Folks, this, is how to install stucco stop door trim molding so it is waterproof and your walls don't leak; this is perhaps one of the most important videos we have done.
Avoid rainwater intrusion!
These wooden "Stucco Stops" are found at Home Depot, but they are sold only in 20-foot lengths, Thus I could not never find them. It was my son, Jason who realized this fact.
Regardless of how goofy I may present this information.
I could go on for hours about all the issues I have witnessed regarding folks not understanding the importance of such a simple thing as using flashing as a gasket before installing wood trim to doors, windows, etc.
We don't create fear so much as common sense; thus, the amount of wood rot and other damage; this simple and too often common mistake has been made is infinite.
An example is the so-called wise guys who feel they can just caulk the inner and outer sides to fuse the paper and wood together to save time, but won't save time.
They neglect that the two top miters can never be fused, or at least not for long or permanently.
Thus, ensure you and your workers, whether handypersons or licensed professionals, correct the paper, plastic, or rubber membranes. When doing this, please think of the leaking hose that I intentionally loosened a hair to prove this point of what will happen during the first rain.
As a rule, we use Sika-Flex 1A, a professional-grade polyurethane caulking; what does that mean? It's an adhesive sealant.
I have rebuilt brick walls with this caulking, but that's another story.
• Expanding foam or back... Repair cracks in cement stucco walls or chimneys.
• Repair cracks in inter... Repair cracks in interior cement plaster walls; Rains cause cracking. Are your new cement stucco walls leaking? Perhaps it's not the walls but, instead, the missing door or window flashing?
I have so much faith in Kirks plastering skill... I would never question his glasses being upside down,he knows his stuff upside down ,right side up , sideways and backwards.
Good morning Eva, you are too kind, thank you.👩
Ha, ha! You're not only a master teacher, Kirk but a great entertainer. Makes these lessons fast and fun to watch.
Good morning World Commander, no wonder you command the world, thank you for the kind comment.
So true
Flashing is an underrated topic
Mold remediation is founded on that statement

Seam tape is a nice add
Morning Pintobean Dude, Exzackory. 💃
I Love the upside down glasses! Bifocals for looking up!!! :~)
LOL, they are just glass for keeping dust out the old eyeballs.👀
Man, I gotta wear them that way more often,👁
Thank you very much Kirk for your videos!!! 🤝🤝🤝
Evening Alan, your welcome
As soon as he says something is just to prove a point....I'm at full attention.

Morning Angel, thank you sweetie, what a pretty thing to say. I do enjoy our work.💃🏻
Kirk makes it look so easy I thought I could do this but I ended up hiring a pro. When I screwed up big time!!!! I would’ve hired Kirk if he was local.
That happens to us all, us too sometimes.🕵🏼
You guys are the best. The family has gotten big!! Congrats and keep up the good work 💯
Thank you, Matthew.
You the man Kirk 💪💪💪
Hello my friend, thank you.😉
Thanks Kirk 🙏🏽🇺🇸👍
Larry, no problemo.😉
Thank you, kind sir. I just installed a fancy new door and was wondering how to seal the outside. You're my go to stucco encyclopedia.

The story at the end is priceless

No doubt, as he scribbled on the so-called home and auto insurance which are such scam insurances, he must have known if I had a claim, I'd have to hire an attorney to get them to pony up any dough. 👨🏻🔬
Kirk,
I think at the end of every video you do, you should end with, “remember, if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.”
Kinda like Risinger goofball farewell at the end of his videos.
Good evening friend; I wore that statement out in this video. ua-cam.com/video/chU9So3vy9s/v-deo.html/ 🕺🏽

No problem 👍
Good stuff 👍

Great door seal and trim which will last till Christ returns◆Journeyman carpenter says TY KIRK!
Howdy mr. Davis, exzackory. or at least untill the cows come home. 🍻
Something is odd with Kirk, I'm opening another beer ,,,,
OK I'll finish the video, got a feeling he's onto something
OK that 2nd beer really helped, it's the glasses, and I even know why ,,,,,
Long weekend in Canada, hot and sunny on the wet coast,, whater' the poor people doing today ??
It's Saturday, we're drinking beer and talking about how bad off we are.
Okay, we're hanging out on a hot beach in the tropics with margaritas in our hands.
Or is that postive thinking? Or my imagination running away with me. ua-cam.com/video/M5Z9-QCmZyw/v-deo.html.💃🏻
Great education Kirk, on this and every other one! One question about this one: When you fill in the stucco on the left side of the door, how do you connect/attach the new stucco to the smooth edge of the existing stucco. Do you use Larson Weld Crete here to help with the bonding? And do you fill out the stucco to be flush with the existing stucco, or is the new stucco recessed?
KISS...Keep It Simple Stupid...the motto I was always told in my carpentry days
Exzackory,🍻
Hi Kirk, I've been caring for a guest house that was built on our property by the previous owners, and I've relied almost exclusively on your help for the stucco repairs. Thank you so much for the help you've already given me. I am now facing a pretty significant issue, and curious what the pros would do. I replaced an exterior door and knocked out about 6" around it to improve the underlay to the doorframe. I discovered that the house wrap stops about 4" above the foundation, leaving the bottom of the plywood sheath exposed directly to the stucco. This has resulted in a crack in the stucco around the entire house, presumably from the swelling plywood. I am in a very dry climate, so the water intrusion has been rare. No mold or significant rot if I were guessing.
I've narrowed my options down to the following:
A) rip the entire house back to plywood and do it right (I am wondering if I can trust the house wrap at all anymore)
B) knockout about 6" above and below the plywood/foundation joint, flash tape under the wrap and over the foundation and mud it up again (this would let me add a weep edge as well)
C) pretend I didn't see the plywood, mud it up as-is, and repaint the entire house with elastomeric paint (then just trust the paint to shed water properly)
I don't know how you guys manage to answer so many questions, but thanks in advance if you make it to this one.
Also cheers again for putting so much out there to help folks, sharing knowledge like this is one of the best uses of the internet.
-Troy
Howdy Troy, the questions are easy, that’s how. It not you guys it me, I enjoy doing so. If it were me I’d prep the house well then apply a primer and quality paint such as Renew, by stucco-flex. That should give you over 30 year’s protections.
@@StuccoPlastering 👍 Thank you sir.
I would love to lathe inside a house, in the old school style for plaster...just need a pouch and hatchet hammer, I would even consider doing it for free 😅 atleast once.
Morning Mac Dude, that is kinda fun, we have done it about 50 times.👨🏻🔬
Isn't that nice Kirk the little one saved you a ton of writers cramp. You'r a good man Kirk, now did you silicone the rest of the joints above and on the door hinge side?
howdy Duck Dude, no Polyurethane, I save the silicone for my fish tanks.💃🏻
Those glasses hurt my eyes!
LOL,
Looking for trim with double rabbet for 1948 ranch house.
Trim seems to be 1" square with the double rabbet.
Morning Rider Dude, man, we had a hard time finding this stucco keyed wood trim. It's all brick molds it seems these days. Jay spent at least two hours, looking for it. Things that make you go hmmmm.👨🏻🔬
Did you notice your glasses were upside? jk haha
Hey Pateo Dude, of course i did it purposely, at the end I explain why.🍻
This is the same countdown as kill tony
Hey Eric, what is kill Tony? 🤔
Hi Kirk ,...IM stressed right out .. I screwed up last year and put my brown coat a little to heavy.. So there was no room for the 1/8th finish coat ..SO I diamond cuped off 1/8th from the brown coat so there would be enough room for the finish coat ..
Now the brown coat has kinda smooth texture ... Will my 1/8th finish coat still bond to it ? Im going the use a bonding agent
Howdy John, even if the base coat is a bit too heavy a color coat still could have been applied to it, just bullnose the windows and doors. But since you grinned some of it off, make certain there is no more dust on the wall by pressure washing or using a garden hose, No, you don't need a bonding agent. The new color finish will adhere by a mechanical bond, thus a chemical bond is not necessary. 🕵🏼
Hi Kirk, on this job, you mentioned you were able to put paper on the left side of the door, tucked under the existing stucco well to the left, underneath. What if you could NOT get the new paper under the existing stucco? Could you paper up to the stucco, then seal where it meets the stucco with polyurethane caulk?
@@rdennisjful Often times this is the only option, we were fortunate to be able to slide in the the corner.😉
Question Kirk I live in NM when they stucco houses in the winter they never protect from freezing overnight is that standard practice ?
Yes, it is standard practice, I have plastered while it was snowing several times.
The ideal weather is about 70 degrees, but I've also plaster in 105 heat. No such things as waiting for the right day, A competent plasterer simply adjusts his mix to the current weather.
Hey Kirk, your favorite viewer here. It's been a while. Got through all my stucco work thanks to you. But one thing, I have Effervescents from the neighbors side leaking through that beautiful finish I put on. I'm at a 1-2ft lower grade than their side. I used the rapid set stucco to repair what was falling off. Then painted. But now here and there the paint is buckling and the effervescence is pushing out. I had repaired where the stucco was falling from it. I scraped, power washed that . I am thinking they need that green board on the neighbors side to prevent it from seeping through??? My side is all concrete decking with zero effervescence. But the wall I repaired it is comming through. I read if I sealed the concrete on my side that effervescence could build up pressureon the wall. Any advice would be appreciated. But I am thinking green board on their side and a French type draining would work. I need you man.
Howdy Cash Gold Dude, are you sure the parapet cap or top or the wall is not allowing evening moisture or rain in?
If it is, the excess rain water will fill the walls then when the sun heats the wall the heat can boil the trapped water behind the paint, that creates pin holes where the water can sometimes escape, thus giving the illusion of effloresce.
By the way eflorences is kinda rare, it's usually from salty sand that was used in a stucco or cement mix, Almost all the sand sold is washed free of salts before being sold at the material yards.🤔
@@StuccoPlastering well my man it's not an appearance. These white things are a 1/4 in long growing throw my stucco and paint. I had alot of the paint bulges then I look under after scraping it and it's all white growing hair type of crap. Some grows through the pin holes correct. The capping seems fine. Same as the other wall on opposite side... And I should tell you the wall on the other side of the yard(which is higher than the dirt on the neighbors side) is fine and always has been. It's only on the side where my wall is at a lower grade than the dirt on my neighbors side. So imagine this only where my wall is at a lower grade do I have it coming through. Buckling the paint. My stucco job is fine. Now that I scraped some off the effervescence will grow. This is one for the ages.
@@StuccoPlastering think its coming from fertilizing the plants from the neighbors side. I get a bit of effervescence where my planter pots leak through the concrete. I'm not talking about that white alge that eventually turns yellow with a light misting. Pleanty of that too around here so I know the difference. Effervescence doesn't spray away like the alge. I know I know I know. But what I don't know well that's why I'm here my man.
WHOO HOO !!!!
Exzackory.🍻
Another great video, Kirk. It also brings up a question I've had.
In your videos I notice you always seal around doors and windows after the wire's on. Seems it might be easier (and less likely to hurt hands) to seal before putting the wire on, but I know there must be a reason. What am I missing?
Thanks, as always!
Good question, that polyurethane caulking destroys our staples guns by jamming up the toung or the staple door.
@@StuccoPlastering Ah! That makes perfect sense. So if I'm not using a gun on, it's OK to seal before installing the wire?
@@twosixtyninechatter653 Absolutely.
Hi Kirk, question. My stucco that is not quite 3 years old has a dark hue at the bottom and now it puckered in one place and a hole has appeared in that spot. why did this happen?
Hi Susan, I'd have to see it to say why this is happening.
Send a picture to kirkgiordano@gmail.com/ cheers.
I am southern CA have been searching up and down for that flashing paper (Fortifiber sk-10) and can't find it anywhere, where should I be looking?
Google it, my friend.
Thanks friend, I have googled it and called the company Henry (now owned by Carlisle) they dont make it any more and called three distributors down here to see if they have any old stock. Don't see it anywhere. So if you have a place you buy it from I'd be interested in talking to them to getthe details.
You can always use straight flash by DuPont, it's expensive but one of the best for weatherproofing walls.
But doesnt the staples put holes in the flashing?
Howdy No, all moisture barriers are self healing. If not 99 percent of homes built would be in a mess every winter.🌧
Kirk, where can i find the stucco stops?
Home Depot and or Lowe's, these stucco stops are usually sold in 20-foot lengths.
Kirk @@StuccoPlastering I am having trouble finding the stucco stops. Do they go by any other name? Are they just plain old wood trim that can be mitered?
@@user-hp4qt5ge9i They are sold at HD in 20-foot lengths, I didn't know that until my son Jason told me. Thus I couldn't find them either at first as I was looking for 8-foot lengths.
Ouch! He blew a nail right through the casing/framing at 6:54
Howdy, that's not the first time and won';t be the last, brad nails can care less what we want them to do.🥳
Upside down glasses ???
What glasses, who's glasses? Where the hell did I dine? ua-cam.com/video/hUioud7Qtsw/v-deo.html/ 💃
Hey Kirk, those Home Depot quality mail bags look brand new brother. You look like a goofball wearing those silly things.
Howdy, LOL, I never claimed to be cool, the fact is I am kinda nerdy. 👨🏫
