The little module by the factory amp is the ASD module. Basically it controls noise cancellation in the factory audio system. IIRC, several people make a bypass harness...I know Audison does for sure. We typically remove them with said harness when we upgrade the audio system. About 50 manufacturers make 3 series specific speaker upgrades, as well (like Audison.) lol
I already did the Bimmertech Carplay/Android Auto unit and was planning to do their audio upgrade. I'm hoping they're the same size as the factory amps, so my brackets fit.

There are several good ones depending on if you are looking for SQ, sqL or just loud n clean.
I'm working on the stereo now, actually. I'm going with Bimmertech and my own sub setup. Big question is the alternator, I need a high output and nobody makes one. Any ideas?
