    Kirk Giordano Plastering Inc.
    In this video, we share while showing and explaining how to break out and lath a small stucco patch stucco in a removed air conditioning unit.
    The right way to attach stucco lath to existing paper and wire, with tieing in existing stucco.
    Attention all, this method is the best for installing new windows and doors; note this method has been used for many years and will be ageless even beyond 2022.
    Howdy, guys and gals; in this video, I explain the best tool or method for breaking out stucco on a wall sheathed with an exterior gypsum sheathing, or you can call it sheetrock or drywall, the same stuff.
    Whether installing new windows or doors, any roto-hammer is your tool.
    We use a battery-operated rotary hammer such as the Milwaukee for all our stucco breakouts for their convenience, not having to look for electrical outlets, and the drag unwinding and rewinding up extension cords.
    FYI, gypsum board, sheetrock, and drywall are the same. It’s gypsum with different skins or paper.
    Since around the early 90, most folks have been required to be code compliant, with exterior sheer wall backing, plywood sheathing, or OSB board.

    Kirk - thanks for all the videos for all of us DIY'ers. I wanted to share a break-out method that worked pretty well for me. It's probably not the best if you're doing a large breakout, but it worked for the smaller job I did in replacing two windows. I used a pneumatic palm nailer. Again, probably not the best tool because dust/stucco could enter the small crevices and damage the nailer...but it was the best option available. I picked one up from Harbor Freight for about $20 so it was worth the risk. BTW, I finished the breakout and the palm nailer still works great.

Replacing stucco finished old Ca beach, aluminum crank window frame. a second time. 19 year old vinyls installed within the old frames. Getting moisture and some mold from moisture inside. I think I need to remove old frames , reflash and water proof and install new size window with out old alum frames to prevent moisture issues. I need to redo before winter. IF the sheet rock material is already damaged under the stucco, whats the best material to fill in the spaces after removing the loose bits of sheet rock?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  10 років тому

      Evening Slap Stick, the easiest way is to just add extra stucco to fill the gap.
      If you want to recreate the original exterior type of so called exterior gypsum board or sheetrock any sheetrock should do as long as what you do afterwards is watertight.
      No need for green or purple board which is mold and moisture resistant as moisture should not go through your new two ply paper anyway.

    Hey Kirk! What are your thoughts on growing ivy up a stucco wall? I hear people say that ivy can damage and pull stucco off, but it seems like it would only happen if you try to rip it off of an existing crack or weak spot. Many thanks as always!!!

    • @StuccoPlastering

      Howdy Keith, here's the fact, few plants lath themselves to wood or stucco as well as Ivy, it looks pretty and it is, however when the rains come it saturates this plant, the root or buds that attach stay wet for sometimes six months, this continued dampness is not good for wood or stucco.

    Hi Kirk, I'm going to have to tackle this right after I remove the ac wall unit. Can I use an angle grinder with a carbide blade to cut through the stucco, or will it be too difficult to control the depth of the blade? I certainly don't want to cut through the existing lathe and underlayment.

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  Місяць тому +1

      @@billbradley6380 you can just the blade with a circular saw to half inch, then rough up the edges. Or type in how to break out stucco, Jason and I prefer rotary-hammers.

    • @billbradley6380

      @@StuccoPlasteringI finally got started on it this weekend. I forgot to ask what to do if the opening is close to a window? Close to the left side of where the ac unit used to be is a window with a strip of old stucco/cement that's less than 2 inches wide between them. I'm concerned that thin strip is going to fall apart if I start cutting or chipping at it. Should I break out the other three sides and leave that side alone?

    • @StuccoPlastering

    Kirk i took a window out of a stucco wall and now need to inclose the void to match the existing stucco wall. Do you put the paper over studs with insulation between studs? If so than do you just tack the paper to the studs because there is no backing, am I right. My main question is, can I use roofing felt instead of double building paper, as I have a roll of the heavy felt left over from a previous job? Lastly, is that tool you call bulldog a rotohammer for breaking out. Please address all three questions and thx for all your knowledge you generously share. Renee (female journeyman carpenter)

    • @StuccoPlastering
