just can't figure out Nothin' And all he said is, I'm a freak He ordered them to make mistakes And all together it went well We made pretend we were best friends Today the day that I was born He won't leave me alone he keeps asking for more Together again, like the beginning But for the record it's between you and me I wanna steal your innocence To me my life, it don't make sense Oh, his strange manners I love 'em so Why won't he wear his new trenchcoat? I didn't take no shortcuts I spent the money that I saved up Oh, Momma running out of luck Like my sister don't give a fuck I just want to turn you down And maybe later I'll turn you around You ain't never had nothing I want, but I want it all I just can't figure out Nothing And all he said is, I'm a freak He ordered them to make mistakes And all together it went well We made pretend we were best friends Today the day that I was born He won't leave me alone he just asks for more Together again, like the beginning I said it's between you and I
Lyrically, i like the album version better, but overall i think this one is way better. i like how they end with the chords after the last line instead of ending right on the last line haha. Barely Legal is definatly my favorite song by the Strokes, anyone else agree?
I love this song because it's called Barely Legal and Julian says "I wanna steal your innocence". I really wish I could ask him what it's really about, like the "why don't you wear your new trench-coat" line. If you are looking for new music influenced by The Strokes, try searching The Stumble and Shake - Panic Attack (earthquake Version) you may be in for a surprise!
This is 5 years too late but this song is about an older man dating a girl who’s like 18. It may possibly be inspired by Julian’s dad John who got caught with a 16 year old
@@dustinvoid3922nah it’s about his dad and his relationship with younger girls, you’re thinking about this too deeply… all the songs are about sex on this album lol

the solo in this version is fucking brilliant!!! why the hell did they ever change it?!
Well now you have 2 versions which are different but both brilliant
I think it sounded too similar to the outro of sixteen blue - the replacements. Which i believe they took the melody in the chorus from in the first place.
@@madocbarran1734no one knows what they took inspiration from but I can tell you that those 2 songs have nothing to do with each other.
I really like this version better. Was 17 when I heard it so it's ingrained in those awkward awesome teenage years =]
This is the version I heard for a while before ever owning the album so this is how I sing the song etc. Thank you Limewire

If they had taken the solo from this version and added it to everything else about the album version, that would be amazing.
You're just used to hearing it that way, it'll grow on you!
Broedy Bessette No he's right, just because this is the "first" version doesn't mean it's better than the album version. Lyrically, it flows much better than this one, but this one has an energy that the album one is lacking. If they had just added the solo on the album version, it'd be perfect.
I heard this version first and I prefer this version, I didn't even know of the other version until I looked for this song on Spotify.
@@enzobaldwin6121someone added the solo to the album version:

my guess is he says 2 five dollars
This version captures the old garage rock feel perfectly
Strokes solos are so satisfying
I like both versions. But this one is just so hype, dance, and rock & roll
One of the best solos I"ve ever heard
Yeah, I think the same. When I got their album I had to listen to this again to make sure I didn't imagine it. :P
The solo break in this song--removed for the album version--is one of the best musical segments the Strokes have ever done, IMHO. What does it say about them, their producer, the record industry, the public that they took it out?
Tony Detroit the song is much better with it in it. frustrating.
Tony Detroit slight exaggeration there
They pretty much called the shots on their full album, so it was probably an artistic decision by the band
Spot on, my friend!
...after exhausting their catalog--the record that kicked it off!...well, it was orange-yellow-black and on Rough Trade but the songs are the same three tracks.
Did I mention Julian Casablancas is a legend?
When was young i downloaded this version first of all. I didnt understand why they changed this perfect song for the album.
Heard this version first, like it better than the other one.
That solo it's a little bit like "Television" (band) just like Julians look in the 2000's, am I wrong?
This is such a great version!
Lyrics:
I didn't take no shortcuts
I spent the money that I saved up
Oh, Momma running out of luck
Like my sister, don't give a fuck
Oh his strange manners, I love 'em so
I wish you'd wear your new trench coat
I don't show up on weekdays
That's something that you learned yesterday
I just want to misbehave
I just want to be your slave
You ain't got nothing I want, but
I want it all
I just can't figure out
Nothin'
I wanna steal your innocence
To me my life, it don't make sense
I took five dollars, won't get me far
My last resort is to steal your car
Drive you to work; you'll be on time
These little problems they're not yours and mine
Come on and listen to what I say
I've got some secrets that'll make you stay
I just want to turn you down
I just want to turn you around
Oh, you ain't got nothing I want, but
I want it all
I just can't figure out
Nothin'
And all he said is, I'm a freak
He ordered them to make mistakes
And all together it went well
We made pretend we were best friends
Today the day that I was born
He won't leave me alone he keeps asking for more
Together again, like the beginning
But for the record it's between you and me
I wanna steal your innocence
To me my life, it don't make sense
Oh, his strange manners I love 'em so
Why won't he wear his new trenchcoat?
I didn't take no shortcuts
I spent the money that I saved up
Oh, Momma running out of luck
Like my sister don't give a fuck
I just want to turn you down
And maybe later I'll turn you around
You ain't never had nothing I want, but
I want it all
I just can't figure out
Nothing
And all he said is, I'm a freak
He ordered them to make mistakes
And all together it went well
We made pretend we were best friends
Today the day that I was born
He won't leave me alone he just asks for more
Together again, like the beginning

Gotta say.. love both versions
solo version ep >> album. But I prefer the lyrics of the album =)
Una obra de arte, Antes del is this it, belleza.
Have they ever played this version in concert, besides before and shortly after the release of this EP?
This just has a feel (and an epic solo) that isn't on the album version but both are amazing nonetheless.
just wonderful

caleb terr the entire band did all the drugs in this era. AHJ said in an interview that just he was spending almost 2k a week on drugs.
Not even, this version of the song is worse compared to the actual song on the album.
This version has a guitar break at 2:20. The album version emasculates the song. Pitiful.
