He said it before the fight while laying in bed with Adrian. He just wanted to go the distance with the champ bcuz no one ever had and if he did that, he would know for the first time he wasn't just another bum from the neighborhood
@williamrubin4912 I agree with you statement about him being a bad guy, he was overconfident and didn’t care about the fight. Though he was definitely the antagonist of the story.
@@StuartLegomanLittle Apollo is definitely not a “bad” guy. He underestimated Rocky, but Duke knew Apollo was in for a war if Rocky hung around. Apollo deep down knew he had nothing left after he floored Rocky in the 14th. Apollo’s courage and pride kept him upright and able to get the decision.
so true! It's the little things! And after fighting a war, he notices that her hat is missing (and he can barely see). This is truly one of the best love-stories of all time.
Stallone - an underrated writer.... I remember when he felt he had to prove how smart he was - I remember various interviews during the late 90s when Stallone tried to use big words - Fortunately his daughters are all the proof needed that he's a 'rock' steady guy - at least smart enough to listen to his wife.....

I remember my dad took me to see this movie, at the end when the bell rang to end the fight, everyone in the cinema stood and gave a standing ovation! No joke. Everyone was up in their sit and clapping. I was too young to understand why but I remember standing up and didn't sit until the end credit was done. What a fondest memory with my dad...
JessikahAznBabyy I can see why they would. I really envy ppl when I hear they watched Rocky in a movie theater. HOW cool. Rocky wasn't really a movie about boxing, but about the human condition. To come from nothing (much like Sylvester Stallone before Rocky, as multiple movie studios didn't even want Sly to be Rocky), and to stand tall in the end, as Rocky/Stallone did :)
He didn't care about the scorecard winner but he definitely cared about winning. He told Adrian before the fight he knew he wouldn't actually beat Apollo and that his goal was to go all 15 rounds and if he did that he'd feel like the winner. It meant everything to him to make it to that last bell
Bro of course, it was never about winning and losing. It was about proving to himself that he could go toe-toe with anybody, including the champ. That’s why he said “Don’t want one” when Apollo said “Ain’t gonna be no rematch”. Because he already got what he wanted outta the fight.
Here after the sad news of Carl Weathers passing. And to mention his beautiful performance in this scene. No words, just disbelief as Rocky gets up and beckons him for more. RIP Carl. Iconic
Rocky didn't win the fight, but won his life and Adrian's heart. That's what can make us winners. Not just a trophy or a medal, but the road until the glory.
Rocky knew that he had no business fighting a boxer of Apollo Creed's league. His only concern was going the distance and remaining standing in the end. And with Adrian embracing him in his moment of personal triumph, made this ending that much more powerful and impactful. A classic film for the ages.
I,ve had a few women in my life but how many of us MEN WISH we had an ADRIAN in our life that loved us the way she made him feel? A woman you would give it all away for and she not expecting nothing in return?
the ending is perfect. the outcome of the match is literally pushed into the background and what really matters is what's focused on. if you truly love somebody - this scene should ring VERY true. it's just a stupid match.. if you have her love that's all that matters.
+For Your Consideration Hey, I don't love anyone and still, I'm mad about this end scene, watch for what you say mister "rude I'm in love with someone" xP
I also like how, at least I think, Paulie redeems himself for all the bad things he did in the movie by simply pulling up on the rope to let Adrian slip into the ring.
None of the other Rocky movies can compare. Hearing "Apollo Creed" named the winner while watching the two of them say "I love you" is far more effective than a simple and predictable "Rocky wins!," which is what the all the others built to. The fantasy/Cinderella story aspect aside, there was still a brute realism and poignancy about this movie that the others just could not capture.
I agree with a lot of what you said, although I think 2,3 &4 are amazing too. Particularly Rocky III where Apollo puts his ego aside to train Rocky after his trainer dies, and gets Rocky back to his best. Quiet a few people don't like 4, but I like the story of Rocky fighting to avenge Apollo's death. Getting up before Apolli in Rocky II was pretty legendary too imo.
Rocky 3 is SO GOOD - I rewatched it last year.... The training on the beach etc. It made "Eye of the Tiger" a hit And Rocky 4 inspired Olympian Michael Phelps when he trained for the Olympics - that Ivan Drago training montage! Sure some of the dialogue is forced by Rocky 4 .... but still respectable.
@@michael43567 Rocky IV is like the black sheep, it seems far more modern with it's electronic score than the first III and the music video style sequences are very 80s. It's kind of a guilty stand alone pleasure for many. Stallone was clever with all his Rocky endings, every one of them could have potentially been the end of the saga as each brings storylines full circle.
For drama, as well as pure cinematic storytelling, this was by far the best. I mean the others were also good, don't get me wrong. But the writing, the directing, the acting, the character development, it was just really a well done movie. The fact that Rocky didn't win the fight was irrelevant. "Winning" for Rocky was gaining self-confidence, beating the odds, getting the fight in the first place. Proving to himself that he isn't just some bum from Philly. Remember when he said "All I want to do is go the distance?" He did.
@@perryegolson833 Yes, and the ending we know almost wasn't, it was a reshoot! But they hit the nail, sometimes I pretend the others didn't happen just for it to have full impact. I showed a retrospective of it on 35mm about 12 years ago and quite a few middle aged patrons were seeing it for the first time. I got really excited for them as I knew they would experience the whole film fresh with no knowledge of the sequels!
Adrian is such a wonderful character. Lacking confidence in herself but takes a chance with Rocky and ends up reciprocating the love back to him as he did to her. At the end she forces herself to watch and see Rocky's pain (as she feels it herself). Just wonderful. Why can't we have more of this!
At 0:38 she closes her eyes and Wills herself to watch him. Her eyes open with such steely resolve it's as if she somehow manages to give Rocky some kind of a boost rather than it being a coincidence that he rattles Apollo's ribs in the next moment. Her "I love you" cries are also so genuine that it makes you shed a tear.
I’ll never understand how Bill Conti didn’t get an Oscar nomination for his score. It’s mind blowing. Gonna Fly Now at least got a nomination. But to me the score for Rocky is absolute perfection. Not only is the score epic but it captures every single emotion in the film. There’s been a lot of great scores. But to me Conti’s Rocky and Carpenter’s Halloween (1978) are the absolute best where the music also tells a story. Both films even if you’ve never seen them. You know the music. But keeping the focus on Conti and Rocky. Like seriously how was the score not nominated? Jerry Goldsmith won for the Omen. Outstanding score yes, but Conti’s score is far more iconic.
Interesting point. At the time more avant garde composers were better respected than neo romantic composers, so Goldsmith's score fit the bill. Conti's score has the perfect combination of neo romantic, disco and rock. It manages to take you back to the 1970s and also has the sweep of a mid 20th century movie at the same time. The counterpoint in the first Rocky movie is brilliant. Even the closing credits is a fugato.
The most underrated part of this movie is right after the fight and the two boxers are clinched. The crowd and the spectacle is dubbed out for the moment and all you can hear is "ain't gonna be no rematch, ain't gonna be no rematch." "Don't want one" This moment defines the key difference in these two characters and is a great moment to have right before the eruption of music and the chaotic ending Adrian!! scene,
@@johnanderson9765 I think in that moment at the end of the fight Apollo didnt want a rematch because both he and Rocky knew that they just had a match for the ages and didnt need a rematch. But as soon as he went backstage he realizes "oh shit there is huge money to be made here with a rematch"
When the film opened and many years after, while that dialogue was said "Aint gonna be no rematch" "Don't want one", the ROCKY theme was played on piano, if you play that track on the original music soundtrack you can hear it, for one reason or another it never seems to be in the film anymore.
@@gargantuaism THANK YOU! I feel like I'm going insane. It's a few bars of "Alone in the Ring" that play just after the final bell and before Rocky and Apollo embrace. It adds SO MUCH to the scene, and I have no idea why it isn't in most edits.
The unusually pure love chemistry between Rocky and Adrian was nothing short than genius. No wonder Stallone wouldn’t sell his movie script unless he played Rocky himself. Nobody knew Rocky better than Stallone
@PatricksCrazyPlace......Good 'eye' bro. Paulie was a complete pr*ck to Adrian throughout the entire flick. So to see him finally be a loyal-loving 'Big Brother' made the scene especially sweet. ❤❤❤
Paulie was a jerk to Adrian throughout the movie but at the end of the day, he pulls through for her. Let's her sneak onto the ring so she can be with Rocky.
I think, in general, Paulie is a really complex character that people always go like “he’s an abuser towards his sister!”, which is true, but it’s not simply that or just because. Just as Adrian, he has suffered a lot, and doesn’t understand his own world as Rocky in the beginning of the film. At the end of the day, the film is a commentary on perceiving the love surrounding you, and realizing that, when fighting for the right reasons, you will fight without giving up to any adversity. That’s what makes Adrian’s love so exceptional, that she makes Rocky love himself (the film editing of the movie is great, one of the best ever, and really helps you understand that turning point for Rocky). Maybe that’s what Paulie is lacking, something to make him realize the love surrounding him
"I LOVE YOU!!"...When Adrian said that repeatedly, I always cry. The unconditional love they both have for each other, selfless, and everlasting!! This scene alone should have gotten Tallia Shire an Oscar nomination.
I love that when Rocky gets knocked down, Adrian looks too nervous to be there because she doesn't want him to get hurt. But then she sees Rocky get up after being knocked down by the champ, so she closes her eyes like shes telling herself that she is going to commit to being there for him, scary or not. She then watches the fight the rest of the way through. Both her and Rocky grew as a couple. Such amazing character development
He told her to wait in the locker room, but she waited so long and comes out. He’s getting beaten, goes down, and once again gets up. She puts her head down as if to say, “he will not give in”. Just a great, great moment.
Good point. That part that really chokes me up his manager (who's been telling him much of the movie he has no heart) saying ""Down stay down" I.E. He realizes that Rocky has heart, maybe a little too much. He might get himself killed.
“Tonight we have had the privilege of witnessing the greatest exhibition of guts and stamina in the history of the ring.” The music. The emotion. The chaos. The screaming. “Where’s your hat?”. This could very well be the greatest ending to any movie in history. Genius.
Such a perfect film. I love how the outcome of the fight is unimportant to Rocky. He proved he is not a loser and he won the heart of the woman he loves. As Stallone said it, the final still shot is a frame of the top moment in Rocky's life. That is why I hate the sequels so much. He's already won....the titles are irrelevant in Rocky's life!
jjman9 Granted, most sequels are bad ideas, but some sequels are also great, like Rocky 2, The Godfather 2, etc. Many say Godfather 2 was better than the original. I think the original Rocky is better, but Rocky 2 also brought the goods.
Mike S i am ONLY referring to the Rocky sequels. II was awful to just okay. I cringe at the Kentucky Fried idiot line. The first film was about a personal victory. The second is about pleasing everyone else.
jjman9 I saw the Rocky 2 as the realization of a former bum who was suddenly saddled with celebrity status, the struggles with that, and whether he should risk his health and family for a rematch.
I cry every time I see this. I love how low the volume of announcer is when he announces Creed won. The point of the movie wasn’t about winning, it was about courage. Just beautiful.
This is a scene that will be with me for the rest of my life. Every time I feel defeated in life I watch it, it has the magical power of getting me back on track.
One of the most overlooked best pictures. The entire movie builds up to a fight where no one cares who won. You have to pay really close attention to figure out the outcome.
How exactly is ROCKY overlooked? The character still lives in the CREED movies, Stallone got nominated for an Oscar a few years ago for the first CREED film, I think "ROCKY" will always live on as a classic.
+Mike S Agree. Also the scene when the promoter is grinning while watching Rocky unexpectedly put up a fight. Such great subtlety unlike the sequels where everything is spelled out for the viewer.
After enduring the most physically painful, longest fight in his life with the heavy wieght champion of the world Rocky still remembers what Adrian was wearing before the fight started.
Fahad, and the musical score REALLY gave the ending an emotional tug, as well. Nothing wrong with crying. It's a raw emotion, and it's good for the soul to do it every now and again.
Every woman on the planet wants that kind of love. Every one. That last image, the look on Rocky's face, the relief and the comfort, the joy and the pain, the pure love...god, this is a great movie.
Listen . . . . I have never cared about sports movies OR movies about men with something to prove. But watching Rocky go the distance with Apollo just makes me feel the emotions I never understood before. Completely understand why it won best picture.
My favorite ending in cinema history. Especially when the announcer is announcing Apollo Creed as the winner as Rocky and Adrian embrace. If a deaf person was watching they would have thought Rocky won based on his reaction. Makes me tear up every time, simply fantastic.
Beautiful ending .. about 2 people who found each other. I love that it's just as much about the underdog Adrian overcoming her fears, tentatively wanting to turn back, but then she pushes through the crowd, into the ring at center stage and yells that she loves him. So moving.
As a kid watched this movie over and over just for the boxing... didn’t realize till I was older just how amazing the love story to this movie really is... perfect ending
I cried too...Like a baby!! I just don't know why I get so emotional every time I watch this particular scene!! Bill Conti's powerful musical score and the emotion and pain were so realistic on Sylvester Stallone's and Carl Weather's battered, bruised faces!! It pushed me over the top! But Sylvester Stallone, "killed" this role!!! He definitely deserved that Oscar, he was nominated for back in 1976!!! He lost to Peter Finch, for his performance in the film "Network." Awesome, Powerful iconic boxing scene and a Great movie!! Sylvester Stallone was "robbed" of that statue on Oscar night in 1977!
he didnt win that year. He lost to the guy from Network. i think it was Peter Finch. It was a tough year nonetheless, one of the greatest in cinematic history, he was up against Deniro in Taxi driver, which i still think isnt even as good as Stallones performance.
It has one of the best cinema build ups and closer/endings in movie history. It was basically a Cinderella scenario/ American dream scenario . A man who was nothing, a bum, who had no respect, the girl he wanted was shy if not a little afraid of him, and generally disrespected/ had no respect. An opportunity of a lifetime dropped on his lap, he trained and worked hard, the girl warmed up to him, everyone who knew he existed was starting to KNOW he exists. In the end everything on a rapid incline came together and all goals are met: He went the distance with the Champ, his determination and will to fight accomplished, his woman announces her love for him, his loneliness vanquished and longing for love met, and he was not only respected by his people, but loved by his entire home town. It ended Right at that point, at the paramount of accomplishment. So very few movies have ever accomplished this correctly.
Me too, and I think there are a few reasons why. First, Rocky gets one shot at a chance to show his qualities-to prove himself to the world, and he gives it every fiber of his strength, spirit, and endurance. He rises to the occasion so well. We admire Rocky for taking the chance and rising to the occasion so well-but still being himself. Second, in going through the story, he discovers his true purpose in life, which is to love Adrian. Being her man, her husband, is his vocation. The boxing match becomes his way of showing the lengths he will go for her. I think that in a way, he kind of lays down his life for her in the boxing match. Third, the filmmaking in this final scene is excellent. The editing, music, and story come together in a way that makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. In the chaos in the ring after the match, we see that Rocky cares for nothing else than to have Adrian by his side, but very slyly, in the background to the main action, the director is telling the end of the story. Most movies would make a big deal of the result of the match, and then tack on the embrace of Rocky and Adrian. But the way the director does it here is genius. It is a split decision. Does Rocky pull out the improbable victory? The first judge goes for Creed. The second for Rocky. As Adrian embraces Rocky in the ring and he says, "I love you", the announcer says, "And still heavyweight champion of the world, Apollo Creed." In his moment of complete joy, we find out that Rocky has just lost the heavyweight championship of the world.
This scene is so powerful and emotional!! The musical score is so poignant your heart soars, and if you don't cry during this incredible sequence there's a hole in your soul! This scene causes me to weep like a baby! Sylvester Stallone and Bill Conti are Geniuses!! 40 years later, I still cry uncontrollably whenever I watch this final few minutes of Rocky!!
Because Rocky and Adrian are well constructed complex characters who we the audience like and invest in. Adrian desperately wants to overcome her crippling shyness and rough home life. Rocky desperately wants to rise above being a hired thug for a petty loan shark. Both of them want the same thing that all of us, every normal human being in the world, wants - they want to love and be loved. And since we want that too, and since we like these two people, it matters to us and we feel joy when they achieve it. That's their victory, that's what the film is actually about, and that's why I cry like a little girl every time I watch it.
This movie is special because it shows men’s masculinity at its purest expression. Discipline, courage, motivation, training, healthy self esteem. And the most impressive attitude from Rocky is to be a one woman man. At the end he is satisfied because he went beyond and gave his best on the fight, and the only thing that wants is to be next to the woman that showed him what true love is, because glory and money won’t give him the true happiness he’s looking for
I was 12 years old, living in Philadelphia when 'Rocky' was being made. My dad, a boxer & trainer himself at Joe Frazier's gym (our family was close to Frazier, who is also in the film) was also a Philadelphia cop. He told me that a boxing movie was being made. My pop was working night to early morning shifts in South Philadelphia and Center City when the film was being made to protect the movie sets. He said that there was something special going on but he didn't know what it was but that it just felt special. This was also the year (1975) that the city was preparing for the Bicentennial celebrations to come in 1976. When 'Rocky' premiered, first only the guys went to see it and then went again with their girlfriends and wives, telling them that it was a 'love story' (despite not being believed at first.) The film broke all records in Philadelphia and word of mouth spread nationwide and the rest is history.
My father saw Rocky as a child in Taiwan and became one of his favorite movies. When the opportunity came to study in America, he had the opportunity to study in Chicago or Los Angeles, but ultimately chose Philadelphia, because of Rocky. He and his wife later settled here, and its where I was born and raised, because of Rocky.
When rocky gets up and waves him on like cmon im still here. And apollos reaction. Like you gotta be kidding me. What do I have to do to keep this guy from getting up. Its almost a sadness mixed with disbelief. RIP Apollo.
55 yr old dude......still absolutely fuckin loves this feel-good classic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tears are falling down as hard now as they did when I first felt the 'spirit' of ROCKY up on the big-screen when I was just a lil bumpkin back in the 1976. Those of us 'underdogs' who have had to fight through child-abuse growing up, mental afflictions, addictions, poverty, homelessness --- survived, thrived and today feel fully-alive have the 'warrior spirit' of Rocky to fight through anything, climb-up and get back on top! God Bless Us, Light & Love__________mykey from toronto
The biggest moment of the franchise is when the announcer stated “split decision”. Rocky’s only goal is to make it through to the end without getting murdered so he can go back to his love and this is the first realization that he exceeded his goal by a large margin, but the depth of his effort is insignificant next to his love for Adrian. That’s the power of true heart. It’s impossible to beat.
"Ladies and gentlemen" "Your attention please" "Tonight" "We have had the privilege of witnessing, the greatest exhibition of guts and stamia in the history of the ring"
I wonder if this kind of fight would even be possible today. Would a modern day referee actually allow to fighters to just pummel each other this way for 15 rounds without stopping the match? The only similar fight I can think of in recent years was Fury vs Wilder #1
The sweetest moments in life is to those who always mocked you & told you can't do anything & treated you like you're a worthless nothing that you finally show them you did something great. Afterwards they all come around you to flatter you, but you just ignore them & treat them like air as if they don't exist.
It's amazing how some movies no matter how many times you see it, gets you so emotionally involved. This is one of them. I still cheer that Rock went the distance & got the girl he always wanted. He was a winner without winning the fight!
Rest in peace carl weathers, your work on the rocky movies are wonderful. The best choice to do Apollo Creed. At first, they picked somebody to do Apollo Creed.
The ending always makes me cry! I'm a huge fan! I started watching Rocky when i was 10. I cried more during the Rocky series than any chick flick lol btw I'm a girl!
This scene pretty much encapsulates rocky's character when Apollo looks over in utter disbelief and frustration that Rocky simply won't stay down. Just perfect. 👏
The freeze frame ending was pure cinema gold. Deserved to win the Best Picture Oscar in 1977 imo for being such an inspirational piece of movie making.
I like all the Rocky movies but nothing compares to this one. It’s perfect on three different levels: it’s an awesome, adrenaline-pumping sports/action movie; it’s a gritty and convincing and realistic character study/Cinderella-man story; and the knockout punch is that it’s a beautiful love story. I’m sure when Stallone wrote those final lines he knew he’d created something great. Rocky: Adrian. Adrian: Rocky. Rocky: Where’s your hat? Adrian: I love you. Rocky: I love YOU! (of course) Adrian: I love you. Adrian repeats “I love you” 3 times, I think, and the first time she says it as if she’s surprised. She’s discovered real love (been in love all along) and has just now realized it. It doesn’t matter whether Rocky’s won or lost the fight or whether there’s gonna be a rematch - none of that matters! Rocky’s not a bum, Adrian’s not a nobody, and the two are completely in love and nothing else matters. And everyone who’s seen this movie loves them both. A magical ending to a perfect movie. This is Stallone’s major contribution to film (and to humanity, really?!) and it will always be his legacy.
Apollo was used to knocking out his opponents in 3 rounds. Even though Rocky did not win the championship title, he won by both hurting Apollo and going the distance. After this fight, the loser was relaxed and having fun while the champion was frustrated over not being able to knock out his opponent.
0:50 right there is such a crazy scene. Rocky’s stance looks so fucking iconic with his hunchback, sway-like maneuver. Then, he dodges creeds hit and hits him right there in the ribs, along with the music. Damn this fight is so good.
One of the most moving endings to any film out there! Rocky doesn't win the fight, but wins the journey of a lifetime and the heart of someone who believes in him!
Perfect ending to a perfect film. The film is for all of us who perhaps don't have many wins in life... but are prepared to go the distance. It's a tribute to the hard worker, the quiet and the honest. Rocky is not a gifted boxer like creed. But he's definitely a fighter.
It still blows me away how much emotion, power and character arc are progressed in literally 3 seconds when it shows Adrian's face up close. Rocky told her to not leave because it'll be over quick. She finally steps out to see what is going on and it's the 15th round and he's getting massacred but showing a gutsy performance. Her closing her eyes in pain of not wanting to see him get hurt but then opening them to watch is just so powerful. I tear up every time.
It didn't matter who won for rocky because for him he was able to prove to himself that he wasn't a bum and that he would keep standing until the end this movie is a masterpiece!
I love how even though he loses Rocky doesn’t even care and it’s not treated like a sad ending. He went the full 15 rounds, something he openly admitted was all he wanted to do and that he didn’t think he could do. Him asking for his eye to be cut open, him telling Creed he doesn’t want a rematch. He just wants to prove to himself that he isn’t some bum. That he could go the full 15 with the champ himself.
I don't know how many times I have watched this movie. And all the other Rockies. I was a young man in junior high school when this all started. We used to listen to the Rocky music on cassette headphones in the library to get pumped up for our football game. Sylvester Stallone and his imaginary friend Rocky did very well!
This is one of the most brilliant endings of a movie I have ever seen. The hero loses but the movie ends with the hero still having won. I also love how the announcement that Rocky lost via split decision is completely drowned out because it doesnt matter to Rocky at all. He went the distance, proved him, and got the girl.
One of the best endings ever. No villains. Nothing but love from everyone. Apollo didn't want to hurt Rocky anymore Butch wanted to end the fight to protect Apollo. Micky wanted Rocky to stay down. Adrianne had to look away. Great acting all around. RIP Carl Weathers.

Bro of course, it was never about winning and losing. It was about proving to himself that he could go toe-toe with anybody, including the champ. That’s why he said “Don’t want one” when Apollo said “Ain’t gonna be no rematch”. Because he already got what he wanted outta the fight.
That was the intent of the movie. It was supposed to tell a wholesome story. I think you’re saying they did a good job
Among the greatest endings in cinematic history, and perhaps the single greatest freeze frame ending to a movie.
I agree 100%. Very authentic ending and not pretentious at all.
Right there with Truffaut´s "400 blows"
@@noimpostura What Are You Talking About. Who's Truffaut.
Karate Kid 1 great freeze frame ending too! Same director.
@@noimpostura Exactly 🙂
I always consider this more of a love story then a boxing story
True,
Same for Rocky 2.
In Third, It's become personal for Rocky Balboa.
It's both.
@@ezekieldiakite6618 it's a love story with a boxing background
You get it.
It’s a life story.
Here after the sad news of Carl Weathers passing. And to mention his beautiful performance in this scene. No words, just disbelief as Rocky gets up and beckons him for more. RIP Carl. Iconic
The look on his face to me is one of the defining moments of the film. He says so much by doing so little in that scene.
David Goggins was inspired by Carl's look. Says he tries to give it to others
Rocky didn't win the fight, but won his life and Adrian's heart.
That's what can make us winners. Not just a trophy or a medal, but the road until the glory.
🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺👏👏👏👏👏
Rocky knew that he had no business fighting a boxer of Apollo Creed's league. His only concern was going the distance and remaining standing in the end. And with Adrian embracing him in his moment of personal triumph, made this ending that much more powerful and impactful. A classic film for the ages.
Real men cry at the end of Rocky 1
Yep!
I,ve had a few women in my life but how many of us MEN WISH we had an ADRIAN in our life that loved us the way she made him feel? A woman you would give it all away for and she not expecting nothing in return?
you got that right
the ending is perfect. the outcome of the match is literally pushed into the background and what really matters is what's focused on. if you truly love somebody - this scene should ring VERY true. it's just a stupid match.. if you have her love that's all that matters.
+For Your Consideration Hey, I don't love anyone and still, I'm mad about this end scene, watch for what you say mister "rude I'm in love with someone" xP
+Greyzlack But you got loooove in you!
For Your Consideration he lost the fight but he won her heart
I also like how, at least I think, Paulie redeems himself for all the bad things he did in the movie by simply pulling up on the rope to let Adrian slip into the ring.
I never noticed that before!
It made "Eye of the Tiger" a hit
And Rocky 4 inspired Olympian Michael Phelps when he trained for the Olympics - that Ivan Drago training montage!
Authentic and genuine.
Very well said.
Adrian(Rocky 5) "When you took those beatings....I took them WITH YOU!"
Maybe because we are not longer humans
One of the greatest movie scores of alltime. Bill Conti produced some absolute iconic songs that will still be known 100 years from now
The most underrated part of this movie is right after the fight and the two boxers are clinched. The crowd and the spectacle is dubbed out for the moment and all you can hear is "ain't gonna be no rematch, ain't gonna be no rematch." "Don't want one" This moment defines the key difference in these two characters and is a great moment to have right before the eruption of music and the chaotic ending Adrian!! scene,
Even though the second movie is mostly about Apollo trying to lure Rocky back into the ring for a rematch.
@@natedoggcata it wasn't money, it was his jilted pride because viewers accused him of rigging the fight.
@@gargantuaism THANK YOU! I feel like I'm going insane. It's a few bars of "Alone in the Ring" that play just after the final bell and before Rocky and Apollo embrace. It adds SO MUCH to the scene, and I have no idea why it isn't in most edits.
It's 2024 and this ending still makes cry god damn it. Adriam and her hat was more important to Rocky than the who won the fight, that's real love
The unusually pure love chemistry between Rocky and Adrian was nothing short than genius. No wonder Stallone wouldn’t sell his movie script unless he played Rocky himself. Nobody knew Rocky better than Stallone
*Rocky screams some unintelligible mess of a sentence*
"You heard him, lades and gentlemen!"
BACHUR my fucking god i am dying 😆

Bachur he said there was gonna be no rematch oh come on I’ve had of these things all day
Awwwww, Paulie held the rope to let Adrian in the ring.
+NYG4LIFE123 "He's everyone's firend!" said the guard.
Never caught that. Awesome
Underrated scene actually 👍🏼
I always liked the sly (no pun intended) way that Paulie did that
@PatricksCrazyPlace......Good 'eye' bro.
Let's her sneak onto the ring so she can be with Rocky.
great point Mitch! Very perceptive on your part and a detail that is often lost amid the drama at the end.
I think the point was that Rocky allowed people to picture themselves as better people. He gave his all and it rubbed off on them.
@@robmaddison8645 boom👍
@@robmaddison8645 an incredible way to look at it
I think, in general, Paulie is a really complex character that people always go like “he’s an abuser towards his sister!”, which is true, but it’s not simply that or just because. Maybe that’s what Paulie is lacking, something to make him realize the love surrounding him
That score is simply so powerful. 43 years later and still moves the heart
By far , one of the BEST endings to a movie of ALL TIME. More is happening in the final 3 minutes of this movie that most have in their entire time.
best movie ending of all time is easily fight club
I also like the chase scene at the end of Last Of The Mohicans. Like this, so many individual character arcs come to an epic climax.
2 is better knowing he actually got it done
She said in Rocky 5 that when he took those beatings she took them with him.
"What did you think about-"

“Tonight we have had the privilege of witnessing the greatest exhibition of guts and stamina in the history of the ring.” The music. The emotion. The chaos. The screaming. “Where’s your hat?”. This could very well be the greatest ending to any movie in history. Genius.
Such a perfect film. I love how the outcome of the fight is unimportant to Rocky. He proved he is not a loser and he won the heart of the woman he loves. As Stallone said it, the final still shot is a frame of the top moment in Rocky's life.
That is why I hate the sequels so much. He's already won....the titles are irrelevant in Rocky's life!
jjman9 Absolutely correct. The sequels completely went against what made this film great and seriously damaged this film's place in history.
jjman9 Granted, most sequels are bad ideas, but some sequels are also great, like Rocky 2, The Godfather 2, etc.
In a sense, Rocky is more like Drago in Rocky II
jjman9 I saw the Rocky 2 as the realization of a former bum who was suddenly saddled with celebrity status, the struggles with that, and whether he should risk his health and family for a rematch.
I cry every time I see this. I love how low the volume of announcer is when he announces Creed won. The point of the movie wasn’t about winning, it was about courage. Just beautiful.
R.I.P to the great Carl Weathers. He played the Creed character exceptionally. Owned every scene he was in.
This is a scene that will be with me for the rest of my life. Every time I feel defeated in life I watch it, it has the magical power of getting me back on track.
Apollo lowering his head in disbelief always gets me. Superb moment in the film. Carl Weathers is truly underrated in Hollywood.
That hits harder now 😢
One of the most overlooked best pictures.
I love Creed's expression when Rocky stands up. Amazing performances from both actors.
Nathaniel Drain Absolutely. And the accompanying music. There were SO many subtleties in Rocky, which is what made it SUCH a great movie.
+Mike S Agree. Also the scene when the promoter is grinning while watching Rocky unexpectedly put up a fight. Such great subtlety unlike the sequels where everything is spelled out for the viewer.
Ahhh Burt Young. The Joe Pesci before Joe Pesci.
Very true. He was good in The Pope of Greenwich Village too.
Burt is raspy....Joe is high pitchy
Ironically enough they both were in a scene together in Once upon a time in America
Just Adrian saying “I love you” while Apollo is being announced the winner makes me wanna cry
After enduring the most physically painful, longest fight in his life with the heavy wieght champion of the world Rocky still remembers what Adrian was wearing before the fight started.
Little touches like that are what makes this movie as great as it is

Probably one of the best climactic endings in cinema history! Everything about it is perfect: The cuts, the angles, the performances, THE MUSIC!
Listen . . .
I can’t emotionally handle the ending of this movie the music just makes it all so perfect
The music is superb, so well done, making it more of such an emotional ending!
Beautiful ending .. about 2 people who found each other. I love that it's just as much about the underdog Adrian overcoming her fears, tentatively wanting to turn back, but then she pushes through the crowd, into the ring at center stage and yells that she loves him. So moving.
00:14 “DOWN DOWN STAY DOWN” always makes me tear up cause we know Mickey is expressing general concern for Rocky
I totally agree that. I can feel his concern and warm heart to Rocky. ❤
Very true. After spending much of the movie telling Rocky he has no heart, Mickey realized Rocky is showing TOO MUCH heart.
Kale Paladeau
he won best picture. he wasn't the director...but it was his script. plus it got 2 more oscars
@@kaster999 My mistake! You're definitely correct about that sir!
Every time I watch this movie, the ending makes me cry and I don't know why.
As Adrian embraces Rocky in the ring and he says, "I love you", the announcer says, "And still heavyweight champion of the world, Apollo Creed." In his moment of complete joy, we find out that Rocky has just lost the heavyweight championship of the world.
schmitzd04 Plus the best prize at the end, the love of his woman :)
schmitzd04 Ah sorry only just realized there was more lines to your comment, yeah you hit the nail on the head.
Adrien is my definition of "wife material"
Word on that..
This movie is special because it shows men’s masculinity at its purest expression. Discipline, courage, motivation, training, healthy self esteem.
And the most impressive attitude from Rocky is to be a one woman man. At the end he is satisfied because he went beyond and gave his best on the fight, and the only thing that wants is to be next to the woman that showed him what true love is, because glory and money won’t give him the true happiness he’s looking for
One of the greatest achievements in the history of Cinema.
RIP Carl Weathers...
Did anyone heart broke when Rocky got knocked down in the beginning of the video? Every time I see it I get goosebumps. Crazy....
The true heart break is how Adrian couldn't watch. And how she wanted him to stay down. But when she stays and comes to him. Epic.
"down down, stay down"
Mickey protecting Rocky brings tears to my eyes
The music gets me every time. Still amazing after all these years!
God Bless Us,
Light & Love__________mykey from toronto
The biggest moment of the franchise is when the announcer stated “split decision”. Rocky’s only goal is to make it through to the end without getting murdered so he can go back to his love and this is the first realization that he exceeded his goal by a large margin, but the depth of his effort is insignificant next to his love for Adrian. That’s the power of true heart. It’s impossible to beat.
This is one of my favorite endings of any movie of all time, Rocky will forever be a masterpiece with unforgettable characters
"Ladies and gentlemen"
"Your attention please"
"Tonight" "We have had the privilege of witnessing, the greatest exhibition of guts and stamia in the history of the ring"
They weren't whistling Dixie.
I wonder if this kind of fight would even be possible today. Would a modern day referee actually allow to fighters to just pummel each other this way for 15 rounds without stopping the match? The only similar fight I can think of in recent years was Fury vs Wilder #1
This is the exact part that always gets me.

True, and that makes his actual win in the sequel all the more sweet
Only a few movies that had more men emotionally involved than their wives

This scene pretty much encapsulates rocky's character when Apollo looks over in utter disbelief and frustration that Rocky simply won't stay down. Just perfect. 👏
The freeze frame ending was pure cinema gold. Deserved to win the Best Picture Oscar in 1977 imo for being such an inspirational piece of movie making.
The apollo head bow when rocky gets up is one of the greatest shots in the franchise
The older I get the more I think Stallone was and is a wonderful actor
@KTV 4U you'll understand one day
I like all the Rocky movies but nothing compares to this one.
(of course)
Adrian: I love you.
One of the greatest movies and inspirational stories off all time, masterpiece!!
Who else cried
+Irish Two I did!
Me, no shame!
when they tell him to stay down and he gets up regardless. That's Life condensed into a matter of seconds
Best ending ever!!
Possibly the greatest 5 minutes in cinematic history. So much right here, the music, reaction, the human triumph, the love.
The best time to be alive to watch a film such as that with my father in Philadelphia at Independence Hall truly awesome
And still champion of the world...Apollo CREED!
RIP Carl😢
One of the greatest cinematic scenes ever, from one of the greatest movies (if not, THE BEST), from THE BEST cast of characters in movie history....PERIOD. To: Carl Weathers, Burt Young, Burgess Meredith, Talia Shire and Sylvester Stallone. THANK YOU ALL FOR GIVING US SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN, SOMETHING TO HOPE FOR AND, FOR SOMETHING THAT TRANSCENDS TIME; the thought and hope, that everyone can rise above ANYTHING. That means so much more now, than ever before. RISE ABOVE, AMERICANS, NO MATTER YOUR "STATION", RISE ABOVE!!!
This movie had the subtlety the others lacked. One of the all time greats.
Wow.....tear jerker, EVERY time...very incredible passion
Beyond the great and convincing acting of her I love You, the way Rocky is holding her is just as dramatic. If you have ever really loved someone you hold them tight like that
My dad said when he was watching this film in the theater every body was screaming it was so intense like a real boxing fight even it’s a movie
The look of absolute disappointment on Apollo's face when Rocky stands up gives me goosebumps.
