A debut novel that I loved was A List of Cages by Robin Roe. It’s about Adam and Julian who were foster brothers and it takes place five years later and they haven’t seen each other since. So they reunite in school. It has an abuse trigger warning. I love reading books with risky topics or hard hitting and emotional. It would’ve made me cry if I had the ability to cry at sad things. I just recently found your channel and love your videos. I recommended By Your Side by Kasie West in another video but it’s gone because of a long story. But I recommend both. I read them both in two days each.

if you loved the kiss quotient, you'll enjoy The Girl He Used to Know by Tracey Garvis Graves (same author as On the Island). I loved it way more than the kiss quotient. I loved Miracle Creek! I need to read something by Riley Sager.

I thought The Hating Game was very meh and could tell it was a debut before I even found out that it was. However, I agree with The Hate U Give, The Astonishing Color of After and The Silent Patient! So well written.

I loved The Hate U Give! Such an amazing novel, and you're right - one that needed to be written. I am currently reading her second but haven't made my mind up on it yet. 'Between Shades of Gray' by Ruta Sepetys is a great debut in my opinion - I love all her books, so she's been consistently fantastic for me. 'Homegoing' by Yaa Ghasi is also amazing - I haven't seen any talk of a second coming from her, but she needs to get another one out there! Great video idea btw, might have to steal this from you (with credit, obvs.)... Thanks, Lindsi xx

Great video! One point I would add is that a debut novel is almost certainly NOT an author's first attempt at writing. "Debut" means first novel published; we have no idea how many are under their beds.

White Oleander by Janet Fitch. Have you read this book? It was made into a movie ( which I felt was awesome) staring Michele Pfeiffer (as Ingrid the mom) and Alison Lohman (as Astrid the daughter) many years ago. I think this book may have been Janet’s first work. ( but I didn’t research. Sorry). Loved this book- I couldn’t put it down! Read many years ago.

I love your videos! In case you are curious, Final Girls isn't Riley Sager's debut novel, he has published other novels under the names of Alan Finn and Todd Ritter.

The Hate U Give was really good book. I had to put it down and take a look around me because it really had me thinking. It usually takes me a day or two to finish a (300 or so page) book but that one got me emotional and had to put it down so it took me like a week. my friends noticed that too lol.
edit: i also loved the hating game and the perks of being a wallflower.

    - some debut favorites -
    Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie.
The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks
A Calculated Life by Anne Charnock
The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore by Benjamin Hale (unfortunately, his only novel)

Great video! I just finished Someone We Know by Shari Lapina. While I enjoyed it, I felt the ending was rushed and didn’t love up to the hype.
Currently reading The Good daughter by Karin Slaughter. Once I’m done with that one, I’m going to read either The Silent Patient or The Kind Worth Killing.
