One year, I gave my parents frozen meals, such as Lasagna, Mac and Cheese, that I had made myself. I made them in 2-person sizes and put them in their freezer so they could be enjoyed after the holidays, in the “dark days” of winter. My stepdad loved a good meal, and my mom loved not cooking! And, they had no interest in getting more “stuff”.
A friend of mine has her family get together at each other's houses every weekend for the month of December and they do chores for them - deep cleaning windows, cleaning out the barn/basement, caulking windows, fixing doors, etc. It's wonderful for the elderly especially and it gives them an excuse to spend more time together and eat more. December is their favorite month. It's not feesible for all families, and I can't get my family on board with the idea, but always thought it was so neat.
As someone who is always a mess. If someone paid for a professional organizer for my house, I would love them forever. Heck even if they just came over and helped me organize my room themselves, it would make my year. Waaay better than any gift they could ever get me.
I’m a person who does not enjoy massages or spa days. I feel like it’s a bit of an invasion of my personal space and I hate the feeling of oils etc on my body. I know I’m probably in the minority, but it could be worth checking if the person you intend to buy this for would actually like it.
I know what you mean. I can't stand to have my toes messed with. My daughter gave up on trying to get me to have a pedicure. I don't need some stranger touching me unless I'm sick, broken, or hemorrhaging.
Same here. I don’t like massages etc. I usually have my sister cut my hair. I don’t like people I don’t know touching me. A friend and I went to an event and I “won” a shoulder massage. I went through with it but it is something I won’t ever repeat! Lol
Recently, my daughter was diagnosed with a severe dust mite allergy. I'm not supposed to vacuum if she is even in the house! So my husband approached me about a robot vacuum. He's wanted one forever. I finally said yes and oh my gosh!!!! It's amazing. My daughter and I can play outside while it's inside doing its thing. So, so amazing. You will wonder why on earth you waited so long.
My favorite gifts to get is simple, food kits like cookies or brownie boxes, movie night kit, soups an crackers ect. Cleaning supplies or bath supplies. I don't know why ppl thinks this is weird . It's something I would use.
When someone has a loved one pass away, I give paper plates, paper and foam cups, plastic cutlery, napkins, paper towels and toilet paper instead of food. This way, they don’t have to worry about running out to the store when they have a houseful of people. And, none of it expires or goes bad. So, I don’t think cleaning supplies as gifts is weird.
“Rockin Around the Christmas Tree.” I used to hold my son (now 16) and twirl around and dance to this when he was a toddler. He would laugh and say over and over, “do it again.” Great memories. Thank you for sharing your life with us Marissa. 😊🎄
“Baby it’s cold outside” more seasonal then Christmas I believe but it’s been a favorite for years. And I don’t want to hear any negatively because of my choice 👍
Honestly in my community ,Christmas gifts were never a thing ,it was only like until a couple of years back when I started watching UA-cam and reading blogs that I realized Christmas gifts were a thing 🙂 ,our Christmas was always around family food and celebration and really I just love it that way ❤, cuz as time passes by ,all u remember are the memories and that on the whole are like precious gifts to me 🥰 as always lovely video Marissa ☺
Thanks Irene, yes, my husband is a lot more like you - they didn’t grow up celebrating Christmas, and even when they celebrate holidays it’s just about food and being together! Memories are always the most precious thing, aren’t they? Cheers Irene. 🌹
I love the robot vacuum idea for my grandmother! It is very hard to find meaningful gifts for her because she already has everything she wants. I know that cleaning her house independently is very meaningful to her and she has a very heavy/clunky vacuum. She gets short of breath with heavy tasks like vacuuming so I think that is a great idea!
The Huron Carol and the Carol of the Bells are two of my favourite carols. I'm Canadian and I love the tonality of native carols and the diversity of the Carol of the Bells.
I declutter some of my Christmas decorations every year when I start decorating my apartment for Christmas. I have a friend who gifts me decorations that she makes. They are always awesome!
Deviations Project has some of the best versions of xmas songs if you like instrumental+synth style music, but Carol of Bells (Trans-Siberian Orchestra veraion) is still my favorite as well.
@Marissa #13/11:32ish mark seems to have had an editing mishap. The sound is fine so it doesn't really disrupt the flow of the video, but I thought you'd like to be aware of it. 😁
I'm from Poland and my favourite christmas caroll is "Lulajże Jezuniu", it is lullaby for baby Jesus. Checkout Chopin's Sherzo h-moll op. 20, he composed it with inspiration of this caroll 🥰 and from pop music i like all i want for christmas, especially for cooking christmas dishes. Also Michael's Buble versions of carolls
A few years ago, I was part of three secret Santa's and that was it. I challenged myself to either make the gift or buy it second hand. I had so much fun. My favourite present that I bought second hand, was a 7ft long star wars blanket(only 20 dollars!!). This was perfect for my star wars loving brother that is 6ft 4. It's been 3 years and my brother uses it every night as a replacement to a comforter.
This is the year that I'm finally enforcing that things be different for Thanksgiving and Christmas. While I don't think I have seasonal depression, I do still have major depression and chronic health issues that are always at their worst in the winter due to the crowds for said holidays causing so much stress. It's not worth it. Everything should be an experience. I know it's easier when a holiday is kid-centric, and I'll miss that. I don't have a decent kitchen to cook in, but I would do a lot of baking if possible ❤️❤️
How did it go last Christmas season? How is it going this Christmas season? Wishing you well ( I have chronic health issues too and am trying to do the same)
My favorite Carol is 'Silent Night's because in my family we sign it. My grandpa worked at Gallaudet College and it was really special to my grandma after he passed. Now that she is gone, it is even more special.
My favourite carol is White Christmas - which is strange because it's summer here in New Zealand and way too hot for a white Christmas. As minimalists, our family no longer buys presents for Christmas - we just enjoy the day together.
Oh Holy Night. My favorite memory at Christmas singing it as a solo at our church and my mom’s smile on her face while I sang. She was so proud of me and loved to hear me sing. Favorite gift books! My mom and dad bought me books growing up because I loved to read more than anything else and cds of bands my dad and I listened to together. My dad would buy me something new to wear every year and pjs for Christmas Eve for my mom,dad and myself.
My favourite Christmas carol - Hark! The Herald Angels Sing ❤️ I'll never understand why people stress over Christmas and giving gifts because it's a time to celebrate Jesus and be with the ones you love and be grateful. It doesn't matter if you have a full roast with gifts galore or baked beans on toast with no gifts, as long as your surround by those you love
long before I discovered minimalism I stopped dreaming / wanting specific things for Christmas. I had started working, making my own money and buying what I needed or just wanted. Since then, my favorite gifts have been a pair of socks or pajamas and a large bar of chocolate (like the 300-gram ones). This video made me think, and the truth is, I don't have a specific memory of a Christmas present, even from the those my parents gave me as a child. In fact, the only Christmas present that is a thing, and remember, is exactly the ereader. My parents gave it to me when I was 20, which is more than 10 years ago.
Not everyone is excited about gifts. I would feel much more happy and loved by receiving some help around the house or a meal than something in a gift bag. Though I’m surrounded by people who love to give stuff.
My favorite Christmas carol is Little Drummer Boy although when I was young and in choir, I loved to sing Carol of the Bells. It was so much fun to hear all the different 'bell' tones enter the song and bring the song to life. Also this year I'm shopping my own 'declutter' stuff. I'm 68 and I have a lot of lovely things that my children and their spouses would like as well, so I'll be saving a lot of money and giving them what I already own. (Don't worry, I know what they don't want - I'm donating all that stuff). I'm also up cycling (I think that's the term). My children's great grandmother died more than 20 years ago. When cleaning out her home I found 4 patchwork and embroidered quilt tops that were made from her own clothing. Each were too small for a twin bed and 4 were too big to make one quilt. I've had them in a clear plastic tub for years and about 8 different homes. So this year I had to do something with it or declutter it for good. I am making 8-9 pillows for my kids and their Dad's family. I think it's a winner because I've shown it to my daughter and she's thrilled she'll be getting one. They've been fun to make and I remember that beautiful woman the whole time I doing it.💃
I rescued from my husband’s trunk (he used it to lie on when changing a tire) a quilt made by his grandmother who had died several years before. It was in bad shape but parts could be salvaged for pillows for family memories.
I love all the Christmas songs, can't pick just one! My birthday is December 25th, so I sing "Happy Birthday" to Jesus, while my family sings it to me. 🤗🥰 I wish everyone a wonderful holiday season!❄🎼🎻
My favorite Christmas Carol is have yourself a Mary little Christmas. And I know whenever I was little my favorite Christmas Carol was silent night and that's so one of my favorites. I adore Christmas music. My favorite Christmas type album is the Charlie Brown Christmas album I actually was just thinking about it because I remember whenever my husband and I were first married I had that album gifted to me and I found memories of cleaning up the house at Christmas time and I would always have it on.
I'm so proud of my partner this year. We did most of our shopping two months ago, we're buying our immediate family members only two gifts, and the extended family children just one gift each. Everyone else gets photo cards :) He is highly attached to objects and gift giving so this is a huge deal for him.
That’s a good idea with the gifts but honestly giving photo cards or the like is kinda conceited. Getting pics of other people always amazes me because no one wants to receive that. Save your time and money.
@@catherinep1800 I like photo Christmas cards from many people I hardly ever get to see. I hang them up and try to say a prayer for them when I see them. Especially during this whole COVID thing. I really miss gatherings and vacations to see far away people etc. I think it's personal preference though, no right nor wrong.
My mom one year asked for a new vacuum cleaner before robot ones came out. She wanted it for Christmas as she had wrist surgery and her current one was causing her pain. So my Grandma and I hunted for one that would be perfect for her. Christmas morning we hid it and saved it for last. She was looking a bit disappointed when opening her gifts. Then we hauled out the last gift when she opened it her whole face lit up. She was thrilled.
I don't really have a favorite Christmas carol but Manheim Steamroller always brings back memories of Christmases past. My dad had an old stereo and he played the whole album multiple times during the Christmas season.
Okay my favorite Christmas carol is "Mary Did You Know" but I still sing that version of "Jingle Bells" you sing at the beginning and watch my husband roll his eyes! 😜 And I'm taking notes...I'm determined to do things differently this year.
I like donating money to a charity on someone's behalf. Food and drinks gifts are great as well. Spa/pampering session is also very appreciated especially for moms. My sister years ago gave my daughter a year membership to the aquarium and she loved it, such a fantastic gift, we used it sooooo much and learnt so much as well. I am going to buy board games for my daughter this year, she is getting more into games. This was a great selection, thanks for reminding me of so many options.👍😁
I am impressed by your thoughtful list! Thank you! My favourite Christmas Carol is 'Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht! because I have known it since my childhood and it brings up the atmosphere in the church at night. Of course I love its melody, too.
Oh YES! I want a robot vacuum so very much. :) Also would love a gift certificate for a house cleaner or cleaning service- those are very considerate, time saving gift ideas. And time is very precious
My absolute fav Christmas song is Carol of the Bells sung by LeAnn Rimes at the CMT awards on Dec 1, 2014. Gives me goosebumps every time. Do yourself a favor. Also, her backup singers outdo themselves also. Absolute perfection 😍
I am a new subscriber. Your content is very meaningful because it is not surface. It’s more like surgery. My favorite carol is “Lo, How A Rose E’er Blooming” because it is very old and I love ancient music. I also am a singer and the harmonies for this song are beautiful. I taught my daughter to sing it and now as a grown woman, she is my best friend and we love to sing together. Thank you for all the work you have done to bring your content to us. Merry Christmas; may the light of Christ shine on you and those you love.
We gifted ourselves a robot vacuum cleaner last year and we absolutely love it. Saves so much time when you have pets and would need to vacuum every day otherwise
Read the full lyrics to Good King Wenceslaus. "Ye who know will bless the poor will yourselves find blessing." Gets me every time. Also "Gabriel's Message."
Walking in a Winter Wonderland or Sleigh Ride together with you. When my dad was still mobile I would take them to art exhibits or museums as a Christmas gift. It was something we enjoyed together and got us out.
It was always tradition in Quebec to celebrate Christmas on Dec. 24th at Midnight. Children would be put to bed after early dinner and woken up at 11 pm to prepare for Midnight Mass, knowing that after there would be a meal and then the gift opening. During the Mass, my favorite song was always Minuit Chrétien (Oh Holy Night) because it is so divine it brings shivers to me every time and also because it was the only song in my range to sing for some strange reason. To me it is the Christmas song that brings the divine and the worldly together.
🎄Joy to the World 🎄 Is my utmost favorite christmas song. And why ? Because my favorite seasons are the fall and winter and im definitely joyful because of the holidays. So listening to this song Just adds to that. As for gifts i may use creativity....im a artist so i may be painting pictures as gifts. Buy some beautiful frames and theres a gift.
O Holy Night and Peace on Earth are two of my favorites but I LOVE all Christmas Caroles. Oh and Have A Holly Jolly Christmas but it has to be sung by Burl Ives.
I love this idea!
Brilliant!!
This is genius!
So thoughtful for both of them
Great idea. The Best present to give to anybody is listening and "reading" to whatever it is they need or want.

Totally agree I once received a day as a gift, I passed it to someone that actually wanted it.
Same here. I don’t like massages etc. I usually have my sister cut my hair. I don’t like people I don’t know touching me. A friend and I went to an event and I “won” a shoulder massage. I went through with it but it is something I won’t ever repeat! Lol
Oh my gosh, if I were your friend I would offer to trade gifts.
O Holy Night - “the weary world rejoices” those words have never stood out to me as much before as they do now 🙌🏻
Amen to that! God bless you!! :)
I like Reba's version. Heard it as a youngster years ago and have loved that version ever since.
Nat King Cole’s version , I can tear up!

"Mary, did you know?" Is my favorite Carol.
O Holy Night. A woman at my Church is a professional singer and sings it better than I’ve ever heard. Moves me to tears every time.
Oh Holy Night! And singing this by candlelight on Christmas Eve in the church. So magical.

I know that cleaning her house independently is very meaningful to her and she has a very heavy/clunky vacuum. Carol of the Bell 🔔 ♥ is my favorite. I do love them all though.
100% love my robot vacuum it helps take that off my mental to do especially a self emptying one.

I know this song! The Benedictines of Mary, Queen of the Apostles sing it on their Christmas album.

I really like foods as gifts! Like popcorn, fruit, or tea! I have allergies and can’t eat a lot so it’s always super meaningful, easy, and not stuff.
*You can't always wait for the perfect time. Sometimes you have to dare to do it because life is too short to wonder what could have been...*

I love Christmas music but my all time fave song is Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas 🎄
My absolute fav Christmas song is Carol of the Bells sung by LeAnn Rimes at the CMT awards on Dec 1, 2014. Gives me goosebumps every time. Do yourself a favor. Also, her backup singers outdo themselves also. Absolute perfection 😍
I just listened to it. It's fantastic!
I love All the carols. Lately I really perk up for The Wexford Carol, especially the version by Allison Krauss and Yo-Yo Ma.
“Away in a manger” is my favorite Christmas carol 🎄
Fave Christmas Carol: Somewhere in My Memory (from Home Alone)
My favorite traditional Christmas songs are O Holy Night and Baby It’s Cold Outside but I just love Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas is You.

My favorite Christmas carol is "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas."
Feliz navidad, I like anything upbeat and happy! ❤️
Carol of the bells! The absolute greatest song in my opinion.

My favorite Christmas Carol is "Away in the Manger". ❤️🎵
