Steam locomotives were in decline from late 70,s itself in India. Major cities had shunned steam by then. Only small towns and branch lines operated them. WP class locomotives - interesting how these were built by a variety of manufacturers from North America and Europe. Thirty of them were built at Fablok Chrzanów, Poland. WP 3024 was the 5000th locomotive assembled since the factory's inception. Sadly, Fablok as a locomotive builder is all gone now.
Can you please tell me how many coaches could a broad gauge steam locomotive pull? I have travelled many times during my younger days but don't recollect paying attention to such details.
In the last days of steam the locos hauled 5 to 10 coaches. In older times when the engines were in better shape they moved up to 20 coaches over lines with no sever gradients. Similar to modern times, albeit much slower.
Broad gauge locomotives can pull upto 1200 tonnes of weight .In old days broad gauge coaches weigh 48 tonnes each. Whereas, metre gauge locomotives can pull 700 tonnes of weight , MG coaches are maximum 36 tonnes in weight. I hope you get answer
By 1980 or so most of the steam train locomotives were stopped in India but few services remained. Officially speaking all scheduled steam locomotive trains of broad gauge ended in 1995 and metre gauge in 2000 in India Now only the heritage and few tourist steam locomotive trains remain in India.
