I'm actually a new convert from a non-denominational church. I'm going through RCIA right now and I'm writing a series of apologetic papers as a response to the questions I've been getting from my protestant friends. This video has been great on information for defending the Papacy. I would love to read the full book!
I'm on the same journey. Former non-denominational youth pastor, Bible college grad. Not looking back. Can't "unsee" the truth. Stay strong, and be as gentle and respectful as you can muster. There's a lot of unwarranted passion and more heat than light in Protestant arguments.

Just left Methodist Church after 20 years. Raised Catholic but no one ever told me the Catholic Church was to be a defender of HIS truth nor warned me that Protestants don’t know what they believe because there is no authority.
For me this is all about Unity in The Truth. I cannot preach or teach or live out my Christianity if I don’t have some level of confidence in the teaching of my church. It looks like Catholicism is the answer. The Catholic Catechism is amazing!!
I hope to influence other Methodists to see the light especially since the Methodist church is imploding because it isn’t even trying to find the truth regarding human sexuality. But I will be very loving and respectful and just focus on the Truth found here. Never really learned much that wasn’t pretty similar to Catholic beliefs. Just don’t have any of the fullness or depth of the Catholic Church.

I would become Catholic except for the fact that I can't perform the mental gymnastics required to accept papal supremacy.
In the video he performs some excellent moves to try to force a biblical precedent to make St. Peter "the first pope". But the arguments are silly.
"Because he said 'lets go fishing" and they literally went fishing is supposed to mean there's an infallible king of the Christians?
What?...
"I'm gonna pray for you because I know you'll deny me 3 times".
Must mean he's the supreme Bishop?
I can't accept this. It wasn't even a thing in the early church to have a supreme Bishop. That idea didn't occur to anyone at all in the church for nearly a thousand years.
Nice try. An “infallible king”? Where is that in Catholic teaching? He is actually the Servant of the Servants of God. I think you underestimate yourself. You are actually very good at mental gymnastics. You have the ability to recreate Catholicism into something that it isn’t and then proceed to tear it down. You have confirmation bias. Just try being fair and disagree if you wish to ACTUAL Catholic teaching.

This talk was extremely helpful especially with helping to describe papal infallibility. To be honest, even as a Cradle Catholic, I only recently was introduced to this term. Understanding that this does not mean the Pope cannot sin or “do no wrong” is very critical. Thanks to both of you! Love this show! Im in a similar boat as you, I knew of papal infallibility, but not exactly what it is, and everything with the pope has been making me question. I'm glad to see this video. Really helped me understand stuff better.
I've been a fan of Joe's website, "Shameless Popery," for a long time. He's a brilliant writer and apologist. So glad he decided to write the book.
There's so much to unpack in this video, almost like a movie which you have to watch a couple of times to get the full understanding. I think I've watched this three times now and I keep discovering new information. Joe Heschmeyer is extremely knowledgeable and I love watching his videos where he debates or provides answers to things such as the papacy or anything else.

I am currently trying to become a Catholic tried doing the RCIA but I had some scheduling issues along with this pandemic and trying to stay charitable to my wife that is a little more concerned about it than I am. I talked with the deacon and decided to wait till the following year.

Joe's book is surely the most helpful piece of shameless popery i have come across to date. If we understand the papacy properly we begin to see what a great gift we have been blessed with in the doctrine of infallibility. Such assurance is sadly not accessible for outsiders but we must thank The Lord for inspiring Joe to put this in such lucid presentation for all.

I literally began reading Steve Ray's 'Upon This Rock' the day that this was streamed lol! In my recent research I have heard a lot of that material in other places already (though not as condensed), but this video is incredibly eye-opening. I have been softening to the Papacy largely because of that point that the office of the Pope is as a servant rather than some kind of theological dictator (not to mention the overwhelming historical evidence). Not sure if you are still giving away copies of the book, but I would love one if you are. Great video!

Hi @Matt Fradd, I am a cradle Catholic that always struggles with Protestants that always attack me on the pope. Sometimes it evens perturbs my spiritual peace and I would really love to learn how to defend it. Thank you and God bless! Hopefully if the Lord wills it, I could be a potential candidate for receiving a really helpful book like Pope Peter. It would really help strengthen my faith.
As a cradle Protestant (but certainly moving towards Catholicism), I will say that the case for papacy looks stronger and stronger. When I first encountered the biblical grounding for the papacy I only heard of the "on this rock I'll build my church"-defense. At that time I was amazed how much the Catholics were able to build upon that tiny biblical foundation. Later, much, much, later it has started to dawn on me that Jesus first and foremost chooses people and he chooses them for the purpose of leading after he has gone. Nowhere does he say to the followers: "Make sure to take notes - it's important that we'll have the New Testament ready as soon as I am gone". He doesn't say anything about that - why? For the average Protestant that is a mystery, since Protestants rest upon "Scripture Alone". But, no, Jesus chooses people - and clearly those 12 above the 70 disciples. Of the 12 he chooses 3, and of those 3 he chooses 1. There is a lot of choosing! But it doesn't stop there - the hierarchal thinking is not a human invention. It's divine! The Son submits to the Father! So it has become impossible for me to think the church was something like a "commune" or a "consensus-based-church". The NT itself is a testimony to the importance of the Apostles - only those things that could be traced back to them was worth listening to.
All in all, there can be no doubt Peter had a special position. It can be no doubt Jesus was much more interested in setting up leadership of the new church that making sure the gospels were written. This undermines the Protestant thinking so much it makes it untenable. Sola Scriptura has to go! Where should we go? Well, to the church Jesus started, to which Peter was given the keys. There could perhaps be a small argument to made over whether Peter actually went to Rome or not - that's the only loophole I can see at this point. I think you can meet your Protestant friends with confidence. But be gentle :)

Morten Simonsen Wow thank you so much for this lengthy and learnèd response. This was a really good response coming from a cradle Protestant! Wow, it really is true that when a Protestant converts or is at least is close to converting, they are able to articulate the evidence of the Catholic faith better than a lot of cradle Catholics like me! @Rolando Velásquez I am not sure we can find any church without bad leaders. The catholic church had a lot of political power and would have attracted power-hungry people.
Do you think there are churches that don't have this problem with bad leaders? Do you think Mike Winger's church would be without really bad leaders if they grew really big for 500 or 1000 years? I don't think so.
Martin Luther and Calvin certainly weren't without serious flaws! Calvin directly went against Jesus on remarriage! Luther made sure the church and the state went into a complete union - nowhere in the world was there such a merge between secular and spiritual power as in Scandinavia.
I have seen some of Mike Winger. He seems genuine but like many Protestants - too sure of his interpretations and he has a lack of knowledge of Catholicism (fed on myths like all Protestants). Trent did rebut a lot of his criticism.
Overall Protestants should really stop harassing Catholics with all sorts of bad and uninformed arguments. Rather, we should listen carefully with an open mind with the goal to overcome the differences between us. Jesus wanted us to unite, and we must do so. To badmouth a Christian brother is to do the work of the Devil. Yes, we must condemn heresy, but only if that is 100% sure.

Way to go Matt!! Good to know that you will bring light to a very dark subject regarding our current pope! Here we are almost 104 years after the warnings of Fatima were given to us. Apostasy within the Church was one of the biggest signs of those times Our Lady spoke about. How can anyone not see where we are today?? One would have to be (or remain) blind to it. May the Lord have mercy on us!

Using my very limited math skills, Matt spent roughly 7 hours and 22 minutes if he reads at the average speed of 1.7 minutes per page. So if he split that time up evenly over the weekend that's 3 hours and 41 minutes a day. I'm a single man and I'm still incredibly impressed. You've inspired me to work at reading significantly more, Matt. I realize you're likely not spending that amount of time every day sitting and reading a book, but I think I need to stop patting myself on the back for just reading a mere 30 minutes (which I don't even do everyday cuz I'm a procrastinator), like I've made a big accomplishment. If I'm genuinely gonna up my knowledge of the Catholic faith, I'm going to have to work harder, if I want to have even close to the knowledge of an apologist before the time I'm 80.

I enjoyed this presentation. As always Matt learned a lot from your guest, Joe. When it comes to Pope Francis no one seems to want to sit in prayer regarding his Papacy. Everyone jumps to conclusions before he has a chance to present anything to the Church. Many misconstrue what he is trying to do. Namely heal old wounds.
He has refused to meet with the dubia cardinals and Cardinal Zen of China. The dubia cardinals have been asking for clarification for 4 years now I think that's waiting enough time.

Great episode. I'm an Anglican who is open to the Roman Catholic Church, but I have not been convinced of the papal claims. I think Joe makes a good argument. I plan to get his book and am currently reading Steve Ray's book also. I'm curious, though, Joe, what are the most compelling Protestant or Orthodox works against the papacy, in your view? It's easy to get caught up in an argument when you're only reading one side, so I want to be sure to read the best arguments of both sides. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you for this discussion. I always find that despite this being the doctrine which ultimately separates us from every other denomination we don't tend to focus apologetic efforts on this issues. Almost every other doctrine is easier for me than this one but we also share almost every other doctrine with one denomination or another. This is very helpful.

New Catholic here. And I will say this. Pope Francis has proven to me beyond a shadow of doubt that the Catholic Church is true. Alot of people say he is a bad Pope, maybe he is. But he hasn't been able to use his position to change Church teaching. He his ambiguous and creates confusion, but the Church still stands. Plus, I was Protestant, so maybe I'm used to chaos in the church and different beliefs among leaders. But this Pope issue has definitely strenthened my faith!!

I remember many years back when reading the part of scripture were Peter drags the boat a shore, and the Holy Spirit showing me the link with Papacy. I was so thrilled. We must pray for pope Francis because he is causing great schism in the church, like most modernists, "Science" unfortunately is their golden rule and measuring stick. Therefore they have moved God's boundaries. The Marian apparitions have been warning against this for a long time now. God bless.

The authority of the Pope is always one one of the biggest hurdles for people coming from Protestant backgrounds. These arguments are great and will help me explain to my protestant brothers why we believe in Rome.
It's more than that. There was/is a lot of corruption in the church, and people within involved in nefarious practices.

The issue is what church is TRYING as hard as it can to be the one TRUE church? It seems only the Catholic Church (but still researching that).

I was listening to this video while running with my 4 year old. When Joe dove so deeply into Matthew 6 about how the apostles' silence without Peter (guided by the Holy Spirit), I had to explain to my son why it's not okay to exclaim "Holy crap that's awesome!" like I did 😂

I find it easy to believe and even Biblical that God’s people misunderstand Scriptures for hundreds of years. For example, the Jews not understanding Isaiah 53 when Jesus came or theologians giving up on trying to interpret the Apocalypse. It doesnt mean God abandoned anyone; we just means we didnt see everything in every era, but God was faithful.
Wow, this had a lot of arguments and references / explanations I had never heard before.
SYNECDOCHE is the term he was thinking of around 1:05:45 for "the gates of hell" referring to the "city itself." His example of saying "nice wheels" to compliment someone's car is a synecdoche. Or saying "Bayern won the Champions League," where "Bayern" is referring to Bayern Munich, the soccer team in the city Munich in Germany.
This was very interesting on so many levels. He addresses our disfunction but does so without harping and enforcing unity, I don't see this in all commentators. Great and refreshing

The only thing in the entire video I would moderately disagree with would have been the statement that ambiguity isn't unifying. To be honest, I think ambiguity is almost the only unifying trait there is in a world that's so divided. To unify two distinct "parties" or "groups" etc. that are more and more becoming utterly black vs white, there has to be a miraculous gray play from the force that is unifying. Even that being said, this entire episode was absolutely BRILLIANT! Can't wait to read Joe's book!
That was an amazing discussion. The only thing I wish he went more into was the geography and the setting of Matthew 16. I think with that information supporting the rest of the argument would really tie everything together well.
Minor quibble -@41:20, the text I have says (just after Peter jumps into the water)

Indicating they got the boat to shore but left the net trailing behind in the water. If they couldn't haul it in earlier, there is no reason to suspect they could manage it simply because they were at the shore. Doesn't actually change anything you said in terms of Peter, at the command of Jesus, single-handed, hauling the net in and bringing it ashore.

If you aren`t Catholic you (Protestants in particular) really need to read Pope Peter and carefully examine your beliefs. I am about halfway through and it`s very convincing. I think that if you`re Catholic you should consider reading it to be able to show others why being Catholic does make a lot of sense.

Sounds like the Honorius situation is similar to the Peter vs Paul scenario on Gentile circumcision. Peter first leans toward what ends up being incorrect. For me, neither the Peter vs Paul nor the Honorius scenario disproves the teaching on papal infallibility because it is only in situations where the pope deliberately and clearly speaks from the chair of Peter on a matter of faith that papal infallibility is exercised. The pope can be wrong when not deliberately speaking from the chair of peter on matters of faith.
Besides, Paul doesn’t correct Peter’s teachings, but Peter’s conduct.

Well, our Evangelical-Protestant brothers make a simple confusion on this.
“Impeccability” is not a concept for us. Every Bishop of Rome confesses. Every single one of them. That is pretty obvious to an educated Catholic. For some wicked Pope we had a huge majority of Popes who were not only good Christians, and some even lived the “heroic Christians virtues”, as we call them “saints” like St Leo the Great, St Gregory the Great, St Pious V or St John Paul II, for example.
If you understand this in good faith, bad Popes wouldn’t make a case for or against anything, since every Pope is a sinner and not impeccable.
But “infallibility” in SOME teachings (and under specific circumstances, we call “ex cathedra”) is an ecclesial and ‘petrine’ charism.
Even the Pharisees were recognized by Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as having binding teaching authority when they preached “EX CATHEDRA”, and that means (on the context of the Mosaic Law and the Ancient Covenant) - theologically- when they taught “sitting” in “Moses’s Seat”. But they were hypocrites and sinners, so the faithful had to listen to those of their teachings, but not to imitate their conduct.

To see this kind of confusion only reinforces the general impression that our Protestant brothers (in general) don’t have a clue on what the Catholic Church truly teaches or they’d rather represent it always as a bad caricature of itself.

In Acts we see Peter confirming Gentiles Christians do not need to be circumcised and the incident when Paul confronted Peter in Galatians was on a matter of only eating with Jewish Christians as not to offend them by eating with Gentile Christians.
