@@jls9595 This recipe is on the bland side for practically anyone living in the South. While the Northern half of the US prefers milder seasoning, we in the South want a bolder (not spicy) flavor.

@@robertdecuir5748 hey man, you can add any spices you want to make it a southern version. This is a recipe for take out sweet and sour chicken, NO ONE claimed it was anything else.
I tend to spice it up when I make it but this is the best basic recipe for a crispy outside and tender and juicy inside.

I have been SEARCHING for this Batter about 45 years!!! As a kid in a UK mining town in the 1970s we had no takeaways (apart from from fish and chips) A Chinese family moved into our town and hired part of a fish and chip shop for the grandma to make/sell this NEW EXOTICT food. Which my parents would buy us once a fortnight/ I can only remember 5 dishes being available. Rice, special fried rice, chow mien, Pork Balls, chicken balls. One sauce. Sweet and sour. It was HEAVEN. Fast forward to big cities, thousands of Chinese menu items, hundreds of cook books and my simple Batter had gone, lost in the modern warfare that is now the norm in Chinese cuisine. UNTIL NOW! I am so glad i stumbled upon this recipe. It is identical in every way. THANK YOU !!! my long lost friend is back 🙂

Look, I know EVERYONE who has commented on this video has said how absolutely FANTASTIC this recipe is, and guess what… THEY ARE 100% correct! I tried it tonight (I’m trying to expand the window on things I am capable of making at home) and oh Holy this dish is BETTER than take out! If you want to adjust the sweetness or sourness do so AFTER you follow his instructions and then taste it. I don’t know how I haven’t seen this recipe before seeing as how it’s been on UA-cam for so long, but it’s now my discovery of a buried treasure! Made this last night - substituted with bottled S&S sauce for time (next time I will make yours!)
    This was delicious!
I didn't have cooking wine or white pepper. I just used regular pepper. There was enough batter for 2-1b packages of trimmed chicken tenderloins, sliced diagonally as shown.
I reheated leftovers by placing the chicken pieces (no sauce) on a cookie sheet and baking them at 450F for 8-10 min. Left overs were even crispier, the chicken was still really moist too. My family is thrilled! Thank you for your time and effort in making your videos. I liked, subscribed and shared!

Man, I made the marinade and the batter last night for our chicken breast. It was DELICIOUS!!!!
We didn't have the ingredients for the sauce so we used prepared sweet chili sauce from Walmart. To that sauce, we added chopped onion, green pepper and pineapple with some of the pineapple juice and simmered on a low flame. As suggested in the video, we kept the sauce as a side dip so the chicken would remain crispy and JUICY!

If your sauce is too strong, simply add in more water. It should decrease the sour taste. The least amount is 5-6 cups or 1.2 L - 1.42 L. The optimal amount is 8-9 cups or 1.9 L to 2.2 L. Sorry, if I miss informed everyone.

I made my version so to speak of the sweet and sour sauce, better said sweet and hot:)), i added hot ketchup, water, honey, garlic, green onions(i've cooked them a little in butter first, just a little butter),paprika, pepper and salt, i gotta say it tasted wonderfull, you would first taste the hot of the paprika and the pepper, after that the honey would kick in and in the end you could definetly taste the finely minced garlic and the onions, have you ever made a sauce like this? can you tell me how good they are compared with eachother, lemons and oranges are expensive here and the sauce i made is cheaper, can you taste the lemon in this sauce?

I have made this dish as well as countless others of his. I haven’t been disappointed yet. I had to screen shot ingredients and go to my local Asian market. I got off looks but I did it and couldn’t be happier. Wish he’d return to UA-cam!

I 100% agree with you on not drenching the chicken with the sauce. I always dip my chicken in the sauce

I am definitely trying this tomoro! I am so glad u specified about not putting the sauce on the chicken!! So many recipes I've looked at fry the chicken to just brown & crisp it & then they say to put it in the oven with the sauce poured over & bake for about an hour. My mind screeched at every recipe, "but wouldn't that make the chicken soggy when it was finished?!?" I'd read the comments, fully expecting them to talk about the chicken being soggy but surprisingly 99.9% of them just said how good it was! I couldn't believe it! Who wants soggy chicken balls?? I mean, that's what we're all striving for with these recipes, chicken balls like you get in the restaurants, right? When are they ever served soggy? They're not! Common sense tells us if you put a crispy battered item in a wet sauce it is going to be soggy!!
So u saved my brain from meltdown by posting this video, especially with your comments!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Now if only all those 'cooks' could see this!

This was my first time deep frying anything and wow, it worked perfectly. I used a different recipe with condensed milk for the sauce, but the rest was from this video. Very juicy, stayed crisp for a while, and extremely flavorful, even without any sauces.

This was SO good! I had to use sauce in a jar since I didn't have the ingredients for that part but I made the chicken with only minor changes. Before I found your video, I already had some chicken breasts brining so I didn't put them in water or add any extra salt. I also didn't have white pepper so I used just a little black. We all loved it! I can't wait to make it again with your sauce recipe!

Thank you for this recipe! I love this style of sweet and sour far far more than the non-crispy, sauce-laden, versions you find almost everywhere else. Those recipes look like a General Tso's version. This Cantonese style is by far the best ... 100 times better!
