We did that once on a steam roller but unfortunately left the blower valve open. Suddenly a big 'THROMP' and the bacon came flying through the chimney XD
I'm reminded of a tale I read in a book of "footplate yarns" where the driver and fireman hadn't had a bite to eat all day due to being too busy, and finally in the evening got a minute to cook some bacon and eggs by this method. Then, just as the food was about ready, the guard (I think it was) steps onto the footplate and operates something (I forget what it was, but he was testing something for safety) which caused a huge draft which sucked all the food right to the back of the firebox. You can bet they had some words to say to him for that dick move! Especially since there wasn't another spot of food to be found anywhere in that town at that time of the evening! The person telling the story says they were absolutely ravenous by the time they got off duty hours later, and immediately went in search of any place where they could get food. (I may have some of the details wrong. I misplaced my copy of the book some time ago and haven't found it even through years of searching, even though I'm certain I still have it)
On today's episode of Steam Locomotive Cooking we will be cooking up some yummy steaks. Lets get cooking. I bet that smells awesome and tastes even more awesome.
I've had coal-shovel chicken, courtesy of White Rose Pullman Luxury Dining. The mobile restaurant was a steam-crane stopped for lunch at Ingrow West platform, when we were laying out the yard. Our chef du jour was Richard; we had to use the crane because the BBQ had a supply of slack charcoal that refused to burn. It were reet grand!
That's brilliant! Your steam cranes do a good job. I brought my girls up in October 2016 and my youngest, the birthday girl, was treated to a ride in the Grafton crane at Oakworth by the lovely couple running it. We had cake on the train and a great day all round. Lovely!
We have done this on Christopher twice, I remember Tom putting sausage rolls wrapped in tin foil in her smoke box and cooked them, then I remember cooking bacon on the footplate.
At the station, James had to wait at a signal for the guaranteed connection, it would take long as the train wouldn’t arrive in another hour, in the mean time, the driver and the fireman thought it would be nice to have their lunch, they cooked fresh meat in the firebox for a few minutes and had a lovely supper of cooked stake. soon Thomas arrived with his branch line train. They exchanged passengers, the signals turned green, and lunch time over, James set of down the main line.
This is illegal for health and safety reasons. One indication of why these waster steam loco crews were replaced by driver only,.and their polluting locomotives cut for scrap with cutting torches and melted down.
heelfan1234 don't be pedantic, it's not illegal in anyway, we've had health inspectors come to my railway and ask if we could cook him a bacon and egg sandwich on the shovel, he said it's one of the best ways to cook meat because the open flames help to keep the juices in the meat
this used to be called the footplate breakfast. But now since 29th Mar 2017 it has been renamed. "The full English Brexit" No more continental breakfasts And a good cup of Yorkshire tea to wash it down
I guess shoveling coal into the firebox and taking care of the locomotive in general does work a bit of an appetite. I would think it’s safe to say that this is how the old steamers rewarded their engineers and firemen for all the hard work they do.
The first step is to make the shovel very hot then spray it with fizzle pipe, this cleans all the muck of it.😅. Don't have the blower on too hard or all your food will go up the chimney😢
@@kevfrombutterley My dad was a driver before, during and after WW2 on the LMS out of Saltley depot Birmingham. I'm a lifelong model engineer having built 6 live steam passenger hauling locos.
I find the idea of cooking food in a steam engine’s firebox quite intriguing. But sadly, my shaky hands might make me lose my bacon and eggs before I can even take it out.
Sorry from the late reply. The video is pretty much in real time so it's what you see here really. How quick things cook depends on how hot the fire is and the technique of the person holding the shovel. This is the bit of the job no one usually sees or asks questions about 😂
Holy sh*t why have I not done this I work on a steam railway in Australia and I’ve nearly starved my self while waiting at a red light and a freight train is slow as all h*ll in the fog so I would eat my turkey sandwich but it wouldn’t be enough so me and my fireman would split his pre cooked bacon but now I am going to bring raw steak and a few plates and a small box of juice with plates on my engine with me
Why is a steam locomotive better than a diesel or electric one? Because a steam locomotive is not just a transport machine but a cooking device as well! :))
Surprisingly, he's right, but only when it's used for cooking. I saw this on TV just a few days ago. Most of the oils which we think of as healthy and better for cooking because the oil is polyunsaturated actually produce poisons when heated to cooking temperatures. It's not much, but it might still accumulate over time. Over-all, animal based fats and oils are the healthier choice for cooking.
Well then I guess this is one way to cook your breakfast or meat on the go in a steam locomotive people back in the day in the 1890 up to the 1980s the problem in doing this 400 is cooking the bacon and eggs with the shovel a spare shovel clean and Crystal
As cool as that seems, i cant get over that they did it on a shovel. Sure its probably new but... still. And also , what if we opened a restaurant thagt used steam loco- no. Thats just disrepect
It's a treat from a byegone era. The shovel is blasted with a very hot hose from the boiler feed, then sterilised by holding it in the fire. I'm not selling the idea as a great cooking method, just sharing our little bit of fun 😁
To be fair, the dirt on our hands mostly comes from the coal and that won't cause food poisoning. You make a good point though. If we were serving members of the public we'd have do things differently. We were only cooking for ourselves.
Good to see the tradition being kept alive
We did that once on a steam roller but unfortunately left the blower valve open.
Suddenly a big 'THROMP' and the bacon came flying through the chimney XD
Adrian Straub i wish i was there to see that
I'm just trying to imagine that XD
Flying bacon you very rarely see that. lol

It'd be rude not to with that great fire sat there 😁

Now that looks so yummy!! hope ya kept the kettle on for the tea to go with it!
And here I thought us Yanks and Aussies were the only ones rugged enough to eat with dirty paws! Lol, looks great mate!
We're just about rugged enough 😁
We have done this on Christopher twice, I remember Tom putting sausage rolls wrapped in tin foil in her smoke box and cooked them, then I remember cooking bacon on the footplate.
yeah he has nice clean hands for handling food.
If we wash them too much it removes all the flavour!
this makes me love of steam trains more than I used to
One would presume the stoker reserves a shovel "expressly" for this purpose. Sorry, couldn't resist a railway pun there.
Ba-dum-tishhhhh 😂
Forget dining in fashion, the old way is better! XD
Definitely. No need to book a table on one of these..☺
So this is how fireman and engineers cooked thir lunch during the golden days of steam! Nice! 👌🤤😉 would definitely love to try that steak
LMAO! "mobile kitchen".... OMG that Stilton too oh so yummy!
The best part of the job
Now I’m hungry

I've had a good breakfast cooked on Thomas' shovel on more than one occasion 😂
If i ever visit Butterly again i mist bring some gammon ^^
If I works as a steam train driver I would love to do that
This shod be a cooking show! XD
"Have kitchen, will travel" sounds good to me 😁
Im now hungry for steak...
Gotta love the taste of coal from cooking on a shovel! _sarcasm_

Ok now i know how they cooked the fish and chips In Thomas goes fishing🚂
Yes
I had a footplate cooked black puddin' beautiful taste
That's gorgeous enough at the best of times. I might have to give it a go.
How long do you cook these steaks on the shovel in the firebox for? I personally like to cook grilled chicken on the footplate.

The onley way to cook steak and if you want to do jacket potato wrap it in tin foil amd put it in the smoke box.
Yup. They cook beautifully in there. Do a tin of baked beans on the warming plate over the firehole door and you have a nice easy meal for two 😁
SEASON THEM STEAKS
Good point Jason. I'm a peppercorn sauce man when they're served on a plate!
Blue cheese is very salty.
It's a local specialty for us guys.
Real men cook with fire!!! OH, OH, OH!!!!
It would be a shame not to 😆
Are you doing a BBQ in the engine’s footplate

Roast a steak on a footplate
Good plan. While the judges criticise the food we can leave them to it and take the old girl for a run down the line 😂
Tip: if you dont have a fire to cook at your home
