it's up there, their artwork also never disappoints, my favourite is Blood Mountain tho it speaks to the troglodyte in me ^^
they never settle for simple formulas its cool everybody can find sth different in their work, Leviathan is also masterfully done
Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering whale; to the last I grapple with thee; from hell’s heart I stab at thee; for hate’s sake I spit my last breath at thee. Sink all coffins and all hearses to one common pool!

I wish reactors would stop listening to live tracks as their first experience with a song. The original "Colony of Birchmen" had Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age singing along with them, which obviously can't be properly replicated live by the band without him going on tour with them. Play live tracks after hearing what the original sounded like, so you can get an idea of how the band plays live.

I saw them live a few months ago, with Opeth. They were great, they had nonstop energy on stage, the passion was still there. Similar to some of their albums, they would ring out a note at the end of each song and segue right into the next, it was nonstop music. The light and animatics display going on behind them was perfectly psychedelic to go along with the music, and they had a great setlist. Closer was "Blood and Thunder". Really good show. My favorite album is actually "Crack the Skye", it's their most psychedelic/progressive, with tasteful inclusion of some keys/synths and the first time the drummer/lyricist Brann Dailor sings along with the other two guys. But I love Leviathan and Blood Mountain almost equally. All three of these albums are masterpieces. They have no really "bad" albums or songs, just the newer ones aren't as progressive or aggressive as earlier (with cleaner singing). One of my favorite bands, for sure.

I've seen them twice, once at a festival in 2009 and rhenium on tour in 2017. On the tour they started with The Last Baron and I absolutely love the fact they were ballsy enough to kick off a concert with a 13 minute song about astral projection.
They are truly one of the great modern metal bands. Brann on the drums is a monster and the fact he does it while singing too... mind blown. Love their more experimental stuff over the straight ahead metal, but it's all good. And agree with what everyone else said, Crack The Skye is a masterpiece and a total trip.

    2 fun facts:
There are 3 lead singers in the group that share the vocals, the bassist (Troy), Lead guitarist (Brent) and Drummer (Brann).

      Crazy cool Mastodon facts:
      - three band members sing, guitarist, bassist, and drummer
      - Leviathan is the book Moby Dick made into a metal album. Thats the reason for all the nautical themes and tones.
      - the story and guitar parts for Crack the Skye were largely written by the guitarist when he was recovering from a brain hemorrhage.
      - Their guitarist doesnt write any of his solos in advance. Just shows up and plays them over the song a couple times by feel and thats whats on the album.
      - Their first 4 albums are also themed by elements - fire, water, earth, sky (or Aether)

Couple of factoids. Each of their most recent albums were inspired by personal tragedy and death. Skye was Brann Dailor's sister who died when he was a teenager. The Hunter was in tribute to guitarist Brent Hinds brother who died in a hunting accident. Emperor of Sand was inspired by a number of people the guys in the band knew who were battling cancer, and their most recent, Hushed and Grim, was both inspired by and a tribute to their long time manager, who sadly passed away from cancer just after the release of the previous album

    • @JoelWilliamb
      @JoelWilliamb 2 роки тому

I love the replies here with facts about the albums and the inspirations. If that interests you, (its not metal) try some Nick Cave, his later works, say Push The Sky Away or Skeleton Tree. His earlier work is amazing too and probably more well-known than these albums but Push The Sky Away just has a story to tell that really hits and personally I love the slower groove as opposed to the fierce approach he had when he was younger.
On the other end of the spectrum, Listen to the album Buster by Admiral Angry. I have to say it's the heaviest most painful album I've ever heard knowing that the guitarist was dying of Cystic Fibrosis. Daniel played a modified bass, strung up as a guitar tuned down to A. Everything about the sound he creates is so crushing but its also the gap in sound that makes this album so mean, breaks in a song where you have just a snare and a bass creating space, its just bleak.
Side fact, the rest of the band went on to form the band Black Sheep Wall which is relatively well known in the I dunno djent, doom, drone metal scene, whatever its called.

More mastodon videos would be awesome, they have so much insanely good music and nobody else sounds like them, they also have 3 lead vocalists including the drummer Brann Dailor who’s a god tier musician, he sings the chorus on high road. you’ve gotta do their song “roots remain” whenever you do more mastodon, one of their best songs ever and very emotional song because it’s about the guitarists mom who died of cancer.

I don't know anything about the Grammys, but the choice seems fine if that category means what I think it means.
Tenacious D is actually a pretty good band and they are showmen. Also, they are definitely metal, even if not quite as extreme as you've listened to on this channel. So them winning "Best metal *Performance* " isn't that ridiculous in my mind.
Mastodon and the others are more technically competent and I'd personally say better bands that make better music, but if the award is for a "performance". I don't know if I'd personally have given them the award, even if it is for a "performance", but it's not out of the question IMO.

Crack the Skye could be in the conversation for the greatest progressive metal album of all time, only Metropolis part 2 and Colors have a hand in that race.

Very nice reaction, you definitely have a chill vibe 💯 interesting picks as well
Full album reaction would be great, altough I prefer their newer stuff (Once more round the Sun / Emperor of Sand / Hushed and Grimm) besides the Blood Mountain album, which I think is their best album. I always see people loving Crack The Skye the most, which of course is a good album too, just not my favorite

Its Ozzy. Im not even a fan of Ozzy. I used to get frustrated that other metal kids my age pretended to like it. But its undeniable how much Ozzy and Sabbath influenced my favorite music. Brent sounds just like Ozzy and i love it. Its so weird to me that nobody really makes that connection,

You made me laugh....it is "Leviathan". Not Lev-i-a-thon. That was adorable. Yeah, Mastadon is excellent and Brann is a killer drummer. Lots more to enjoy and I hope that you'll post more about them. ;)

similar concepts between the bands you mentioned. but not EARTHY as much as OCEANY. 😂 your thinking of flying whales from Gojira. Gojira singin more climate stuff. MASTODON just describing a book in their style. both have whales. 😎

Unpopular opinion (at least it was back in 2009) among Mastodon fans, but Crack in the Skye is their masterpiece. I am glad they didn't even try to do it again, but moved on, even if I like what came after a lot less. It's weakest track (Quintessence) is still decent, and all others are actually really good. And the last three tracks are my picks for all time top three tracks from Mastodon.

Please do Trivium!! One of best modern metal bands in last 20 years, their music evolved through so much, especially last 3 records are their best work. Its a must, the sin and the sentence, shogun, in waves, in the court of the dragon, what the dead men say - whatever you pick from these wont dissapoint you!
