Alberta man dies of cancer before seeing oncologist: "A life or death matter"

  • Mark Agnew describes his father, Don, as a self-made man who built his own construction company from the ground up. But he believes it was his dad’s relationships with people that were his top priority.
“He wanted to do his best and just be seen as a helpful person,” Mark Agnew said. “If there was a problem, he was the first one there to find a solution for a client or for friends or family... My dad was a people person first. He always valued relationships first, above and beyond anything else.”
Don Agnew, 69, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in February 2023. He received the results of a biopsy, but never had a follow-up with an oncologist.
The Cross Cancer Institute in Calgary eventually called the Agnew family in April 2023 to set up a follow-up appointment. Don, however, didn’t make it to the appointment, according to his son. He died on May 6.
    Carolyn Kury de Castillo reports.

I was given surgery almost right away. Believe me, you don't want to trade for a US style system. My American mom was refused heart surgery by her longtime HMO which she paid into through her employer for decades. I mean they just CHOSE TO REFUSE HER. She died about four months later. Here in Canada I have received excellent care, tests, operation and ongoing visits with specialists for over a year. The Canadian health care system saved my life. And all that would have probably cost me around 500 THOUSAND DOLLARS in the US. Who can afford that? Not even a millionaire! I think you folks better really take a hard look into what's at stake. BTW PP voted against health care expansion so why don't you complain to him.

The treatment that we have in Canada now is deplorable! Delaying tests in the Emergency room that are literally life or death. You literally have to demand them. My mother was told by a doctor after being taking to ER that they would do an ultrasound the next day. About 24 hours later. I told him she needed one now. I said there is something wrong, can't you see her eyes. Its her liver. I'm no doctor, but he finally had one done later that day. If they hadn't she would have died that evening before his test time. Her galblader was septic and she had to gave emergency surgery. Dont trust what the doctors are telling you. I wouldn't doubt they are being paid by the government to cap the amount of tests being done, to keep the costs down. Where is our money going? We need to start suing for malpractice until the government does something about it

They said we need to act fast!
It took Ontario health “care” 7 months to operate on him and he got operated on in July 2023!
Obviously by then cancer spread to his lymph nodes.

Maybe cancer or not but the waiting list is huge for these specialists. Last October I found myself in the hospital urgent care . The doctor there referred me to a cardiologist. I got an echocardiogram in April, I dont actually get to see the cardiologist until Christmas this year. I’m a bit of a wreck health wise but not getting to a doctor who can help is a death sentence these days in Canada
