Parrish (Anthony Hopkins) meets Joe Black (Brad Pitt) - death personified - and finds out that he is going to die.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The cycle of life on Earth hangs in the balance when Death becomes emotionally involved in this romantic fantasy. William Parrish (Anthony Hopkins) is a tremendously wealthy and powerful man who oversees a worldwide multi-media empire. Despite the loss of his wife, whom he dearly loved, William is content with his life, and he's very close to his two daughters, Allison (Marcia Gay Harden) and Susan (Claire Forlaini). One night, as William is fighting a hostile takeover of his company and Allison is planning an elaborate party to celebrate her dad's 65th birthday, William begins displaying the symptoms of a severe heart attack, and he is visited by a mysterious stranger, Joe Black (Brad Pitt). Joe is actually the angel of death, who has taken the form of a man who recently passed on to pay William a call. It seems that William is due to move on to the next world, but (no great surprise) he doesn't want to go. Joe, on the other hand, is curious to know what life is like for mere mortals, so the two men strike a deal -- William will have some time to get his affairs in order, and Joe will wait and see what it's like to be a human being. Joe decides that he likes it very much when he falls in love with Susan, but negotiating the slippery slopes of romance is no easier for Joe than for any ordinary man. Meet Joe Black is an updated version of Alberto Casella's play Death Takes a Holiday, which was adapted for the screen in 1934.

this film is 3hrs and 1 minute long. it's a long movie... but I could have sat and watched another 3hrs and 1 minute ... it is a delicious film. the pacing is immaculate. The casting superb and the soundtrack is touching, emotional and dreamlike
it's been in my top 10 for a very long time.

@@bellmeisterful EFNY is a great movie, but unfortunately it hasn't dated well. It is a shame when that happens because we all have enduring memories of how a film had an impact on us in its heyday, but attempting to introduce somebody to some of them now, especially those who are used to big budget spectaculars is hard. What makes a movie endure inevitably comes down to the story and the acting.
one of my favourite movies that hasn't dated well is Assault on Precinct 13 (the original one with the John Carpenter soundtrack), but it's still a great story and I can live with it's shortcomings

It is amazing like Death himself never really says who he is. He just gives this feeling when the person just KNOWS.

One interesting thing in this scene, if you watch carefully, Death does not blink once during the exchange. It's subtle, but lends him an otherworldly air without having to be overt about it.
He'd probably say "What's blinking?"
He blinks at 2:15.

Brad Pitt rarely makes a bad film
pacing is slow, methodical, a quiet intense, plays like reading a book. But an incredible story.

A very underrated movies which explores the consequences of behavour and actions of life when confronted with the objective reality of death. Sadly a western taboo which deserves more consideration, an intellectually rewarding film.

This movie was like underrated from brad pitt
The movie was too long but Pitt and Hopkins were great. Why doesn't Brad Pitt ever make a good movie? Other than the one where he killed by the Grizzly Bear ? Interesting point. Hopkins survives the Bear in that Bear movie with Alec Baldwin. Anyway
that movie you're referring to is legends of the fall, and in my opinion a lot of his movies are great. I see no problem with them
