i am using drop a as my "standard" tuning, but one alternative tuning I use on my six string would be dropping down the low A to F#. so now when you do a power chord on the low 2 strings you got an octave. barely use it to play those octaves but it gives the possibility for interesting chord-voicings. on my 8string I like to use my drops with a low E on top - 6string version would be Adadgb. and also, but thats where it gets tricky with string tension I tried going down to E on my 6string. So you got Eea etc. very different but also very fun. Yes those tunings djent, but I like to built my songs around nice chords and put the djent on top If I choose to, generally I would consider my playing-style to be more deftones-ish, I am not a super technical player, so I try to come up with interesting chords instead.
I use a standard scale tele, 72/74- 11/12 - used to have 80´s on it but thats more suitable for my 8string. on that I even had 85´s at one point, chugging on that low e really works with that.
Thanks for your inspiration Bill, will try a few of these! :)
These posts are always inspiring. This may or may not be of value, and it's coming from somebody who's just learning ambient guitar. But, I would highly recommend the Thalia Capo for baritone guitar if changing tunings with a capo. They are designed to work with individual fretboard radius dimensions. They are a bit heavy and expensive, but well-made and keep the guitar in tune. I started out using a Kyser 12-string Capo ( for extra strength) on my Taylor 416 LTD baritone, but the Thalia is so much better IMHO. I use it in conjunction with my collection of Kyser partial Capos, because the Thalia is so good as a pseudo "nut" for the guitar, it makes using an additional partial capo in conjunction a much better experience.
Something else I'd like to share is that it is kind of cool to record a standard guitar with an alternative tuning and then lay down track with another guitar that has Nashville tuning strings that's in the same alternative tuning scheme. It weaves a rich tapestry of sound ( I can't believe I just wrote that!) and allows you to use different effects on each. Sometimes it's good just to leave the Nashville tuning string guitar track with little to no effects at all. It really has a nice harmonic overtone. It's like playing 3D chess with sound.
You know, I am very boring and love standard tuning! But my second favourite is drop C# tuning (one semitones down and then drop). You can a little lower but it's not too crazy.

Funny to think: ADGCEA is also the tuning for guitalele and piccolo guitar!
Thanks
спасибо!🎉
Thanks
The Bob Ross of guitar 😄
Accurate because his sound paints such beautiful soundscapes in my mind
Yeah, kind'a😏
@@dteckt Let's be happy let's paint some black.
@@SxSxG666 I think we might need a sitar for that
Ser Davos, of the Baritone! I have always loved alt tunings on my standard scale guitars. I am going to buy a baritone soon and I found this video to be just the thing I needed to confirm that I need to do it. Thank you so much for putting in the work and taking the time out of your life to help teach us.
Semper Fidelis.
Thanks very much!!
🤣
Ser Davos?
Henrik Lien ahahaha really! You spotted him!
Chords of Onion
CGCEAE on a standard guitar, it works better if you have thicker strings, and it sounds great!
I’ve been playing in G Standard & Drop F. I started off using it for really heavy Doom Metal like some of the bands today who tune almost as low as a bass. Lately I’ve been loving it for softer psychedelic ambient sounds. It can sound really pretty yet also dark & evil at the same time.
I like to play in A# standard and to go in drop G#
I do concur.
I just need a baritone guitar.
I've wanted one ever since i found your channel.
I love it!
Hope you can get one!!!
if you have a couple standards you can pick up a baritone replacement neck off Warmoth for a couple hundred
Rondo Music has cheap baritone guitars, I got my lefty for 160 and it sounds really good for that price.
I'm getting the best of both with a baritone 7 string
Go to war moth and get a neck!!! I’m doing a kit and this is cherry on top
Great video! I really loved your playing in the GDADEA part. My favorite tunings for guitar are EAEABE and DAEAC#E. The latter is really close to GDADEA but has some very nice chord voicings with the C# and E ringing out under everything
You Sir have very elegant manners! I already feel more educated and encouraged to try some of those tunings! Thank you so much for posting the video!
This channel is a hidden gem. Pure gold to my ears.
New subscriber
Let me just say sir, your playing is some of the most beautiful, inspirational playing ive heard in a long time! Simply incredible!
Awesome tones! I love your tuning variations. I just ordered a baritone guitar because of your video. Lol! I'm a bass player with a secret guitar habit, so the baritone will be a cool variation. Thanks!
Thank you for this video! It’s so good to hear beautiful guitar tone on baritone everything else I’ve seen is super grunge Djent heavy stuff. Fun for a while but the chords and tones you get are what I’m looking for.
I've been having a blast tuning my baritone to open A (AEAC#A) and playing with a slide. The baritone is great for blues.
Your playing is so very different (and beautiful) compared to mine. Love the diversity this instrument can provide
Wonderfully informative. Thanks for sharing this!
I been straying away from Baritones because of all the Djent guys making Baritones seem for their style music. But, thanks to you i see Baritones in a whole different light. I believe it's time for me to try one. Thanks.
just bought a baritone and this is a super demo of further experimenting - many thanks
Best channel on UA-cam. Thank you for the information Sir. Have a great day ahead. 🙏
Subscribed cause of the tone. Excellent clean tone
I absolutely adore your content, you have helped me with ambient guitar, and now I know how to tune my Barry I get in a couple of days, thank you so much. Subscribed.
Thanks!!!!
Such a beautiful tone😍
Bill, i don't know where you came from but earlier today your ambient sounds hit my in box from 2015. So i have been listening to your post all day. After the 2nd post i heard, of course i had to sub and hit the bell. Many thanks.
And thanks so much for letting me know you are liking the content!
Awesome video. Very helpful.
I’m a huge fan of your playing and the ambient style. I need to get a baritone guitar and a short scale bass! That lower register stuff is great. Your playing is so relaxing to listen to... awesome! I can listen to your playing for hours.
So glad you are liking the music. Thanks so much! And...I think everyone needs a baritone. :-)
This is very inspirin'. I might try some of these on my baritone guitar. And as Daryl Hall said at the end of the Hall & Oates video fer Method Of Modern Love, "Don't mess with imperfection". And as I always say, keep up the good work!
Thanks!!!!!
I'll be referring to playing metal as "getting down in the dungeon" from now on.
Love your style!
Ive found tuning a 25.5 scale guitar to C standard can work well as a baritone. But at B standard it starts to fall apart.
I use a drop tying pedal
Hey just incase you still have this problem, I have an Ibanez which I'm pretty sure is exactly the same scale length and I recently bought some "mammoth slinky" 0.12 gauge guitar strings and it has enough tension to be able to go to baritone standard tuning or even as low as drop G#. So I'd recommend buying some thicker strings but just make sure they'll fit your guitar.
@@TheLowest Tuning down a standard guitar will never sound the same as an real bariton guitar!!...scale lenght is very important!!...
That drop Celt tuning is just an ethereal playground. Playing it I don't know whether to sadly cry or weep for joy, musically speaking
Such an emotional tuning ✌️🎶🎶
My favorite is Drop Ab, or Bb standard variant on a baritone. Another cool one is Ab,Db,Ab,Db,Gb,Bb it ads some really cool chord voicings like on It’s been awhile by staind.
Thank you very. I just bought the Danelectro Baritone.
Thanks Bill, Great sounds thankyou, loved the DADGAD equivalent tuning. I'd love to hear your baritone telecaster with your PRS, and in comparison to the PRS , just to hear the difference in clarity of the open tuned chords.
Essentially any alternate guitar tunings down a fourth. I have been following a lot of your videos. I hope to be adding some of my own content soon. I have a baritone being built from parts right now. I had purchased the body and neck several years ago but issues of time and budget intervened. I am finally getting it assembled, complete with some custom electronics from various sources. I have studied music composition, played mandolin in a folk group, and some rock guitar. I am new to Ambient music, but I look forward to being a more active part of the community.
Hey man I just subscribed
I'm about to dive into baritone land, down in the dungeon, love it. Ive done a lot of ambient electronic music, been picking up my guitars a lot more over the last few years.
Great to hear! Which baritone are you looking at (or have gotten)?
Great stuff. Thank you, sir.
You should make a "down in the dungeon" T-shirt! I always love when you say it ahahah
Smart ideas...well spoken explained demonstrated thanks and God Bless You...
Great video. I love using alternate tunings. On of my favorites is: Open C# (C#-Ab-C#-Ab-C#-F).
Nathan - thanks for sharing that one!!
Good video. The host had a very calming energy.
Thanks very much!
Buying a baritone has gotten be back into guitar after taking years off. It's such a beautifully haunting instrument. Thanks for this video these tunings are great.
Amazing
I've stumbled across one nearby while looking for a new electric since I barely play and have a nice amp but crap guitars.
How do you go playing the old favourites, or is it all about new experiments ?
Cheers for any info..
@@matt79hzwell, if you’re playing songs meant for standard guitar tuning, it’s tuned a fifth down from standard, so you’ll often get far more throaty and deep sounding versions of old classics. If you’re attempting to play songs you’re used to in their intended keys you’ll need to capo on the fifth fret.
As for how to play a baritone, treat it like a new instrument and explore all the sonic capabilities!!ill bet you’ll find yourself lost (in a good way) playing a baritone. Open chords always sound best to me, personally. But there is a lot to be said for power and barred chords. It oftentimes sounds so much more powerful through a baritone.
I bought myself a left-handed Eastwood sidejack baritone guitar and I play in standard A tuning. I think standard A has more variety personally. I got slightly heavier strings that were for standard A and they feel and sound much better than when I went a full step down with the strings that came with it. Thanks for the tip at the end!
With the 28" scale of the Sidejack A Standard make sense!
Awesome. I was thinking how to tune mine.
Great stuff. Love the Neil Young reference-
Thanks!
I really like Karnivool's tuning, which is essentially a hybrid of Drop B and E Standard (B F# B G B E). They were also the ones who introduced me to baritones in the first place
Could you do that on a baritone? Would have assumed the top three strings would struggle from the scale length and tension
Just got my 1st baritone guitar (Danelectro '56 Reissue) while relearning guitar after 30 years. I remember seeing this channel a long time ago thinking I would love to be able to play similar music. Now I can!
Also, the neck of the guitar's almost 30 inches so I'm assuming I can go loooooooooow. lol
GDGDAD! Perfect for slide playing and chord strumming
For years I've flipped back and forth between a bass and baritone. I really prefer the lower end sounds, but tired of having to tune down my standard 6 string.
Finally decided to take the plunge and ordered the Schecter Apocalypse Baritone along with a Boss Katana Mark II 100 amp. (hoping I chose the proper combination). Still waiting for it to arrive, around new years, 2019.
Really glad to come across your channel, love the beautiful sounds you produce with your rig.
Thanks again for the opportunity to learn from you.
Hope the Schecter works well for you. A great way to start the new year!!
@@chordsoforion , I was hoping you would have an opinion on that particular guitar, I bought it on faith that the company name brand would be an excellent and well made instrument..
@@robbohannan1893 Looks like a cool guitar, but I have never seen one or played one, so I have no real opinion other than I am not sure the pickups would be a good fit for me, as I tend to prefer lower gain. But that's just me - personal preference.
The guitar is great, having some issues trying to find the right sound with the Boss Katana Amp. Maybe you have a video here describing how you get the ambient sound as sweet as you make it. The boss amp is a modeling amp with a lot of build in effects, and it's a challenge to get several to work together.
I sent you a PM on FB regarding this, was hoping maybe you could point me in the right direction.
I'm on my way to pick up my first Baritone..A Squier Jazzmaster..Thanks for the great info!
Just ordered one of those!
Love PRS! I still want one to this day!
Silly Siji These SEs are extremely high quality and very affordable
Great !!! Thx man
I'm tuning my guitars (not baritones) in BEADF#B, ADGCEA, ADADGB (as 7-strings without one thin), F#BEADG (8-strings without two), F#BEAC#F# (seven steps down). Thanks for double drop AEADF#A, it's gave me new ideas. String sets ErnieBall 13-72 and 12-62.
I'm loving triple drop G... it's essentially a fifths style-
G D G D G D.
I got the idea from (trying to) learning Hindustan/ Raga stuff. But it's great for Doom & Ambient because you can just rake up the strings & get great harmonic sounds.
I do the same on a guitar with CGCGCG... really awesome if you got a fretless. For my Fretless bass I'm using DADA which makes some fab drones.
There's pluses & minuses with any tuning- but this is a fun one!
I'm itching to try a version of Fripps' New Standard Tuning on Baritone.
Pardon my long rambling.
Mr CO Orion- you rock, great chan yo!
Have you ever tried playing 7 string guitars? They have the range of both baritone and standard guitars so you might like them. Also you could try DADFAE tuning which is open Dmadd9, sounds really good.
I have a PRS SVN and demoed it recently here on the channel: ua-cam.com/video/6Yg2LNCWU1I/v-deo.html. Glad you mentioned this - I need to get back to working with it. I still have a ways to go to really learn how to play 7 strings.
Interesting video. I’ve been using CGCGCD on acoustic for years nor. Also CGCFCD is nice. I spent a very happy hour once in a guitar shop playing a Taylor baritone in the lower equivalents. So I guess that is GDGDGA and then GDGCGA.
Exactly!
Amazing !!
Thank you for showing ADGCEA tuning. I think it would be cool to play a guitalele with that, it's an octave higher
Thank you!
I tune my Squire 27inch bartitone in standard A tuning.
I tune my Martin 12 string with nine strings in drop B ie C# standard with the lowest string at B. Single strings on the three lower courses, sometimes I use the single strings on the two lowest courses and on the highest.....I use slightly heavier strings....
Thanks man
Excellent video. Just curious are these chord progressions part of your original songs? Or can I steal them and try writing songs with them?! JK but yeah great intro to the baritone guitar thank you!
A have a Tele-type Dean Zelinsky Baritone (28.5" scale) that is tuned to A standard (LOVE that tuning!). I strung it with Fender Bajo Sexto strings (16 to 66) that are unfortunately not available anymore. But at Stringjoy you have a lot of gauge and customization options. Check 'em out!
Nice! and thanks for the string tip!
My pleasure! Love your videos 😊
This video is quite amazing. Really great moods and sounds you are creating. Love it!!! Would the wide PRS neck kill my wrist since I'm a strat player?
The typical Strat neck is 1.650" and the PRS SE-277 is 1.6875", so a little wider, but just barely noticeable.
@@chordsoforion This is a tremendous help to me. Thanks very much! Incredibly talented, tasteful, and kind too! You are awesome!!
@@chordsoforion Was hoping a EHX Pitchfork + or Digitech Drop would get me in the ballpark, but I think to get these amazing sounds I'd need a Baritone guitar. I have a strat, acoustic and bass. Like to have just what's needed.
I can tune to B Standard on my Jazzmaster baritone but it's more comfy to keep it in factory tuned A Standard. My favorite alternate tuning on it is F, C, G, C, E, A; keeping the baritone feel & double serving as a Bass VI
Yeah, that Jazzmaster bari sits a little closer to bass than most other baritones. Cool!
Yeah, that Jazzmaster is a bass, not necessarily a baritone guitar. It’s a 30” scale making it a short scale bass as it’s traditionally tuned E-e, just and octave below the standard guitar tuning.
Id like to Do B-E-A-D-G and C or B again for it will be like a six string bass but one octave higher.
Interesting!
Awesome video... Always saw the lowest string like a base/foundation for the rest of the strings...Providing the low end to make a track appear beefy... Hmmm lowest string= low end?
Could be, if that's the way you utilize the tuning.
So, I just picked up the White Gibson Bari SG (Unofficial Buckethead). It has light strings on now. I just bought some 13-62 strings for it and I like the idea of standard A tuning because it seems very understandable, that is same as the notes on the typical 5th fret one octave down. I also like that I get a whole octive lower of Bb which allot of Jazz tunes are in. Think the strings are heavy enough. I guess when I try out I will know. Also wondering if you have tried flat wound strings on it and what you think. Thanks
That baritone DADGAD is amazing!!!
Amazing!! I am a bass player who picked up ukulele and when I try to play guitar it's not clicking for me. But if I did ADGCEA that's ukulele tuning + two bass strings.
“Down in the dungeon” 😂😂😂
So, I write songs, and I’ve noticed my vocal range usually works really well if my guitar is tuned to D!
Is it worth buying a baritone guitar and tuning it to D to accompany my vocal range ?
Also, will my voice and tone of the guitar blend too much ?
Just downtune an usual guitar
In case you still read comments here, thx first of all and a Q: i got my first baritone and tune it as if the lowest strings of an 8 string, so all in fifths, all down half a step. So F, A#,D#,G#,C#,F#. Tension is all fine. But, is it common to forego the 4th tuning of the two highest strings? I‘ve only been playing bass before so have not gotten accustomed to the guitar intervals yet, and am not sure if I‘m missing out too much or not. Thanks
Steinberger Synapse in Bb standar here... With DAddario 12 extra heavy (the White one)
Nice!
Hello, I'm in the process of building a "Telecaster Like" baritone right now and still considering different pickups. Can you inform me of the model name of the guitar you are using in this video? I'm listening around now for pickups that are 1.) Clear and stringy 2.) Rich with a llittle sweetness and, 3.) Are not muddy or congested in the lower mids. The tone you get in this video is very nice and very close to the list of attributes I'm looking for in a pickup, especially for a neck pickup. During covid I decided to learn a completely new style of acoustic guitar that I had never done before and that I found beautiful. That eventually led me to celtic finger style, and guitar material that is like that. Stephen Wake, Pierre Bensusan, Michael Hedges. I managed to learn and play a number of tunes well that had enchanted me for years. This was on the acoustic but set out to build an electric that would be used primarily for this kind of music, and designed to be optimized for this. So, I have no interest in strumming or using a pick on this guitar - I have my regular Strat for everything else. If I could find out the make and specs on your pickups that would be great! Love your videos and thank for all your efforts in making them available to us! Best, Phil Donovan
The guitar in this video is the PRS SE-277 Semi-hollow baritone. The pickups are the stock P-90 style "soapbar" pickups. I have idea what the specs are. I would guess you could get a similar tone by getting any kind of P-90 pickup.
You forgot one important one!!...once in ADGCEA (A to A if you prefer), go from there to one of my favorite GDGCFA!!...in the B to B tuning that would be AEADGB!!...cheers!!...
i know this isnt baritone but open Cadd9 is great fun to mess around in!
Thanks
You are welcome!
Love all the contributions to ambient guitar. I can't say how many purchases I've made based on your playing/ info/ reviews. Thanks so much!!! I was wondering if there are any sonic differences between this PRS 277 in this vid, and the sunburst you've used on another vid? Also my funds are limited, and there are no baritones in my area, that I could find...Do you have a favorite electric baritone sonically? Many thx again.
Thanks for the kind words! As far as the SE277s go, there is no sonic difference between the grey-black one and the sunburst. There is however, a small difference in the feel of the neck. The sunburst is just a wee bit chunkier. I am sure it is just variance in the manufacturing tolerance. And yes - the semi-hollow PRS is my current fav, although I still love my Tele baritone.
You dident answer all his questions, ambient guy???
What color is your guitar? I've had my eye on the gray semi-hollow SE-277. Yours looks almost green, which I dig a lot.
Mine is also the grey semi-hollow. Sometimes the finish can have a greenish-blueish thing going depending on the light,.
Chords Of Orion
Thanks. That color is kinda scarce these days. I wish I had picked one up when I had the chance.
Great video. Question, can a baritone like that PRS handle, B standard, drop a, and c standard without having to be adjusting the truss rod all the time? What string gauges would you recommend for that?
Drop A is no problem, but I would be a little concerned about drop C on this guitar using the stock strings. If I were you, I would use one of the online string tension calculator to see how much tension this would produce.
I mostly tune to A E A A E A and A A E A A E (25.1” scale, 6 strings 14-72). My nylon string I have tuned to open B minor.
I finally got a baritone guitar by repurposing my 1994 strat and a local luthier is putting a 29 inch neck that he made by hand. We will be doing Half Nashville Tuning tuned to A or Bb A D G(octave up) C(octave up) E A. Basically like Pat Metheny. Note that the middle strings are higher. And I will be using 72 to 14. The middle 2 will be normal guitar which I plan to 15 and 11/12
Hi bearded guru, first of all good job on your alternative approach to guitar,I like it a lot. I have a uestion for you,can I tune a baritone acoustic in real open c or the one step higher is gonna put too much tension on the instrument?
Hey Christian - it all depend on the string gauge. I would use one of the online string tension calculators to make sure your desired tuning works with the scale length of the guitar.
@@chordsoforion many thanks for the reply man :) gonna check this then ;)
I might be wrong but you have to have been a fan of The Cure, the third tuning demonstration you made sounded like a Robert Smith riff! By the way, love your videos! Wish I would've known about your channel sooner, I've been playing with baritones for quite some time and learned most of the does and don'ts XD
Hey Kai! Glad to know that you are a fellow baritone player! And no, I was never a fan of The Cure. I was always more into the prog/jazz side of things when they hit the scene.
Chords Of Orion maybe it's vice versa than, maybe Smith was into that stuff too XD
How about F#-E-A-D-F#-B
You get a octave from a power chord shape on the 2 bottom strings. As someone who plays an 8 string, it’s an awesome tuning for 6 string baritones.
Whoa! That’s pretty low. I think I would want to replace the 6th string with a heavier gauge on a 27” scale.
Chords Of Orion I find it playable on a standard baritone setup if you are a bit delicate.
If you planning solely using this tuning, then yeah, A beefier 6th string would help.
B standard and Drop A. \m/
Hayden Rix why a baritone standard d when you can get a seven string. Genuine question, I dont really know why you’d pick a baritone over a 7 string guitar
Any benefits for a baritone??
I use the same tunings on the 7 string as well. Integrating E standard with a low A or B. It's preference to use 6 or 7 strings. To keep your high range, go for a 7 string. Want a traditional feel but lower tuned, get a baritone guitar or just tune down. Depending on what I'm writing I use either 6 or 7 string in B or Drop A. Most the time it doesn't really matter what I use unless I wrote a song that requires the high E on a 7 string.
@@koffieverslaafde627 switching to a 7 after years of playing a 6 is like learning a new instrument. I don't have a baritone or a 7, but I have tried both, and if i wanted low tuning, I would choose a baritone over a 7 string any day. It all comes down to preference
Abstract Peter Griffin thanks, i think id personally go for a seven because i still want my high E
I play a lightly modified squier with 72-13 in b standard
I'm curious... Has anyone made a 12 string baritone acoustic ambient song? Imagine a 12 string baritone acoustic with massive hall reverb any maybe some delay. The chords would sound so full and beautiful. I could be wrong though. Would be awesome if you can test that out Bill, if you have a 12 string acoustic of course.
I have been lusting after a Taylor Leo Kottke 12-string, which is designed to be tuned down to C#, so that would be pretty close. And I agree - it would sound great!
GDGDAD, AEADGD and AEADGC are also interesting
Have you ever tried applying open G tuning to a baritone? So, instead of open C (C-G-C-G-C-E) on a standard guitar, you would do G-D-G-D-G-B. I personally play mostly in open C on my Strat, and have been trying out open C with a low G on my 7 string.
I have tried it once or twice. Am not an open C player though, so open G feels the same way to me. But it would definitely work, if that's what you are into.
I was just lookiing for smoke on the water tabs for dummies and ended up here. Boy, do I have TONS to learn.
Many thanks! What kind of string gauge do you use for "standard Baritone tuning" ?
I typically use 2 different sets: D'Addario XL157 (.014 - .068) and Elixir 12302 (.012 - .068)
What tuning were you using in that little opening rif?
Not to mention partial capo possibilité but that would be a different video...
True, and I do have a vid discussing capo use, including a partial capo: ua-cam.com/video/1KtT1ICCO_I/v-deo.html
What makes a baritone guitar something very different from a 7-string guitar without the first string and a slightly different tuning?
Dan Electro 56 sounds great with these tips
DADGAD!
Oh yeah!!!
Which becomes AEADAE
I mean AEADEA
What is it that Mike Mushok of Staind does to his baritone strings' tuning?
do you use these for acoustic baritone guitar also?
