Building the Worlds longest piano

- A small collection of photos put together documenting the building of the Alexander piano to the music of Bach's Jesu Joy of Mans Desiring, played by Hyperion Knight.
I Asked my piano teacher how long a plain wire would have to be to make the low A note. This led to an experiment in the back yard, from this I was determined to make a piano at this time I was 15. Little did know I would actually start making it a year later. I started building the piano when I was 16 years old after a generous neighbor up the road offered me her one car garage, she liked to see creativity and also gave me some timber! the piano is as long as that shed 5.7 meters, as the months went on interest started to grow until the project gained huge support of the community until completion.
Completed 4 April 2009. Alpine Farm, Maungati, New Zealand.

Thanks for your kind words!
@@alexanderpianos1038 but you did an amazing work! Beatiful!
You've earned my respect! Excellent job for trying things! Thank you!
Without words this video won't go anywhere without Explanation.
This piano is very interesting but more information is needed.
I can help with the physics.
The bass is in a class of its own. No other piano can hold a candle to it.
What an amazing build. You did a very good job documenting the process.
Thank you!
Such amazing dedication. Thank you for sharing!!
Utterly exquisite; may this great piano stand for the next thousand years as a testament to its superior construction and may it continue to mesmerize those who listen to its divine acoustics for another thousand years hence.
It's not very popular here but pianists come from all over to play on it

Congratulations! What a great achievement!
An amazing labour of love, Steinway and Yamaha had better look to their laurels ?!🧐
Wait. Possibly the greatest piano ever made was built by a teenager, in a chook shed, in the wilds of New Zealand?? Not by Steinway or Fazioli, or some other unpronounceable big name with a huge factory, full of specialist tools, and dozens of employees with hundreds of years of experience between them, somewhere in Europe's cultural heart? I am completely blown away and, as an Australian, incredibly proud of you mate. I'm also sickeningly disappointed with myself and the lack of progress with my own projects. Well done bro. Your name will be remembered.
Wow what a comment thank you! Cant wate to build another! Come visit!
Interesting to see, how you have build it together!
I just read your story. Props man. Alot of us had wild ideas as kids. You pulled it off.
I think if I had waited a year it would have never happened
Luxurious 🙏🏻🤗 And incredible 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This pianoforte has been built to last into later centuries; congratulations on your fine vision!😊
I watched this piano being built. And wated in anticipation firvthe first notes. There was so much interest from the comunity. We were all amazed.
Marvellous, with the original Magic Piano Sound preserved.
Wow !
Tough to drill that pin block.
40mm plate steel! Holes were bored twice. It took forever!
Фантастика!!! И звук-то какой изумительный! Здорово!
Thanks
Absolutely incredible work!
A genius
You are a very useful engine! 👍
Congratulations! It deserves a concert hall.
Speechless! Simply, well done!
magnificent work. congratulations. and enjoy it!
Thank you
this deserves so much more attention oh my god..
Thank you for your kind words!
Try and get Peter Buka to one day be one of the ones who play the Alexander piano!!
Amazing build !
Amazing, but let's come back in a year of moderate use and see how well it has stayed in tune. Something tells me this instrument is going to need some additional support by adding a middle leg.
It gets tuned several times a year mainly before a concert or recording. The piano is 14 years old now
I don't quite understand the reason for building such a long piano. I admire the time and effort that went into its construction but to my ears it doesn't sound any better than a standard-sized well-built grand piano. If the goal is mainly to build the longest (and largest) piano, why not build the next one to be 25 feet long?
How long did it take for everything?
4 and a half years, then there was bitsxand pieces changed after the first concert, it has evolved, there is somewhere a DVD of that first concert
@@alexanderpianos1038 👍🏻🙏🏻🤗
Did you make the frame from steel instead of cast iron? But cast iron does not give parasitic resonance.
Steel, there doesn't seem to be any problems
So clear bass
Congratulations ! What a great work !
How long is this Piano ?
Thank you 18 foot 9
So it all started with the question: how long would an unwound A0 need to be? I havent seen where you answered it. So how long is A0, and is it a bare unwound string? If not, how long is the lowest unwound note?
It was 22 foot
the pictures gives Australia vibes.
Close but not quite
Kiwi Build 👍
Where does it say how long it is?
What country are you in ?
New Zealand

Hello Little sister
Your in this vid!
Sounds like an baroque organ...
By the way if you miss your bike helmet I know where it is 😂
It was in the piano!
what type of fabrication knowledge did you have before doing this??
Limitted, I had barely started work. I could weld, This is where I learned how to weld vertical welds with stick, everything is 20mm+ steel so you can't really go wrong joining 2 bits of plate together, a bit of warpage to consider
