    Operator: TCDD (Turkish Railways)
    Departure: İzmir, Turkey
    Arrival: Konya, Turkey
    Cost: Private Sleeper - 300 Turkish Lira (£15.89, €19.29, $20.09)

I'm living in Urla suburbs of İzmir. In Turkey people generally prefers coaches. Because conventional trains too slow. Goverments not invested rail transport in many decades. Last ten years a few HST lines completed and some of them including İzmir - Ankara still in progress. I'm advising most famous sleeper train line East Express between Ankara and Kars too see. Took a TCDD sleeper train from Kars to Ankara (8am till 12 noon the next day..) a few months ago. Our cabin is a 4 bedded instead of 2 bedded one (so there was no sink or mini fridge). We also did not have shower facility in our train. That train ride is still one of the most memorable part of my trip to be honest!

Since pandemic I preferred driving. Back when I was a child some 30 40 years ago, rail transport was our preferred method. We used almost all intercity lines and regional besides the suburban trains in İstanbul. I recommend the sleeper train to Kars in winter time.

I make this journey every time I visit Turkey, the TCDD sleepers are far and away my favourite sleeper, roomy, comfortable and cheap.
I’ve done all of the Turkish sleepers now, including many that sadly no longer run.
The biggest shame is that a few years ago they removed the superb restaurant service. Then all those buffet car tables had white tablecloths and smart waiters. The food was as cheap as the tickets, and they served alcohol.
Try to take this journey again in summer, with the light evenings as the journey is through the hills and over some breathtaking viaducts across deep valley’s straight out of a Wild West movie!

But after now researching it, there appear to be other possibilities too eg Tempat to Gemat. Deffo worth it...

Very impressive, the full fridge is amazing. Does any train company in europe offer fridge in coupes? The only major downside for me would be that you cant lock your doors from outside and pretty much anyone can freely walk around. Here when you cant lock the door from outside, every wagon has its own conductor and the door between wagons are locked so the condactor has to open them for you and he would not let anyone into his wagon who is not supposed to be there.

Although there was no shower access…. the final report card gives them an A+. At that price you were lucky to have a seat inside the train instead of on the roof ….never mind a room with a bed, a wash basin, HVAC and so on.😂😂
I kept thinking that rail transport must be heavily subsidized… cuz there’s no way they made any money based on your ticket price.

Nice trip. Love a sleeper train. Does the dining car ever offer a full dinner service? That's the only way you could improve that service..

The only real flaw is that the sleeping cabin cannot be locked from the outside. I wouldn't be comfortable leaving my stuff unattended. Otherwise an excellent product. You should have visited the restaurant though

Actually the only sleeping compartments in Europe that lock from the outside are - as far as I remember - those of Nightjet "Comfortline" sleeping cars and of course the Caledonian Sleeper ones.

Thank you, nonstop eurotrip! A night train !!! I love night trains!!! The fact that the train is not expensive trumps any other criteria. The price is the major criterion. Price matters more than anything else. On the other hand, the fact that the train is not electrified is a penalty, I love electrified trains. moreover, It makes me weird that you leave Europe to go to Asia, you have plenty of trains in Europe to visit.

I was travelling with TCDD sleeper trains in winter 2009 at the routes Istanbul Haydarpasa - Kayseri, Ankara - Izmir and Izmir - Eskisehir. At least at the Ankara - Izmir train, the shower was available. I also appreciated the refridgerators in the sleeping car compartments. The meals in the restaurant cars were also good value for money. The only minus were the huge delays of the trains, the bus substitute in the suburban area of Izmir due to construction works and Turkish kids in a suburb of Kayseri throwing stones into the window of our sleeper.
Later on, in autumn 2009, I was travelling again with TCDD sleeper trains, once more on the route Istanbul Haydarpasa - Kayseri and Afyon - Istanbul Haydarpasa. This time, the shower was locked.
Overall, I can recommend the TCDD services.
Contrary, I cannot recommend the service Istanbul Sirkeci - Sofia. In 2009, these trains consisted of only one Bulgarian sleeping car built in former East Germany. The toilets in these cars were dirty with no running water nor toilet paper. The heating wasn't working (I travelled during winter) and the ride on both sides of the border was very bumpy due to bad tracks. The worst thing of this trip is the customs check at the Turkish/Bulgarian border after midnight where you'll need to get off the train and wait for more than one hour to get your passport stamped.

You were lucky to have taken this train when you did, because just a couple of years ago the fare would have been in the region of £50.00, but because the Lira has dropped so drastically, the fare has reduced in price for those using foreign currency.

@@paulthiel5145 There';s no argument about it! I agree with you. However, the cost of living in Turkey, eve when the Lira was buoyant, was far lower than here in the UK, so it was always relatively more expensive for the locals.

Skiing in Turkey a possibility it seems, if only a remote one? Well who knew eh!
Agree that for what you got ( quality of sleeper car, sans shower or not, the pretty well specked bed and lets not forget the minibar fridge!!!) I think you'd be hard pressed to beat it on quality V cost. Yes of course there's way superior sleeper services but they also cost X factor more and 'pound-for-pound' likely don't match what was on offer here.

You can see -30 C in eastern parts of Turkey. So, we have skiing resorts a lot actually. This year was especially cold. There was snow even in İzmir, which is rare as it is a coastal city.
