Bill (Anthony Hopkins) finds it difficult to introduce Death to his family at dinner.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The cycle of life on Earth hangs in the balance when Death becomes emotionally involved in this romantic fantasy. William Parrish (Anthony Hopkins) is a tremendously wealthy and powerful man who oversees a worldwide multi-media empire. Despite the loss of his wife, whom he dearly loved, William is content with his life, and he's very close to his two daughters, Allison (Marcia Gay Harden) and Susan (Claire Forlaini). One night, as William is fighting a hostile takeover of his company and Allison is planning an elaborate party to celebrate her dad's 65th birthday, William begins displaying the symptoms of a severe heart attack, and he is visited by a mysterious stranger, Joe Black (Brad Pitt). Joe is actually the angel of death, who has taken the form of a man who recently passed on to pay William a call. It seems that William is due to move on to the next world, but (no great surprise) he doesn't want to go. Joe, on the other hand, is curious to know what life is like for mere mortals, so the two men strike a deal -- William will have some time to get his affairs in order, and Joe will wait and see what it's like to be a human being. Joe decides that he likes it very much when he falls in love with Susan, but negotiating the slippery slopes of romance is no easier for Joe than for any ordinary man. Meet Joe Black is an updated version of Alberto Casella's play Death Takes a Holiday, which was adapted for the screen in 1934.

One thing I love about this clip is how welcoming and endearing Alison and Quince are to this complete stranger entering Bill's home. You can instantly sense the bond, especially between Joe and Quince, which then carries on throughout the movie. Contrast that to Drew's stand-offishness, which again Joe can sense. Just one of many subtle layers that makes this film a masterpiece.

God damn it Anthony Hopkins is killing it here. I put this acting in between Hannibal Lector and Ford in Westworld. When he’s thinking about what to call ‘death’, ‘the reaper’ ect, you can literally witness what he’s thinking. Sort of bemused at the start and decides to pick an ordinary name like joe, then when he begins to contemplate what he really would go by just thinks of “.... black.... “.it’s creepy as hell an just amazing acting on both parts brad Pitt included

Interesting how Bill introduces Drew as his #1, but not a peep of him being the boyfriend of his daughter. A telling detail he left out.
Fun story: I once had to introduce a classmate of mine to another friend. I managed to forget my friends name as I was introducing him, spending almost ten seconds before remembering it. The reason for this was that my friends were both named Joe. Somehow this tangled up my mind as I simply went hey Joe this is..….It was very awkward and I did not explain my confusion properly back then since I was very young. This scene definitely brought back those awkward memories!

One of the oldest beings in existence, the god of death, lord of the macabre who has seen it all, still has a childlike innocence about him. I liked that in the film.

26 years old and I've never heard of this movie . Might've come across it when I was younger but I was a child . The song joe black by nas is what bought me here .
I was a teenager when it came out. I heard about it but was never into watching romance movies at that age. I went to see another romance, drama movie called Titanic only because of of a class trip. I recently watched this movie, 24 years later, damn I should've watched it sooner. It's a masterpiece!

look at ALL of their suits, they all look one size too big, but they're actually not... this is just the aesthetic preference of this particular era... these days, a suit that's considered a perfect fit is a LOT tighter... it just reflects the fashion trends... back then, the current fit would be considered way too small
fitted suits only became mainstream sometime after 2000, keep in mind, this movie came out in 1999 so it was back when suits were more loose fit
but you have to remember that it's not just a case of size, there's a certain aesthetic to different fits, the 90s was the decade of loose fitting clothing, not just suits, but also keep in mind that Elvis rocked very loose fitting suit jackets in his early days, and IMO that was a great look for him, it's just a matter of aesthetic preference... just because it doesn't fit the current trend doesn't make it wrong, try thinking outside your little boxes people!

And this is how I was introduced to this masterpiece of a film. I Was home thawing out after freezing my a$$ off on my motorcycle one evening after work in early 2006 - I had some time to kill before I had to leave to the airport to pick up my brother coming home for an extended weekend of leave during his time in the Marine Corps. I turned on the TV saw this scene, and having never seen any other snippets of the film, (because I had no interest in romantic films), Just as Anthony Hopkins was introducing him, somehow I knew this was Meet Joe Black.
i totally forgot Jeffrey Tambor was in this film.
