Alberta man dies of cancer before seeing oncologist: "A life or death matter"

- Mark Agnew describes his father, Don, as a self-made man who built his own construction company from the ground up. But he believes it was his dad’s relationships with people that were his top priority.
“He wanted to do his best and just be seen as a helpful person,” Mark Agnew said. “If there was a problem, he was the first one there to find a solution for a client or for friends or family... My dad was a people person first. He always valued relationships first, above and beyond anything else.”
Don Agnew, 69, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in February 2023. He received the results of a biopsy, but never had a follow-up with an oncologist.
The Cross Cancer Institute in Calgary eventually called the Agnew family in April 2023 to set up a follow-up appointment. Don, however, didn’t make it to the appointment, according to his son. He died on May 6.
Carolyn Kury de Castillo reports.

you have to be on a waiting list which will take a 1year or more for surgery. you cant find a family Doctor... it takes 3-6 hours to see a Dr in the hospital
I was given surgery almost right away. Believe me, you don't want to trade for a US style system. My American mom was refused heart surgery by her longtime HMO which she paid into through her employer for decades. I mean they just CHOSE TO REFUSE HER. She died about four months later. Here in Canada I have received excellent care, tests, operation and ongoing visits with specialists for over a year. The Canadian health care system saved my life. And all that would have probably cost me around 500 THOUSAND DOLLARS in the US. Who can afford that? Not even a millionaire! I think you folks better really take a hard look into what's at stake. BTW PP voted against health care expansion so why don't you complain to him.
All those cancer contributions do nothing...
It’s a big scam and let’s remember there’s no profit in cure.
In BC we have real health care.. all treatment and scans can be done in Vancouver or now Kelowna..
Some proceeds probably go to terrorist organizations.
Why the sudden increase in pancreatic cancer? I know of three people this year diagnosed with it.
Probably the high content sugar foods with so many added chemicals. Harsh on that organ.
@@OblivionMaster555 That has been the case for decades though.
its because of the c19
Becuse you touch yourself at night
The chemicals are called mRNA @@OblivionMaster555
The treatment that we have in Canada now is deplorable! Delaying tests in the Emergency room that are literally life or death. You literally have to demand them. My mother was told by a doctor after being taking to ER that they would do an ultrasound the next day. About 24 hours later. I told him she needed one now. I said there is something wrong, can't you see her eyes. Its her liver. I'm no doctor, but he finally had one done later that day. If they hadn't she would have died that evening before his test time. Her galblader was septic and she had to gave emergency surgery. Dont trust what the doctors are telling you. I wouldn't doubt they are being paid by the government to cap the amount of tests being done, to keep the costs down. Where is our money going? We need to start suing for malpractice until the government does something about it
The USA is far worse yet this is what Smith and the Conservatives want.
A friend of mine was diagnosed with stage 3 skin cancer that’s severely aggressive in December 2022
They said we need to act fast!
It took Ontario health “care” 7 months to operate on him and he got operated on in July 2023!
Obviously by then cancer spread to his lymph nodes.
That's so awful
I feel you. My grandma has a tumour yet all they’ve done was tests for the last 6 months. I’ve just made peace with the fact she will probably die.
@@Moonshine449 I’m very sorry you’re all having to go through this…
Keep voting for Trudeau and your health care card will be a small book with passport on the front and credit card inside.....Trudeau is expanding access to MAID for the rest.
This one is all on the Province of Alberta Health and their lackeys who got cushy high paying policy positions in Alberta Health . Blame Klein and the cabal of the one party every after. Notley tried but needed a 2nd term. Smith is a useless simpleton who should have stayed a radio jockey complaining that everything is a booggeyman outside force fault. She has no capability, doens't know responsibility and has no solutions. I don't care if you don't like Trudeau. This isn't on him. 100% Alberta self-made problem
Same thing happened to me, found lump in Augusts - tests were not sent to doctor till Sept - did not see an oncologist till months later, started chemo in NOV. 3 months after initial finding. By than I was stage 3 - Nanaimo
You must have had Moderna
Time for families to start sueing... Need to get our health system and government to wake up.
Absolutely unacceptable!
With respect: That's not true, or we wouldn't have voted in this government three times.
Turdeau's canada. Mark Holland is addressing health care issues with vague dental cleaning coverage.
Health care delivery is done by the provinces.
@elena2125 The federal also covers some. It's also tough when federal policies are driving investment out of Canada and we now pay more on the debt intrest then Healthcare.
@@EyeSee4.8 Payment tranfers are made from the Fed's to the provinces and the provinces deliver or are supposed to deliver health care to Canadians. We need to increase and attract invesmet and deal with the debt but we should not ignore health care for Canadians
@@elena2125 I agree.
Provincial! it's Smith's cuts.
Diagnosed with lung cancer in 2018 still don’t have an oncologist. I have a lying surgeon
That’s nothing, in BC my wife complained to the Nurse Practitioner she had lost 10lbs in one week, she was told it was in her imagination. 3 months later she was still loosing weight, went to emergency in Kamloops Hospital, she was diagnosed with Brain and lung cancer, she died 6 months later.
I'm so sorry for your loss. RIH has such a bad rep (and for good reason too 😞) - no MDs want to work there, so there's something innately toxic about it.
My father survived his brain infection there, but just barely - we had to threaten to switch hospitals in order to see any action 😤
Our healthcare system is atrocious, and was heading this way long before 2019
Turdeau's Canada. If he had wanted an assessment for MAID or was seeking gender reassignment, he would have been seen in a week.
And they bragged about how much money MAiD saved .
Wow the misinformation is thick with you guys. Health care is governed PROVINCIALLY. And all premiers in Canada EXCEPT ONE are Conservatives. Also, you whine with your flacid 'Trudeau's Canada' comment, but fail to mention that PP VOTED AGAINST HEALTH CARE EXPANSION that Trudeau put forth.
A Canadian cancer patient needs to be prepared with credit cards, a bank account and passport for a US health care destination.
It's better to go to Mexico, Cuba or China. China is really advancing on all medical fronts because it isn't corporate profit driven.
@@carsi7282 But they might demand an organ donation for one of their comrades that needs a kidney or other parts.
And cons wants that here. Where you can't get the help you need unless you have a disposable $250,000.
Sadly, pancreatic cancer is a death sentence. By the time it's detected, it's stage 3 or 4. rip.
yeah, that is the point. I saw too many people die from cancer in Canada in the past 30 years because of the failing health care system, because people don't get timely screening and timely treatment.
@FreedaPeeple-in2mnsame goes for ovarian
Don’t worry old stock Canadians back to the line. Newcomers first served.
At least they're getting their pensions and their property value is going up.
OMG I so agree! !!
And overpopulation is helping a lot
Doctors can't afford Alberta insane house prices
Medical is run provincially
Can't believe that would happen in Trudeau's Canada
it's actually the first symptoms of the UCP government defunding the system into oblivion to justify privatization. it's a provincial jurisdiction.
@@ghettorestoration This happens in EVERY jurisdiction in Canada. Who do you "think" you are kidding?
Damn, you conservatives really love showing off your ignorance.
When my father was diagnosed with cancer many years ago, it was the conservatives that were in power then. He was given a three month waiting period. I called and complained, so he got in 1 month sooner. Who are you going to blame next time???
@@katgill7310 how do you think bringing in millions of people doesn't affect our social safety net as in healthcare it was bad before but now it's intolerable and f*** Trudeau
Better regulation of the ingredients in food would be a good way to battle cancer rates.
how about take responsibility for what you eat.
@@linebrunelle1004 Could do both. All that packaged crap in the grocery stores full of sugar and seed oils should never be eaten by anyone.
Or even what we spray in our environment... the fact that glyphosate is still on Health Canada's allowed list (while Monsanto-Bayer is facing numerous lawsuits in the US currently) proves HC has an agenda, and our health and safety isn't it.
All those Breaking Bad memes about it not happening in Canada have aged badly
Yeah, the US rations by price, we just ration by waiting list.
The situation with Ontario health care is pretty grim. I hope Doug Ford is all done with what ever he is doing with alcohol and can straighten this mess out. Maybe then he can actually get on his horse and say he did something.
So sorry it had to happen this way,
We have the highest immigration rate per capita than any country in the world. Massive media attention in the USA about this issue but not a word from the Trudeau bought and paid for Canadian media. Could this be contributing to the problem? Dumping 255,000 people into Alberta in one year will probably cause some issues.
This is a ucp issue. Going back to Klein's cutbacks in the 90s. Brain drain.
It’s not just alberta, same situation here in Ontario and likely rest of Canada. I’ve been 4 years without family doctor, just got one last week which is good since I’m having issues with bowel movements, blood etc….Now I might be able to at least get a referral to a specialist. Maybe cancer or not but the waiting list is huge for these specialists. Last October I found myself in the hospital urgent care . The doctor there referred me to a cardiologist. I got an echocardiogram in April, I dont actually get to see the cardiologist until Christmas this year. I’m a bit of a wreck health wise but not getting to a doctor who can help is a death sentence these days in Canada
Keep sending money to Ukraine, Gaza, Europe.... keep voting
Its ok, carbox tax has got this
Might not have happened if he had the right to seek, and pay for, his own care rather than being forced to stay within the governfment health care system!
Maybe if Canadian physicians prescribed psychiatric drugs less often after spending more time taking medical histories without them demanding proof that what their patients are saying all happened to them in the past then there would be more public funds available for Cancer treatment cases.
Canada health care system worser than under developed country . Don’t expect anyone instant treatment . Shortage of funding, staff, infrastructure are the main reason.
Thank Trudeau
Radiologists are also in demand
Stop worrying, you now are richer than you think. Pancreatic cancer is the worst.
Did he even consider seeking care elsewhere?
Sunny ways 😢
:( condolences to the family . This is unacceptable the wait time and state of our health care .
3 months between biopsy and Oncologist? Ridiculous!
Only regular subjects wait
If you can pay your looked after immediately
So sad
where is your tax money going?
We have been waiting in Alberta for over a year for my spouse who has serious severe liver fibriods, possible cirrhosis and the liver is very bad on blood tests family physician was really worried and referred us last year. Medical and hiring doctors is up to provincial government.
Simple solution = Tax us to death, oh ya we already are!
Canada ranks #2 as best country in the world to live. Also #3 as the country with the highest quality of life. That's from US News and World Report. If you want the right to pay lots of tax but get no healthcare then can't you easily move to the US?
Do we know if he had been vaccinated?
Oh stop it.
@@Bearwithme560why? Because it's a legitimate Q, knowing what we know now?
Just because some people don't want to acknowledge reality 🤷♀️ truth doesn't care about your bias
province didn't step up. they want more people to go there. they better step up!
I grew up believing I lived in the best country. I don't know why this is happening. Where is our tax money going to?
When you get cancer, you feel so alone and scared. I can't imagine waiting and waiting for a reply.
I do not recall the exact name of the annual study or who commissioned it, but I do remember that in 2015 Canada ranked No. 5 in Quality of Life. We are no No. 33.
I cannot imagine what has caused this decline.
is there a point to this story? why it was chosen to be told over countless other cancer stories? why it was even told at all?
Histotripsy is now available.
Why care about people when you can care only about money? The Conservatives know exactly which one that most "taxpayers" really care about.
Good job liberal and ndp voters. Health care system in Canada is so broken. In bc people are waiting a year.
Cancer treatments and numbers of doctors are up to the provinces and the premiers
Cost effective animal turnover.
