I love Orla's voice. It is so beautiful and she sounds like an angel. She and Meav are my favorite members of that group. To me both of their voices are like angels from heaven.
Orla sings this beautifully... words cannot express. Sad b/c she nor Meav are no longer with Celtic. Missing them very much, especially b/c Orla has an outstanding Celtic voice.
In case you're interested, Orla sings Siuil A Run on her single cd("Orla") & the "I wish, I wish, I wish in vain" verse is on that cd(the "But now my love has gone to France" verse isn't). The single cd came out a few years ago. You can still find it in music stores or online, along with the single cds of the rest of the girls.
I think she's my favourite singer out of the bunch. She's got the Celtic Woman vibe and a great voice, very celtic. But I ve got to say the best person who ever sung this was Enya when she was in Clannad.
The last 2 verses:"I wish, I wish, I wish in vain, I wish I had my heart again, & vainly think I'd not complain." "But now my love has gone to France to try his fortune in advance. If he e'er comes back, tis but a chance."
[Chorus:] Siúil, siúil, siúil a rúin Siúil go sochair agus siúil go ciúin Siúil go doras agus éalaigh liom Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán. I wish I was on yonder hill 'Tis there I'd sit and cry my fill Until every tear would turn a mill I'll sell my rod, I'll sell my reel I'll sell my only spinning wheel To buy my love a sword of steel [Chorus] I'll dye my petticoats, I'll dye them red And 'round the world I'll beg my bread Until my parents shall wish me dead [Chorus three times]
I also sing but I could never sing like Òrla and Mèav. They both are so amazing and extremely talented women. Both Òrla and Mèav have such an amazing vocal range because they can sing much higher than I could ever sing. I love all of their songs but I especially love how Mèav sings Dulaman and I love how Òrla sings Siuil a Run.
I love this song... Absolutely beautiful. I know there are many nights when I share the sentiment with the girl in the song, which makes it mean even more to me.
These women have a gift from none other than our lord , they make my heart wont to sing with joy Breath thanking beautiful , Thanking you for sharing this with us
Orla has a real celtic dream of a voice, listening to her transports me to Mayo, my favourit place on earth. I just think she isn't comfortable with the dancing malarkey. she is a singer, thats what she excels at, leave the dancing to those who can't sing.
When I dirst started watching Celtic Woman I didnt realize just how amazing Orla was until I heard 2:23 - 2:33. At that moment I realized she was one of the most amazing singers I've ever heard. I still feel that way to this day. Every single one of her songs is brilliant.
This song is like listening to a dream...it rushes in, sweeping you in with hopes and memories and things that might be, with the bittersweetness that comes from knowing even a perfect moment can't last forever. It just makes me feel that way...but here at least, I can hit the replay button. : )
I've heard her live...and no...not a concert like this, it was at a relatives wedding (I don't know her but luckily we know mutual people) and she sounds THIS good in person...no professional equipment-and no mike at the wedding either!
@Celticfan1927 Just keep practicing ^^ When I first started listening to them, I couldn't speak a word of Gaelic. But if you look up the lyrics and just keep trying to sing along, you'll get it :)
I find it interesting so many veterans have written in here... as a vet myself I find this a sad and tragic song, about a man sent off to fight elsewhere, and his woman wanting nothing more than to sell what she has so she may buy him the best weapon possible at the time. A beautiful song... And yes, this brings tears to this 'Armored' guy also.
@simplystreeptacular She sings some songs from her "water is wide" and "distant shore" albums, and some other songs like "two sisters" I can honestly say that her concert was my favorite concert I've ever been to. When she sings, it's like you've known eachother for years. have fun!
A stunning performance by Orla and everyone involved! But please upload again at a higher resolution - when UA-cam was started all those yeares ago, 240p was normal, but this is such a beautiful production it needs at least 480p, and preferably even higher, to do it justice!
I found a couple of translations for the chorus a few years ago. One is: "Come, come, come my love, come to me & softly move, come to the door & away we'll flee. & safe forever may my darling be." The other translation is: "Go, go, go my love, go quietly & go peacefully, go to the door & fly with me, & safe forever may my darling be." I found these 2 translations online but I don't know how accurate they are. BTW there are also 2 more verses to this song that Orla didn't sing here.
I had to sing a song at a solo & ensemble competition that had grace notes, and it's really hard to control your voice through them. They come and go so quickly.
@aaron1mcdonnell The line "I'll dye my petticoats red" is a subtle reference to prostitution. Red is a cheap dye that often was the only color that prostitutes had, and thus red petticoats were representative of that. The general consensus is that the song might have referred to the Wild Geese, that is Irish soldiers that left to serve in continental armies, usually Spanish.
Thanks for that. Its such a lovely song, even more so when you understand the words. One of my favourites. I even got my friend hooked on this song. Its a bit sad especially since he'd gone to war & she'd be suffering from hardship. Also like the LOTR version & Robinhood. (composer Thomas? Hardiman) I didn't know about gaeilge which one would be the older language? cheers :)
@danielle1995715 Siúil a Rúin" is a tradtional Irish song, sung from the point of view of a woman lamenting a lover who has embarked on a military career, and indicating her willingness to support him. The song has English language verses and an Irish language chorus, a style known as macaronic. The title translates to "go, my love" (or variants): siúil is an imperative, literally translating to "walk!", a rúin is the vocative of rún, a term of endearment. ~Wikipedia
I'm a singer, and if I tried to do any movement to make myself more interesting to watch, I don't think I would be able to do it with the same sense of spontaneity and grace that they do. They might do this because the conductor and the whole entire orchestra is behind them, and she's giving them a visual as to how she's counting the beat with them. I mean, she can't really start snapping her fingers to show them how fast she's feeling the rhythm, you know? I think it looks great :-)
I love Celtic Woman, but I wish they sang all the verses of the traditional Irish songs! The most haunting verse of this : I wish, I wish, I wish in vain I wish I had my heart again And vainly think I'd not complain Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán They left it out! Ahh heartbreakk.
So Siuil a Run is gaelic for Walk my love??? I have found all your comments very helpful. The more you look the more you learn. Enya one of my favourites.
@RivenrockGardens i know two songs i sang in choir that would go well with this song: "Johnny has Gone for a Soldier" (sung by the girls) and "In Flanders Fields" (sung by the boys). i cryed harder when the boys sang, than i did when i sang our song......
@gaeilge101 Other regional variations of the name in modern Irish dialects include Gaedhilic, Gaeilic, Gaeilig or Gaedhlag in Ulster and northern Connacht, and Gaedhealaing, Gaoluinn or Gaelainn in Munster.
Actually the tone of all of the women's voices is very common for professional singers who have the type of voices they have. The pure tone comes either from training or from young age. And with Celtic songs it is very hard to modulate the voices because of all the grace notes that are used that make the music so beautiful. She has had years of extensive training and those with that can also sing without having their breathing audibly heard. I'm not criticizing you, just informing.
@pinkcottonfly Gaelic is a language family, one of the two extant branches of the Celtic language family. Referring to Irish "Gaelic" is like calling English "Germanic". The Scottish Gaelic language is often called "Gaelic" because "Scottish" can also refer to their English dialect or the Scots langauge(a very divergent dialect of English). Ireland does not have that ambiguity, their English dialect is called "Hibernal English" and they have no third language. So it's just called "Irish".
how on earth can anyone dislike this song?!
Orla's my favorite Celtic woman...I always thought her voice carried the true celtic spirit more than the voices of the others.
HuesOfHazel yeah, her and Eaba McMahon are both great, and similar!
I love Orla's voice. It is so beautiful and she sounds like an angel. She and Meav are my favorite members of that group. To me both of their voices are like angels from heaven.
these ladies always make this irishman who is a former navyman cry with joy as well!
There is a reason the first performance of Celtic Woman was this song with Orla. She is on a completely different level.
Orla sings this beautifully... words cannot express. Sad b/c she nor Meav are no longer with Celtic. Missing them very much, especially b/c Orla has an outstanding Celtic voice.

Orla is a one of a kind talent, and one of the best vocalists ever to sing as Celtic Woman!
Orla is THE Celtic Woman.
Orla is SO beautiful. Celtic Goddess, I'm not worthy!
I love this song... Absolutely beautiful. I know there are many nights when I share the sentiment with the girl in the song, which makes it mean even more to me.
This has always been my favorite song. Even as a child it made me cry, and nothing has changed. ^..^
These women have a gift from none other than our lord , they make my heart wont to sing with joy Breath thanking beautiful , Thanking you for sharing this with us

I love when she sings this song... I cannot describe it very well.. It is just holy to me
When I dirst started watching Celtic Woman I didnt realize just how amazing Orla was until I heard 2:23 - 2:33. At that moment I realized she was one of the most amazing singers I've ever heard. I still feel that way to this day. Every single one of her songs is brilliant.
I highly enjoy this song.
what a story this song tells what a colorful picture it paints...she must have raven locks skin like ivory and eyes black as night.
All of their music is so wonderful and meaning ful that you can feel it in your soul. I love this song.

This song is like listening to a dream...it rushes in, sweeping you in with hopes and memories and things that might be, with the bittersweetness that comes from knowing even a perfect moment can't last forever. It just makes me feel that way...but here at least, I can hit the replay button. : )
OH, yeah, the Celtic Womans version beautifully sang too!!!
Just Great!!!!
One of my favorite Celtic Woman songs!!!
This has long been one of my favorite pieces by them... I love how richly the language flows... (Makes me wish I spoke it, actually... or sang it...)
She has such a beautiful voice.
You're right!
I think it's great!
She's very good.
This is a beautiful song! Whoever said she was lip-synching is jealous that he/she doesn't have this beautiful of a voice, you know? ;]
this has to be my favorite song sung by Orla, brova :D i love you Orla
I've heard her live...and no...not a concert like this, it was at a relatives wedding (I don't know her but luckily we know mutual people) and she sounds THIS good in person...no professional equipment-and no mike at the wedding either!

She actually sounds even better in the higher quality!!

+1 vet
This is gorgeous.
Musical relevance TBA.

Orla is my favorite. :)

She is fucking brilliant!!!!!

I agree.
I find it amazing that anyone can sing grace notes. they are hard to play even on the piano, unless you have very fast fingers.
good lord, this is so beautiful!!!
Thanks for that. Its such a lovely song, even more so when you understand the words. One of my favourites. I even got my friend hooked on this song. Great version.
The one I'm most familiar with includes the refrain "Johnny has gone for a soldier" at the end of every stanza.
0:01 Suddenly i have a new favorite song!
I was in the audience during this song
gotta be the water that both Orla and Lisa drank back in Ireland! LOL
congrats to Orla and Lisa's about to have hers! sweeeeeeet!
I wish I could speak that language... this is very well done. ^_^

Didn't know this, I always wondered what this song is about
Thank you - a really wonderful piece
This is quite possibly the most amazing version of this song!
as it did for me. im just startin out :)

I think it looks great :-)
Check out "Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier"; love how these tunes travel...evolve. Beautiful.
@bigsis314
I'd say "Walk my love," but since it's in another language it's not perfect.
I love Celtic Woman, but I wish they sang all the verses of the traditional Irish songs! The most haunting verse of this : I wish, I wish, I wish in vain
I wish I had my heart again
And vainly think I'd not complain
Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán
They left it out! Ahh heartbreakk.
So Siuil a Run is gaelic for Walk my love??? I have found all your comments very helpful. The more you look the more you learn. Enya one of my favourites.
you can find the lyrics everywhere if you just type 'siuil a run' at google.. including an English translation of the chorus
@Argentknight16 i'd say its Celtic music :)
@ctraver thanks for the reply... appreciate it =)
@RivenrockGardens i know two songs i sang in choir that would go well with this song: "Johnny has Gone for a Soldier" (sung by the girls) and "In Flanders Fields" (sung by the boys). i cryed harder when the boys sang, than i did when i sang our song......

Yeah - its on their first album (which is self-titled)
this is so beautiful - the arranger is a genius and the whole team too!
