My name is Marina and I am the author of “The Russian World” channel. I live in Ukraine. If you like my videos can you help me. I will be very grateful.
    PayPal marinaukraine240222@gmail.com
Even though I am ethnic Russian, I have a Ukrainian soul and heart. So I am Ukrainian.
My relatives from Russia visited me several times. They said that they liked the way of life of people in Ukraine, freedom of speech and thought. Until February 24, 2022, I had a family, a house, a job.
With the outbreak of the war, my Russian relatives said that I did not understand anything and that I “should be free”. I'm already “free”. No son, no normal life, no health, no job. Only the house remained. A half-empty house, where my envious Russian relatives were visiting.

Taking pictures of 100+ year old unpainted wooden houses, newer red-brick apartment buildings, and potholed roads tells viewers nothing about the choices people have, what is affordable, what is unaffordable, what is desirable, what needs to be done, and why necessary changes have not happened. The wooden buildings are fire hazards, but have not burned down despite their antiquity. If they are not painted, perhaps it is because paint is expensive and peels quickly from the surface of weather damaged wood. What is the cost of purchasing an apartment in one of the old buildings? What is the cost of purchasing a similar size apartment in one of the newer red brick apartment buildings? Why not interview people, if they are willing to talk? Then go to a city in the US such as Detroit, Michigan; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Seattle, Washington; Portland, Oregon; San Francisco, California; and Los Angeles, California, and do the same. The first thing you will notice is people living in tents under bridges and on sidewalks, most of them are drug addicts, some of whom are mentally ill, many who are not ill. Many dropped out of high school. Trash, syringes and needles are everywhere, along with human waste. Many of the addicts refuse to move into shelters because they cannot smoke, drink alcohol and inject heroin, etc., in shelters. Many do not want rehab. Rather, they will ask for apartments, medical care and food, without accepting responsibility for their lives and making changes. Tomsk in comparison will look like paradise. You are also more likely to conclude your journey without being murdered in any Russian city compared to a US city of the same size. Please make your videos meaningful, rather than trying to create inappropriate contempt and hatred.

I feel I need to add some context here in defence of the city I love. Firstly, many of these photos are taken in very early spring, when the temperature rises suddenly and the snows melt quickly. Traditionally (albeit less in recent years), the temperature in Tomsk is minus 40 degrees Centigrade for four months and so the snowfall is enormous. Hence, there's a lot of water when it melts! Secondly, because of the severe cold, gas pipes cannot be located within the ground but instead have to be heavily insulated and above ground. Indeed, many of the houses are built on stilts because if they were on ground level their heat would melt the permafrost beneath them, causing the house to sink. Thirdly, Tomsk is situated next to a forest the size of France which is on a peat bog: it absorbs a third of the earth's Carbon Dioxide! Thus, the traditional housing in the city is wooden and now very old. The local authority does little to care for these houses and most are covered by legal restrictions meaning they cannot be altered. Indeed, the authority prefers to demolish them in favour of new blocks and hefty backhanders (ask the football club about the corruption at high level). Fourthly, the roads are heavily pot-holed (cratered to be more precise) because of gelifraction in the severe weather. Fifthly, any video on Tomsk is incomplete without showing Lagerniy Sad. Finally, though not directly on the point, mention might have been made that Tomsk State University is ranked third best in the whole of the Russian Federation and the city is home to 80,000 students. I spent some of the happiest days of my life in Tomsk in 2010 and my heart and soul still fly there every day.
Having said all that, thank you The Russian world for your videos: I have just watched the one on Бородянка. It is beautifully produced and its impact immense. Дякую.

Your statement at the end is wrong, absurdly so. The reservations for our native people's are not paradise, but they are wonderful compared to those places you mentioned. People on the reservations live close to the land. Their ancestors lived like that. There is great poverty. Drugs and alcohol are real problems, especially among the young. The mainstream of American Life passes these places by. The economic situation is often bad. But they get decent medical care. Children go to school. Some leave and have success. Some stay and become leaders of their people. From those cities there are success stories too. But very few. I have been on reservations. I would gladly go back. I have some native blood in me. But I would not want to go to those cities. They seem horrible, at least some parts.
