How To | Finger Detangling Natural Hair for Length Retention
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 лип 2015
- Hey y'all! This is a tutorial on how I finger detangle my thick 4B and 4C natural hair to promote length retention and a healthy hair journey! My routine will also show you how to detangle matted roots, and remove knots and tangles. Finger detangling is both natural hair and transitioning hair friendly, because you're not snagging through tangles and knots that combs or brushes would normally do. I hope you find this helpful! xo

Let me pay EXTRA close attention to this and take notes lol
Gorgeous, gorgeous hair! What a pretty, lovely woman you are.The water is beading on your hair. Your fabulous mane of hair is a great example of non-porous hair. When water beads on the hair like it shows in this video, it's a sign of an intact hair structure (cuticle/cortex/medulla). The longer one keeps that physical [hair] structure in place, the better one's chances of gaining and retaining long, health length. Regarding your hair, there is probably a minimum of cuticle loss, and thus the hair strand is in place and undamaged. Your detangling process is a huge part of that success. Your hair so healthy and beautiful. Bravo! You have an excellent depth of understanding of the principles of WHY to finger detangle and you provide very clear directions to your viewers. Not only is your information on point, the video is beautifully photographed as well. Congratulations on the wonderful progress of your hair! See you when you are at waist length, as you will soon be there! I have no doubt about that.
Thank you so much!!! What a sweet (and very informative) comment :-) 💓 I truly appreciate it!
You are welcome. Keep doing what you do. You are helping and inspiring a lot of people.
You've done a beautiful job maintaining your strands!
Moiyshee Thank you so much! :-)
When she said “any possible frustrations later”, I felt that
Dang it’s crazy how time flies. I remember just going on my natural hair journey in 2014 and turning to videos like these. I remember watching this specific video😂 And now after 8 years I’m back bc I got neglectful and disrespected my hair and am trying to grow it back to the way it was thriving when I was using her hair advice.
So much gorgeous thick long hair :)
Thank you! :-)
I am so so so glad I stumbled across your channel today. I have very fine and wispy 4a hair that tangles like nothing I have ever seen. Lol. Cob webs tangles and cutting out knots are things I am not unfamiliar with lol. I have spent 5 years of my hair journey trying to detangle my hair like I see other 3b-4a naturals on UA-cam do it and I never knew how much I was breaking, further tangling and damaging my hair until this year. Those tangles that tighten into crazy knots in the middle of your hair shaft because of 1 shed hair (-__-) are the bane of my existence so thank you for thoroughly explaining and showing how you combat that healthily. I have grown to understand that my hair simply NEEDS an hour of detangling to do it the right way and that was the best thing that I could have done for it. Again thank you for sharing your hair maintenance routine with us. It really helps!!
Kenya J OMG Kenya J, I have the same problems than you T___T I'm so happy someone else is struggling with detangling... I have those Cob webs all around my hair : ( I think I need to detange way more often than only wash day. What is your new routine ? ^__^ and... do you dare to cut those knots even when they are near your roots ? : o : o I'm so afraid of cutting all knots and losing hair (and lenght, and whatever)
Hey girl! Yeah waiting too long to detangle was one of the biggest problems I had to overcome. A year ago I would wait 7-12 days to detangle, so of course on wash day my hair would be CRAZY matted and tangled from all of the shed hairs that had collected amongst my strands. My new regimen consists of detangling every 3-4 days (and the absolute max I will go without detangling now is 5 days but that is only if I wear my hair in my two corn rows for three days and then wear a loose braid out for 2 days). Simply detangling more frequently has made wash day less of a nightmare because I don't have to fight my hair. I have an IG where you can find my full hair care routine,@curlsjadore.
And I try my best to prevent those knots from even happening but if they do, I have come to accept that you just have to cut them out. It sucks but it is just the nature of kinky-coily hair. However I have noticed that I get way more of those knots when I am rushing through my detangling session. When I take my time I can pull the tangles apart strand by strand instead of just yanking my hair and allowing the cobwen tangle to tighten into a multiple knots.
Thank you sooooo much! I am detangling my hair today and this method is working for me! It took me almost an hour for two sections but I had to stop when my baby woke up from his nap. I have six sections left. Sigh. Now that I have a great method, I won't wait so long to detangle and it shouldn't take as long next time.
Yay!! I'm so glad it worked for you :-) ❤️
HairCandy Kina yes!! This video was a god send!!
U remind me of Cicely Tyson and Kimberly Elise!!! 2 great actresses. Anyway, thx for this tutorial. I'm taking notes!
Beautiful hair!
Sara McIntosh I've heard of the Cicely Tyson comparison, but never Kimberly Elise! They are both such talented actresses indeed, and very beautiful! Thank you. And I'm glad the video was helpful :-)
This hits different now that she’s gone 🥲
I just realised you post videos like every 2-4 years girl why ?!?!!!! I just subscribed and I’m really enjoying your videos
I'm so glad you're back!! Your hair is gorgeous.
TheElegantRatchet Thank you so much! I'm glad to be back :-)
Thanks for THIS! The "cobwebs" reference really helped. I thought I was crazy. Thankfully I will not have to cut so much if any.
This is by far the most informative video for detangling. I mean step by step instructions helped alot. Thanks for sharing. This truly helps.
Yay! I'm glad :/) I am a details kind of person with everything that I do lol

Rosefloria Yes, Rose! Patience is truly THAT virtue, and thank you :-)
A huge smile spread across my face when I saw your video in my subscription feed. Lovely job explaining the entire detangling process! You and your hair are absolutely gorgeous! 😊😊😊
maiahopes Aww, thank you so much! I really appreciate that :-)
7 years late, but thank you for this video. I dread finger detangling, but realizing I just need to suck it up in order to achieve my goal. Love your hair!
You have such beautiful hair! I've just binge watched all your videos. You're my hair twin! :D I'm six months natural and so far I am loving it. Keep the videos coming, your hair is giving me all kinds of life girl!
Those videos are on the way, Charlene! Thank you :-)
This is the best detangling video I've watched. Thanks for the inspiration for my own hair journey.
Glad to be of help! :-)
fantastic video! your instruction and descriptions were great. very easy to understand and follow. thank you!
Yaaaay you're back ! & your hair is still lovely !! Nice video :)
Beautifully Kinky Yes, I am back!! Thank you :-)
I am so trying this! I've always used my denman, and i get a lot of hair loss, and it's hard me to retain length and definition. I have 4b/4c hair too, so this is definitely going into my likes!!!
Omg I think I found my hair twin!! Please keep me posted on everything that you do to your hair because I'm stalking you now.
Dominique roberts Haha, I literally LOLed. Thank you so much, Dominique!
thank you for this demonstration. AND also for showing how much hair you shed during the process. This is the one thing that has remained a mystery. It's always hard to know whether the amount you shed is normal or not. So seeing yours was a relief.
I just discovered your channel. I love it! My wash day is just like yours, finger detantangling has saved my kinks for a year now. I don't even know where my combs are anymore, and my kinks has been thanking me.
I will upload a video on my channel for my wash day routine, I wash my hair in the detangled twists by spraying the shampoo in my scalp and massaging it in.
So I both clarify and condition in 1 step.
Loving your length hun.
Simply Being Nina Thank you, Nina! I'm so glad that someone else is also a finger detangling advocate! :-) And washing/conditioning in sections saves my hair too lol
I can't stop re-watching this vid. AMAZING!
I love your videos! i just went natural this year and seeing videos like this helps me out ALOT lol. i love your hair and i hope to see more videos from you!
This is my hair type! So nice to see you😊
I've been waiting on a new vid! Great to see you're back!
shaniceaj I'm glad to be back! Thank you for sticking around :-)
Great video! Glad to have come across another 4c hair chica! I have been natural for almost three years now and found that finger detangling is more effective and less harmful than using hair tools like combs. I did have a bit of a recent set back when I let my near bra strap length hair get matted. I eventually cut my hair to a tiny TWA because I didn't have the patience to detangle over a period of days or weeks. I have found that what makes detangling easier when my low porosity dense 4c hair hasn't been neglected is dampening my hair with water, putting a little moisture rich conditioner and slathering on coconut oil that's in its creamy state and leaving it in overnight. When I detangle the next day, my hair is so soft and full of slip that the shed hairs and tangles come out with a simple glide of my fingers. Glad to see you do a similar routine.
Naptural Everly Hey, Everly! Our setbacks can definitely become stepping stones! And thank you so much for sharing your suggestions! We definitely have a very similar routine :-)
OMG “Passenger” ☺️☺️☺️☺️. My favourite artist. Also you’re my hair twin. You’ve scored yourself a new subbie 😃
Hey Taiwo ! Been obsessed with your journey love your channel
***** Thank you sooo much, Rainy! I hope all is well with you
This video is everything I do in life! hahaha great tutorial and depictions! Such a great quality video!
NG's Evidence Yass! Finger detangling is a wonderful alternative to detangling hair. Thank you! :-)
Yayyy Taiwo I love it!! U are truly hair goals for me right now. I cannot seem to grow hair in the back and I have thin 4c hair. Imma have to start finger detangling to help with this issue. Stay blessed!
TheOliviab1 Thank you, Olivia! Please give finger detangling a try! When it comes to finer, thinner strands of hair, finger detangling can definitely be more beneficial since the hair is more fragile. You stay blessed too :-)
i just came across your video and really appreciate it. You truly shed light on how to finger detangle natural hair. I have 3C hair that tangles like crazy and I must admit I get frustrated detangling it. I recently bought a denman brush to help in the process. I am going to try your routine. It looks like it will work for me. Thank you very much for very detailed and informative video. By the way, you have beautiful, healthy thick hair. ;-)
Thank you, Judith! I'm so glad that you enjoyed this video and found it helpful :-)
We have the same curl pattern!
Your hair is so beautiful, just like you!
Thank you for this video, because I really needed it!!!
😘😘😘
Love this video. Usually people do not show the cobweb effect nor even the simple knot on the one strand in their videos. You did an awesome job showing depth. Love you hair texture, mines, I believe is similiar. Well done.
Thank you so much, Ashley! I appreciate that! :-)
i truly love your hair!

Your hair is beautiful
Laura K Thank you, Laura!

Brilliant tutorial. I will be giving this a try instead of comb detangling.
shadele17 Thank you :-) Do try it!
This was such a helpful video. I'm glad I've found you. 😁
New subscriber 🙋👏✌
you and your hair are soo beautiful! *heart eyes*
I have a problem with my hair. I dont have 4c hair texture. But i dont know my hair texture either. It shrinks when i wash it. Its not really kinky. I am going to try the shea butter recipe you had on. Because i like how your hair has grown. I hope it grows as yours did and becomes healthier. You have amazing eyebrows.
Girl, how long this take you? I love how patient you are!
Great technique! Thanks for sharing!
Your hair has grown so much they look very healthy. More videos plz.lolol

my exact hair type. thank you for this!!
hello! I really like your channel and its simplicity! my hair is finally growing longer and I was wondering if you often wear your hair down or do protective styles often? I don't know if it makes a difference with hair touching clothing when worn out? Thanks so much and blessings!
subscribed!❤❤ loves your videos so inspirational!
you get THAT MUCH new growth in a month?? HOW? 😭
Erica Genetics
Erica it could also be slippage from when your roots are twisted too loose
Thank somuch for teaching me that thumb method trick it really helps to naturally separate the strands .b4 this i felt like i was riping through my hair with my fingers Thank you somuch BEAUTIFUL 🤗🤗🤗😍😍😍😊

MJsLiberianGyrl Thank you! And yes, I will be uploading more regularly!
Very helpful, I'm going to start exclusively finger detangling, Ive received a lot of breakage over the years from usings brushes
Awesome! Finger detangling exclusively will take some time getting used to, but the practice is definitely worthwhile :-)
Great post!
Well hello hair twin! Excellent excellent video Tai!
Thank you, Geraldine!! :-)
finally, I found my near identical hair type
This was very helpful to me, thank you!
No problem!! :-)

Taiwo Kafilat Your hair is gorgeous, thanks for sharing
Thank you :-)
great video! i seem to leave my two strands in longer than expected as well!
Lol, yes! I always tell myself that I'll only leave them in for two weeks. Yet that never happens!
omggg. thank you for this!
Hi, sorry if already asked and responded to but how did you cleanse your hair, if at all, during the month wearing the small twists?
I really want to start trying this but I feel like that would take up most of my day lol.
+Destiny Johnson It won't though because once you put something in it to help detangle it all goes fast pretty quick. My texture is similar to hers it takes me maybe 15-20 minutes to do my whole head.
15-20min that's it? I might give it a try then😄👍
+Destiny Johnson It is time consuming but it gets easier and quicker once you get the hang of it and you've been doing it for a while.
Destiny Johnson also depends on how thick your hair is.
Great Video.
Thx for Sharing
hi there! I'm new to your channel and my hair is similar to yours (4b/c). I want to thank you for this video, every single time I have wash day or do a detangle session so much of my hair comes out with the denmen brush and comb. My hair is almost impossible for me to part considering how thick it is but I think it has a lot to do with me not spending enough time to detangle it. I've done finger detangling in the past when my hair was much shorter and I noticed a huge difference in the breakage. I think I should go back to just finger detangling.
Hey! I'm glad that this video was helpful to you. Yes, finger detangling is much more gentler on the hair--less breakage and more retention of hair!
