- The news of Volition's demise has been known for quite some time now but I thought I'd offer my two cents and share some extra insight on the matter.

With how the series is at the moment, the publisher should let those that are working on the sr2 pc patch finish it, it'll be a very good gesture and it'll most certainly honor mike watson.
They couldn't even honour their own fans, so why would they honour what they see as some dead guy from a by gone era?

Just hearing that Volition actually had a good heart for the reboot that would have probably pleased the fans, only for it to be massively undercut by corporate greed, seriously breaks my heart so badly. For a long time, my trust and faith in the studio had been severely destroyed because of everything to do with the reboot, so it's like the rug got pulled out from under me with that last part of the video. I can't wait to see what's in the NDA video, it seems like it'll be juicy with what was here.

Volition lost it since the sr3. It's not like they were forced by "ze bad publishers" to make mid games with awful plots.
Having a "good heart" doesn't equal a good game or a good, well-run company that isn't corrupt. Let alone a good corporate strategy. Volition severely burned not only the playerbase who have been loyal to them since the days of Freespace 1, but they also burned their publisher, The Embracer Group/Deep Silver/THQ-Nordic hard by lying to them incessantly and compulsively and underdeveloping both Saints Row 4 and Agents of Mayhem. Both sides are in the wrong here. Flat fucking out. And no, this is not a false equivalence fallacy either, because both accounts corroborate and neither party are either good, smart or ethical here.

The SR2 patch NEEDS to be finished, besides the great work done by Mike and everyone on the team, it can lead to more people jumping into Saints Row and learn what the peak point of the franchise was.
And mainly, considering the revival Half Life 1 got from the recent anniversary update it just shows that people WILL come back to older titles if they are supported in some shape or form. Just hope that comes to fruition.
Truth, Half Life 1 literally had a peak player count of about 11k for the 25th anniversary update.

At this point, they don't need to finish the patch. They need to completely remake the game. I get that it'll be harder than remaking SR3 but they need to win back fans.
I would kill to hear what the scripts would have been like for the original idea of the reboot. I have been starved for Johnny Gat content since Agents of Mayhem. Even Daniel Dae Kim said when doing Gat Out Of Hell, that he would love to keep voicing Gat. I was so disappointed when the reboot seemed to retcon all my favorite characters. Happy that Volition wanted to bring em back, sucks we didn't get to see it.

Let's be real, the original reboot idea would have still been awful as modern Volition couldn't do it justice. It would be the same mess with a couple more familiar faces.
If the script wasnt a good stoner, adult comedy crime drama with gangsters and hip-hop, or rich cartels and action over drug was, I doubt it was going to be good. Volition hasn't written anything good since SR2, and they always have to throw in some stupid little quirks into the plot, like sci-fi and movie actors. A lot of the stuff in the reboot outside of the pandery cringe, was just stuff they recycled from SRTT, that wasnt about gangsters. Like why the DLC has you pretty much dress up as a guy you don't like, and that guy is some annoying movie actor. Stuff you already do in SRTT.
@@onemorescout Yeah, modern Volition hasnt really proved that they could write a good game themselves. Because it hasnt been good in years under them either, even when they had opportunity. A lot of the stuff they came up with trying to make the characters less of gangsters and more into just corny actors and cartoony, came from them as well. I don't feel like the Dex story would have been as satisfying if the studio doesnt even like the older games enough to recognize the better writing and storyline before they threw it away from SR3, and pretty much mocked the criticism in SR4. They had chances, most of their team left over the years and they hadn't written anything good since SR2. Nobody that likes SR3 ever praises the story or lore, unlike the first 2 games and the alien garbage was just when they knew they went too far.
Now we at least have Gat in a different series

Saints row is a series I’ll look back on with the utmost respect and reverence, but also with an overarching sadness for the tragedy that has been the management of the IP for the past 10 years. Goodbye Volition, you will be missed

@@bachiak1 Didn't help that they kept giving fans garbage themselves after Deep Silver bought them, that they thought they could do anything with the IP and it would sell. From aliens, to demons, goofy secret agents, to hipsters with coffee cups. Apparently not. They knew fans hated the direction they were trying to push but kept doing it anyway until it finally broke people. If the reboot was successful, we'd just be getting a sequel to that. Both Deep Silver and Volition just fucked around too much. Now GTA6 will make them even more of a laughingstock.

To hear that Volition originally wanted the game to be that mix between 2 and 3 just fuels the hate against Deep Silver and Embracer. It could've been absolutely epic. Hopefully DS can redeem themselves, but I'm not holding my breath.
Believing that Deep Silver was to blame for the New Saints Row turning out to be shit and not Volition is just pure blindness from a Volition fan who couldn't accept that the company went to shit. Volition had already made multiple shitty games for years and since at least 2014 were woke when they praised Anita Sarkeesian.
I'm sorry, the fuck? Their last decent game was 2, maybe 3 at times, for sure, but I wouldn't call myself a fan nor am I in any way defending Volition or solely blaming DS. All I'm saying is that hearing this information points some of the blame away from them and it would've been interesting to see what they would've been able to come up with, trying to make a mix of 2 and 3.

I loved SR4 personally as well, but my biggest complaint was the fact that cars became basically obsolete. Customization was always a big part in the games, and one of the things I loved most about the cars were detailing them.
Though I also really enjoyed “How the Saints saved Christmas” DLC, kinda wished SR4 also had something for Halloween. Holiday focused things in games are always fun.
Yeah, I feel like even if they got another greenlight to the IP, they're just going to do the same thing again and just try to make SR into whatever they think is trending and ignore the fanbase. Them behind the scenes with how cocky they were on the reboot pretty much let us know how they felt about the fandom and older games. They also were radio silent after the reboot flopped hard, and never apologized. They just let Volition take all the heat for it, and walked off with the IP while they were mostly the reason why it failed, from their meddling and them not looking for writers that actually liked the genre with the fans after Steve Jaros left and stopped caring.
I NEED that NDA video. Just what you shared in this one, absolutely changed my perspective regarding Volition and what happened to them. They really deserved better! The ending, talking about how the prospects for their future were looking brighter with gearbox, just to have it ripped away... So sad.

Man, hearing about the original vision of the game in relation to the actual released product is a burning fucking hell.
That's what they want you to believe. It has nothing to do with the publisher contrary to what people want to say. Volition is to blame for much of the stuff put in, and they had already proved to be woke back in 2014 when they praised Anita Sarkeesian and said she was right about the First 2 Saints Row games.

For people still waiting on the SR2 PC patch… at this point I’d recommend just watching Flippy’s videos on how to play SR1 and 2 on PC through the Xenia emulator. He even has the DLC packs for both games included for both games.
I wish it was possible to use mods though Xenia
Sr1 is playable from start to finish with emulator but the performance isn't so great
I'm only really playing SR1 on emulator, and that's if the performance/experience starts being acceptable, otherwise...I'll wait

I hope you can make that video on the Saints Row 2 patch, even if it is an hour long. It would be kinda funny if the patch/update released while the video is being made, but the development history and context would still be incredibly valuable to have available publicly. I hope that Deep Silver can do the right thing, and finish it. Even if they have to scrap some multiplayer modes that require servers. 😥

@@PaisiosOfGOAOA Exactly: that patch just probably went into the trash sooner beyond the moment Volition was closed, I'm assume all files with anything they were working on (including the Saints Row 2's patch project) were scrapped / erased and went into void... I wanted to cry when I'm saw that Volition's logo on their office entrance at beginning of the video at 0:26 were already partially removed / wiped out. Basically there were much slower since Mike Watson (the creator of Saints Row 2's Gentleman Of Row Super Mod, known under IdolNinja nickname on Saints Row Mods) died at 2021. Now that patch is gone, guys! Nothing can be done about this, unfortunately.
Separately Saints Row 2 might go into unplayable state since both it and Gentleman Of Row 1.9.2 supermod appears do not work properly under Windows 11, according on some users on Steam Community forums. At same time Windows 10, an OS that is still somewhat more compatible running Saints Row 2 current PC port, is now dropped below 2 years of remaining support, and it already stopped getting new features since 2022... On other side, Windows 11 (and upward possibly) still has that nasty strict restriction for only Intel 8th Gen Coffee Lake CPUs and upward (pretty much only usable on the very few recent generations Intel and AMD CPUs), you still can't even run flawlessly it on PCs with 4th Gen Haswell / 6th Gen Sky Lake / 7th gen Kaby Lake CPUs that're still pretty frequently used on more second-hand entry-level gaming budget PC configurations... This means that around 2027 or 2028, when third-party applications cut out support / discontinue Windows 10 and made them to work on Windows 11 and upward only, current PC version of Saints Row 2 probably won't be usable anymore, similar to last several versions of Apple MacOS version able to now run 64-bit applications and games only, which made basically all older 32-bit games for Mac completely unusable...

As everyone else can agree, i hope someway that the pc patch can come someday. And who knows, maybe someone makes a fanmade project/game with the older VA's, or something to bring nostalgia.
As someone who was a former fan turned casual enjoyer of Saints Row, I find the PC Patch's future to be.... Uncertain.

@@FellianTheDragon Everything points to Deep Silver, just being greedy, dishonest, deceptive, and careless with the IP just looking for a cash-grab off of it because it was Volition's most if not only successful IP. The minute they'd get another chance with it, is when we'd probably get something else like the reboot or AOM, because they don't like or care about the actual fans and the community manager (a deep silver employee) pretty much admitted she wanted to purge people she didnt like in the fandom that didnt like their shitty reboot and got too cocky.

It could have been a great franchise. Focus on the game basics, good driving, map, mechanics, audio etc. Their USP should be focused on “gangs” and customization. Imagine different worlds, gangs and the endless options in customizing your gang in detail, buildings, side operations etc. Only if they should listen to their fans
They were too woke, that "their game would incite violence and negative attitudes". They changed the names of all the stores in Saints Row 2022 because it was offensive to all the little snowflake devs.
I geniunely don't think Deep Silver was the biggest detractor from the Reboot. Almost every other developer under them has no problem, 4A games with Metro, Dambuster with Dead Island 2 and the smaller ones all seem to be perfectly fine working with them. Some part of me feels like the higher ups at Volition are trying to cover their asses, so they're shifting the blame onto DS.
4A even released an engine level modkit for Metro Exodus and that was Volitions plan too, so I really don't think DS is as detrimental as we're led to believe.
The thing is that Metro Exodus had it's launch controversy that had Deep Sliver make the game an Epic Games Store Exclusive last second which resulted in a lot of people canceling their pre orders and waiting for the game to release on Steam, Dead Island 2 also had a very very turbulent development with the game switching Developers 3 times, and while yes Dead Island 2 is a fine game. The game has gotten flak for it's very meh story. And not to mention that Deep Sliver has a history of having very shit marketing for their games. Mighty No. 9 being a big prime sample of that.
This. This is also questionable, because it was already in a divisive issue to fans before the reboot. From SR3 onward and SR3 was when they got a new president, who said himself he didn't like SR3 in retrospect because he felt he couldn't show it to his kids (ignorant to its adult audience and M-rating). The internal battle over what Saints Row internally with Volition was already brewing. Steve Jaros wrote SR4 then took his name off it after people criticized its plot.
The people who criticize Deep Silver and not Volition as to why the game turned out to be shit have no clue what they're talking about. Volition already proved the direction they wanted to go when in 2014 they said Anita Sarkeesian was right about their games.

And you're out here saying on a lot of these comments going on about how "Volition deserved to go under" how they were the enemy and how everyone is completely neglecting the idea that Volition isn't getting any blame for their Downfall when literally every video that's gone into detail about Saints Row 2022's Development. Everyone has said that Deep Sliver isn't all to blame for all of the Reboot's poor choices. And again Saints Row 2022 was the only game Volition has made that almost nobody agree was a good game. To say they deserved their Downfall is quite dumb in a way.

The original idea for the reboot sounds exactly like what we all wanted. Imagine how different things could have been - we could have got a really good new SR game and a massively improved version of the best game in the series (and one of the best games of all time) on top of it. What a shit timeline we live in.
The saints row 2 pc patch just hurts at this point to think about.

I actually bought some old volition games this year. Red faction series and the punisher. Idk who deserves the most blame for that reboot but I do know the community didn't deserve that or to be treated that way.
Exec meddling, yeah I can see and believe that goodness knows it's happened plenty before. Just amazes me that they always seem to think they know better than the people making it or the fans requests/suggestions.
If anything I wish Red Faction would get a reboot under a different publisher and studio.

But if what MSG is saying is true and looking at embracer group and perhaps a bit of DS (plus working for plenty of companies where they changed how things are done and demanded great results/profit) I can see where exec meddling could've stopped them from doing better in some aspects of the game.

But there's no denying exec meddling is a thing that has ruined games, movies, TV series, etc for a long long time and when it fails the blame falls not on them but devs.
Embracer group really gets a side eye from me because of the rumor that they were behind the firing of the community manager for limited run games when LRG dgaf about the Hogwarts thing and was planning to just ignore it.

I’m going to take my hatred for Dex to the grave, Shit was personal. the fact we were robbed like four separate times of getting sweet revenge, It’s like salt to the wound.
Mike was a legend, a real man of the fans. I just feel awful knowing the terrible conditions they had to work, and that even under said conditions he cared so much about us fans that he worked, even until he couldn’t anymore, that was precious time he could have spent with his family, doing what needed to be done in the short time he had, he CHOSE to spend that time for us. Let’s never forget that, we were so important to him that he made such a hard choice all for us. The man deserves to be known for the incredible person he was, I just hope the patch comes out eventually, for no other reason than to see Mike’s will carried out, one final thank you from everyone involved to the man who has contributed to much over the years.

I'm kinda hoping some aspiring indie dev buys the franchise and gives Saints Row a REAL *gritty* reboot that actually goes full crime sim, rather than wacky cartoon bs we got the last decade
Nightdive Studios would do it true justice I think, they've been doing a fantastic job bringing old games back into the front again, though they really only work on FPS titles so I doubt that they would, still if anyone was going to bring back a good SR1-2 it would be a company like they, they seem to care how their product comes out.
Hopefully GTA 6 pushes Deep Silver to make a Saints Row 7 and actually listen to fans this time. I wanna see realistic graphics too, the reboot cartoony look was pathetic for current/next gen

The reality is the og saints row actors aren't coming back.
The reboot was an absolute joke. You look at their comments on the posts and its little to no praise. Its not even a saints row. Its a completely different game.

... well, fair enough, it worked with SR3. That game had enough goodwill from SR2 to carry it's sales and the marketing was on point in obfuscating all the faults.
I did blame Volition at first before finding out it's really the publisher I don't know if it's still possible but would have been cool to see Volition under Microsoft since the game initially was exclusive there. I feel MS wouldn't have got in the way of creating the art the devs wanted to make. They probably would have also helped give it the tools to boost the things like multiplayer to try get it to the level of GTA V.

I think they went jokey with SRT3 and since social media just came out it went viral so they thought that was the path and took that route. I think when they were doing live streams of older games like SR1 & 2 they showed a lot of love to them but I think the publisher wanted to erase the first 2 games like the Saints Row Twitter account was ran by them so they controlled what we thought Volition was saying. I don’t believe the sales numbers comment. If it sold well they would have stated the numbers. It was also mentioned during 2 financial meetings that it would “eventually” make its money back. Come the last Embracer meeting it was said that the game did not meet expectations and would change the way new games are green-lit.

Deep Silver is interested in exploiting the brand recognition of the SR IP but not actually making a proper SR game. The pushback against Deep Silver’s overall distasteful attitude towards the Saints Row Fanbase & it’s legacy has given Deep Silver more than enough Spiteful Incentive to Permanently Fridge This Franchise & move on pretending that this franchise didn’t happen along with the fact Embracer Group was literally looking for any excuse to shutter the studio at this point..
Because you can't blame Deep Silver and Embracer Group for the dogshit combat and gameplay mechanics of the New Saints Row, nor can you blame them for Volition praising Anita Sarkeesian back in 2014.
To this very day, I still play the shit out of SR2 like it just came out. The open world genre is so overly saturated in this era, yet at the same time, I've not found a GTA-style game to top SR2's focus on freedom, player choice, and environmental interaction. GTA IV and SR2 were the peak for me.

It makes a lot of sense where all the hate for the old games came from, and I knew their community manager was a DS employee as well. All I see from it is that Volition was blamed for their behavior. Deep Silver not only sabotaged the game itself, but sabotaged any good will for the game with audiences that had criticism of it, and they really banked on just journalists to like the reboot. They even withheld Volition's bonus pay to the metacritic score, after they poisoned the well for people to hate it, in addition to rushing, and underemploying Volition to make their broken game. It was just a corporate mess.
this is just the narrative pushed by Volition fans who can't accept that the company went to shit. They need a scapegoat. Volition already proved that they were shit when in 2014 they said Anita Sarkeesian was right about their games.

Embracer admitted in a later call the reboot lost money and failed to meet expectations. There is no more Deep Silver either. After allowing their incompetence to go unchecked since acquiring them, they've finally restructured them and merged them with two other publishers to form a singular new publisher called Plaion. Saints Row Reboot went against the values Saudi Arabia holds, so given the timing, it likely played a significant role in Saudi Arabia pulling out of the deal.

4:14 I know that fixing a game is not a very easy job to do, considering other problems, such as money, resources and also IP laws in order to launch an official patch. But if some Saints Row fans were also working on the Saints Row 2 PC patch, and they have enough experience to do such thing. Why not making all they could to develop that patch as a mod instead, just like the Gentleman pf the Row Mod? Or at least just a small patch that helps enough to stop the game crash every 20 to 30 minutes.

Yeah dunno why saintsgodzilla tries to insist it did about as well as sr3 when theres an article from when the game was out for a month saying the game sold about a million copies within a month. Maybe its not 100% verifiable but its one of the few hard numbers we have that isn't vague statements that could either be lies or have a grain of truth.

it really seems like Deep Silver is reverse midas. Everything they touch turns to shit. Volition definitely had a killer reboot in the works but got pressured by Deep Silver to fuck it up. Even recently Deep Silver pushed Payday 3 to have a rushed launch, which is fucking the devs of that game too.
