I'd love to see more content were a bridge is made from the technical jargon of the photography world to the basics for those starting out. Why not use your groups photography process as a way to teach people?

I loved this, Brandon. Great video, you put across the ideas with a good level of detail but in simple enough terms that a photography noob like myself could understand it fine.
Really hope this becomes at least a semi-regular thing, you're a natural on screen and LTT would be a great place for photography/videography tech videos (even if just for the curious among us).
'Affordability" is very relative. 800 USD .... I doubt that Price tag is affordable for 90% of the photographers watching this channel.
When he said affordability he was talking about Dollar Shave Club, not the lens (unless I missed it!) Even still, Brandon is technically a professional photographer/filmer so I'm sure 800USD is affordable to him.

At that price, it _may_ be better to buy a faster wide angle zoom than this adapter. One can buy a Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 lens for Canon and Nikon aps-c cameras for less than US$500 on Amazon. I say "may," because the average DSLR user who bought a camera with kit lens(es) won't get much, if any, benefit from using this adapter to widen and "brighten" a basic zoom lens. So, it depends on what you need and your budget. This adapter is clearly targeted at professionals who know what they're doing, so Brandon should have gotten "technical" about his description. For beginning photographers, this adapter would be an expensive toy.
I have that Tokina :) I paid ~$800 though
NuMetal92 I have a Nikon D300, and I use the Tokina 12-24 f/4, which is a nice lens for the price. If I needed wider and faster (which I don't), I would sell this fine lens and buy the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 instead of an expensive adapter. :)

Basically, if you use a lens that's designed for a larger sized sensor on a camera with a smaller sized sensor, some light from the lens is wasted. Some light hits the back of the camera outside the sensor.
All a turbo or speed booster does is use an extra element (lens) to correct for that. It takes that wasted light, and focusses it down onto the smaller sensor.
The result is a change in field of view (the picture zooms out a little bit), and a brighter image (because each part of the sensor is recieving more light than it was before). It also changes F stop, which in turn changes depth of field... Basically, the subject will be even sharper, and the backgrounds and foregrounds even blurrier.
All in all, it's a cheap way to get more performance out of a lens not designed for your camera. For example, I like "fast" lenses (lenses that let a lot of light in). I need a 35mm lens. Recently, I decided that instead of buying a whole new lens, i could take my awesome 60 dollar vintage Nikon 50mm F1.4 lens, stick it on a 120 dollar turbo adapter, and effectively get a 35mm F1.2 lens out of it... It may not sound worth it to put a lens on an adapter that costs twice as much, but when you consider how much if would cost to get a good 35mm F1.2 lens native to my camera... yeah, it's a good deal.

Khai Please correct me if I'm wrong. The Japanese language doesn't really have an "L" and because of that, it is harder for Japanese native speakers to say worlds with L. The closest sound linguistically is a "R" sound. (try sounding them out in your mouth and be aware of where you tongue is in each sound). Because of this, many native japanese speakers struggle with english words with L's in them and tend to pronounce them as R's. ("herro" or in this case, "affordabirrity" vs affordability)
Understanding that tidbit of english/Japanese phonetics, we can now take a look at culture. Because of the mass generalizations of Asian people in non Asian areas, many of the noticible problems that are associated with a particular flavor of Asian (korean, taiwanese, chinese, japanese, etc. ) tend to be stereotyped to all Asian people. What Linus did was a crude joke, playing at Brandon's not fully clear enunciation and speaking skills as well as the fact that he's Asian, making him a prime target for the Japanese "L, R" problem even though he isn't Japanese, but some other flavor of asian.
Basically, Linus was a dick for making that joke but since when did he ever pull his cheap shots at his staff.
I didnt take it as racism, though many people do because brandon is a different race. I perceived it as linus poking fun at brandon having a few hickups in his presentation. I guess that makes him Languagist.

This guy is a great presenter. I feel like I can somewhat agree with what Linus is saying, but at the same time I feel like any person who is even somewhat into photography should know what an f stop is. If they don't, link a video for it. Just seems like any photographer watching this is going to think you're talking to them like a baby. Linus, you use tech jargon for every other piece of tech, why not for cameras? Don't keep people dumb. That's why they come to your channel. To learn. I've been a huge fan of this channel btw. I've been watching you since around the time you transitioned to this professional format (lost the Blair watch cam), and I basically haven't missed a video yet (other than some long wan shows). Keep the tech jargon. That's my vote.

I Would have liked to have seen more a review of your actual experience of using the speedbooster as well as how it works for the people that don't know much about it. otherwise great video I hope Linus lets you make some more! :)

As a subscriber, I appreciate all items tech that you guys present including Brandon's camera tech that is now popping up.
I don't understand any of the criticisms being thrown about. There was absolutely nothing wrong with his presentation nor his use of jargon.
As pointed out below, your current target audience is PC based but those of us who are into cameras had no issue understanding what he was talking about.
That said, you guys have always had a good at delivering new tech in layman's terms .

From your diagram it seems like I am using less of my image sensor. Is that a right assumption? If so this doesn't seem as advantageous as you are making it out to be. I'm a also assuming this doesn't work well with film cameras

I will look up how these things work with a more "technical" description tomorrow or a less technical one considering I am a neophyte and rusty when it comes to ray diagrams.
Mark, this won't work with "full frame" sensors. Imagine using a lens designed for a full frame camera, but on a camera with a sensor smaller than that. The light that your lens projects into the back of your camera will have a much larger area than your sensor - so, this device shrinks the area of the light that is projected into the back of your camera down to the size of your sensor.
This won't work if you're using a typical canon lens with a full frame canon camera, but if you're using that same lens with a micro 4/3 camera which has a smaller sensor size than the lens was designed for, this will do the trick.
Really in to camera's especially tech for video capture.

+Mbandi Music They can't control UA-cam Ads, and the video was not payed by Megabones or if it was they always give there honest review as you can see in the Jaybird X2 review. The ending Sponsor spot was bad but they do have to make money to pay all the employees and equipment.

More like a full frame to aps adapter, as in it makes full frame lenses retain their technical properties when mounted on smaller formats. It basically lets you use yummy FF lenses on shittier APS cameras, for the price of a SH FF camera.
its more used for adapting canon EF mount lenses to micro 4/3 mounts honestly, most popular combo being with the sigma 18-35 f/1.8 art and the GH4 / GH5
I know some people think they're pointless. Under the right circumstances though, they can be great.
I have a sony A6000. I was looking for a good 50mm at F1.8 or better for portraits... One day, in a store called "hard off" (basically a japanese pawn shop), i found a vintage nikon 50mm F1.4 lens from the 1960s, all manual for 60 dollars. I bought it, and bought a used adapter for 12 dollars on amazon.
I now also have a sony 50mm F1.8... Honestly, i use the Nikon lens more. it's a bit sharper, has much less CA, and I prefer manual focus anyway. It also has better low light performance and depth of field... Not bad for a 60 dollar lens, it gives my 300 dollar one a run for its money.
Now I'm trying to get a super fast 35mm, again, preferably F1.8 or better.
... then I realized for 120 bucks, I could get a decent booster. My vintage lens is a full frame lens, and my camera is an apsc crop sensor. Wth a booster adapter, I would effectively get a lens at 35mm and (unless my math is wrong) F1.0
... I can't even find a 35mm F1.0 lens for my camera, let alone compare prices. The closest I could find so far is a couple of 35mm F1.2 lenses, the cheapest of which is 500 dollars... Suddenly it makes more sense to stick my vintage lens on a booster thay costs twice as much as it than it does to buy a whole new lens with the same specs.
Oh, and most of the reason why these boosters are so over priced is because they also translate electrical connections between the camera body and the lens... If you're like me and the lens you want to boost is all manual, that guff doesn't even matter.

Thanks for vid, I wanted to get an adaptor to use Nikon lenses on my Oly EM1, but didn't know if I this speedbooster would worth the extra cash. Now sounds like a pretty good deal, since its turning fast primes into even faster primes)

From what you said about it having the opposite effect of reducing sharpness, I'm thinking that the XL at .64x would result in sharper images than the Ultra at .71x - is that right? Have you tested both? Thanks for a great video!

This is amazing, I am not very experienced with photography. Ok I am going to buy an a6500 I already own a 24-240 lens FE lens 3.5/5.6 it is a Sony Lens. Can I purchase this speed booster and put it on my a6500 use the full frame lens and get all the advantages you just spoke of? Sorry about all my questions, great channel, you guys balance each other out very well...keeps the video engaging...
