Hello and welcome to Norway, for my first review from this interesting Scandinavian country!
Today we will be taking GoAhead Nordic's excellent sleeper train service, in a private compartment from Stavanger, in the Norwegian Fjords, across to the capital, Oslo, so I hope you enjoy the video!

Norwegian sleeper looks so clean and immaculately maintained inside and out. Nice shots of Oslo and Central Station reminds me of my unforgettable trip to Norway and the breathtaking Fjords in 2012. Thanks for sharing.
They are 30 years old, and are due for scrapping withing the next 5-7 years.

I took a train from Oslo to the airport in the snow and it was one of the most peaceful beautifulest train rides I’ve ever done!
Lol, I take that train ride (20 minutes) every christmas, and yes, it is quite something in snow and sunny weather. Nothing special the rest of the year though.

Stavanger is an awesome city. Plenty to do and thr people there are extremely friendly. I've never heard of this sleeper train but if it's integrated within the Interrail network I might try it soon 😁

Interrail or no interrail doesn’t matter. Train is very cheap.
Oslo Central Station did ot open in 1987, but in 1980, the same year as the tunnel you came out of when the train arrived. Before that, there was Oslo East and Oslo West (The West station still remained open until 1989, though). The big central hall was opened in 1987 though, and the Airport Express terminal (where those train actually don't run from anymore) in the late 90's.
A lot of tired students on the train with the red ”russefeiring” gear on returning from Stavanger to Oslo 😎

Wow! Those coaches look so clean I could easily believe that they are brand new! That's the trouble with sleepers, you are lucky to get any views of the countryside. Nice video.
They are about 50 years old. They get overhauls/refurbishments from time to time. The little cell phone holder near the charging port used to be for brochures, but they worked so well for cell phones they just stuck them in. They probably cost 1£ each, but man were they worth it!

I love Norway, my favorite foreign country on the whole planet.
I didn't take any sleepers but I did take the Bergenbanen from Bergen to Oslo. I also took the train from Oslo to Trondheim. If I could move to Norway, I would move to Trondheim. It is beautiful, peaceful, and uncrowded.

Norske Tog (the state owned train/carriage owner) is in the process of replacing the long distance trains. But there's also a new class being introduced to Go-Ahead, Vy and SJ, reclining seats as a mix between regualr seeting and the cabins. GA already runs trains with these, SJ is soon to follow. Vy is coming a bit later this year, but they will introduce fully lie flat seats (business class style).

The coolest thing VY has is still the refurbished Swiss cabin cars, which gives you 2 sofas and 2 bunks for 3000, which holds six people. It's really cheap if you're a group, you get power outlet, and the ability to lie down if you want and it just feels better.
The sleeper cars were made in the 1970s, and they've been refurbished several times. It's interesting how long rolling stock lasts if you take good care of it. A bus lasts what, 10 years, and these bad boys are pushing 50... :O
@@HrHaakon Yeah, one of the recent purchase made by Vy to increase beds on night trains (and add a more private cabin on day trips). But very excited to see who wins the current competition to deliver new trains. Stadler, Alstom, CAF or Talgo.
Love Oslo, been twice from Australia. So much to see walking around, the Opera House, Frogner Park, the Palace, Akershus Fort & the Viking ship museum. But I flew everywhere, particularly up to Bodø & back. Maybe the train next time.

I think you were wise to take the sleeper compartment. The seats may be comfortable in the standard fare cars but the second one was very noisy and both were very bright. The train and compartment overall were all one could want, as I'd expect in Norway.

Great video there in my maternal grandfathers birthplace of Norway. He was from Oslo. My late parents visited Norway in the summer of 1985 and stayed with my late mothers first cousins. On my mothers side of my family there is Viking & Laplander ancestry, my late fathers side of my family is Celtic, Iberian & Moor so I’m what can be called a salad.

Sleepered to Berge, Stavanger and Trondheim many times. Always an excellent journey; you wake up in the respective city centre in time for the working day, without having to leave home at 04:00 to get the first plane... nice, simple food onboard, little bottle of wine, and a great zed.
Did you notice - the train changes direction in Kristiansand, so the sleeper cars go in first and comes out last...

It's not about speed...
It wouldnt make economic sense. Norway is about as big as Germany in size, but where Germany has a population of 84 million, Norway has a population of just above 5 million (with most of them concentrated in the south, especially around the Oslo area).
We do have some high speed (200km/h is defined as high speed, so not GREAT speed) rail but it's very few stretches. It's slowly being built out but it will take decades. The environmental gain is greates for freight rail which doesn't need high speed, so there's no real push for it over the longer distances. And tourist lines like Bergen - Oslo are more valuable going ~100km/h cruisin slow enough that you can take in the views.
If you just want to get there quick the planes are 45 minutes + airport hassle. And there are ongoing experiments in electrifying the airways too, but those are very early stages.
@@samuelhakansson6680 norwegians travel a lot more than the average european which means high speed rail connecting the largest cities would actually be economical especially if you mix freight traffic, if we get the travel time down to below 3 hours we could shut down the flights going between the cities which does a lot for helping the climate

6:05 you have to que in the dining car to get the key to your compartment from a grumpyattendant. and they issue you with a ticket for a bottle of water! on the whole a good product - with very unusual 'welcome'

I have taken a sleeper Trondheim-Oslo, Trondheim-Oslo via Røros (terminated), Trondheim-Bodø, Trondheim-Mo i Rana (terminated), a through sleeper from Narvik to Southern Sweden, Oslo-Bergen, Oslo-Stavanger, Oslo-kristiansand (terminated) and Oslo-Copenhagen (terminated). If including coach I have taken the night train to Åndalsnes and Arendal too. And if including corresponding, I have taken a train from Trondheim to the Swedish border and boarded a waiting sleeper (terminated). The ones I never took before being terminated was the sleeper to Flåm, Mosjøen, and Oslo-Stockholm.

In Kristiansand last week, got a half of Nya Carniegiebryggeriet 144 NOK in other words £11.04 so yeah £22 a pint for craft beer, found premium pilsners around the £8 to £9 a pint mark.

I am wondering what the train drives think of the swiss lok Re465 (EL18) that they drive. Is it a good engine or is it giving many troubles?

I was in Stavanger in 2012 for summer vacations, currently im living in Kirkenes.
I would suggest you take the VY sleeper train from Oslo-Bergen next it is one of the most beatifull and breathtaking lines in the world and in the end you end up in Bergen Gateway to the Fjords

Great video, just what I was looking for. We are cruising to Stavanger next May and want to hike Pulpit Rock. The hike is not offered as an excursion so we plan to do it on our own and then take this night from Stavanger to Oslo and rejoin the ship there. Does this train go 7-days a week and where is the best place to get information? I would want to be sure that we can make it from one port to another. Thank you!

I've travelled this route several times, but that was 40 years ago. The compartments and beds were a lot more spartan, and if you travelled alone you'd be almost certain to share with somebody else. How times have changed.

Just what I was thinking. Forty years ago the train to Bergen was very basic...although I did manage to sleep in my seat. Love seeing Norway again xxx from New Zealand ( where we have our own beautiful but very uninhabited fjords).

I used to take the sleeper from Copenhagen in the 80s, but now a single ticket is more than twice what it cost to drive my little C1 car both there and back…

The sleeper cars used in Norway are the widest sleeper cars used on standard gauge railways, anywhere in the world, they are 3.24m wide.
Interestingly enough, the electrical part of the EL 18 isn't derived from the Re 460, but from the German Br 101, you can also hear that when it's departing. Other than that, great video! Really looking forward to the Bergensbanen video 😍

No, you might thin kthat because the Br101 and the Re460 are the first Locos that use IGBTs to drive the Traction motors, the electrical Part isnt from a German DB101, its from a BLS465, a higher power variant from a normal Re460; de.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSB_El_18#:~:text=Der%20elektrische%20Teil%20entspricht%20im%20Wesentlichen%20den%20f%C3%BCr%20die%20BLS%20gebauten%20Re%E2%80%AF465. Sadly that part is only writen into the German Article
@@jannickcst Maybe I kinda misformulated what I was trying to say. The 101s, the SBB RABDe 500 and El 18 all use water-cooled ADtranz Camilla inverters (and yes, the 101 actually doesn't use IGBTs as the main inverters), which you can also tell by the frequencies they use and the modulation method they use.

It hurts me as a swede to admit this since swedes and danes has tried to steal Norways thunder for such a long time: But vikings came orginally from Norway. This video proves it beyond any doubt. The fjords FORCED the vikings to make boats to be able to travel inside Norway crossing the hundreds of fjords in Norway. Sweden and Denmark are both without fjords - so there was no need to invent boats there. Your video just made me realize this fact.

in 2008,2009 and 2010 i took this train from moi to oslo every holiday becuase i went to a folkhighscool in moi. but never been in the sleeper train though. no need to spend money on that when i sleep well in the seat as well

To get to the far north (Narvik), you have to take the sleeper train from Stockholm. There's no direct link from Oslo

@@NonstopEurotrip Yes, there is no direct link, but you probably save alot of time by taking a train up to Bodø, from where there is a bus service up to Narvik (if that is your final destination)- the train ride to Stockholm takes at least 6 hours, and it is a bit in the wrong direction. Besides, what do you mean by "all the way up north"? Narvik is the northernmost trainstation in Norway (and possibly in the Nordic countries in general)-if you want to go to North Cape (northernmost point on mainland Europe), you need to go by plain or bus/car/boat (Norway`s "Hurtigruten", or coastal steamer, goes from Bergen and all the way up to Kirkenes, close to the Russian border, and you can hop on and off at various places)
@@bjrnjensen7074 Wrong. No one takes the train to Bodø to then take a bus further north. They take the train to Fauske, where busses to Narvik and Sortland will be waiting right next to the train platform. Bodø is a dead end by road, unless you go south along the coast ("Kystriksveien"), meaning you MUST travel via Fauske anyway if going by bus.
Btw, North Cape is probably Norway's biggest lie, at least in tourism. First, it's on an island (Magerøya), not the mainland. Second, Knivskjellodden on the very same island is it's northmost point. Northmost point on the mainland, is Kinnarodden, quite a bit to the east, north/northwest of Mehamn.
