The art of stick fighting really teaches the necessity not to flinch. You can't block what you can't see. I remember going to the boxing gym when I was about 12 years old and getting in close and Swinging for the fences with my eyes closed well I got hit plenty but the gloves had padding those sticks don't have any padding.
