    Nice result, Ralph.
    Might be time to try that filter.

      Thank you! No dust spot too 😉 the filter is such a great Astro investment. I can highly recommend.

    Great video. I keep on thinking I need to update my 20mm f1.8 f mount to the 20mm f1.8 Z version but when I see pics like this I think I can spend my money elsewhere for the few times I use the prime.

    My z5 shows a lot of noise in manual mode when shooting at night. The noise doesn't show on the photo, just on the evf-screen. Seems to be a general problem that can not be solved. However, I solved it by focussing in video mode and, once my subject is in focus, switching back to photo mode. Switching to the z6ii (or soon iii) has crossed my mind but when I see what you can achieve with it, I always come to the same conclusion: the price difference between the z5 and the z6 is not going to make my photos that much better. So I stick with my z5.

      Yeah the EVF quality is kinda rubbish for this. Good hack to solve the problem. I just use the screen on the back 🤷🏼‍♂️

    Great video, I am stuck on what body to move to from my Fuji xt-20. I want to to Holy Grail time lapse at some point in the future. The 5 will make the movie at the same time and has USB charging and SD cards, the 6ii has better low noise. I am so confused. lol😅

    Nice one. I missed this months new moon, was far too cloudy yesterday in Melbourne. :/ Surprised you're not using the Z9 though?

      Z8 is my camera of choice these days but this was to run the z5 through its paces. The z9 is great at an angle on a tripod.

    Thanks for your presentation, I just got the z5 and was wondering if you could tell me the settings for taking shots at the Moon. I can't seem to get it to focus. I have several lenses I can use with it. 28 to 400, 24 to 200. Thanks for your help

      @RalphMayhewPhotography  12 днів тому

      Use the 400mm focal length. Spot metering and then increase your shutter speed. You’ll need it quite high to get the moon in focus. It’s counter-intuitive. But it’ll work 👍

    Thanks for the video. You mentioned you were using the FTZ adapter, but aren't you using a Nikkor 20mm Z lens on the Z5?

    How's the Z5 holding on to 2024? Can you do a longterm review on it?

      It’s holding remarkably well and seems to be more popular than ever. I recently made this video which may help: Nikon Z5: You bought it, WHAT NEXT?

    Nice video! How do you keep the stars without all of them looking white ? Or blue ?

    • @RalphMayhewPhotography
      @RalphMayhewPhotography  29 днів тому +1

      Hmmm that’s just the way the photo comes. I know with star trails a lower iso results in more colour. You can accentuate the colours of the stars in post but they’ve always been there. Are yours not colourful?

    • @ancogamer

      but i always end up with white spots or even purple stars

    I agree about the Z5 producing a better image, at least in this instance, than the Z8. I can't help but wonder if it has to do with the anti-alias filter. I've tried to read up on the pros and cons of anti-alias filters, and there doesn't seem to be a clear winner in either case. When I first started looking into it, I was reading up on the Nikon D810A, and I think I saw that you could get it with or without anti-aliasing, but my memory is hazy.
    Do you have a preference for anti-aliasing?
    With regard to the light filter you used, specifically how it enhanced the "coolness" of the image, have you tried changing your white balance instead? I also prefer a cooler image vs too much of the earth's green haze. I don't use a filter because my experience with them is that they produce an image that looks like it's been dyed blue, but I also have used cheaper light filters (except for an L-Enhance that I used strictly for DSO). I'm new to mirrorless - just got a Z6. I had a D600. I was very pleased with the dynamic range of the images I got on my D600 without using a filter. I haven't had the opportunity to get out and do any astro with my Z6 yet, so I don't know how its going to handle. I did take some lunar images and was very pleased, but you can't get a sense of the dynamic range with lunar images.

      Very interesting. I’ll confess that before this post I’d never heard of an anti alias filter. But having had a look into it you may be onto something. I’ve never noticed it until now.
      The Nisi filter is a high quality one that really helps, I think, produce a better image. I should do a warm to cold white balance video verses filter. Sounds fun.
